Resetting the PMU with a non-Apple keyboard
Trying to help a buddy of mine do a PMU on his 20" G5 ALS, are their alternative IBM format keystrokes to the command-option-P-R sequence?

What you are trying to do is reset the PRAM. Resetting the PMU doesn't need the keyboard at all: SMU.

OKAY, I had to get a new keyboard, I can't stand the little apple keyboards!!! they are so laborious for your fingers! i got a great logitech wireless keyboard and the only thing im missing is the disk drive open button on the apple keyboard. of course, you can open the drive through itunes, but is there not a way to open the drive up without opening itunes?? does anyone else feel the same way about apple keyboards?? Your CD/DVD drive is called a disc drive. Your hard drive is called a disk drive.
You can open the disc drive on Restart/Startup while holding down the mouse button.
Another method.
Enabling an *Eject Menu* - you can enable another means of ejecting discs by opening the folder System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras and double-clicking the file "Eject.menu". An eject icon will appear in the menubar that can be used to close and open selected optical drives.

PRAM reset with non-Apple keyboard??

I have a generic USB keyboard connected to my G4 Mac Mini, no windows key, no apple option key. I need to reset the PRAM - is there any way I can do this with a non-Apple keyboard?

It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive. -
Non-apple keyboard and aperture recovery does not work
Hello all, I use a mac mini with a non-apple keyboard and I am trying to recover my Aperture database, however, although the alt and command key work in all applications, the combination does not start up Aperture in recovery mode. Anyone any ideas? Thanks.

Your migration to Lion brought over a previous hot key preferences document. And this contains one bad key that wasn't updated.
- Quit System Preferences (if open)
- Delete this document to remove a carry-over mapping error.
- Then logout
Note: That this will delete any existing modified keyboard assignments. Re-assign changes manually.
Note2: This document is in your users preferences folder.

How do you open the CD tray with OS 10.4 and a non-Apple keyboard?
F12 used to work but this was changed in 10.4 to trigger the stupid Dashboard.F12 does not work for me, but I accept that if other people can make it work, then I need to figure out why it doesn't work for me. Glad to know there is a solution on the horizon.
Regarding adding the CD eject control to the Finder menu; that's a great idea. I should have remembered that was possible. For reference, the location of that menu add-on and others is:

You can use the keyboard you want with your iMac. However, note that some keys, as the Command key, aren't present in non-Apple keyboards. For example, in a non-Apple keyboard, you have to press the Windows key because that's the replacement of the Command key of an Apple keyboard -
How do I switch iMac between external display with non-Apple keyboard?
When using the Apple Wireless keyboard that came with my iMac, I can press Cmd+F2 to switch between the iMac display and a PC connected to the DisplayPort input of the iMac.
However, I prefer to use a USB (non-Apple) keyboard as I can connect that to a USB switch and share the same keyboard between my iMac and my PC. However, pressing Cmd+F2 on the non-Apple keyboard does not seem to work.
I suspect this is because it's not actually "Cmd+F2" but rather "Cmd+Brightness Up" and my external keyboard does not have a "Brightness Up" key.
Is there any way to mimic "Cmd+Brightness Up" on a non-Apple keyboard? Of is there some other way to force the iMac to switch between inputs?
It's annoying to have to keep the Apple keyboard around for the sole purpose of switching between inputs.If they're on the same wireless network, there is no inherent difference between this and a wired network.
If the sharing isn't working then there's something else amiss. Can you describe the network setup in more detail so that someone might be able to spot the issue. -
I have an iphone 4 which is currently synced with a non apple laptop and I wish to sync it with my new imac. I have just backed the phone up on my laptop but am not sure what I need to do now. I do not want to loose any contacts, emails or photos from my phone when I change sync computers. Can anyone assist with a step by step guide as to how to achieve this oucome? Thanks in advance.

I am trying to log onto a Mac Mini I haven't used in awhile and I forgot the password. I am trying to reset the password with my apple ID but the computer keeps saying the Apple ID and the password are incorrect whenever I know they are, as I am using the exact same ID right now.
I have switched my password in the past, so my theory is my mac mini thinks that my password has not changed and it will not update because The Wi-Fi password has also changed so it cannot connect to any servers...Does that sound like I am on the right track?
Is there a way to update my Wi-Fi password (saved into the computer) without logging on?If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. -
Ipod touch not being recognized by itunes (but is registering as an external drive by the computer itself) have updated and reinstalled itunes, stopped/started apple mobile device and removed any mobile programs associated with my non apple cellphone. This seems to have started happening after the last Itunes update I did as I was able to put music on my ipod touch a month or so ago. Is there some way to go back to an older version of itunes? I really have no idea what else to do since I followed every step on the trouble shooting page for windows 8.

Then connect to iTunes and sync! -
Hi I'm using a Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired). Randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and stuck (which it isn't) which then stops when the keyboard is unplugged. I've tried rebooting, plugging it into another port and unplugging my mouse from it and it hasn't solved the issue. I also can't pin point when it does it, it seems to be random so sometimes, like now it's fine and then others it does it every few minutes. I'm reluctant to throw the keyboard out if there is a chance it can be fixed. Any ideas?
You cannot use any additional devices on the keyboard's USB ports when used in this fashion (except perhaps ONE low power Apple mouse). Anything more draws too much power and may make the keyboard malfunction. In general, keyboards do not tend to complain about low power, they just stop working properly.

Hello. My iphone 4, iOS 6.1.3 gone wild....everything is going in slow motion, every app i open is running in frames...i tried reseting the handset, with back-up, without backup(as a new iPhone) and the result is the same. My battery percentage is going down down down only by looking at my phone, imess is making me crazy, after i write the name for the recipient the keyboard appears after 2 min...and the list is looooong...everything is gone wild ! Why? What can i do ?
I'm having similar issues just lately. The phone itself is very slow to respond to the touch, just scrolling between home screens is a chore at times. There have been about 2 incidents of random vibration from it. Closing home screen folders takes a couple of attempts. I find that I'm also having delayed keyboard responses when typing messages to my contacts.
Also, sometimes when I press the sleep/wake button it takes about 30 seconds to register it and actually lock or wake up.
Have you experienced the backlight failing to light up? Like if I get a message it flashes up then goes black straight after and when you press the sleep/wake or home button it lights up again but very very dimly and you have to press the sleep/wake button as if locking it and then press it again to bring the screen up properly?
Mine is also on 6.1.3(10B329), model MD245B/A, obviously not Jailbroken, carrier unlocked from Vodafone (but that was months and months ago). Roughly 17gb of storage space left.
This has only started happening in the last 2 weeks. Haven't tried the reset or anything yet though. -

Is there any way to control system audio volume via the keyboard ?Well. I can do this. But just because, on my Apple keyboard, there are the keys that do the job. There's a key to mute, and the keys to adjust low and high the sound. But keyboard shortcuts, I don't think exist. The aren't in keyboard shortcut in Keyboard panel, within System Preferences. The bottom line is that isn't a menu item in Finder for lower sound and higher sound. The only option would be an AppleScript that you save as an applet within Scripts menu (activated in Finder via Script Editor) and you invoke with a shortcut... Well, you can do it, if you open the script Set Output Volume in UI Elements Script folder within Scripts folder. Try it out!

Have no mouse and a non-apple keyboard
i recently got this computer as a hand me down so I could get accustomed to Mac OS. unfortunately it did not come with a keyboard or a mouse and all i have available right now is a non-apple keyboard. I'm having difficulty trying to navigate my way through anything. Can anyone help?

Eww is correct.
For many things there are keyboard workarounds. For example, if you are looking at the desktop, press the up-arrow key - that should highlight the upper-leftmost icon on the desktop; you can then use the arrow keys to navigate from icon to icon on the desktop. Note though that you can only travel that way in a straight line, laterally or vertically.
You can also press the initial letter of the filename of the item - even the first two if you're fast enough - and the alphabetical-earliest item whose filename starts with that lerr(s) will be selected. You can then press Command-O as before.
You can also press 1 to select an item that starts with 1, or the earliest item alphanumerically, and then use the Tab key to move from one item to the next in alphanumerical order.
These methods will also work in a folder set to List view as well as one set to Icon view.
Once the icon of an item you want to activate (open if it is a folder, start if it is a program, open with its creator program if it is a document) is selected, pressing Command-O (that's the letter "O", lower case) will initiate that action.
However - although the Enter key can be used in most windows to activate the default button, there is no keyboard solution to using pulldown menus, or to select items in a radio-button array (like in control panels), or (in most windows) to click a button other than the default one. For those a mouse is needed.
Just as important is using a keyboard which is compatible with Apple command keys. Although there are many non-Apple keyboards which are Mac-compatible, many, if not most, PC keyboards are not - it is iffy whether the Window, Alt, or whatever-they-use keys on such will behave like the keys on Mac-compatible keyboards.
If you have a working mouse, then you can sidestep the absence of keyboard command compatibility on such keyboards - except at startup. No matter how well we maintain our Macs, at some point or another we will need to use one or more startup commands - to zap the PRAM or rebuild the desktop; or to select an alternate boot volume; or to access Extensions Manager before the OS loads; or for some other crisis-based reason. For that reason it is wise to have a Mac-compatible keyboard available. -
Two days ago, the electricity went out, and my Mac G4 desktop, OSX 10.4.11 was on Sleep and it too Shut down completely. Tried to start the computer, but nothing. Looked up problem in another computer and followed directions on what to do. I disconnected everything, pressed the PMU reset button, hooked up the keyboard & mouse and the computer started up, no problem. Today, the same thing happened, went through the same steps as above. (Here in south Florida we have frequent electricity outages). I thought the battery was the problem, but after starting up the computer, all my settings - date, time, etc., are OK. That indicates that the battery is OK, no? Any idea of why I have to reset the PMU restart button to turn my computer on again? Should I change the 3.6 volt battery? Thanks
If the battery is more than a couple of years old it may be ready for a change. Low batteries can cause strange startup problems in Macs that are not predictable, consistent, or logical in manifesting their woes.
If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.
