Resizeing issues between Illustrator and Indesign

I am trying to import an illustrator image into indesign for a business card. Every time I try to bring it over to indesign it changes size. However when I look at it's dimensions in the control panel in indesign the size appears to be the same as before I placed it. Does any one know where this discrepancy comes from?

You need to clarify a lot of things before we can answer this. First, waht version of ID, and what OS?
With that out of the way, what do you mean by "Every time I try to bring it over to indesign it changes size."? Are you placing it more than once? Are you editing and relinking? When you place it, are you draggin a new frame with the place cursor, placing in an existing frame, or just clicking and releasing?
What crop option have you selected in the import options when you originally place the object?

  • Colour discrepencies between illustrator and InDesign

    Hi!
    I am a semi-amateur CS user, and am trying to create branding and a brochure for my own new business I'm starting.
    I have drawn a logo in illustrator, which is a single solid colour, as well as some extra branding motifs which are a collection of simple silhouettes in a further 3 solid colours. I've selected pantone colours for all of these as I understand this will ensure consistent printing in future.
    However I'm now creating out brochure in InDesign, and when I use the same pantone colours they look considerably different than they do in illustrator, and have different CMYK/RGB values. I'm placing the logo and motifs into the brochure in native .ai format.
    As a workaround I changed the inDesign colours to process, using the CMYK values from the illustrator logo, but even then the RGB values appear slightly different. However at least all the colours look the same - until, I export the brochure to PDF, when the inDesign colours look fine, but the logos I've placed from illustrator change colour drastically??
    Is it pantone causing the issue? We are a tiny web-based company and are only ever going to be printing business cards and a small number of brochures, perhaps occasional headed letters (not using pre-printed headed paper) so maybe it just doesn't matter and I should stick with ordinary CMYK colours?
    I am using CS6, and have synced colours in Bridge.
    Any help would be massively appreciated as I've exhausted Google and am helpless as to where to turn next!
    Thanks,
    Natasha

    I've selected pantone colours for all of these as I understand this will ensure consistent printing in future.
    Using Pantone Colors for a CMYK job wouldn't necessarily ensure consistency for future printing—to get the same color appearance the printing conditions have to be the same or the values have to be adjusted to accommodate the new printing conditions. An extreme example would printing the same CMYK values on glossy paper on a sheetfed press and then on newsprint, the printed color would change in appearance.
    What do I do if I'm working on images for web, or if i want to take illustrations etc from the CMYK brochure and change them to RGB for the website?
    The displayed appearance of CMYK values—mixes you make yourself or specified Pantone mixes—depends on the document's assigned CMYK profile. Change the assigned profile from US SWOP to US Newsprint and you'll see what I mean (Edit>Assign Profiles).
    So, if you are designing the printed materials for one printing condition, the document CMYK profile needs to be correct for that destination. In that case you can get the RGB equivalents (or hex values in CC2014) of your InDesign swatches via the color picker. If you want sRGB values make sure the document's assigned RGB profile is sRGB. Here my document's assigned CMYK and RGB profiles are the default US SWOP Coated and sRGB and the color picker is giving me the sRGB and hex equivalents of US SWOP's 50% magenta.
    In the case of images, if a CMYK image was saved with its profile it can be accurately converted to any RGB space. In Photoshop you can use Save for Web to convert a copy of the CMYK image to sRGB or another RGB space, but if you are saving for web without an embedded profile sRGB would be best.
    Alternatively you can leave your images as RGB in the layout and let the conversion to any CMYK destination happen at export or output. If you do that you have to watchout for color gamuts—RGB colors that are not printable. Turning on Overprint Preview shows you how RGB colors will change when they are eventually converted.

  • CS4 question re:Illustrator and InDesign

    Mordy mentioned increased support with Illustrator and InDesign.
    Can anyone enlighten me on what the support is? Can InDesign place native Illustrator files WITHOUT having the AI files saved with pdf compatibility?
    Thank you in advance.

    No, I just chuckled when I read it.
    However, my questioned has to do with client submitted art where the client does not save it with pdf compatibility and does not supply supporting links and fonts. I most likely have the fonts, but I can do nothing with the missing links.
    Anyway, I doubted this would work but I am curious what Mordy meant with easier interaction between Illustrator and InDesign.

  • Adobe Illustrator and InDesign CS5 crash when trying to place images.

    Hi there
    My Mac is quite new and was originally a migration (using Migration Assistant) from an older Mac.
    Illustrator and InDesign in CS5 were both crashing often and most of the time it's when placing an image (in either application) – it doesn't crash each time I try to place an image, but 90% of the crashes are when placing an image.
    We tried lots of things, like cleaning out the fonts, clearing font caches etc. After several months of that, we decided to wipe the Mac clean and start from scratch. It has been reformatted with a clean install of the OS and only minimal additional software added. Although quite a few fonts have been reinstalled, they all validate in Font Book. I've also done a full Memtest which passed all the test.
    One other thing of note is that the Adobe Updater fails to complete an update and so we have had to update each application manually from the Adobe website.
    I would be so grateful someone could help shed some light on what is going on. Here's an EtreCheck report – couldn't post it on here for some reason, but I have it on a post in Apple Community Forums, here... https://discussions.apple.com/message/26970885?ac_cid=op123456. Can also provide crash reports from the Console if useful.
    Thanks in advance. Any ideas gratefully received – I've run out!
    ps. I have 10 colleagues with same OS version and CS5 (some even have the exact same model of Mac). They don't have this issue.

    Thanks, I will do.
    I posted it here because this is happening on a clean drive/clean install and I have 10 other macs (including some of the same model) all running OS X 10.9.5/Adobe CS5 and not having this problem.

  • Smart objects from Illustrator and Indesign dimensions problem

    I have been trying to find an answer to this problem for 6 months now and surprised no one else has tried to find any answers.
    When we import something from illustrator or indesign as a smart object, for some reason the objects width and height will not keep their  dimensions in proportion.
    When the asset is first imported as a smart object it says the width and height are exactly 100%. However after that if you try to change the dimensions they will be out of proportion, usually the width will be 100% but the height will be out by about 1% to begin with. When you scale up, the percentages fall further and further apart. See image attached.
    This has become a real problem for our workflow as the creative director insists we must  correct every layer which has this issue by typing in the sizes manually, but then this doesnt always fix the problem either depending on which version of photoshop you are using.
    Why does this happen, and how can we fix it for good?
    Thanks, Chris.

    I do not have the answer for I don't have illustrator and indesign.  I do have Photoshop and have notice that it try to match resolutions and maintain sizes but it may also scale placed object etc. There are some some Photoshop preferences setting that can effect some operations. Photoshop also has support for non square pixels.
    Make some test if illustrator and indesign have setting for pixel aspect ratio and DPI resolution. Make sure all documents have the same pixel aspect ratio and same DPI resolution and that the vector object to be imported are not larger then the Photoshop document their being imported to.
    Thanks for the suggestions, but none of these would be the answer. Illustrator is Vector so it does not use DPI / Pixel aspect ratios etc.

  • [MAC OS X - Illustrator CS5.1] DragDrop between Illustrator and Extension

    Hi,
    What I would like to achieve is to handle Drag and Drop between Illustrator and Creative suite extension (specially from Illustrator to extension, designed for Illustrator).
    I would like to get a reference or a pointer on the selection / objects dropped on my extension, and then do something with the selection / objects dropped in my ex extension. Pretty much like they did in the Symbol swatch.
    So, here it is the code implemented (in my POC extension):
    Scripts:
    // Called when the user moves the drag proxy onto the drop target. private function dragEnterHandler(event:DragEvent):void {             Alert.show("DragEnter");             // Accept the drag only if the user is dragging data            // identified by the 'color' format value.             if (event.dragSource.hasFormat('air:bitmap'))           {           // Get the drop target component from the event object.            var dropTarget:Canvas=Canvas(event.currentTarget);
              // Accept the drop.                       DragManager.acceptDragDrop(dropTarget);         } }
    // Called if the target accepts the dragged object and the user // releases the mouse button while over the Canvas container. private function dragDropHandler(event:DragEvent):void {                  //Only Image available?                   var data:Object = event.dragSource.dataForFormat('air:bitmap');
          //Test: Quick and Dirty!!                 var data2:BitmapData = data as BitmapData;                    var myBitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(data2);
          myImage.addChild(myBitmap);                   Alert.show(data.toString()); }
    Interface:
    <mx:HBox>     <mx:Canvas                                    id="myCanvas"                                  dragDrop="dragDropHandler(event)"                      dragEnter="dragEnterHandler(event)"                               width="100"                                   height="100"                                    backgroundColor="#FFFFFF"                    borderStyle="solid"                                           />
        <mx:Image id="myImage" width="100" height="100"/>   </mx:HBox>
    It works. But right now, the only available in the Dragsource object is a bitmap.
    I've used the debugger to check if I could find something else, but I did not.
    I have also tried to use the NativeDragManager. But it is pretty much the same.
    I'm stuck.
    Anyone could help me?
    Does anyone know if it is possible to retrieve something else than a bitmap form the dragsource object?
    So any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Toto.

  • Any known compatible issues between Illustrator CS6 & Photoshop CS2?

    Any known compatible issues between Illustrator CS6 & Photoshop CS2?? thanks alot.

    What exactly do you want to do with both the apps?
    Since the exchange of files from AI to PS is based on PDF, I wouldn't expect problems. The only question is, if Photoshop CS2 will be able to read PDF 1.5, since that's the format AI CS6 embeds in its files. If it doesn't work, you could still save a PDF from AI and make it any other PDF version.
    Illustrator can read lower version PSD.
    Copy-Paste might be a problem. I can't experiment, since I don't have that PS version any more.

    I have a CC student membership for one year, but I can only download trial versions of for example illustrator and indesign (30 days). How do I solve this problem?

    If there is no billing issue,
    Creative Cloud applications unexpectedly revert to trial mode | CS6, CCM
    If you use Photoshop at all, you may need to install the latest update to resolve this issue. See this blog post for more information:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2013/01/photoshop-13-0-413-1-2-updat es-now-available.html
    If you do not have Photoshop, then try the solution that others have mentioned previously:
    Open the Adobe Application Manager (AAM).
    If applicable, let AAM complete any automatic updates and restart itself.
    Sign in with your Adobe ID. (Optionally, you can close AAM at this point.)
    Open a CS6 application (e.g. InDesign CC).
    If prompted (e.g. you get the trial screen), click "License This Software" and sign in with your Adobe ID.

  • Printing problem with Epson R290 Illustrator and inDesign

    I am running CS2 on Leopard and have recently purchased an Epson R290. The first time I used it with Illustrator and InDesign it worked fine but now whenever I print anything it prints a tiny version (about a sixth of the real size) of the design in the top left corner of the page. It does this both with new documents and old ones that used to print ok.

    Since I posted the message about this problem I have discovered that it can be worked around by choosing a higher quality print. ie if you choose plain paper when printing from Illustrator or InDesign the printer prints a reduced size image but if you choose Ink jet mat or glossy the print comes out fine. I don't have this problem with Photoshop but that may be that I always print high quality from that application. I don't use Appleworks Draw so don't know whether this solves the problem for that application but iWork documents print ok.
