Resizing a RAW Smart Object in a PSD

So I Have a PSD file with one pixel bearing layer that is a Smart Object of a Canon 5D2 RAW file.  the rest of the PSD consists of adjustment layers with masks.
I ended up resizing the image to about 2000px wide and accidently clicked the "save" button when i was exiting Photoshop CC without undoing the resize.  Thus i now have a PSD file that is of lesser pixel quality than i want.
But... the RAW file in the Smart Object is still the same full size RAW file. If i where to resize the PSD back to the size of the RAW file would it resample that layer or would it just resample the Masks on the Adjustment Layers?
Id like to find a way back to before the untimely save on exit.
thanks!
-Tyler

It would just resample the masks in the adjustment layers.  Your Smart Object will have no problem being sized back up.

  • Camera Raw / smart object ?

    Using CS3 / CR / Bridge
    Scenario:
I've shot 500 wedding images, sorted & edited them in Bridge. Now I'll look at each one in camera raw (in Bridge) and make any needed adjustments. I use CR and adjust / sync as many similar files as I can; zipping thru the 500 images quickly and save without opening, then in Bridge > Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor, I use the image processor to process all the 500 images (while I sleep), and save as tiff or psd. I set the CR options to process as a Smart Object. But the files don't process a SO.
    Question:
Is there a way to process /batch process the 500 images and  have them saved so later when I open them, they open as smart objects. I only fine tune the client "Picks" as they don't order all the 500 images shot. Now if I want to alter the color balance, exposure, etc., I can double click the smart object, go back into camera raw and make any adjustments/ refinements, click OK and it updates the file. This mantain's a higher integrity of the file.
In CR I know I can check the box "open as a smart object", but that only seems to apply if I immediately open the file (or files) and then save them. It is not practical or feasible to select 500 files, open and save them at one time. If I save the Raw file(s) to open later, (as in my above workflow) then it will not open as a smart object.
Another way to ask this question:
Why can't I use the Image Processor in Bridge / CR to process my 500 CR files as Smart Objects?
When in CR I can set the options to process as a SO, but that only will process the open file(s) in CR as SO. Not practical to process 500 files.
I checked on the Adobe Exchange but did not find any scripts or actions that would facilitate this.
Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible and how?
    Thanks,
    JeffN

Any thoughts, suggestions, or can this not be done.
I'm pretty sure it's a bug....when recording the action in CS5, if you change the Workflow Options to open as a Smart Object, ALL the settings are hardcoded into the recorded Open action step. This is wrong...if you open an image and change the Workflow OPtions but DON'T try to open as a Smart Object, the Open action is recorded correctly–only the Workflow Options are recorded and when processed the files properly retain their individual original settings. So, the act of changing the Workflow Options to make a Smart Object is incorrectly hard coding the settings in.

    Hi Chris,
I need a vector smart logo that is on a PSD layer as a vector file in illustrator so I can plot cut on a vinyl cutter. How can I make sure the logo transfers as .ai at the exact size showen in the Photoshop document? I remember doiing this a few years ago but forgot the proceedure. It's probably a very easy step and once I have the answer I'll say "oh that's right I remember now" The export path to Ilustrator only gives me the saved paths in this document.

  • Linked Smart Object breaks a PSD after sync with Creative Cloud

After using a linked Smart Object inside a PSD and sync with Creative Cloud, the online version of file does not preview and does not work with any online feature, like Extract, Layers, or Anything else.
    Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the example Deryck,
The preview seemed broken on the comments tab but the image was appearing for me under the Extract one. When I downloaded the original it looked like the linking was preserved. The online version didn't seem to denote in any way that the Cecinas layer contained a Linked Smart Object, which might be helpful, but it did have the preview. Here are some screenshots of what I was seeing. Thanks for posting about it. I'll pass it on to our engineering department.

  • Is there a way to read/write original .xmp settings of a CR2 loaded as smart object onto a .psd layer?

Hello all. This has been asked in varying degrees before, but many of the discussions I found relative to my question are from the period 2010 to 2013. Thought I would throw this out there again medio 2014 to see if anything new has developed that I'm somehow missing.
    Here's the situation:
    1. In the filesystem, a CR2 file and a sidecar .xmp file with ACR settings applied via Bridge (CS6).
    2. CR2 file is opened in Photoshop (CS6) as a smart object (.xmp sidecar settings are applied in the process).
    3. CR2 file and .xmp now exist on a .psd layer as a smart object...in some unknown form.
    4. File is saved as .psd
    My question is this:
Is there ANY way at all via Bridge and/or Photoshop scripting to read/write/access/touch/poke/prod the original ACR "development" settings, originally stored in the .xmp sidecar file, that apparently now exist in some form on the smart object layer in the .psd? Via scripting in Bridge, one can alter the metadata on this saved .psd file, no problem, but this is not the same .xmp data that is being referenced by the image loaded as a smart object onto the .psd layer in that file. Where is this second set of data? Can it be accessed?
Any info, enlightenment would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    No, not too late.
InDesign is for layout for press in this case.
Photoshop is for design, which is using the .jpg's.
I'm half way there, but stuck at:
Getting a file location reference when the .jpg is first brought into PS as a layer.
Getting a script to write the location of the file into the medata for the PSD in some field
Reading back the metadata file location for the .jpg and bringing it back into the PSD again.
Any help would really be appreciated.
I can make the completed script(s) available when its complete, as this has possibilities for other uses, batch process, and more.

  • Extracting an .xmp sidecar from an ACR-edited RAW smart object layer...

Hello all.  Given the following situation:
Several thousand TIFF files, each containing two RAW files embedded into separate Smart Object layers.  The RAW files were named with sequential numbers prior to being composited into the TIFF files via a script, and the TIFF filenames correspond to those of the embedded RAW files.  The RAWs have subsequently been edited in ACR from within the TIFF files.
I've done a little digging, but I can't seem to turn up answers to several related questions:
    A) Should I wish to re-extract the RAW files from the smart object layers with the edits that have been applied, is there a method of PerLayerMetdata that can be used to extract a complete .xmp sidecar that will be recognized by ACR and associated with the exported RAW?
    B) Should I wish to change the sequential-naming of the parent TIFF files, is there any method to correspondingly change the filenames of the embedded RAWs directly within the smart object layer?  In other words, using PerLayerMetdata, can the filenames of the RAWs be changed without exporting the RAWs using a different filename and then replacing the contents of the smart object layer?
    C) I would ultimately like to be able to save the embedded RAWs as DNGs with their ACR edits applied, if necessaray.  Given a way to accomplish A), above, it would be a fairly simple to export the RAWs and associated .xmp files and then run the DNG converter on the lot.  However, does anyone know of a way to save a DNG directly from the smart object layer?
Any ideas or pointers to existing documentation are much appreciated.

Thank you kindly, Michael.  I see now that the example I was viewing had done exactly what you describe, writing ACR settings into the SO layer's metadata at the time of embedding.  I was only looking at the portion which later accessed those settings using PerLayerMetadata, and I had mistakenly assumed that CS5 was automatically embedding xmp data in this manner, now, when opening or placing a RAW file as a SO.
I don't see a direct way to get at the ACR settings of a camera raw file embedded in a smart object.
This is sort of what I was afraid of.  They're in there, somewhere, but I'm having no luck figuring out how to access them.
If the ACR settings for a RAW smart object are, indeed, not exposed to automation in some manner, I think I must change my workflow such that either: A) No edits are performed in ACR after object embedding; or B) the RAWs are converted to DNGs prior to smart-object embedding so that the ACR settings can be exposed in the exported file.

  • CS5 transform camera raw smart object with mask funniness?

When I try and trasform a camera raw smart object that has a layer mask, the trasform box is not the size of the image, but is about a quarter of the image and it moves up to the upper left quarter of the image. If I first rasterize the smart object then add a mask it transforms just fine. Or if I rasterize the camera raw smart object, then make it a smart object and add a layer mask it transforms normally. So it appears to be an issue with transforming a camera raw smart object with a layer mask that is the issue. Is this a bug?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I can't post the image publicly because of NDA, but I will pm you a link to the file. I don't always have this issue in cs5. I even tried opening up the same file in a new document and then made a mask and it transformed just fine. But it also is not limited to just this file, I have had this happen with other images as well.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Resizing a circular smart object in CS6 results in flat sides

Resizing a circular smart object in CS6 results in flat sides, whereas in CS5 the sides would remain rounded.
Both the images below were resized using Free Transform (Apple+T) and typing in a height of 88px for the dimensions of the circle.  The dropshadow is a layer effect and the background is a solid colour.
This might not seem like a big deal to some people but for me it would mean I'd have to change my workflow and figure out a method of resizing to avoid the flat eges.

  • Illustrator Application Window Resizes When Opening Smart Object from PSD

Hi All, I've taken a vector graphic created in AI CS4 and pasted it into my PSD CS4 doc as a smart object. When the original AI file was created the application window was set as I preferred it, filling my screen. When I double click the Smart Object in PSD to edit it back in Illy, the window that contains the application has been switched off of the fill screen mode and is quite a bit smaller. I know it's small but now I have to click the maximize icon in the application bar to get Illy to fill the screen again. It wouldn't be so bad once, but the application window resizes itself every time I punch back into the smart object from PSD.
Any ideas on how I can get the AI environment from switching around on its own??
Win 7, CS4, all patches current, Dual 22" montiors
    thnx,
    jeff

I just want to point out that when you open the smart object of course it is not the same file as the original but an embedded copy of it.
That might also have something to do with this issue and might also be a photoshop issue with the smart object and one reason might be that Photoshop is see the image as resolution and Illustrator sees it as a dimension and the teams might be able to do something about this but might not actually be aware of it unless you file a report even if it is not a bug it would then be a feature request.
They might not be able to do anything about it but then there might be a clever engineer with an idea, so it might be worth the report.

  • Bug? Camera Raw Smart Object Can't Be Edited

I have a problem where a raw file placed as a smart object can't be re-edited in CS3. Here's how to replicate the problem:
    1. Open a JPEG or TIFF as a Smart Object (may happen with other file types).
    2. Go to Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart Object via Copy.
    3. Double-click the top smart object and make changes in Adobe Camera Raw.
You should now be able to hide/show the top layer (the final)
to see the bottom layer (the original.)
    4. Double-click the top smart object layer to see that it properly opens Camera Raw allowing you to make edits (this works for now but will stop working when we encounter the bug in a moment).
    5. Save the file and close it.
    6. Re-open the file and double-click either of the smart object layers to edit them. Instead of Camera Raw dialog opening, the image in the window changes to the original unedited version. This is a bug and doesn't happen on every image, but it always happens on at least some of my images.
There have been times when it works, but the next time I open the file it stops working. Some of my files allow editing later without problems. Truly weird. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a workaround?
I have applied all updaters, so that means I am using Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 with Camera 4.4.1 on Mac OS 10.5.2. I have also trashed preferences for Photoshop and Adobe Bridge. I've also Purged the Adobe Camera Raw Cache in the Bridge. This happens on both my Mac Pro (3GB RAM) and MacBook Pro (4GB RAM) so it's not just one machine.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

    Hi Daniel,
Stumbled on your post while searching on a similar issue. I'm not sure if I precisely understand yuour problem, but here's my experience when dealing with TIFFs and JPEGs embedded as Smart Objects in CS3...
If the Smart Object layer contains a TIFF or JPEG that has already been edited and saved in Camera Raw (i.e., the embedded file has Camera Raw XMP metadata in its header), then Photoshop will open the Smart Object's contents in Camera Raw... with one provision. You have to make sure that in your Camera Raw preferences, under "JPEG and TIFF Handling", that both boxes are checked for "Always open JPEG/TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw".
If those boxes aren't checked, when you try to edit the contents of a Smart Object layer containing a TIFF or JPEG with Camera Raw settings in its header, instead of opening the embedded file for editing, Photoshop seems to simply revert to displaying the layer without the settings applied. I'm unsure whether this is a bug or intended behavior, but it seems to be one of the symptoms you describe.
On the other hand, if you make a Smart Object layer from a JPEG or TIFF that does not already have Camera Raw settings in its header, Photoshop CS3 will never open that layer's contents in Camera Raw, regardless of what preferences you have checked. Instead, the contents are opened in a separate window as a temporary .psb file. The only way I've found to do Camera Raw editing in these cases is to export the layer, edit the exported file in Raw, and then re-import it via Replace Contents.

  • How do i open my multiple smart objects in my psd in one illustrator vector file?

    HELLO
    I have created a psd.
It contains multiple smart objects which when double clicked link you to illustrator.
I would like to open all the vector images from this file in one illustrator file.
    Is this possible?

I guess it might be (almost) possible with Scripting in principle but probably not practically.
    To elaborate:
One could open all the Smart Objects with a Script and with BridgeTalk it should be possible to have Illustrator perform tasks on those.
But one can not, as far as I know, directly access scale, rotation, skew of a placed Smart Object with a Script, so that information would have to be determined with work-arounds or (partially) neglected.
If you need vector output why did you make the arrangement in Photoshop?

  • Smart Object Sampling Technique.

Hope I named this topic aptly. I'm pretty new to the whole up/downsampling technique thing. In years of web design, I just never had any real need of it.
However, I ran into the following scenario:
We have a big PS file full of pixel art & photographs, some of both are smart objects. We'd like to resize a bunch of them, but need bicubic for some, nearest-neighbor for others.
Is there any way to set sampling techniques for each smart object?
(If not, where does one post feature requests? ;D)
    Cheers!

First you need to know th all smart objects are not created equal.  An embedded smart object is a copy of something "Photoshop" can be just about anything Photoshop supports.  A Raw with Raw settings,  A PSD file, A Layer, A layer set etc. Smart Objects can resized two ways.
The first way is the re adjust the transform associated with the Smart Object Layer (Ctrl/Command+T).  Transform I believe uses your user id Photoshop preference for interpolation. When a smart object is resized this way Photoshop first renders the pixels for the smart object the resize those pixels like a raster layer using your default interpolation method. Even if the embedded smart object is a vector or text graphic. I guess you could set your Photoshop preference interpolation before doing each transform.
The second way to resize a smart object is by editing it in Photoshop and use Photoshop Tools.  You do this be double clicking on the smart object icon in the smart object layer in the layers palette. When you do this Photoshop or ACR will open the embedded smart object in Photoshop as a temp work document in ACR the raw file with its current ACR settings applied.   Use the tools approbate to resize.  For example if the embedded smart object was a PSD file use menu Image>Image Size. Check resample the size and interpolation.  Text and Vector layers will be resized using vector graphics or change font size raster layers will be resized using the method you set. When you commit the resize In ACR or use menu File>Save in Photoshop the embedded object in the smart object layer doubled clicked on will be update with the changes you made.

  • Smart Objects saving in Dumb Place?

Is there any way to tell Photoshop to save smart objects in the same directory as the parent file?
Is there any way to tell Photoshop to save smart objects as a .PSD rather than .PSB?

    Yes, thank you Warunicorn.
The question is about smart objects created in a document. Similar to precomping a series of layers in After Effects, where you select some layers, merge them into one sequence and then double click that sequence to edit it directly.
If you follow this workflow in Photoshop, (select layers>convert to smart object) it creates a file that is hidden in the temp and saves it as a .psb. If I wanted to share this document with others, I'd probably want to save as>.psd to some relevant location. Doing this makes a copy which is not linked to the original document.
Maybe there is a better way to do this, but in my professional design setting, our team starts with a large artboard of images- we then puts these images into folders (layer folders), we apply adjustments, write notes and eventually turn several layers into neatly organized smart objects. The smart objects become their own documents for members of the team to work on, and the changes are thus propagated up the line to the original 'parent' artboard... As it stands now, I can either relink the smart objects to documents that have been saved to relevant locations/file types or replace them entirely with link/embed.
Why save these files to temp? Why not save them to the same directory as the parent as a .psd?

  • Smart objects generate huge ( 10 GB) temp files ??

Hi folks. I think there's a bug in CS3's smart object handling. Everytime I move (not resize!) a smart object, the temp file's size increases by some 100-200 MB. I easily get over 10 GB just by moving around a single object repeatedly.
I find that quite weird, given that normal layer moving does not significantly alter the temp file's size. And PS only has to store the smart objects new X and Y coordinates as the object itself does not change. Am I missing something ? Anybody knows what's going on ?

Converting Smart objects back to embedded layers would be a very useful addition. "Return to layers" would be a good term for it.
If you are looking for real world examples where this would be useful Chris
to simplify and bring down the file size of a file that has got out of hand with smart Objects. Some sort of global command "embed all Smart objects" in the layer/smart objects menu would also be useful for this purpose.
Objects of the same res and profile could then be non-destructively edited by swapping them in and out of smart objects for direct editing within the master document.
would be particularly useful when for example you need to detach a single instance of a duplicated SO from the others.
There is sometimes a need to return layers, and adjustments back into the master document to directly modify how they interact with their surroundings in terms of color and masking - for compositing. Its useful for simplicity to have them tucked away as SO's still
Of course data loss due to resampling, bit depth and modes could be greeted with a warning, perhaps the warning could be contextual "this operation will result in data loss, will decrease file size by 75%, change its mode from LAB, and resample the embedded pixels to 120%".
What happens to the smart-filters? if they are there, a choice either to rasterise them or abandon them

  • Using Smart objects between documents

I know how to make smart objects within a single document, but Is it possible to use Smart objects between separate psd files?
I would like to create a master background file and have any changes made to this updated throughout all the other psd documents that contain this.
I cant find any info on this...Can it be done?
    thanks
    Jeff

No a smart object layer contains a copy of the original in the layer.  If you then change the orignal the copy in the smart object layer is not updated and if you change the copy in the smart object layer the original is not changed. Smart Object are independant from the original.  It is posible to have multipal smart object layers that contain the same smart object in a single document. You can change the single smart object from any of the layers that its in.  You can also have independant smart object layers of the same image. That the difference between dupeing a smart object layer and using menu layers>smart objects>new smart object via copy.
