Resize in illustrator

How do you resize images to a specific size in inches in illustrator?

redbran,
If you wish to change proportionally to a specific W(idth) or H(eight), you may select the artwork and insert the desired number value followed by in for inches in the W or H box of the Transform palette and press Ctrl/Cmd+Enter.
If you wish to change to specific values of W(idth) and H(eight), you may select the artwork and insert the desired number values followed by in for inches in the W and H box of the Transform palette and just press Enter.
Depending on which Reference Point you have selected to the left in the Transform palette, then scaling will be made from the centre or from one of the corners or sides.

  • Problem resizing textbox Illustrator CS

Hi to everybody! I don't speak english very well..I'm sorry! I try to write something! I have a problem with Illustrator CS. It worked very well until few days ago. The problem is I can't resize the textbox now, I dont' have the arrow to do this! But If I enter as Administrator of the pc all works well as few days ago. I've tried to do a new installation of the program, I tried to uninstall and to do a new installation again...but the problem does'nt disappear. Any idea?Thank in advance. Sara

Is it that you no longer have the "arrow" (selection tool) or that you no longer have the bounding box?

  • Resizing in Illustrator CC using the Bounding Box is no longer accurate. What happened?

In Illustrator CC, resizing an object using the bounding box is no longer accurate. Snapping to other objects or the grid or anything is completely wrong and, worse, inconsistent. Here is a single box being resized 3 times to the same object. Each time, it becomes a different size.
I used the center-left handle to resize the black box, snapping it to the right edge of the red box. You can see that, each time, it "snaps" to the edge incorrectly. My 80 pt box becomes 78.479 pt, then 79.295 pt, then 79.518 pt.
This is totally unacceptable, obviously. I'm not sure what the point of guides are if they aren't actually guiding. Does anyone have a fix for this?

    Ethan,
Did you reinstall after updating to Yosemite? I believe the right order/way is to update the OS first, then reinstall the applications, see 6) below.
Or you may have a look at the list since something is obviously wrong.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • How do I resize a vector illustration in Freehand

    Hi there,
I hope someone can help me. I downloaded a vector

Transforming include scaling in FreeHand so look it up in the
    help file (or manual)
To start with (copied from the help file).
    Transforming objects
You can transform objects or points by rotating, scaling,
skewing, reflecting, and moving them. You can make transformations
using the transformation tools, the Transform panel, or an object?s
    transform handles.
You can also apply transformations to objects as editable
effects. After a transform effect has been applied, it is always
live, so you can modify the scale and skew percentage, rotation
angle, and move distance at any time. For more information on
applying transformations as live effects, see Using a Transform
    effect attribute.
Note: Extruded objects are rotated differently than other
objects. For more information, see Extruding objects.
    Transforming objects freely
You can use transform handles to freely transform objects,
including text blocks, and to combine a series of transformations.
You can also use transform handles to transform an object within a
group or a paste inside, or to transform a point within a selected
    path.
If transform handles don?t appear when you double-click an
object, you can display them using FreeHand preferences.
Note: Extruded objects are rotated differently than other
objects. For more information, see Extruding objects.
    To display transform handles:
1 Display general preferences by doing one of the following:
In Windows, press Control+U, then click the General tab.
On the Macintosh, press Command+U, then click the General
    category.
2 Select Double-Click Enables Transform Handles, and click
    OK.
    To transform freely:
1 Using the Pointer tool, double-click the object you want to
    transform.
Eight transform handles appear around the selection, and a
circle appears at the selection?s center point. To disable the
transform handles, double-click away from the selection.
Moving the Pointer tool over and around the selection changes
the pointer (cursor) to indicate which transformation function is
    available.
2 Drag the handles to transform the selection, as follows:
To move the selection, position the pointer over the object
within the selection rectangle, and drag the object to a new
position. Do not drag the center point.
To set the center of rotation, drag the center point to a new
    location.
To rotate the selection, position the pointer just outside a
    transform handle and drag.
Shift-drag to rotate in 45° increments.
To scale the selection, position the pointer on a transform
    handle, and drag.
Shift-drag or drag a corner handle to resize proportionally.
To skew the selection, position the pointer on the dotted
outline between the transform handles and drag.
Shift-drag to constrain the skew horizontally or vertically.
3 To copy the selection as you transform it, click and hold a
handle, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Macintosh), and drag the
handle. A plus (+) sign next to the pointer indicates copying.
To transform an object within a group or inside a clipping
    path:
    1 Click the Pointer tool.
2 Double-click the group or clipping path to activate the
transform handles, and drag to transform it.
3 Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Macintosh) to subselect
the object you want to transform. The object?s transform handles
    will be activated.
4 Press Tilde (~) to superselect objects in the group or
clipping path without moving the center point.
To transform selected points within a path:
1 Double-click a point to activate transform handles for the
entire selection, and drag to transform it.
2 Press Tilde (~) to activate transform handles for the
entire path without moving the center point.

  • Illustrator EPS Imported Into FrameMaker 8

At times I use Document Setup in Illustrator to set a particular size such as a 6" x 4". Then, I resize my object(s) to fit inside this new setup. I save the file as an EPS and import this file into Framemaker by reference. When I do the import, the file blows up in size dramatically and has a lot of extra white space around the image. Is there a way to keep the image constant when importing into Framemaker?

    Paul,
Have you checked that there aren't any spurious graphic elements (such
as empty strings) left behind outside of your new artboard area? Zoom
way out and do a ctrl+A to select all to see if something unexpected
    is getting picked up.
Otherwise, it should be working. I do the same procedure as you
    outlined when resizing in Illustrator.

    Illustrator Resizes on File Open

  • Can't open the illustration. There is not enough room for the window; increase document area and try

    Hi there,
Running Illustrator CS6 on a PC. Everytime I try to open a illustrator file from windows explorer the error written in the subject line come up. I resize the illustrator window to full screen, however upon opening the file again, the window shrinks and the same error comes up. I am still able to open files if I go file>open in the illustrator menu....
this is just a minor annoyance and want a solution to this problem please?

    Hi Ben,
Have updated Illustrator yet? I would suggest to first reset the preferences to see if that helps. Are you using a dual monitor display or any 3rd party plugins?

  • Scaling linked Illustrator graphics in InDesign

    Hi there
I was under the impression that the original dimensions of an Illustrator graphic were of little significance when placed in InDesign, since InDesign recognises it as vector artwork (and shows it as a PDF file in the Links panel with no ppi values, and preflight checks show no problems). I'm having a hard time convincing my colleagues of this, however, and they insist on resizing the graphic in Illustrator before placing it in InDesign.
Are they being a bit silly, or am I mistaken here?
I'd appreciate any helpful information, and would be interested to hear in more depth exactly what's going on when the graphic is placed and how InDesign handles and resamples the information.

    Thanks for the quick response.
I'm aware of the scaling of strokes and styles that you mentioned, and I appreciate that sometimes (when working with type that needs to be consistent, for example) one would want to get it exactly right in Illustrator first. However, in the few instances I am thinking of we have been working with very simple illustrations that don't contain any type or strokes or styles that would be adversly affected by scaling.
My colleagues have been trained to select the content of the graphic and check in the control bar to see that it hasn't been scaled to more than 120 percent. If it has they get uneasy and do a resize in Illustrator (without paying any attention to styles etc., just a simple click and drag bigger). I rather use the Info panel to check the Actual and Effective ppi, and use the preflight to double check when I'm in doubt.
As I said, though, I'm having a hard time trying to convince them that the greater-than-120-percent scaling they're seeing is no cause for panic (with Illustrator graphics).

  • Bug with Illustrator CC with multi display

    Hello everyone,
Since few days I'm having some troubles with Illustrator and Indesign CC.
When I click on the + button to use Illustrator or Indesign in full screen it work well for my main screen but it doesn't work on my second screen.
This is Illustrator in my main screen in full screen.
And now the same thing but with my second screen, as you can see the illustrator is going under the menu bar, and if I want to open a file or etc... everything is weird and useless and I'm not able to move it.
And if I want to resize the illustrator window manually I still have the same problem.
I'm working with 2 screens  (Thunderbolt display + Macbook Pro display) with two differents space.
    Thanks everyone.

Oh thanks! I didn't realise this could effect specific tools as well as the placement of objects, Im having another problem which I thought would be solved by turning off the 'Align to Pixel Grid' but it didn't work

  • Error message when trying to open AI file

When I double click an AI file to open it, I get this message: "Can't open the illustration. There is not enough room for the window, increase document area and try again". This error started happening about a week or two ago. Although it is inconvenient to have to go to File>Open and then locate the file to open it since I am used to doing it the other way at least it is a way to open the AI file. I just discoved that if I double click a graphic in a Adobe Acrobat Pro using the Edit Object I get the same error message. This is a problem.
I have checked previous discussions about this and tried things like unchecking the "open as tab" option in the preferences but that does not work.
I would appreciate any other suggestions since this is very annoying.

From post 15 of this threaad:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3899466#3899466
"I'll add an update to this problem using a Windows 7 Toshiba laptop running CS6 - I began to recieve the same message and Illustrator would resize itself to 1"h x 5"w box in the upper left of my screen.  Illustrator itself would be hidden behind the error dialogue box.
This would happen when I'd select an Illustrator file in Windows Explorer.  The first workaround was to maximize Illustrator and open the file through the Illustrator File>Open dialogue.  This always worked.
The final fix was to manually resized illustrator to about 1/3 screen size and try to open the file again in Windows Explorer.  Finally the files would open from Windows Explorer.  Keep reading.
However, each time I opened a file Illustrator would do a little hula dance and resize a good bit smaller than what I'd manually set it to.  It took about 4 resizes and 4 opening of files  = each time resizing the illustrator window larger until it actually occupied the whole screen.  It's working normally now."
Also, what happens if you open Illustrator and use File > Open?
    --OB
Edit to add: There are other suggestions in that thread as well. Also several other threads dealing with the same subject if you search on  the error message you are getting. <OB>

  • Aluminum's with External display oddities

I have two different clients that have Aluminum PB's and 23" Apple Cinema displays (aluminum as well). One client when he drags his Entourage window to the Cinema display it stops checking mail. If he drags it back to his PB display it does it's mail checking schedule without a problem.
The other client when he puts an Illustrator document on the Cinema display it will resize the Illustrator document to about a 1/3 of it's size. If you stretch the corner back out it will then snap back to an even smaller sliver of the document screen. You can keep doing this until the document eventually vanishes but is still considered open by Illustrator.
Any ideas? Any one else with weird external display behavior?

I have exactly the same problem with my MacBook Air connected to CinemaView 24 display. Mail printing is fine with the display disconnected. Could the CinemaView be the problem?

  • I'm having problems with the opening frame and can't find a way to deal with it.

When I open a file, the full Illustrator frame changes from maximum to a smaller frame. Why? How can I set the program to stay at a full frame and not have to resize the Illustrator every time I open a file?

Thanx Harron, I thought to myself that I was either going to mess up somewhere and get lost or just screw up my settings, but I followed the instructions you gave and it worked perfect.
    Thanx again,
    Sean

  • Vector graphics import, labelling dilema

I'm using Framemaker 10, Autodesk Illustrator Publisher, Inkscape, Windows Vista.
I have imported some CAD illustrations from Autodesk Illustrator into Illustrator Publisher.  There I have labelled them.
I have then saved/published them as .svg files.
If I import them directly in to Framemaker, they open with the callouts at a strange angle and 3/4 of the picture missing. Therefore I have to open them in Inkscape, bring the whole picture in to frame and line up the callouts.
Now I import them into Framemaker.  The trouble is, the numbering is difficult to predict.  The labelling/callouts/numbering always turns what looks to be bold.  But the real problem is resizing the illustrations.  Because there is no way of predicting the size of the output from Publisher, the illustrations have to be resized in Framemaker.  This would be no problem usually as the illustrations are svg (vector graphics) but of course it resizes the labelling/callouts/numbering which makes it look really daft when I have 10 illustrations all with different sized fonts.
What do people in here do?  Does anyone else use Vector graphics in their manuals.
I would really appreciate some response on this as I feel I've hit a brick wall here.
    Thanks

    > I'm using Framemaker 10, Autodesk Illustrator Publisher, Inkscape, Windows Vista.
    Is Adobe Illustrator available?
    > I have imported some CAD illustrations from Autodesk Illustrator into Illustrator Publisher.  There I have labelled them.
Why not label them in Frame? We do, and it has advantages beyond avoiding text rendering and scaling issues, such as being able to re-use the same illustration for multiple purposes with different callouts. We use embedded callouts in our service manuals (the XML engine requires it), and depopulate the callouts (usually just switching off one layer) for re-use of that art in the Frame manuals.
    > I have then saved/published them as .svg files.
Let me admit that I have no experience with SVG, due to lack of SVG support across all of our workflow, but we use vector EPS extensively.
    > If  I import them directly in to Framemaker, they open with the callouts at  a strange angle and 3/4 of the picture missing. Therefore I have to  open them in Inkscape, bring the whole picture in to frame and line up  the callouts.
If SVG has preview/thumbnail embedded images, is there a chance that this is just a preview problem? What happens at print or render to PDF?
    > Now I import them into Framemaker.  The  trouble is, the numbering is difficult to predict.  The  labelling/callouts/numbering always turns what looks to be bold.  But  the real problem is resizing the illustrations.
This is one of the downsides of embedded callouts. If the images cannot be pre-sized, either the text will scale arbitrarily, which is ugly, or it won't scale, which is a disaster. More bad news - your stroke weights are scaling too.
    > Because there is no way  of predicting the size of the output from ...
I would junk any image editor, vector or raster, that didn't provide that basic level of output control.
    > Does anyone else use Vector graphics in their manuals?
Yes, sourced from Pro-E, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Frame and extractions from supplier PDFs of unknown origination. We clean them up in Adobe Illustrator, using specific dimensional extents, and a stroke weight that's acceptable for a limited range of up and down scalings. Callouts are added in Frame, using a self-masking arrow, and a self-masking bubble with a grouped text frame and a paragraph format specific to callout use.
