RESIZE option in LR4's Convert to DNG and DNG Converter 7

Besides the option for lossy compression I would love to see the Resize option from LR4 Beta's Export dialog in DNG Converter 7 as well as in LR4's "Library>Convert to DNG" function.
In the wake of cameras like the Nikon D800 and others with huge image files and easy option to convert to smaller sized DNGs would be very helpful.

Right. I'm not into the whole lossy compression thing. I like the idea of making smaller raw files, but I want the megapixels which remain to be good megapixels.
Now I get what you mean. Apologies.
That would be interesting and of course I absolutely second it: DNG with variable resolution but lossless compressed!
That would be a great option. So why not just offer both independently - resolution and compression?
Just don't disable the "Resize to fit" switch when "Use Lossy Compression" is off.
I understand the perils with this and I also understand that it's kind of counterproductive to the thought of a RAW/DNG file. But in the end, isn't it about flexibility and not purity of a system? Bring on some big fat warnings that make it clear to the user: "you are now leaving the path of a non-destructive file format!" But let the user decide.
For more safety you could even add the need to unlock this functionality in the Preferences.
Side note:
There have been plenty of high-res DSLRs so far, Nikon D3X, Canon 5D MkII, 1Ds MkIII, Sony SLT-A77, SLT-A55, NEX-7, Alpha A-850 Alpha A-900 - but none of them seems to have stirred up the discussion about need and sanity of high megapixel DSLRs like the D800 now does.
It's probably because it's the highest so far and Nikon offers no lower resolution RAW as Canon does. What most seem to agree on however is that the high megapixel count can be nice for many and provides flexibility, but it can also be a burden at the same time.
No idea why Nikon don't offer sRAW like Canon do. But considering all this, a flexible option for smaller DNGs with individually settable compression and/or Resize would be a tremendous accomplishment!

How do I tell if I have already paid for a membership? When I try to convert a pdf file to word, it looks like it is processing the task, but then I can't find the converted file when it says view converted file. Huh? Adobe is on my mac dashboard, I have had an account but can't see the results . . . thanks.

    Hi subscription question,
I've checked your account; it looks like you tried to place two separate orders this morning, but it doesn't appear that either went through. However, it does sound as though you've been able to convert a file successfully. What happens when you log in to your account at https://cloud.acrobat.com/files? Do you see your converted file there? All converted files are automatically stored in your online account, even when you convert from within Reader.

  • Date issue - month converting to date and date converting to month

I've got some data in a text file for SQLLDR from an SQL SERVER.
The date columns in it are in YYYY-MM-DD format eg- 2011-01-03 00:00:00
but in oracle we are using MM-DD-RRRR.
Don't know why DD and MM are getting interchanged. Please help.
This is my control file for sqlldr:
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE 'F:\NV\Permits\SQLLDR\permits.txt'
    REPLACE
    INTO TABLE lot.p_permit
FIELDS Terminated by "~" TRAILING NULLCOLS
    CP_PermitID  "TRIM (:CP_PermitID)",
    CP_SubmitDate "to_date(to_date(substr(:CP_SubmitDate, 1,19),'RRRR-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'),'DD-MM-RRRR')",
    CP_IssueDate "to_date(to_date(substr(:CP_IssueDate, 1,19),'RRRR-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'),'DD-MM-RRRR')")

You are converting date to date. First TO_DATE
to_date(substr(:CP_IssueDate, 1,19),'RRRR-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')correctly converts first 19 characters of string CP_IssueDate to date. Now look what happens with second one. TO_DATE first argument is string. Since to_date(substr(:CP_IssueDate, 1,19),'RRRR-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') is date:
to_date(to_date(substr(:CP_SubmitDate, 1,19),'RRRR-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'),'DD-MM-RRRR')implictly converts to_date(substr(:CP_IssueDate, 1,19),'RRRR-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') back to string using default date format and then converts it back to date using 'DD-MM-RRRR' format. Obviously if default date format is not 'DD-MM-RRRR' you will either get wrong date or an error. Anyway, use:
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE 'F:\NV\Permits\SQLLDR\permits.txt'
    REPLACE
    INTO TABLE lot.p_permit
FIELDS Terminated by "~" TRAILING NULLCOLS
    CP_PermitID  "TRIM (:CP_PermitID)",
    CP_SubmitDate "to_date(substr(:CP_SubmitDate,1,10),'YYYY-MM-DD')",
    CP_IssueDate "to_date(substr(:CP_IssueDate,1,10),'YYYY-MM-DD')"
    )SY.

  • Is there any reason to Archive both a DNG and DNG with raw embedded?

In Real World Camera Raw, which suggests using DNG, they seem to be advocating making an archive of both the Camera Raw edited and Bridge rated conversions to DNG files, and another set of the raw files converted to DNG with raws embedded. If you take the raw files from Camera Raw and make one save to DNG with raws embedded, it seems that you could use this set both for a working copy and also archive it. Any reason to make a second DNG set just to have a set without Camera Raw edits and ratings?

That is a good question and one no one can answer not even Adobe. If
management or whatever should change at Adobe in the future they could
decide to remove support for old cameras. Cameras like those that are 5 or
10 years old (we are talking in the future here). I would imagine that...
    A) Adobe would warn user's ahead of time.
    B) You could keep an older copy of DNG Converter that does support those.
With that the only time limiting factor is the operating system a time may
come where the program simply won't run.
So nothing is guaranteed. However, I think for the foreseeable future
support for even the oldest of cameras that are currently supported is
pretty safe. Nothing is forever however.

  • How do I convert multiple full sized DNGs to lossy DNGs within Lightroom?

    Hi,
When I select multiple DNGs from within Lightroom, and on my mac go to menu>Library>Convert photo to DNG and then choose to convert to DNG with the lossy mode selected, only one of the selected DNGs is converted. How do I convert more at the same time? I have a large library, and I want to convert ~100gb of photos to lossy.
    Thanks in Advance!

As far as my own collection goes, I would say I love about 1-2% of my pictures. I would like to use the top 5% for making printed family albums, and I use Lightroom to develop these images. The next 5-10% I would partially process and keep somewhere online at lower resolution, like on flickr. The next 20-40% I would like to keep around in storage, and the rest I trash.
These last 20-40% that I want to keep would be fine as lossy DNGs. I would treat them as JPEGs that have a bit more dynamic range for the future, but as I shoot with a 24mp Nex-7, they are huge, and won't ever be pixel-peeped. I have examined the difference between my 25mb DNGs and the converted 7mb lossy DNGs, and for my uses, they are functionally identical.
The issue is that I need to import them into Lightroom before I rate them. Once I rate my images, I flag the ones I want to work on further, and delete the worst. I would like a way to convert the remaining ones more easily. Of course if I knew which ones were 2nd-rate keepers from the outset, I would import them as lossy DNGs to start with.
I often have 3-4000 images to process after a holiday, so I need a fast method of compressing these DNGs.

  • Difference between DNG vs. dng?

    Hi,
I've looked online but can anyone explain the difference between DNG and dng in Lightroom? Most people say there is no difference, but I'm not sure Adobe would include both if there was no difference. Other responses referrenced different OS systems utuliziing DNG vs dng. Can anyone clarify?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for all prompt replies especially Rob, LittlePaleFace and JRS54.
Just to summarize for other people and other non technical newbies like myself who may be searching the forums and wondering.
There is no difference in Lightroom 4 whether you choose DNG or dng, as stated by numerous comments and confirmed by a call to Adobe.
The difference between dng and DNG is more of a programming language nuance not related to Lightroom, which is explained below. Please don’t read on unless you really care about file system naming formats.
The difference is related if you are using an ASCII based system such as Linux, as capital letters are assigned different numbers than lower case.
    http://www.asciitable.com/
    D = 68
    N = 78
    G = 71
    d = 100
    n = 110
    g = 103
    lowercase(217) = uppercase value (313) +32.
For example if you have one file named example.dng and saved another as example.DNG, Unix would see it as two different files, but in Windows, which is not case sensitive, it would just overwrite the example.dng file (since it considers example.dng and example.DNG as the same file).
OS X is built on Unix but and the default  file system on a hard drive with OS X is HFS+( Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and it is typically set to case insensitive.
If you install Lightroom 4 on a partition or hard drive that  has a file system that is case sensitive (eg. OS X installed on a case sensitive partition), Lightroom will not run.
Regardless, Adobe doesn’t seem to support any platforms where it might have an effect so the, DNG vs dng is a non-issue (as DNG, dng is an Adobe format).
    Thanks everyone.

  • How do I convert raw images with side car to Dng and

How do I convert raw images with side car to Dng and preserve the sidecar info in the DNG?
I have tons of raws + xmp sidecars that i want to convert to dng, because the raws are from different camera brands and i want to get everything simplified. so that i do not have to worry if I will be able to access the raws in the future, if I decide I want to rework some of the files.
    T.I.A.

If the images are already in your catalog you can select them then choose Convert Photos to DNG from the Library menu. You'll be given the option of deleting the original raw files. Either way, Lr will only display the newly created DNG files.
The alternative, which is better suited to images not already in the catalog is to use the Adobe DNG Converter

  • Camera Raw 5.2 and DNG Converter Available - Note from Adobe

Camera Raw 5.2 and the DNG Converter is now available:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2008/11/camera_raw_52_and_dng_converte.html
Lightroom will be updated to version 2.2 with equivalent camera support in December.

Lightroom, Camera Raw and DNG Product Manager

Well, I managed to locate and download both the ACR 5.2 and the DNG 5.2, but it was a bit of a challenge. I have a couple of comments regarding the DNG installation.
As a sometime OS beta tester, I have developed a habit of keeping C:\ for the operating system only. When a new OS or beta is issued, I just format C: and install the new OS. I try to keep applications off C:. It is hard, though, with all the default installations. It would be nice to have the option to install DNG.exe in my applications partition.
My workflow involves importing NEF's from the memory card to a folder, and at the same time converting those NEF's to DNG's and putting them in a different folder in a different partition. Both these NEF's and DNG's are archived. A copy of the DNG's are used as working images. The virtue of DNG's is that there are no sidecar files to keep track of when exporting images. Unless I really mess up, I never go back to the NEF's again. I guess that I am an "outlier" too. I guess that this is essentially the 5 - A "double DNG-only" workflow, using type 2, the native-DNG-DNG system. This is discussed in detail by Barry Pearson at http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/safety.htm#personal
I do like the camera profiles. I previously have used the Fors script. My Nikon D200 lacked red and the Fors script fixed that. Not surprisingly, different profiles are appropriate for different image types. Is there any way of determining the methodology and reasoning between the different profiles, and what specific problems each one is designed to correct. This might permit better matching profiles to image types, with less trial and error.

Currently the upgrade to Snow Leopard (DVD in the box) is $29 US Cy from Apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
Contrary to what it says there, that is all you need.  You DO NOT need to upgrade to Leopard first.  You can go straight from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard for $29.
CS4 will cease to be upgradeable towards the end of this year, perhaps as early as November of 2012.
The superior rendering in ACR 7.1 is more than worth the cost of the upgrade.  You could even say that converting one irreplaceable raw image is worth the total cost.

Try Easy Find first, it's totally free, although Find Any File is indeed faster.

Finally if you still can't get DNG Converter 7.1 to launch, then download version 6.4, but nothing earlier than 6.4:

  • Convert all images to DNG without stopping for errors

When I convert images to dng format i don't sit around by my computer and wait for them all to convert. I have better things to do. I will go run an arrand or convert a bunch while i go to sleep. The problem is that lightroom stops converting when it encounters an error. Can you make a feature that will skip the picture with the error and log it to a log book so I know which ones didn't get converted. This way, when i come back to my computer the next day, I don't have to start the long agonizing process all over again, I can just work with the error photos to see what the problem is.
The same problem could happen with importing, or exporting, or converting to jpeg and exporting. These are all very time consumeing batch processes that need to have the option to skip error photos and log them to a log book instead of suspending the whole export, import, etc.
    Thanks!!!!!

I want to claw back some space from iTunes by making all my music AAC, as this seems to be about two thirds file size compared to AIFF and MP3.
    This is incorrect.
AAC and MP3 are almost identical in files size at the same bit rate.
At 128 kbps, songs are ~ 1 MB per minute.
At 128 kbps, file sizes are ~1/10th the size of AIFF or WAV.
Is there a quick way to do this without duplicating each file in the process using export?
You don't use export to convert songs.
Ideally, you want to convert from the best quality file (the CD) available.
Converting from one lossy format (AAC or MP3) to another lossy format will further degrade the quality.
    If you want to convert all your music to AAC;
Open iTunes prefs -> Advanced - Importing.
Select AAC 128 kbps. This is the default and a good compromise between size and quality. MP3 at 128 kbps will not be as good as AAC at 128 kbps.
Select all the songs you want to convert.
Go to menu Advanced -> Aconvert selections to AAC.
Once it has finished, you can delete the old files.
To find them easily, menu Edit -> View options and select Kind.
Click on this box in the column header to sort on this. Delete the files which are not AAC.

  • When importing images from my camera, LR is converting my images to DNG, but, not saving my CR2 format as well.  How can I figure this out?

I am shooting with a 5D Mark ii and have been noticing a lot of noise/grain to my images.  Canon asked me to send them a few examples in the CR2 format.  When I did a spotlight search on my Mac not one CR2 file showed up.  All have been converted to DNG and it seems I have "lost" the CR2 format.

Rob, the option to retain the original Raw file (in this case CR2) is in conversion to DNG done from the Library module, not to conversions done during importation when Copy as DNG is selected, because in this case the original remains on the card.
CDPhoto, if, on the Import page, you select Copy instead of Copy as DNG, your files on the hard disc will be CR2s. If your really do want them converted to DNG, in the right side panel select File Handling/Make a Second Copy To: and designate a location. The second copy will be CR2.

I am importing Nikon D200 NEF file into lightroom and converting them in DNG.
DNG file are converted into 240 dpi instead native D200 300dpi.
Do I have control in lightroom with will set my resolution 300 dpi after converting.

Ok but if I use Crop tool in PSCS3 with front image option I would lake to have 300 dpi and not add another step before printing 4x6 at 300 dpi (1200x1800)

  • How can I safely convert CR2 files to DNG after Import from catalog

Images on my laptop from 2 photoshoots in the studio today were EXPORTED from laptop as catlog and imported to desktop as catalog.
I imported without moving the files anywhere since I was instructed to move that folder to its final resting place.
The 125 images were importred into LR4 but I see they are still CR2 files.
Is there a way to convert these guys to DNG inplace? or is it safe to re-import these. I don't want the side car gig.

Convert to DNG (Library Menu) - do not re-import.

  • Photos originally edited in LR3 change the Develop options in LR4

Hi, when I access in Lightroom 4.4 a folder which had been edited originally (and imported) in Lightroom 3, the options and settings for Developing and editing in LR 4 change to appear like the old options in LR3 (Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light and Blacks, instead of Highlights, shadow, whites and blacks etc..).   Does this make any difference?  Why is Lightroom 4 doing this.  Most of the files I am trying to edit have not been touched before in LR 3 but were simply imported originally into the catalogue from LR3.  Is there any way around this?
    Thanks.

This happens because photos originally edited in LR3 (called Process Version 2010) do have different sliders than photos originally edited with LR4 (called Process Version 2012).
Your photos edited in LR3 should not change their appearance by leaving them in Process Version 2010. If you change them to Process Version 2012, your photos will most likely need to be re-edited, as the appearance will change when you change the Process Version.
Use Settings->Process->2010 or Settings->Process->2012 from within the develop module to convert back and forth.
