Reshaping Rollover Area

I have a pie chart that I would like to provide additional information to using rollovers. I thought I would be able to do this by using a polygon smart shape for each part of my pie chart and then use Convert to rollover Smart Shape. However, that appears to convert the smart shape into a text box and keeps the rollover rectangular. That seems rather backwards. Anyone have a clue as to how to shape the rollover area instead of the text area? Thanks.

Indeed, it is the smart shape that is turned into a rollover shape as the tooltip mentioned, but the rollover area is always a rectangle.
Do you need it to be a rollover, is a click not an alternative? If you can cope with clicks: create a shape with the wanted form and turn it into a button.
If you really need rollovers, then you should buy the Eventhandler widget of InfoSemantics, it allows you to create rollover events.
Another workaround is to use a rollover slidelet. For slidelets it is possible to 'Redraw' the rollover area.

Rollover Area appeared on all slides

While editing a project in Captivate 5.5 I realized that at some point I've done something to make a Rollover area appear on all slides. During editing I saved the file with a new name in case I needed to go back to the original. When I check the older file the rollover area isn't there. I've checked the master slide and there isn't a rollover on it. I can't seem to click on it to remove it. I would appreciate any help to make this go away. Thanks.

Multiple rollover areas on a slide, only one works

Long time reader, first time poster. I have been looking through all the forums and can't find a solution for this issue.
I have a slide with six rollover captions, arranged in two rows of three. Beneath each rollover caption is a regular caption containing a statement; the viewer is intended to mouse over the statement, and the rollover will pop up a caption saying whether the statement is true or false. After ten seconds a button appears and pauses the slide, and the viewer can click the button to go to the next slide.
When I preview the project, only the top left of the boxes works right away as intended. Then after ten seconds, the button appears, and the other five start working just fine. One weird thing is that during that first ten seconds, the mouse cursor still changes to a hand icon on all of the rollovers, so it recognizes that they are there, but nothing pops up.
The issue seems to have to do with the button, but I have tried adjusting its timing, its order in the layer stacks, I have tried deleting the button, I have tried copying all the elements except the button to a new slide, and I'm still getting the same problem, and the buttons start working properly at the ten-second mark regardless of where the button is. All the rollover captions and rollover areas have identical properties as far as I can tell. The rollover areas are at the top of the layer stack, and are not overlapping. The top left (on the stage) is always the only one that works properly, no matter how I arrange them in the layer stack.
I have tried everything I can think of. Now I humbly turn to you. Shot of my timeline below. Thanks in advance!

Are there any objects on earlier slides that are set to Rest of Project that might be overlapping your hit areas on this slide?
For example, something that caused a similar issue once was having a widget on an earlier slide. The widget in question (Adobe Course Companion) was set to Rest of Project and ended up obscuring the hit area of interactive objects on later slides. Not sure if this helps, but if you were able to paste these Smart Shapes into a different single slide project and they still didn't work there, then my idea probably wouldn't be an issue either. This might be one of those issues that only happens on a MAC.

Can I add an image to a rollover area? For example a "hover
mouse here" prompt?
Also, my rollover area and rollover image keep getting locked
together so if I move one the other moves. Does anyone know why, or
how to fix it?

Hi Peter
While you can't use an image as part of the Rollover, there
should be nothing preventing you from simply inserting an
additional image to use for that.
As for both areas being selected and moving when you only
want one, I would ask if the image is large enough where it covers
part of the rollover area? If so, that could explain it. The areas
should be able to be acted upon independently. But sometimes you
have to first reduce the size of the rollover image to make room
for the rollover area if you wish to focus on that. Once finished,
you should be able to reset the size of the image and reposition as
needed.

Adding Audio to rollover areas

I need to add an image to a question that when a student rests their mouse over will play a short mp3 file. I do not want the file to play automatically - I have added a roll over image and a roll over caption - both work sporadically - sometimes they play as soon as the question launches - sometimes I have to hover my mouse. When I go back into edit the slides - the rollover does not show an audio file on the ones that wait for the hovering mouse - but always does on those that do, I have no idea what I have done differently.... What is the proper path to follow to complete this type of interaction???? Any any idea what may have caused my plight?

It's not exactly clear to me how exactly you assigned the audio.
In case it will help, I'll outline the process I might follow (which I've never seen fail) in the hopes it will help you.
Click Insert > Rollover (Image or Caption, it should make no difference).
When you do this, you see TWO objects on the slide. One is the area your user mouses over. The other is what appears when the user mouses over the other area.
Note that each of the two areas will allow you to attach Audio. And here is where many folks grow confused.
If you attach audio to the rollover area, you hear it when the rollover area appears. Often, this means when the slide loads up. But if you attach the audio to the object that appears when the rollover area is moused over by the user, the audio should only be heard when you mouse over.
All too often users get the two confused. They assign the audio to the rollover area and it needs to be the other way around.

Rollover Area on quiz not working correctly?

I have added a rollover area to my quiz, which shows up once the user rolls their cursor over the image on the right hand side.
It is coming up as you can see, but the quiz question and answers show through.
Is there a setting to fix this or do rollovers and slidelets just not work properly in quiz's?

Which version of Captivate do you use? I had answered a question about rollover images on question slides in the other forum, with a screenshot of rollover images that didn't have transparent pixels, and they covered up the question slide objects. I had only to be sure that the rollover area could be reached by the user, was not overlapping (too much) with a regular question object. Will try to insert a screenshot, but have issues with this forum, not possible to insert images any more for me, will try in another browser and eventually edit this comment. Rollover buttons and rollover areas

I created a button on Fireworks that changes from blue to purple on rollover and when I imported it into Captivate 5 it works perfectly. However when I added a rollover area the button no longer changes color. I would love some ideas on how to make that work.
I tried placing the rollover area behind the button and it changes color but the rollover caption does not show up. I also tried not using a rollover area and instead changing the button properties to On Success: Show > Text Caption and that works ok except I don't want the slides to continue for there are still other buttons I would like the viewer to press before proceeding. I have a feeling there's some Advanced Actions that I could use but don't know how to set them up.
Please help me, thanks a bundle in advance.

This isn't possible to do any other way. I tried every other way I could think of first.

Rollover Area top of timeline, but underneath text

Good Day (and Good Friday),
My Rollover Area is at the very top of the timeline, but there are Text Captions that are displaying over it (can see this in Captivate, and when running project). Attached is an image of this. I'm guessing I'm missing something simple, but I want the Rollover to display on top of everything else. Any ideas?

That was it! Thanks for your help. I now realize that not just the "rollover area" can be Z-ordered (bring to front/back), but also the rollover text (highlighted in red in my image) can also be Z-ordered. But it looks like the rollover text does not show in the Timeline, which was the confusing part. Got it now.

Rollover areas slow to show in html/pdf format

Hi
I have a series of rollover shapes with text appearing when the user hovers over the shapes. However when viewing the learning in pdf/html it takes a good 10 seconds or longer for the rollover function to appear, if at all. It's only happening with this one slide which only consists of shapes and rollovers. Any ideas?

Perhaps something on your slide has become corrupted.
Take a backup copy of your project, then try this:
Create a new blank project CPTX of the same dimensions as your current project and copy/paste all slides into the new shell project. Then test to see if the issue remains in the new project.
If it does remain, try dragging groups of objects off stage into the scrap area so that they will not be published with the output and test publish again to see if removing certain objects seems to resolve the issue.
If there are any Advanced Actions on this slide, delete them and see if that makes a difference.
Let us know how this works out.

Rollover problem - rollover area and rollover caption appear simultaneously. Mouse has no effect.

Greetings - I am a new user of Captivate 7, subscription version. I am taking tutorials and cannot get the rollover caption and area to work. They simply appear as two objects. Mousing does not affect appears or disappearance of the caption. What am I doing wrong? TIA

This may seem like a stupid question, but how are you watching the project? Simply playing the slide (using F3 or pressing the play button in the timeline) won't show interactive objects working. Use:
F4 (to preview the whole project within Captivate)
F10 (to preview a certain number of slides in Captivate starting with the current one--default is 5 slides)
F12 (to preview as a swf in the web browser)
or... I think it's F11 that previews as html5 output in a browser, although I don't use Captivate 7 so I don't know for sure

In Captivate 7, how can I track which rollover captions are viewed on a particular slide?

I have a slide with multiple rollover captions. I'm trying to figure out a way to track which captions are viewed so that when they have all been viewed, they can advance to the next slide for a quiz. I would also like to show a check mark next to the ones viewed so the user can see which ones are left. I'm not opposed to using check boxes instead of the rollover captions, but then I'd have to figure out a way to get the captions to appear when checked and then disappear. Is this possible?

Sure. The Slidelet has two parts. The rollover area (the trigger) and the slidelet area (what displays when the trigger is rolled over or clicked)
So you click to give focus to the rollover area and look at the properties panel. Specifically, the Actions area. There, you should see an ability to "Execute Advanced Actions".
So you would define an action that would increment a variable (to let you know the area was moused over) and also perform a show of an image of a check mark. (or whatever type of image you want to use to indicate it had been moused over)

Rollover Slidelet does not function when the trigger & display areas overlap

Hi everyone,
I am trying to use a rollover slidlet where the user hovers over a specific area (my target area) and then an image appears within that same area; thus I want my target area and display area to be the same. Then when the user clicks on this same area, I also would like the slide to continue onto the next slide. The technique works fine when the trigger area and and the display area DO NOT overlap, but once they do the image in the display area no longer appears and my mouse begins pulsing. Does anyone know how I can get the slidelet to behave like I want it to? Or know of any other way I can accomplish this? Advanced actions?

Indeed, you cannot have Rollover area and Rollover slidelet in the same place, very annoying.
Advanced actions cannot be triggered by a rollover event, except for Rollover slidelet, and that is the issue. If you really want a hover over effect, the only way I see is using the Eventhandler widget from InfoSemantics, it is not free:

Rollover Sidelet disappears after a few seconds even when the mouse hasn't left the "hit area."

Rollover Sidelet disappears after a few seconds even when the mouse hasn't left the "hit area." There is enough text in the sidelet that the user cant read it all before it disappears on its own. Then they have to move their mouse off the hit area and back on it to see it for another 5 seconds. How do I fix this?

You should tell which version you are using. If you are on CP7 or earlier, look in the Properties panel of the slidelet, not the slidelet area (that is the rollover area, blue rectangle): change time in Timing accordion.
If you are on CP8, for the same object (slidelet) change its time in the Timing panel that is now no longer in the Properties panel.

How to use rollover function to trigger a video demo

What I have done so far?
Imported a PowerPoint slide and I created a Rollover caption. When exploring the properties for the Rollover, under the Action field:-
On Success row, chose Open Another Project
Project row, uploaded the the file abc.cptx that is a software simulation record.
When looking at slide in published mode, encountering the following message when I clicked over the rollover area
"The project abc.htm, abc.swf is launched at this point but is unavailable from this preview window. To preview, use a web browser. "
Anyone has any idea or best practices on where I went wrong?

Hmmm, wondering if it is a typo, but a Rollover Caption doesn't have any events. How could you trigger a Success action in that case? This remark is only for other users. The only rollover object that has a rollover event is the Rollover Slidelet, not the Rollover Caption.

How can I get rid of the "x" in the upper right corner of a rollover sidelet?

I've noticed that the sidelet won't have an x if it is present from the start of the slide, but it appears if I introduce the sidelet midslide. Any tips to get rid of the x?

Actually, what you *SHOULD* see with the X is that it appears if the option "Stick Slidelet" is selected in the properties for the Rollover area.
You might perform a Google search to see if someone has developed a widget that helps you banish this little guy.
