Resizing a photograph

This is something that I've been able to do without a problem in the past and now something has happened where it no longer works.  When I insert a picture either into a new blank file or onto another picture and then click on the new picture to resize, it appears that the tool sees only the original document and not the photograph that I've just dragged onto it.  It does not show the dotted line selection or the resize handles.  Also when I try to use the resize menu option in either canvas or image option it changes the whole document and not the new photograph.

Check the prefs. You have turned off importing/ pasting as smart objects.

  • Resizing a photograph for print (aspect ratio)

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me with something that seems like it should be very simple, but I can't seem to figure out.
When I import my pictures from my DSLR into Bridge and then open in Photoshop the image size is varies, but typical size is 16"x22" and I want to be able to print the full image as an 8"x10" without cropping or loosing any parts of the image.  Is there a way to do this?  When I try to simply decrease the image size, the measurements never come out to 8"x10", sometimes it actually gets larger and not smaller.  I have even tried resizing the canvas and that makes it worse.
Ideally once I get this figured out i would like to try to make it an action so that I can prepare multiple photographs at the same time.
    Thanks :-)

    Increase the ppi.
    Use this formula:
    inches X ppi = pixels
Knowning any two of the above values will give you the third.
    So 1200 px / 300 ppi = 4"
    1200 px / 72 ppi = 16.66"
Luckily Photoshop will do the work for you.
Image>Image Size  Unselecting the box for resampling will fix the pixels so they do not change therefore no adding or subtracting pixels.
By editing the physical size the ppi will change - editing the ppi will change the physical size. Try it out, you will see they are tied together, one goes up the other must go down.

  • Resize a photograph

In iPhoto you could resize a photo with default sizes or a custom size.
How can I resize a photo now?
    Thanks, George UK

I don't see any resize tools at the Crop screen. I see Aspect, Flip, Auto and Reset. I also tried resizing on Export but the only options I get are Max Width OR height, no place to enter exact dimensions.

  • Resizing photographs for use on a website

I am designing a website which will have several photographs on it. I need to resize the photographs (from the digital original)so that they do not lose clarity on the site. Basically before I import them to the site I need to make them smaller. If I import them then adjust the size they lose clarity.
As I have a copy of Photoshop Elements 4 I thought I should be able to use this. However I have never used the programme and don't know where to begin. I have tried the help section but could not find the relevant topic.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
    Thanks

There are two things you need to do: (1) change the pixel dimensions of the image to match the space you have on the web page; (2) compress the image so that it loads quickly when the page is accessed.
To do the first, use the Image Size dialog -- depending on how PE4 is laid out, it is probably under Image on the main menu bar. Make sure that 'Resample Image' and 'Constrain Proportions' are checked, then enter your desired dimensions in the height and width boxes.
To do the second, use Save for Web under the File menu item. Pick JPG as your output format and use the drop down or Quality slider to adjust the file size to what you want -- the preview will allow you to judge quality. Smaller file sizes load faster.
Note that both these procedures will affect your image quality -- if you are changing the dimensions or compressing you will always lose some of the detail of the original. You have control of how much.

  • Can I change the rollover state of a placed photograph?

I simply want to be able to have a series of separate single, small photographs with descriptions below them and when someone moves their mouse over the photograph I would like it to display a larger version of that photograph on the same screen.  Then, when they move their mouse away, the larger version of the photograph disappears.
I thought it would be configured in the rollover state of the image, but I must be doing something wrong.  I have placed and resized a photograph on my site.  I placed it, then resized it to basically a 1.5" w x 2.25" h.  I have tried to change to the rollover state for the image and then hyperlink to a larger size of that image but it seems to hyperlink all of the states.  And, if previewed, the mouse pointer becomes a hand, and when you click on the image it opens a new tab and displays the image there -- eventhough the box is not checked to open link in new tab.
Help! Is there a way to accomplish this?

Ok I did this on my site for one of my clients.
What you do is set a lightbox composite. Enable the thumbnails and on the options set the events to rollover.
Resize your thumbnails to desired size.
Hide the enlarged picture of the light box. Now when you hover over iton preview on muse you should get the effect. Make sure to just have the hero image of the lightbox image no fill that would normally happen when you select the image and your window would dim out.
Hopefully that helps you if not ill be on tomorrow and will post my finished site so you can see the effect and verify if its what you asked for.
    Good Luck!

  • Photoshop 12 Resized Image

I recently bought Photoshop 12, having previously had Photoshop 9.  With Photoshop 9 I could resize a photograph to 60mm by 40mm (say) and insert it into a text in Windows 7 at exactly that size and textwrap it.  When I try to do this using Photoshop 12, the image fills the A4 page, even though it confirms that the resized photograph is 60mm by 40mm.  What am I doing wrong?

I think what you have is Photoshop Elements 12 rather than Photoshop.  Try this forum http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements

  • Resizing inconsistency

Two years ago I resized many photographs to 125 pixels wide for a website.  The results were nice and clear with an image file size of only about 5 kb.
Now, I’m trying to add new photos to the website. When I resize to the same 125 pixels wide (using bicubic sampling; 180 pixels per inch resultion) and go to save the image, I get a range of image quality options (low to max) of about 10 kb to 20 kb (5kb isn’t even available).  The image quality at 10kb is poorer than the older 5 kb images and only the 20kb is about the same.
I can’t figure out why I need to have much larger files now to get reasonable quality than I did in the past.  Below is the old 5kb image followed by the new 10 kb image.

Are you using File>Save As or File>Save For Web?
If you use save for web, you can play around with the settings or use
Optimize to File Size and enter 5 in the dialog.
One thing you should be aware of is that resolution for images displayed on the web
doesn't matter, only the pixel dimensions. So when you use the image size dialog, just
set the pixel dimensions and leave the resolution to whatever it is.

  • The reason photos need to be able to go back to the iPhone in original size

I have been looking around to try and find a way to get photos that have been pulled from the iPhone then resynced up to the iPhone to retain their original size, but it appears that there's no workaround for this. That is a very big problem for me. I'm an iPhone photographer and I've taken nearly 4000 photos on my phone. Every week or two I'll resync up my phone to the PC, dump the images to the PC then re-sync them up to the phone organized into folders by date. So far so good.
The problem comes when I need to go back and re-edit some of those photographs. I no longer have access to the original sized images on my phone, and my photography work requires that all editing is done exclusively on the iPhone, but I need to maintain the maximum possible resolution on those images. Unfortunately once I sync the photos, I can no longer go back and re-edit them in their full resolution. I'm forced to deal with small images now that do not meet my resolution requirements.
I can understand resizing the images to a size that's more practical for display on the iPhone since under normal circumstances there's no reason to have a 1600x1200 image on a phone that can only display 480x320. But this is really a serious issue for me as I don't have them on there simply for viewing, but I have them there for editing and manipulating. With the advent of the App Store, and all the Photography apps that are on the market, the iPhone is actually a very powerful tool for artistic expression and to have it forceably limited to a low-resolution import really is absurd.
This may not be an issue for the majority of iPhone users, but for me it is critical. The resizing of photographs needs to be an OPTION, not a REQUIREMENT so that people like me can utilize the iPhone to its maximum potential. This limitation takes it, in my view, from being a serious tool, to a casual toy.
My only other option is to not sync the photos up to the PC (aside from simply copying them over as a backup and leaving them on the phone) and have an un-organized camera roll of 3-4000 photos. This simply isn't very practical.
Thank you, and I'd like to hear your comments on this. (Actually, I'd like to see Apple fix this in their next update...)

I thought that originally too, but that's all changed with the pool of apps that are out there now. So now what I'm trying to do is to prove that technology is progressing to the point where a tiny, handheld phone can produce images that are nearly as good as photos taken with much more expensive and bulky equipment. I've got my share of expensive bulky camera equipment, but I'm finding that I'm having much more enjoyment out of using my iPhone from initial capture, to editing, to publishing, and achieving results that are nearly as good.
I do think you're working under a bit of a handicap. For example, lens quality. Here's an iPhone photo example of some wild turkeys in the neighborhood masked by flare that would be much better controlled on an SLR lens (click to enlarge - the flare is obvious, the turkeys are not):
At the same time, working under a handicap can definitely spur creativity, similar to the oft-cited example of swapping out your zoom lens for a prime to force yourself to pay attention to composition.
It's an interesting concept - I wish you luck!

  • Can adjust page elements in MX, but not in CS3

I don't know what to call this problem, so couldn't do a
search on this forum. I have two computers, one of which runs
Dreamweaver MX, the other of which runs CS3. I can access different
elements of a particular set of web pages in MX, for example
resizing a photograph. But in CS3 all the page elements within the
"contents" div tag highlight as one single element, so that, for
example, if I try to delete a single word of text, the entire
contents--pictures, text, etc.--gets deleted instead. I made these
pages in MX. I'm guessing that there is some default setting in CS3
that is preventing me from accessing the individual content
elements. Here is a sample page:

Can someone help me out? Thanks in advance.

    > for example resizing a photograph
Never resize a photo or any image from within DW. Load the
    image in your
image editor and resize it there. If you do it in DW you
    aren't actually
changing the size, merely squeezing or stretching it thereby
    diminishing its
quality. And if you reduce the size (in DW) you have a
    visually smaller
image but the pixel size (weight) doesn't reduce.

  • Can I put my money on Motion for Glitch-Free Pans and Zooms?

    Hello all
I'm an experienced FCE user, who is tired of the unreliabilty of keyframe for producing good smooth pans and stills.
iMovie, Photo to Movie, I tried em all ....
Do I have equipment related issues? (absolutely not)
Cutting right to the quick, I'd like to find a motion editor that will handle whatever file resolution I throw at it, and give me reasonable results without the unwanted Anti-aliasing glistening appearance, and jaggedness of a pan or zoom that keyframe and iMovie produce.
Within reason of course, but I'm frustrated at having to worry about calculating, and resizing a photograph just to have it behave smoothly as a pan or zoom is applied.
Have you guys had good results with Motion in working with stills? Specifically photographs (tiff and jpg files)
    Thank you

    Hi Patrick
    Thanx for your reply
Well I just purchased, (and still testing), 'Lyric Media Pan Zoom Pro'
First indications by it's initial usage, seems to be good news because it would seem that varying pixel sized images (even very large ones), are being rendered and processed WITHOUT the typical Jagged edges of iMovie, or the unstable movement from keyframe.
The nice thing about it, is that it's a 'FC Plug In' and it was only $49
I do realize that there's a slight (very slight), loss of crispness, but this is probably done as a benefit so that the image will move very smoothly, with no 'aliasing' - So far so good.
    Here it is:
    http://www.lyric.com/fcp-plugins/panzoompro/pzp.htm
By the way, if I were to get Motion, I'd pick up older version 2 as a stand alone
(I know where to find them - legit)
    Patrick you say:
"my graphics card limits me to a 2048x2048 size graphic"
Well, I'm not sure what you mean by this? Are you basing this on my system specifications? My ATI 9800 Pro? This 256MB card was a big improvement from the stock 64MB card.
I'm convinced that all the still image glitches that I'm dealing with are because of the very nature of the iMovie's engine (as read and confirmed here), and by the very nature of 'keyframing's shortcomings'
Looks like I'll work with Lyric Pan & Zoom, and see how it goes ....
    Thanx
    Mike

  • Adding new wallpapers to Mountain Lion

I've been in the process of resizing some photographs I've taken into the screen resolution for the 27 inch iMac, and also I've been downloading some too from various wallpaper websites.
When I get my iMac, I am wanting to add these wallpapers into the same folder/location that that pre installed wallpapers are stored so that all my wallpapers are in this one location.

    Yes. That's correct.
If you are using an admin user it will be asked for the password only. Otherwise if you are using a standard user, you must provide both an admin username and its password.
But as others suggested, it is better to keep a wallpapers' dedidicated folder inside your user folder.
Thanks very much for the help Alberto its much appreciated.
I would be setting up only one account on the iMac, and this would be an Admin account/user. Myself and my girlfriend would just share this one account, which is what we've done for years on our current Windows PC.
I agree, it is going to be easier to have a dedicated folder for placing my own wallpapers, like what sbriss suggested earlier. I can give this folder a descriptive name such as Custom Wallpapers, so that it would be easy to find. Thanks again for the help everyone, its been much appreciated

  • JPGs not displayed in Properties

In the RoboHelp Project Manager (version 7.01.001), you can
double-click on an Image (or right-click and select Properties). If
the image is a BMP a preview will be displayed; if it is a PNG you
see the message "File format not supported". So far so good.
But some JPGs display OK, some give the message. A quick
check suggests that it is the presence of camera properties in the
JPG; depending on the tool used to crop and/or resize a photograph,
the camera properties may be removed or retained, and RoboHelp
seems to be unable to handle those JPGs with camera properties.
Has anyone else seen this? is it known to Adobe?

The problem seems to be related to the EXIF data, used by
digital cameras to record aperture, exposure and so on. Robohelp's
preview in Image Properties, General tab, will not display JPG
    files with EXIF data.
Adobe have been notified but we do not know when a fix will
    be available.
Some image manipulation programs pass the EXIF data through
untouched; some (older ones) may remove or corrupt the data.
Microsoft Photo Editor (part of Office 2000) removes EXIF, Paint
(part of Windows) passes EXIF data through, but if there is no EXIF
entry Paint adds a small one.
This means that if you use Paint on JPEG images for Robohelp
you will lose the preview facility. Also if you use any modern
image manipulation program on photos from a digital camera you will
    probably have no preview.
There are tools which remove EXIF data; I did a quick test
with PureJPEG from yafla.com and results were encouraging. But I
don't intend to use freeware on a live project without further
testing. Does anyone out there have recommendations for safely
    removing EXIF data?
