Resizing a photo in iPhoto'08 (i.e. ver 7.x.x)

Hi there,
I've a simple question (I hope so):
Since the mothership itself recommend resizing photos to 768x576 (for PAL) before building a slideshow in iDVD'08, is there a possibility to do this in iPhoto while exporting the photo(s)?
I know there are pre-sets for resizing during export: small: 320x240, medium: 640x480, big: 1280x960 and original, of course.
Can anyone tell me where I can change these settings to achive the mentioned settings for iDVD (PAL)? Maybe in the .plist file or so??

Oooops...
sorry, sometimes I seem to be blind, arrrg!
Thank you very much Terence.

is it possible to resize a photo in iPhoto--controlling the maximum dimensions and the dpi?

The dpi depends on the print size you'll be making. This explains it in detail:  The Myth of DPI.
A 300 dpi image for a 4x6 print will have fewer pixels in it than a 300 dpi image for an 8. 10 print.
You can set the pixel dimension of a photo by exporting it via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and use the Custom size setting.  However, you should crop the photo to the size ratio you want before exporting, i.e 4 x 6, 5 x 7, etc.  Then set the maximum pixel size you want for the image:

Are you referring to the size of the file in MB or KB? You can resize usng the file -> export command. Check out the Jpeg Quality setting.

  • How can I resize a photo in iPhoto without cropping it?

I am taking pictures on my iphone 4s and using iphoto to edit them on macbook pro.  I need to upload these photos at a size much smaller than what i am able to take with my phone.  The only way I see to adjust the size of a photo in iphoto is to crop it.  How can I resize without cropping?
    Thank you

It's an option in the Export menu.
File -> Export and under the Size option you can choose the maximum you prefer. Export that and upload from the desktop.

iPhoto - either on your Mac or on IOS devices, is designed as an application with a lossless workflow. All adjustments and edits are guaranteed to be reversible. You will always be able to revert to the original  image. And that would be impossible, if iPhoto allowed you to clandestinely exchange the image file in the place where the photo is stored. iPhoto would not know how to undo the changes you did without using iPhoto to do them. If you do not need a digigal assets management program with a lossless workflow, don't use iPhoto - then you'd be better off with something like Picasa.

  • How do I resize a photo in iPhoto to downsize it

If I can downsize the photos in iPhoto, then I can save a batch of them on the FlashDrive. I don't see a method for downsizing or resizing them.

I am used to using Photoshop to reduce the pixels and image size. Does Iphoto have this option or just large, small etc. If the latter does anybody know what the image size is for small? I need to reduce a series of photos to 120x100 to fit into a website.

  • HT1338 How can I resize my photo in iPhoto?

I need to be able to resize my photos while using iphoto. But if I go to view the selection photo size is not available.

Select Photos under Library left side of the iPhoto window then click Edit from the menu. (bottom of the window)
Select Crop then click and drag the corners to resize then click Done.

Seems like a simple question, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere in the instructions. Not resize it on the screen, just resize it in general.
Or is there other photo editing software on the iMac G5 that will allow me to resize a simple JPEG?

    Hi Kay,
If you are going to use the photo for another application or uploading or sending as an attachment in mail, then you would use the File>export command in the menu bar. In the export window you can input the dimensions.

The Edit menu gives me choices to rotate, enhance, etc. but not resize.  Very fustrating.

What do you mean by "resize"?
On export you can change the dimensions (length by breadth) or the file size.

  • Resizing Photos in iPhoto '08?

    Hello,
I'm new to the iLife suite and cannot figure out how to resize a photo in iPhoto '08. It's not in the editing tools, nor in the pulldown menus. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Kate

    Hi
As I was new on the mac i had the same difficulties. Especially iPhoto made me mad.
Its part of ILife and its still advertised as "Make more out of your photos" (maybe translation is wrong). For ME that slogan meant, you have at least standard editing capabilities. But ... you have not.
iLife as a package is worth the price, but realize that iPhoto is very limited. And look at the other messages around here ... Its often kinda problematic. Backup your photos

can you explain this more fully? since iPhoto does NOT have any capability to edit photo sizes your comment is very confusing - you can export photos in a different size but that only changes them outside of iPhoto - there is no capability of editing sizes within iPhoto

  • How to resize a photo?

    Hello Everybody!
I want to resize a photo (change the number of pixels) while I'm browzing through my pictures in iPhoto.
For that I have two questions:
    1. Is there a way to resize a photo in iPhoto?
    2. If not, how do I set the "Edit in external editor" program when I right click (ctrl-click) a photo? Usually this option is grayed out and I don't know how to make it accessable.
    Cheers & Thanks!

This wasn't the question I was looking for, but it's been one I have wished for. When I export the picture and select the new size I then am given a window where I rename the new image and then direct where it should go. The default appears to be where I LAST saved a picture. I would like it to go where the original image is stored (I'm afraid I am still in my PC mode as I've only very recently decided to give Gates the gate!)
I navigate to my iPhoto library and have a choice of Originals, modified, iPod photo cache (woops, not THERE!), and Data. In each of those folders are only dated folders ... hmmm. I see. Wait a sec. Okay, I dig further into 2002 and discover the folder the original is in. I select that. But it doesn't appear in my iPhoto screen. Lemme see... Well, I see. I put it into "DATA/folder/folder." I'll put it into "Original/folder/folder" ... hmm. It says that it's already there and do I want to replace it. Well, if it were there, why don't I see it in my library?
Okay, now just a sec... bear with me. SOrry to go on here but a lot of this is confusing to an old PC head.

    Last Roll

    Concord Art (folder I made)
then dozens of albums I am currently trying to make from importing 86000 pictures from my PC.
I brought over the entire file structure from the PC onto a folder on my Mac desktop... hmmm. So... maybe I should save the new picture in THAT folder? I'm not sure I'm not COPYING the photo to iPhoto or POINTING iPhoto to that folder.
What was the question I was looking for? That's another of my problems...

  • How do I resize/change resolution of photos from iPhoto when used in iWeb

I am shooting with a 7.1 Mega Pixel Canon to get enough quality to crop and print high quality pictures of my baby daughter and her adventures in the world.
I have a website up made with iWeb, but when I select the photos in iPhoto and go Share / Sent to iWeb / photo page - I get a nice layout of the photos but at full resolution when the thumbnails are selected or the slide show is run. Although nice and sharp, this is a pain for anyone looking at the site even with high speed access.
There must be some way to resize photos, but I have yet to figure that out with iPhoto, let alone iWeb. And as one photo at a time is a pain, there must also be a way to rescale a whole selection of photos that I want to use for a page - say her Disneyworld trip. I can't be the first person to run into this, but I have not found anything out there to point me in the right direction.
Ideally I wold like to create a resized set from the originals - so I can still print and crop in high qulity. I also am not really sure what resolution would be best or easy viewing and download - that's probably subjective. 1200x800 comes to mind but I am open to suggestions.
Perhaps resize is not the right term - changing resolution is probably more accurate, but there too I have not found an answer.
    Appreciate the help and suggestions.

    dan28088,
Tried your site on two different browsers, using highspeed broadband; the site is, indeed, extaordinarily slow. We can dissect the thing down to the last file, but it won't change anything, as far as I can see. If it were me, I would host the site on another server. The .Mac servers are just plain slow, period. I think that is the primary problem here. Just my opinion, others may disagree.
I created a new site this past weekend for a new project, and published it to .Mac. It contains a lot of jpeg files in slideshows (along with the usual png suspects!) . After reviewing it a few times, and not being satisfied with page-load speeds, I published to a folder and uploaded the site to space on 1&1 WebHosting.
The page-load speeds TRIPLED. That's right...3X as fast page-load speeds. Even large, linked to files, 3MB+, load within a reasonable amount of time. (seconds)
I still will keep a .Mac subscription, as I like and use all of the other features of the iDisk. But for serious website hosting, I think you will be better 'served' with a remote host. Your money with .Mac is certainly not wasted; the syncing services and other features of iDisk space that integrate with your local files are well worth the yearly fee. Again, only one user's opinion, based on experience.

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

  • How to resize photos in iPhoto?

    Hi
I can seem to figure out how to resize my photos so I can send them via email or just make them smaller in general. Any suggestions?

What is your email client? If you use Mail, Eudora, Entourage or AOL then just select the photo you want to email and click on the Mail button. You'll be presented with a menu to choose the size of the file to attach to the email.
If you are using a web based email you'll have to export the files to the Desktop via the File->Export->File Export menu option where you'll be able to set the file size and quality level of the files.
See TD's treatis on file access on ways to access the photos for use outside of iPhoto.

    Hello,
I've been doing this in Photoshop for a long while now, but am curious as to how to resize photos using iPhoto 6. I don't seen an obvious way to do this, but I'm probably just missing it. What I want to do is take an image at 2816x2112 and resize it to 800x600, without cropping. How do you do this in iPhoto 6?

found the answer by doing a little more searching in the forums!
