Resizing a document when making a pdf
How do I resize a document that is originally 11X17 to be 8.5 X 11 (similar to "print to fit") when I am exporting an InDesign document to PDF?
When I used Quark, I created pdf's by going through the print window and was able to downsize my document to fit 8.5 X 11 paper.
Is there a way to do that with InDesign?
I do have Acrobat installed. I know how to use Distiller (the old fashioned way).
I know how to create pdfs through the print window, as I said, this is the way I created pdfs from my Quark documents...I just do not have this option in the current version of InDesign. I switched from Quark because I wanted to "upgrade" because I thought InDesign would be more efficient.
But as with any change of system/software/procedure, there's always kinks to work through and this is one that's giving me grey hairs.
I have a 24 page newspaper that I upload to our website but the general public usually doesn't have access to a printer that can print 11X17 pages. Also, a smaller physically sized document takes up less space on the web server. Therefore, I need to find a way to change the size of the document in a way that is not more time consuming than it used to be. Otherwise, I might have to consider switching back to Quark which would be unfortunate because I really like InDesign.

Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?
Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?
So if I have an Indesign document 84x55 with a 3mm bleed but I want a PDF from that document to crop at 85x55 (adding .5mm to the left and right of the PDF), the crop marks are offset by 3mm but I want the left and right crop to be .5mm out into the bleed and not at the document edge.
Resizing the Indesign file is ruled out for the moment.
Thanks, TimThe automatic crop marks will always indicate the trim size of the document as defined in Document Setup, so the simple answer is no. You will need to draw custom crop marks in the slug area. You can set the slug area my clicking More Options in Document Setup.
This is a highly unusual request. The purpose of crop marks is to indicate the one and only trim area for the page. Why do you want crop marks that don’t match the document size? -

When making a PDF in Indesign CS5 crashes?
Is there any way to reset the PDFs Presets in Indesign. The High Quality PDF (that is a preset already in Indesign) started to crash ages ago. I just made up new PDF Presets. Now it seems that when making PDFS whether Press Quality or the ones I have made myself it crashes. I launch Indesign then can make a PDF but then when I open another document it crashes again? Any help greatly appreciated
Please see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for directions to to produce a Hang report, then a forced crash and report, and put both of them on Pastebin.com, not here, and put links to both of them here. We may be able to pin down the problem from the reports.
I'm about to quit for the day, so either someone else will help you, or I'll pick up again in the morning. -
InDesign CS5.5 and Acrobat X crashing OS X system when making large pdf
All of a sudden my mac has taken to crashing when I use ID CS5.5 to make a pdf. It seems to be mainly when making a larger pdfx1-a for repro. I've been doing this daily for months, no problem. Suddenly two days ago it became a problem. You send the pdf to export and a few seconds later, black screen followed by grey screen with the 'your mac has been restarted because of a problem' message. ID then takes ages to re-load.
Neither ID nor Acrobat have updated to cause this, as far as I know, and nothing changed in thr system at that time.
I've tried trashing ID's prefs and cache files, and trashing the Acrobat prefs as well, but it still happens.
I'm on 10.9.2, Mac Mini with fusion drive and 16GB RAM.
Anyone had this or got any ideas, please?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.Hmm that's a good question.
It's lots of files, but now i think about it, they are all based on one original. I can't remember whether completely unrelated files have crashed the system, so I will test that. I think they have, because I was working on other stuff yesterday, but I will check it out.
Thanks for the reply. -

Do I really need to name the file when making a PDF?
When I use Export for making a PDF, the name of my open InDesign file is not automatically offered as the name of the PDF.
Does anyone know if I change this? My filenames are long and very precise, and any typo would be bad.
Thanks. That's what I thought I would do when I noticed the PDF creation was not using the InDesign file name, but I can't because since I am making a PDF, only PDFs are shown in my source folder. All other file types are filtered out.
I've never seen this behavior before - I gotta be missing some PDF creation setting somewhere, but I can't find one.
I'm suppose I will have to copy a filename to Notepad and paste it in the export window. (Doesn't that seem a little lame though?) -
Alters Microsoft Word Document when Put into PDF, help!
Hi All,
I wonder if someone can help me. I am trying to convert some microsoft word documents into a PDF format, however each time I do it, the end pdf document isn't what the word document is like .The text and pictures are moved and altered.
I have tried converting it on 3 different computer, but no luck.
Does anyone know why?
ThanksHi fantabell,
Welcome to the forum!
Just out of curiosity… have you checked the page size for the conversion process? I have found that Adobe being a US company have the “letter” page size set as standard where as us Europeans would predominantly use A4 sized paper.
Click on the Adobe PDF menu in Word and scroll down to “Change Conversion Settings”. Click on the Advanced Settings button and change the default page size to 210mm wide and 297mm high and see if that makes any difference!
You should also check the New Document and Convert To PDF settings in the Preferences section of the Edit menu in Adobe Acrobat itself and make the same changes to the page size.
Hope this helps!

Second document when saving as pdf
My computer just started doing something I find really weird. I am not sure if it is a setting in Acrobat or something else. When I use 'Print>Save as pdf' to save a Word file as a pdf, it does that, but now is also producing a second document, with the same file name, but a 2 afterward. That file has all sorts of information about my editing on the original Word file. So the file Abstract Evolinguistics 2.pdf shows this:
Filename: Abstract Evolinguistics.docx
Folder: Macintosh HD:Users:Gerry:Downloads
Template: Macintosh HD:Users:Gerry:Library:Application Support:Microsoft:Office:User
Templates:Normal.dotm

Where is it getting this information, and why is it printing this file? Has anyone seen this before?
I am running Acrobat 9.5.4 in Mac OS 10.7.5With a little more work and thought I found the answer to my own question. This is apparently a result of the preference settings in Word, not Acrobat. In Word Preferences>Print>include_with_document there is a checkbox for document properties that prints an extra page with this information, which is interpreted by Acrobat as a separate file. Apparently a file I received from someone else had that checked and it changed my Word preferences. That in itself I find strange, but that is a problem for a different forum.

Why am I getting an ICC profile error when making a pdf?
I have not see this before but now when I export my document to a high quality PDF, then I get an error message which says that "version 4 ICC profiles were converted to version 2 ICC profiles during pdf export." I have used this same setting for years and have not changed it and just started seeing it this last couple of weeks. What does it mean that the profile must be changed? What is the difference in quality between version 4 and version 2?
Thanks for any help.

Building linkable navigation within an indesign document when exporting to pdf
I'm working in InDesign CS3 and wondering if there is a way to create a linkable navigation in the program when exporting it to pdf. Also, how, if its possible, do I build an html file out of an InDesign document or exported from ID as a pdf?
ID CS3 has an export to crossmedia xml for DreamWeaver option, but you need to edit the result in a html editor like DreamWeaver to clean it up and get a better result. You will never be able to get a page in html that looks exactly the same as in ID though unless you provide a pdf-page for download. You also do not have control of how a pdf on the web is shown for the user in his/her browser as that setting for that is done by the user, not by the page. Some show it on the page, others have pdfs for download (like me).

When making a PDF version, the PDF does not show my footer. What's up with that?
Pulling a single page from a book written in Pages, I copy and drop a single page to andother pages document, then from there I export a PDF of that one page document. When the PDF is viewed, there is no header or footer present. What is up with that? I want the doc to look like the original. THX mc
Pages version? Did you have header and footer on in the new document?
You could try using Print (Cmd + P) > Click PDF button > Save as PDF. It worked fine on Snow Leopard with Pages 08 and also with Pages 09 -
Internal error when making a pdf of a book in FM8
Hello,
I'm currently learning to work with Framemaker 8.
When i wanted to pdf the book that i created, i get the following error message:
Internal error8004, 6343116, 8483344, 0. Framemaker has detected a serious problem and must quit.
A file named .........txt has been generated which contains information that may help frame development improve the product for future releases.
When i press the ok button of this error message, i get a second dialog box saying: The instruction at "0x00c91940" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
After pressing the OK button of this dialog box, Framemaker shuts down completely.
I searched the internet for a solution but could not realy find one. I have tried to make a pdf via the safe as pdf and via print to pdf, but with both i have encountered the same problem.
Anyone has an idea how to solve this error?
The strange thing is that my colleague is able to make a pdf out of this book without encountering any problems and that we are using the same settings.
Thank you very much.
BjornBjorn, usually one post is sufficient... three is overkill.
The next time you post, please confirm that you have a fully patched version of FM 8 -- the third patch was just released this week. It would be useful to know if you're using the bundled version of Acrobat Distiller or a complete version of Acrobat. How much RAM do you have installed, and what operating system are you running?
# That said, a couple things to try and a couple questions: Make sure that you have lots of free space on your hard drive for temp files created during the process.
# Can you print the book's individual component files to the PDF printer?
# Open all the component files in the book before trying to print to the PDF printer.
# Do you have any graphic files that were copied into the files? Not imported by reference?
# In your preferences, is Generate Tagged PDF On or Off? Toggling it sometimes makes a difference.
Cheers,

Inconsistent Conditional Text Settings Message When Making a PDF
I'm working in FM 11 and get a "Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent" error message when printing my book as a PDF. I have two child books in a parent book, so my book structure looks like this:

So I started from scratch: I opened each .fm file separately (not from within the book, but the file itself) and deleted all conditions. Sometimes I had to delete them from the Master Page in order for them to stay deleted. (Not sure why, because those conditions were not on my Master Page, but it was the only way the conditions would stay deleted.) Then I updated each of my child books. The child books print to PDF without errors. I clicked on each child book and selected all files in the book, and no conditions were present. Good.
Then I made a new book and added the front cover, checked the parent book for conditions and there were still none. Good. As I added each child book and finally the back cover, I kept checking the parent book for conditions are there were none.
I then told the parent book to read page numbers from the files, and updated my parent book. That's when I got these conditions:
But as soon as I click on the parent book window again, those conditions go away. I think those conditions have something to do with the TOCs???
Anyway, I then printed to a PDF and I got the Use Conditions error message. When I show conditions for the parent book, nothing shows up, so why am I getting this message?
Thanks for your help. Thanks for your reply, Arnis.
I must be missing something because there are no conditions in either child book or the parent book.
I don't understand why I'm getting the warning when I'm not seeing ANY conditions. -
Text dissapears when making a pdf
Hello,
I have a problem when I make a pdf from a word file. I have a word file with text in a special font. I embed the font when I make the pdf. But when I open the pdf, pieces of text are gone.. All the text is in the same font.
Example:
Word file: I really love Adobe products. They look fantastic.
PDF file : I ------- love Adobe -----------. They look -----------.
- = white space.. there is nothing there..
Really strange.
Can somebody help me?
Thanks,
Rob Vloemans
CheckMarketIf you check the font list you will likely find the font was not embedded. If you turn on the log for Distiller when you run the PDF creation you will likely see that there was an error in the conversion (font not embedded). The problem is likely that you do not have the needed rights (license) for embedding the font.
