Resizing a video file recorded with quicktime

Hi
I have recorded my screen with Quicktime for 2 hours and the file went upto 12 GB. I want to resize that file as it is a waste to keep the file with that size. Can anyone help me in resizing the file.

If only part of the screen is of issue then use MPEG Streamclip (free) , set the export (to MPEG-4 and select an iTunes preset like iPod or iPhone) to the same size as your screen (1900 X1200 etc.), then use crop, which is a bit of a hit or miss proposition to crop left, right, top, bottom to save and export just the part you want to see.
There is an export preview in Streamclip so you can see in seconds what you are going to get and estimating the cropping points is not that hard, as you know how big the screen is and if you want 1/3 in the middle you set left and right crop to be 1/3 of the width each.
Note the end result is scaled down to the crop settings so it is not 1900X1200 using this example, it might be 600X400 etc. Just the part you want, life size.

  • Video files exported with QuickTime Pro 7.2 can't be transferred to iPod

If I use the default Export to iPod export choice in QuickTime Pro 7.2 to export video files and add them to my iTunes 7.3 library, when I try to sync them to my 5th generation iPod with video (November, 2005), I just get the "can't be played on this iPod" message. I can create, transfer, and play video files on my iPod if I create them a different way (by using iSquint, ffmpegX, or No Frills DVD2iPod, for example). Exporting to mpeg4 using h.264 results in the same problem, even though I've used settings I know worked before. The export to iPod export choice does not offer any customization of settings. Although this problem is new, I can't be sure the immediately previous version of QuickTime Pro didn't also have the problem, but I know I have successfully used QuickTime 7 to create videos that could be transferred and played on my iPod in the past. How can I use QuickTime Pro 7.2 to create video files that will be compatible with my iPod? Thanks.
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I can also verify this (QT Pro 7.2 exporting to .mp4 not compatible
with video iPod [firmware 1.2.1 on both 5G/5.5G units]).
This results in the unusual situation where custom H.264 output
is operable on the iPhone but not the iPod.
    Example: your iPhone should play
    http://homepage.mac.com/retiarius/sample.elements.mp4
but it won't transfer to a video iPod.
Yes, the workaround is to 'export for iPod' or do the conversion
within 'iTunes', but this in many circumstances will generate
    larger files.
The closest description of this situation is:
    http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/ffmpeg-devel/2006-September/015930.html
Perhaps Apple will release a video iPod firmware update soon
to get the 'uuid' atoms and whatever watermarking they are
    using these days straightened out.
I'm surprised this hasn't been noticed more by video podcasters
who dutifully use Apple's own QT Pro encoding tool to optimize
filesizes via the tunable H.264/.mp4 codec settings.

  • What size is a video file recorded with ipod touch 4g

just would like to know about what size would a one minute video recorded with the touch be, the same for a picture taken with it.  so i have an idea of which size ipod i should get.  of course, i'd like the 64gb, but right now i have a 32gb 1st gen touch loaded with 650 songs, 10 movies, photos and apps. it still has 18gb available.

Thanks, it would be safe to guess that a picture wouldn't be more than 3 MB.  So, I would think that for what I'll be using an iPod, another 32gb should be enough as long as I download the files to a computer periodically.

  • No sound in .mpg files, or video files associated with Quicktime...

Im having trouble getting sound in any of the videos I play in iTunes or Quicktime. It happened when I had my last software update I think, but it also effects any movie and most audio files in my web browsers. Any ideas on how to get my sound back? thanks!

found another thread in the quicktime forum that answered my problem, yes!

  • Problem viewing videos I recorded with the phone

When trying to view videos I recorded with the phone, It gives me a message saying it is impossible to view this multimedia file format!
It has been recorded with the phone and it can't watch it on the phone!? It doesn't recognize its own recording format
    Help please

If the format is in 3GP you can view it with a player called VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), or can try a video conversion program to convert it into a format your computer can read. Once such program can be found here http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx

I have an old mpg video file, taken with a very early model "smart phone", that opens and plays fine in my newly "rebuilt" iPhoto library. I cannot open, edit it or share it with any other software. How can I fix it, to be able to do anything with it?
    Detail:
I've recently purchaced a 4TB Thunderbolt drive to store my "vast" music and photo libraries. iPhoto had an issue reading the moved library, so I bought and used iPhoto Library Manager to "rebuild" it. Apart from much of the original data such as date taken & camera used etc, it appears to be working well. The aforementioned mpg video was taken some 9 years ago, using an early model "iMate" smart phone, and opens and plays fine on iPhoto, but I cannot open it with anything else, (I've tried iMovie, VLC players, Wondershare and Handbrake) nor can I share it. I just want to edit it, and share it with family.
    Any help would be appreciated...

No - not iMovie, VLC, Wondershare or Handbrake... Quick time starts with a "CONVERTING", then I get
I've looked at the "tell me more" links, tried downloading some of the movie players there. I'm begining to think the file is corrupt.
Thanks for getting back to me again though - appreciate it...

  • Video files produced with E90 doesn't play on oth...

Hi all, the video file produce with my E90 communicator is not compatible with my other Nokia phone model's RealPlayer, can someone please tell me what exactly is the video format of E90?
Do I need to install a codes in order to play on other Nokia phone models? I assume it was Mpeg4.

First, try going to store at the top of itunes and check for purchases. Just to make sure that the movie was finished downloading.
If the video did not download correctly, then the only way to fix it is to download it again.
In your account screen in the itunes store, there is a purchase history section. In this section, you can report problems with music, movies or anything that you have downloaded.
Try using the purchase history section to report a problem and let the itunes store support that an error keeps coming up that the movie did not down load correctly

I upgraded to yosemite and iOS 8 in order to record with quicktime. But when I select Record a new movies I immediately get an Operation Could not be completed error. When I choose record audio or screenshots, I get a little further, but as soon as I select my ipad as the source I get the same error message.

You don't need to be a developer for this to work. I get the same error. Just one more thing on the list that make me upset more and more with Apple. Things just don't work out of the box like they used to.
This new feature was to be included with iOS 8 and Yosemite.

  • Distorted recording with QuickTime 7 using USB Audio CODEC

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8 with all the latest update from Software Update which includes QuickTime 7.1.3.
I am using QuickTime Broadcaster to stream back to itself (loopback) and record to disk at the same time. The input audio device is set to USB Audio CODEC (the default driver that comes with Mac OS X Tiger, and I am using an Alesis MultiMix 16USB mixer on a PowerMac Dual Core G5). I am using MPEG-4 Audio compression (no Video) of 16-bit, 44.1kHz and 128kbps (stereo).
The problem is that sometimes I get recordings (ranging from 1.5 hours to 2.75hours long) with distortion. Here is a short 20-second audio clip with distortion-free audio for about 6 seconds and then distortion sets in:
    http://www.netmedia.com.sg/files/SampleDistortion20s.mov
Whether it overlays on top of the original audio or replaces it, I cannot tell, but the transition is instant and smooth with no audible clicks or pops. The distortion can come in and go randomly. For example, I had one recording with distortion coming in at about 2 minutes plus and it remained until about 2hr10min when the distortion went away. Sometimes it didn't go away; other times it came in about an hour later. I also had once where the distortion last only for about 6 minutes somewhere in the middle of a 2.25 hours recording...all in all, it occurs at random. And I do get distortion-free recordings.
This problem also occurs on an iMac G5 with a Alesis MultiMix 12USB mixer, and in another Vara Software's Videocue PRO software which uses QuickTime for recording and playback. QuickTime 7.0.x and all versions of 7.1 also had this problem.
Because of this problem, I may need to use a convoluted method to stream and record to disk via QuickTime. By the way, I also tried streaming to another local subnet IP address just as a troubleshooting without success.

I too am having distortion problem (Sorry no solution here).
    Using OS 10.4.8, QT7.1.3, & Adobe Premiere 6.5 on a G4.
After I down loaded QT 7.1.3, my problems started. Is this when your problems started too?
Audio is in "slow motion" sound when editing. On rare occations, it sounds correct for 10 sec or so but sync is out and eventually reverts to "slow motion" sound. Even more bazar, when viewing a clip in a thumbnail preview, it works fine. So I know the orginal is good.
My contention is QT is causing this. All I want is my previous version of QT back. I think this might fix your problem too. Unfortunately, there is no reinstall that I can find that takes QT 7.1.3 off and puts QT 7.1.1or2. The reinstall QT 7.0.3 which is on the Apple website will not restall.
Looking for a reintall that will take QT 7.1.3 off, help anyone?

  • Youtube videos only open with quicktime--small screen/no audio. Flash works with Safari, not Firefox.

  • Video files captured with FCP 7 appear to be text files in the finder!

I've recently updated to FCP Studio 3 and am having a strange problem with HDV video that I have captured. The video shows up in the browser and plays in the timeline just fine, but I am unable to send any footage to Motion. I get an error saying that the file is missing. I cant even import directly from within Motion because the video files aren't even visible to the program! I am also unable to use any of the video files in drop zones in Master Templates in FCP. If I navigate to my footage in the finder, the files appear as text files. Yet if i double click on one, it opens in Quicktime and plays. This happens whether I capture video with the apple intermediate codec or any of the new Pro Res codecs.
I should mention that I had no problems before i updated. Help!
    Jerry

    See this link:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2108336&tstart=90
Another work around: after capturing in Pro Res, when you look at your clips in the browser, when you label them add .mov to the end of the label. Then modify>rename>file to match clip. This will convert file on your scratch disc from tesxt file to .mov QT file which you can then use in other applications.

  • Recording with Quicktime and adding effect

Hi all. I am recording Firewire video in Quicktime Player. The audio comes from a seperate source, through the line-in. To synchronize, I need to delay the audio by 600 ms. Does anyone have a method of doing so? I have an AU delay that would work. I just can't figure out how to apply it to the live lin-in.
Thanks very much for any help.
    Jeremy

I'll pass on some things I discovered, in case anyone has this question or anyone can add to this.
I succeeded to some degree, by doing this:
    1. Installed Soundflower; this creates virtual sound inputs and outputs, so sound can be passed between applications.
    2. In GarageBand, I created a real instrument.
    3. Set input to Line-in
    4. Added the Voxengo Delay AU (http://www.voxengo.com/product/sounddelay) which is free and simple. The Apple AUDelay repeats the sound as well, rather than just delaying it (unless I missed something).
    5. Set GarageBand's sound output to Sountflower, and turned monitoring on.
    6. In QT player, new movie recording, with audio input set to "Soundflower".
The good news is that I can save the GarageBand document, which can be opened and everything is immediately running. But, it would be nice if there was a way to add an effect to any input directly so that I only have to use one application.
Any suggestions to streamline this? It is for an installation which will be run by students, so the fewer steps needed to set this up the better.

  • Can video files made with a Canon XA-10 be imported into FCPX?

Files made with a Canon XA-10 do not seem to be recognized by FCPX.
Recording system of camcorder is  MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.
Is there a format problem or a media conversion that needs to be made?
    Thank you.
    John

Tom is exactly right.  Connect the XA10 to the computer using the USB cable that came with it.  Then go File > Import from Camera.
Up will pop the import from camera window, which should show two cameras -- your Mac's built-in iSight camera, as well as your XA-10.  And you should see the thumbnails from all the various videos you've shot with the camera.  Just select the ones you want to import and click Import.
FCPX will begin importing (and transcoding) the videos.  Do not disconnect the camera while this process is unfolding (it may take a while depending on how many videos and how long the videos are).

  • Optimizing / compressing video for web with Quicktime

I have a ~70mb (3 minutes long) m4v video that I need to get to a much more reasonable file size for playing on a site that will primarily be accessed via iPad.
I don't know if it matters, but the video will need to play automatically upon page load.
I've read through a few tutorials for doing this with Quicktime, however I think I'm missing something..
From the Export pop-up menu, there should seemingly be an option to choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie." I have only 480p and iPod/iPhone/iPad options(which I believe would result in a viewing frame that is too small).
How can I proceed with web-optimizing this file in Quicktime? (Or is there a better solution? I tried Sorenson Squeeze, but that had a large watermark..)

I have a ~70mb (3 minutes long) m4v video that I need to get to a much more reasonable file size for playing on a site that will primarily be accessed via iPad.
File size is directly proportional to the combined total data rate of your file. If you want a smaller file, then you need to reduce the audio + video data rate of the file. Unfortunately, overly reducing the data rate can adversely affect the audio/video quality of the file. Depending on the encode settings (data rate, encode matrix dimensions, display dimensions, entropy option, intra/inter frame options, number of encode passes, etc.), user tolerance for minimum quality level, the specific target ISP speeds required, application to be used, etc., the possibilities are relatively endless. Basically, the file you describe above has a combined total data rate on the order of 3.1 Mbps. Such a data rate might be considered low for a full 1080p file, adequate for a 720p file, or excessive for a VGA file depending on the graphic complexity of the file. In short, it is difficult to properly answer your question without additional information or actually seeing the file in question. (I.e., proper encoding of content is as much an art as a science.)
I don't know if it matters, but the video will need to play automatically upon page load.
It may matter depending on how the web site is coded and/or how the content is to be accessed by the target iPad device.
From the Export pop-up menu, there should seemingly be an option to choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie." I have only 480p and iPod/iPhone/iPad options(which I believe would result in a viewing frame that is too small).
The option and tutorial you reference require the use of QT 7 Pro which the option you reference sounds nore like a QT X player export option. (Once, again, what you can do will depend on the software you are trying to use to create your file and a 480p file could normally be anything from an 853x480 (16:9 aspect) file to a 640x480 (4:3 aspect) file or an anamorphic 720x480 file displaying in either the 16:9 or 4:3 aspect. So I really don't know what you consider a "small" viewing frame.
How can I proceed with web-optimizing this file in Quicktime? (Or is there a better solution? I tried Sorenson Squeeze, but that had a large watermark..)
As previously mentioned, there are many applications that can be used here—QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, QT X, HandBrake, etc. to name just a few. I personally would recommend the free HandBrake app since it offers both manual and automatic preset options, as well as, allowing you to create anamorphic or non-anamorphic encodes targeting either a fixed level of quality or a target file size depening on your needs. Unfortunately, the more options you have, the more decisions you need to make which means the more you need to critically analyze your target needs/requirements—which is frequently something many video users are trying to avoid.
Basically, if you want more specific advice, you will first have to better define your specific needs here.
