Resize a window from any side or corner?

Why can Mac OS X only resize a Mac window from the lower-right corner?
On Windows and Linux, you can resize a window from any side or corner.
Since I use Mac at home and Windows and Linux at work, I find I really miss the ability on Mac to resize a window from any side or corner.
I can see no advantage to limiting the UI to resizing only from the lower-right corner. Does anyone else feel the same way as I?

MondoMouse lets you resize windows from any corner. You can download a 30 day free trial or buy the app for $14.95.

  • Cannot resize windows from all sides? Just the 1 corner??

    Hi all,
I've just switched back to Mac in the past year after 6 years with Windows. While in no way do I prefer windows overall, I cannot understand why Mac has not made all four sides of a given window 'grabbable' for resizing.
This is a massively inconvenient situation when you consider how often many of us need to resize/compare windows, particularly when switching to new computers, uploading files, etc.
Am I missing the solution? Is there a script available?
All I find on here are pointers to windowdragon and it requires APE which I prefer to avoid. Is there REALLY no OEM solution to this???
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment on this...

Adding that feature wouldn't pose a problem for you, though, as you wouldn't have to use it (though I bet you would in time). For people switching to mac after years on the PC, this is in fact a much-lamented issue.
Since it wouldn't hurt 'the people who don't care' to add the functionality, but the vast majority of Windows converts would be happier, it only makes sense, from a marketing standpoint, to add the feature.
People who aren't in the habit of using the feature (like yourself) quite naturally don't care much, but if you ARE in the habit of using it, it's quite annoying to have to draw the mouse all the way across the screen to find some dumb little spot (how I feel about it) when you know full well there is a more efficient way to handle the issue, and you're quite accustomed to it.
Consider this: I CAN use windows XP like a mac, in that I CAN go down to the bottom right corner to resize the window. If that were actually the superior method to resize the window, in every circumstance, I would naturally already be working with it that way. And of course I wouldn't notice there's a difference.
But it's not a superior manner of handling the 'resize' issue when your mouse is way ovver somewhere else on the screen. While this might sound like much ado about nothing, when you consider how nice it is to remove or simplify repetitive tasks, it's really a major annoyance.
But me, I'm an early adopter of the latest solutions for simplicity in the interface. I also have the new Logitech NuLOOQ ToolDial device, which has some real promise too.
Allowing users to resize the windows from any border on the window is a good idea, and not a bad idea, no matter how you look at it. It would cause no problem for anyone, yet help/satisfy many people, particularly those coming from the ONLY major opportunity Apple has to gain market share - windows users.
To be clear, this isn't a pro-windows rant, I'm just completely peeved with this one majorly annoying 'missing link' in an OS I otherwise like quite a lot. Implementing this feature wouldn't seem to be a major software engineering feat for the likes of Apple, so what's the holdup?

  • Why can I not resize Finder windows by grabbing any side or corner

I love my Macs and Leopard having used PCs for 15 years. But one annoyance of the Mac OS is the inability to resize a window by grabbing any side or corner like I can do in MS Windows.
Being able to resize a Mac OS window by having to grab the lower right corner is a very limiting especially when I have a number of windows open at one time. I would think with all of Apple's sophistication that this would be a simple convenience to add.
Are there any utilities out that that add this functionality to Leopard?
    Thanks for sharing in advance.

He said he'd been using PCs, not Macs, for 15 years. I also find it annoying that I cannot resize from any corner or side, and that the maximise button on each window seems to do something totally random.
When you change from one OS to another, do you really expect them to be the same? Then why change? It's like changing from a LH drive car to a RH drive car. It takes a few minutes and that's it.
Different OSs are different otherwise they would be the same.
You don't have a powerful Unix system lying under a Windows GUI and you don't need anti-virus software or have to defrag every day or so. And you do not need to reinstall every month or so or ever get caught in DLL-heck.
Yes Macs are different from Windows machines. I regularly use both and have no problems with either. Whether the gearshift and rearview mirror are on the right or left does not matter to me. I like either.
I'm not sure what disk fragmentation, reinstallation or DLL-**** (never heard of DLL-heck) have to do with the OPs question and observation about being able to drag any corner when you have a screen full of windows. Sounds to me like an attack in desparate defence of OS X instead of constructive discussion.
I also regularly use both, professionally, but there are things that Windows does better than OS X, and there is no reason why OS X could not improve. For example, why can I not selectively remove (i.e. completely destroy) files from my trash?

  • Invoke a Browser Window from any screen.

I've added my own menu after "System Help" on all screens by adding it in MENUSYST status MEN. I want to call Function Module CALL_BROWSER to start a Browser in Windows which will provide Training information for Users. I'm doing this by using 'T' type menu entries to Call a Report Transaction to call the FM but this resets the original SAP transaction (as if you'd typed /N in the OKCODE). This is possibly becuase my calling transaction is not in a new task. I can't find a suitable Exit in SMOD as an alternative.
How can I invoke a Browser Window from any screen (that a User might use) without resetting the calling transaction?

  • Files Opened from Windows Explorer Resize Illustrator Window

    Windows 7 Enterprise, SP1
    Illustrator CS6 16.0.3, 64bit
Over the past weeks, opening any Illustrator file (.ai or .eps) from Windows Explorer resizes the main illustrator window. The window "restores down" from my maximized view that I always run. This does not happen when I use the File > Open command from AI. Using File > Open, the AI window remains maximized and my artwork file opens in a tab (my preference).
It's really just a nuisance, but it's wearing thin now. More frustrating, this behavior only started a few weeks ago (been running CS6 for a few months.)
I found a post describing similar behavior from the CS3/2008 era... The fix is a workaround. Lots of complaints about this historically... with plenty of comments like "I hope they finally fix this is CS4."
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1265916#1265916
How may I fix this behavior without writing a batch file and making Registry edits (per 2008 post)?

This definitely isn't a fix, but is the best work-around I've been able to come up with.
    I'm also on Win 7 Enterprise 64-bit using Illustrator 16.0.3 64-bit.
Although Windows/Adobe (I don't know whose fault it is) doesn't maintain the maximized state, it does (for me) seem to remember the last restored down size and window position, so here's what I did:
Restore down the main Illustrator window.
Move the window so that the top left corner is positioned in the top left corner of the screen/desktop.
Resize the window from the bottom-right corner down to the bottom right corner of the screen/desktop.
At this point, it should appear maximized (or very nearly so), even though it actually isn't.
Now (for me at least) when I double-click an AI file from Windows Explorer, the Illustrator window drops out of maximized state to this same nearly maximized state (although technically not maximized).
    Hope this works for others.

  • Guide: how to extract text from any iOS notes app backup on your Mac

Scenario: you had a sweet notes app like DailyNotes, perhaps one that your girlfriend installed while you weren't looking. So it was on her iTunes account, lets say. Then one day you upgrade to a new iOS version and backup all your data. For whatever reason you erase your iPad, install the new version, and recover back all the apps from the backup. (Maybe you were beta testin g prior to that so you wanted to wipe it clean.) Still your data is gone! Or is it?
"Fortunately" you backed up. However all that this means is that the text you entered into DailyNotes is stored somewhere in your backup, inside of a file named something like
"8f5d7ff4111c9b9e4c8dbb7395efdce9c260e0de-20110814-232318", encoded in a .sqlite database file wrapped inside that data.
Now, if you reinstall the DailyNotes app (or whatever) off of the app store under your own user account, will you get your data back as well? I honestly don't know. But I tried to find out, and I could get no straight answers. Most people said I'd lose my data, and the only way to get back my data would be to restore from the old backup, which of course would erase my current data! So I'd have to backup, then restore from the older backup, then restore from the newer backup again. Does anyone realize how LONG these backups and restores take? FOREVER! I don't have that much time guys. I just need a fast way to access a simple text file. Why does iOS make this such a chore? It's my own content, my own data, which is mine, my copyright, my intellectual property, and the iOS is hiding it from me inside an anonymously-named text file.
    SO HERE'S WHAT YOU DO:
Download mono framework here and install it: (free)
    http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/download.html
(this can be easily uninstalled later, it has an uninstaller app)
Download iPhone Backup Extractor here and extract it in your Downloads directory: (free)
    http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com./free-download/
(this can be easily uninstalled later, just delete the folder)
Download SQLite Database Browser 2.0 b1, and extract it in your Downloads directory: (free)
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlitebrowser/
(this can easily be uninstalled later, just delete the app)
You can move the two apps to your Applications directory if you intend to keep them long-term, but you can run them just fine from the Downloads directory which will make them easier to identify and erase after you're done, if you don't plan to keep them around.
Go to Finder and open the iPhone Backup Extractor directory. Resize that window to the side of your screen.
Go to Terminal and set the window where you can see part of it if the previously mentioned Finder window from the last step was floating on top of it.
Type "cd " (yes that's c, d, space) in Terminal then hit command-Tab to switch to Finder.
Drag the folder icon from the title bar of the finder window into the Terminal window that's now in the background. For you newbies, the "title bar" is the VERY topmost edge of the window (the frame of the window) which should have a folder next to the words, "iPhone Backup Extractor" visible in it. You're clicking and dragging THAT folder icon into the terminal window in the background. HIT ALT-TAB AGAIN WHEN DONE.
Now you're back in the Terminal and it should say:
"cd /Users/yourname/Downloads/iphonebackupextractor-latest" after the unix prompt. HIT ENTER.
    Now type:
    mono iPhoneBackupExtractor.exe
This will run the iPhone Backup Extractor app. It takes a few minutes to load because mono is slow (it's emulating Windows basically). Be patient.
NOTE: The Backup Extractor can only see backups stored on your boot drive that are in the users folder of whatever user you're currently logged in as. So if your backup is on an external drive or a CD, etc., just copy it to the desktop.
Once iPhone Backup Extractor loads, you'll see its window where you can select the backup. Select whichever one you want to work with. Then hit Expert mode. Each app that was on your device at the time you made the backup will have a directory shown. It will be named something like:
    com.ramki.dailynotes
Expand the one you want to recover data from by clicking the plus sign next to it. Then expand the Documents directory for it. You'll see a file called something like Daily_Notes.sqlite. Click the dark black box next to this and a checkmark should appear.
Once you've checked the file to recover, click "Extract selected" below and save to your Desktop (or wherever!).
Now quit iPhone Backup Extractor unless you have other data to also extract.
NEXT... OPEN the app SQLite Database Browser 2.0 b1.
Once it loads, open your Daily_Notes.sqlite file (or whatever .sqlite file you extracted, not necessarily Daily_Notes, that's just my example). If you followed my previous steps that file will be on your Desktop.
Once it loads you'll see three buttons at the center of the window near the top called, "Database Structure," "Browse Data," and "Execute SQL." CLICK ON "Browse Data."
Now on the left-hand side of the window there is a pop-up menu with the word "Table: [POP-UP-MENU-IS-HERE] "... CLICK on the pop-up menu. It will actually say the name of one of the database files that's within the SQLite database, something like "ZAPPSTATE" or "ZDAYDATA" or whatever (not "POP-UP-MENU-IS-HERE", that was just text I put as a placeholder since it could be anything really).
Now that you've clicked the pop-up menu, select each item one by one and look at the data that appears in the table.
(Don't worry, you're just working with a COPY of the file, so if you accidentally delete anything it's not a real problem, just delete the .sqlite file and start the steps over from the beginning of this message.)
You should eventually find a table that has the text that you're looking for! Mine was called "ZDAYCONTENT".
WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE DATABASE TABLE, it looks like an Excel spreadsheet. That means you may have to double-click on the database cell to get it to show you the entire contents of that part. (It only shows a truncated text string in each cell, but if you double-click, a new window will open on top of the current window, showing the full text that was in there.) Now you can copy the text out and paste it into another app like Text Edit or MS Word or Pages, etc. You can also export the data in the File Menu > Export to an SQL or CSV file. (CSV is a text file where the data is all there, just separated by commas. This can then be imported into Excel or Numbers or another database or printed, etc., or just opened into Pages or Word or BBEdit etc.)
CAVEATS: Dates will often be shown as a weird number like 3780 or 2863 etc. You may have to figure out on your own what this date means. I honestly have no clue. SQLite Database Browser does not seem to support viewing or exporting PNG and image files.
Other than that good luck. Post any questions here.

  • Error when resizing IE Window

    Hi Folks,
I am a software tester for our company and have been trying
to put Captivate 2 through our certification process. We came
across an error and I was wondering if anyone else has seen
anything similar... We start a new recording session, open up
Internet Explorer and go to a web site (i.e. www.google.com) and
resize the window. This results in an error - "Internet Explorer
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." We click Close and IE shuts down. When Captivate is
not recording we can resize the window without any issues. We are
running Windows XP Pro with IE 6. My personal laptop at home does
the same thing. I've narrowed it down to web sites that place a
curser in a text box by default (the search box on Google, a web
site you need to put in your credentials for). If a text box is not
selected (the cursor is not blinking), then the resize works fine.
Any ideas? I've been trying to work with the Adobe support
and haven't been too successful getting help from them yet. So
until I can end the run-around, I figured I'd post here.
    Thanks all!
    SJ

Hi Rick! Thanks for the quick response! All the computers
I've been using have IE 6. We are not able to upgrade to IE 7
because we know it breaks some of our critical software at the
moment. This happens in Software Simulation using any recording
mode and it I've tried enabling/disabling different options under
"Recording Options". I've also tried different resolutions and
disabling hardware acceleration for the video card as Adobe
suggested in their knowledgebase. All resulted in the error.
I just knew someone would make a comment about resizing the
    window during recording
Yeah, while I don't use Captivate for production
myself, I know the people who do will definately come across this.
In fact, one of the users who came by to try it out found the
problem in the first place. And I found that management doesn't
like workarounds (I tried convincing them) because once we
"certify" it, then any problems become our problem. So I guess I'm
stuck trying to find a solution
It looks like I might finally have another chance to
call Adobe, though, so I'll see if I can get anything from them.
Thanks for your help! And if you happen to think of anything
    else, please let me know.

  • Resizing a window that extends over the Dock

Sometimes a window extends over the Dock, and it becomes difficult to 'select' the little triangle in the bottom right to resize the window. Any attempt to do so 'sees' the Dock icon instead of the window that's overlapping the Dock.
The only way I have found to get around this is to move the window over to the right far enough to get that triangle in the clear space to the right of the Trash icon.
Is that the only way? (Is there perhaps a keystroke that incrementally resizes the selected window to a smaller size than the current one?)
    Thanks.

    Try this:
    property app_name : ""
set user_input to display dialog "Which application's front window would you like to resize?" default answer "" buttons {"Cancel", "OK"} default button "OK"
if button returned of user_input is "OK" then
set app_name to text returned of user_input as string
    end if
    tell application app_name
    activate
    try
    set bounds of window 1 to {4, 93, 1000, 700}
    on error
    display dialog "Not possible"
    end try
    end tell
Just enter the name of the application, e.g. Safari, FireFox. You can set the bounds in the script to anything you want, of course.
It would be nice to be able to detect the frontmost application but so far I can't do that (it sees the script as the frontmost application which is logical enough).

  • System-wide window enhancements (snapping, resizing from any edge)

I've been looking around for a program to make all of my application windows snap to screen edges and other windows. Also it'd be handy if windows could be resized from any edge; perhaps while only holding a modifier key. I couldn't find one, but I did find many comments on forums and such that indicate some people would like one. So, it looks like I'll have to make one.
I'm not really sure where to start, but I'll be looking into the behaviour of Adium (its windows snap). I'm aware that this is likely to be significantly different though, as I want this to be a Preference Pane (probably) that affects windows on a system-wide basis and eventually a per-application basis.
So I guess I need to know some things:
Firstly, would snapping and multi-edge resizing be possible within programming guidelines set by Apple? (I've heard 'interesting' things about Unsanity's APE [http://unsanity.com/haxies/ape] - supposedly it doesn't adhere to the "don't touch the system files" guideline/policy.)
If not, how possible is it? I'm guessing that retro-fitting a system-wide window behaviour won't necessarily be easy. (I know possibility, as a concept, is boolean, but anything is possible. I just want to know if it can be done within reasonable time and effort constraints. Perhaps less than a few months equivalent of man-hours...)
If either or both of those are satisfied, where would one start? User Experience, Core Foundation, Scripting & Automation, Cocoa?
Lastly, if anyone else likes the sound of this and thinks they could do it, by all means, please do.
    Please and thank you.

Check out Mondo Mouse - It lets you resize any re-sizable window using a key shortcut and dragging your mouse. I have it set to the Left Command Key, and then the window will resize in whatever way I drag my mouse.
Mondo Mouse also lets you set a key to move your windows as well. I have my Left Shift Key set, and whenever I push it, the window that is underneath my mouse can be moved any way I want.
I would be very interested in knowing what kinds of haxies you've found yourself, and what they do to enhance your user experience on the Mac. I have found the need to apply several haxies to my system to make it operate in a productive way for me -- in a way that is pleasing to me.
From USB Overdrive, to Mighty Mouse, to Mondo Mouse, to aLunch, to Witch, to Shapeshifter -- with these installed, I can finally feel "at home" with my Mac.
I bought Leopard but I'm back to Tiger until Unsanity updates Mighty Mouse for it.

    Two things to try:
with some Applications it helps to hold down the the "Option Key" while pressing the green "maximize Window" button.
If that does not help try this Apple Script:

    hi,
i wanted to resize my windows partition. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partition from the backup. Is this possible?

I see youhave gotten recommendatons for using WinClone or CampTune.  I have used both and they both work well.
You have asked about using the WIndows 7 utility to backup your drive and restor it onto a larger partition.  I will tell you fro experience that this will probably not do what you want, and may do something that you don't want.  You can use the Windows 7 native backup tool to make a backup of your Windows 7 partition.  It will most liekly end-up making a dive image of the whole drive.  When yourestore that backup, it will try to re-create teh partitions of exactly the same size as they were when the backup was taken, so it won't increase your partition size for you.  Worse, since Windows doesn't natively know how to read./write HFS+ volumes, the backup will make a partition for your MacOS (replacing any you may have now), except that the copy restored by WIndows will be totally worthless, and you will not be able to boot MacOS from it, or even read it under MacOS.
Now I will tell you that I've also had some fairly good success working with the free tool CloneZilla.  Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, and everything else mentioned does cost you money, I thought I would throw it out.  CloneZilla is not as easy to use as the tools mentioned, but it has worked for me int hte past, so it is something to consider.  I tend to use CampTune myself, but that was because I purchased a bundle deal for them and it was included in that deal.
