Resizing an image in Preview

When I view some of my pictures in Preview they are way too big.  I know I can zoom out or zoom to fit or change the size int the Scale window, but I want to make the size change permanent.  Isn't there a way to do this?

These are instructions from Preview in Lion, but I'm sure they're similar in 10.4.
Open an image in Preview/Tools/Adjust Size. You should "Save As" and keep the originals. Once they are resized, you can not enlarge them agian without losing quality. 1024x768 pixels is a good overall size for viewing on the computer and emailing.

  • How can I resize an image in Preview?

    There has been lots of discussion about Preview but non really answers my question. If I resize an image and duplicate it the duplicate over rides the settings of the original - so now I have 2 images the same size which is not what I want. I want the new image smaller but to keep the original the same size as before resizing. Versions seem to do the same thing, and as far as I can make out so does export. I know you can revert one of the duplicate images to get it back to the original size but it is a rather convoluted process.
    I know there are very clever people here so perhaps one of you can give me a work flow to do what I require. Thanks in advance.

    Of course, you can save some steps by duplicating the original file first, and then resize the copy.

  • Batch resizing images with preview

    When I try to batch resize images in Preview I have an error message: not enough space reduce volume?

    File - Automate - FitImage
    or
    File - Scripts - Image Processor
    Both should do what you want.

  • Unable to edit images in Preview

    I think this has been an ongoing issue based on forums, but still cannot find an answer.  I am trying to resize an image and I get: The document “_____” could not be saved.  I have tried save as, duplicate, etc... no luck.  Anyone have any success in getting this done?

    Hmmm, I wonder if that window is hidden or off screen? Have you moved the pic window around to look under it?
    Might try this...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
    Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Bridge Exports Changes Resolution from 300 to 72 dpi, resizing my image

    I like to use Bridge (CS5) to export my photographs for printing, and frequently I will use the Export feature to resize the images (e.g., 5x7 vs full size), but every time I export it recharacterizes the images as 72 dpi, vs the 300 dpi I prefer.
    Consistent with some of the previous postings (~2 yrs ago) I have seen on this topic the exported images are now "sized" much bigger (29"x20" for what should have been ~5"x7"), and hence expectantly I haven't lost any resolution, but it's aggrevating to have the dpi changed.
    Can anyone tell me how to export without having the dpi changed?
    And while I'm at it, can anyone confirm that I'm not loosing image resolution?
    Thanks so much!!

    Can anyone tell me how to export without having the dpi changed?
    Can't find any other settings to change and just having tested it I can confirm that it sets ppi (it is pixels per inch -ppi- for a digital file which is made from pixels and dots per inch -dpi- from the ink dots of a print ) to 72.
    And while I'm at it, can anyone confirm that I'm not loosing image resolution?
    You already stated yourself that you did not loose pixels, therefor the size of the files stays the same. It is just a mater of figures. 300 ppi means a larger concentration per inch and 72 pixels per inch means a smaller concentration of pixels per inch. Given the same amount of pixels for both settings this means a smaller image dimension for 300 ppi and a larger image dimension for the 72 ppi.
    300 ppi is some 'magic' number from printed press, but it really depends on the need of the job related printing machine. If you have a small image and need to look closely it should have a larger concentration per inch to reflect its sharpness.
    However theoretically you would almost have the same visible quality when printed on 72 at billboard sizes. That's because you always have a large distance between your eyes and the bill board. If you look closely you will see the dots (because the billboard is a product of ink dots…) but of course it is not meant to study at that close range.
    The same is for judging sharpness on your computer. Ideally you do so at 100 % for correct judgement at real size pixels. But in reality there will be almost no situation you will study a print at that same distance
    Any thoughts on why these would be different?   And am I fretting over things unncessarily?
    Only guesses, the use a different algorithm or calculation scheme, in my case I tried a Canon Raw (converted to DNG) without any ACR settings then the basics applied and found that Bridge export jpeg 11 creates larger files then using PS.
    But there are some other concerns I have and that certainly would make me fretting in use of export module:
    First of all I almost never use it, merely in this cases for testing, because using the menu tools give a shortcut to Photoshop / Batch and inhere I have created several dedicated resizing and resaving actions that also places the files in preset folders.
    But with this small test I found out that
    a: it changes ppi to 72 ppi, not a very big deal but I did not asked for it nor did I wanted it.
    b: it converts my Adobe RGB color space to sRGB and I certainly did not want that without my explicit wish for this conversion, so this is more then a bit worrying to my concern.
    c: it seems to apply a sharpness that I certainly did not want to happen without my knowledge, and this rules the use of the export module out completely.
    Since I only tried a DNG file without settings or retouch/developing  in Photoshop the jpeg generated by PS was not very sharp. This makes sense to me because I have set my basic ACR to apply sharpening only to preview. There are a lot of different sharpening theories around but I use one in PS itself. So I was a bit shocked to learn that the export module did all those for me unwanted and not adjustable settings putting me completely out of control…
    So if you want to have full control about things happening under the hood yourself just start creating actions in PS, it is very easy to record an action and even more easier to play it. Instead of every time dragging files to export module and always recheck the image options (it seems to reset itself always to jpeg quality 8 on my system) only select the files you want to resize and choose menu tool / Photoshop Batch and select the wanted action. hit OK and your almost done, PS does the rest.
    The great thing of the latest PS CS6 action pallet is the extension with a so called 'insert conditional' that let's you create an 'if - then else' action for both landscape and portrait resizing actions so you don't need the 'constrain to fit' or 'fit image' option. Just once create an action for both resizing dimensions and then create a new action with insert conditional. choose If image is landscape play action…. / else play action….
    It is really a very productive way. I have a lot of actions (organized in sets for better overview) and even one that creates 4 different sizes in 4 different folders using 1 go in Bridge

  • Resize photos option in Preview not working

    I use Preview to resize my photos depending on where I'm posting or sending to. Since I've downloaded Yosemite I will resize photo  and it's not working. I have my photos in iCloud drive & am working between an iMac and a iMac Pro. I'm trying to resize to send out to  have printed vs. at home printing. This problem has only happened since upgrading to Yosemite. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Resizing works fine here.
    Best practice is:
    Open image in Preview
    Tools > Adjust size;    enter the new values and click OK
    Press the option button then     File Save As give it a new name and save to desktop

  • Canon MP560 no longer recognized by Image Capture/Preview

    I have a Canon MP560 wireless printer/scanner and for some reason the scanner can no longer be seen by either Image Capture, Preview, or the Canon mp560 scanner toolbox under the Print menu. This happened either after installing 10.6.5 or after installing the latest Canon Printer Driver updates (I am not sure which caused it, as I did both updates recently...)
    It can, however, be seen by MP Navigator 3.0.
    Anyone found a fix for this yet?
    thanks

    Okay, have done some testing and found some interesting things.
    With a new install of 10.6.5 (selecting not to add any printers) I was not able to locate any Canon AIO via wireless. The Default Add Printer pane was empty so it looks like the printer and scanner driver needs to be present on the Mac. For the printer this is understood, as the Canon protocol 'canonijnetwork' is not present in the BJPrinters folder located in Library > Printers > Canon (due to the customized installation the Canon folder was not even present). In checking the Image Capture folder (HD > Library) I also found that the Devices folder was missing. Inside of here you would normally find the Canon IJScanner package/s for a standard installation of 10.6. But with the customized install this package was not present and appears to influence the Mac's ability to 'see' the networked scanner component. To confirm this, I installed the Canon v2.4.1 driver update, which in turn created the Devices folder in Image Capture and consequently made the scanner component appear in the Default Add Printer view.
    Another observation was that prior to installing the Canon v2.4.1 update, Image Capture would still display the MP on the network, but under the Shared menu - not the Devices menu. So even without the ICA driver installed nor the MP scanner driver installed, I was still able to use Image Capture to scan a document from the wireless MP. The same was true for Preview in as far as the Networked Scanner selection showed all the MP's present on the wireless network.
    At this stage I believe that the Canon driver update you mentioned may have contributed to part, if not all, of your current symptom. The install.log does have a record of what this update installs. If you checked it there may be record of the installer not completing correctly. In any case I assume that for your Mac this update did not complete correctly and is causing the problem. So one suggestion would be to run the [Canon Driver v2.4.1 update|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899] again (or for the first time if you simply used Software Update previously) to see if this repairs the CanonIJScanner packages.

  • Using Javascript & Actions to resize an image and add the filename as text

    Hello,
    I am currently working on a way to take an image, resize it and add exactly what is in it's file name (before extension) as a text layer. I have succeded in this BUT am having issues with file names that require more than one line of text.
    I need the text to align to the bottom of the image & the script or action must then resize the image so that the text does not overlap.
    Any ideas on how this can be done?
    At the moment I am using:
    -"Fit Image.jsx" to resize my image to a specific size (This was included in the Photoshop CS5 scripts)
    - A script to add the file name without extension and place the file name at a specific position.
    AdFileName.jsx
    if ( documents.length > 0 )
    var originalRulerUnits = preferences.rulerUnits;
    preferences.rulerUnits = Units.PIXELS;
    try
      var docRef = activeDocument;
      // Now create a text layer at the front
      var myLayerRef = docRef.artLayers.add();
      myLayerRef.kind = LayerKind.TEXT;
      myLayerRef.name = "Filename";
      var myTextRef = myLayerRef.textItem;
      // strip the extension off
      var fileNameNoExtension = docRef.name;
      fileNameNoExtension = fileNameNoExtension.split( "." );
      if ( fileNameNoExtension.length > 1 ) {
       fileNameNoExtension.length--;
      fileNameNoExtension = fileNameNoExtension.join(".");
      myTextRef.contents = fileNameNoExtension;
      // off set the text to be in the middle
      myTextRef.position = new Array( docRef.width / 2, docRef.height / 2 );
      myTextRef.size = 12;
            myTextRef.font="Arial-BoldMT"
            //set position of text
            myTextRef.justification = Justification.CENTER;
            myTextRef.kind = TextType.PARAGRAPHTEXT;
            myTextRef.width= docRef.width;
            myTextRef.height= docRef.height/ 2;
            myTextRef.position= [0, docRef.height * 0.88];
    catch( e )
      // An error occurred. Restore ruler units, then propagate the error back
      // to the user
      preferences.rulerUnits = originalRulerUnits;
      throw e;
    // Everything went Ok. Restore ruler units
    preferences.rulerUnits = originalRulerUnits;
    else
    alert( "You must have a document open to add the filename!" );
    Can the position be changed to allow more rows of text but keep it aligned with the bottom of the layer?
    How can I script in a way to make the image resize based on the amount of text lines?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    You can add a text layer any where the only thing you need to worry about is the size of the font you use.  You can normally calculate a font size by saving the images resoltuion and then setting its resolution to 72 DPI calculate a font size basied of the images pixel width and the number of characters you want in a line. After adding the text layer you can restore the image to its original resolution and align the text layer by making a selection and alignint the text layer to the selection.  There are nine posibilites like the positions in the selection you can align to like a tick tack toe board. You need to use a script to add the text layer because your retrieving the filename.  The positioning of the text layer could be done easily in an action the would use the scriot to add a text layer the do a select all  the align the added text layer to the selection.
    About your script don't make text paragraph just add new line characters to make a multi line text layer So it can be positioned easily
    I do just that with my stampexif action.  The action uses my stampexif Photoshop java script to add a multi line text layer containing some formatted EXIF data then the action centers the text layer and add a layer style to it. Link http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/StampExif.jsx Example

  • Photoshop CC: Have a template that I moved image into.  Image is too small.  How do I resize the image while in the template?  Or must I go to original image file and resize there again and again until I get the right fit?

    I have a template that I am able to plug different pictures into at different times.  The problem is that when I plug an image into that template, I find that the image is either too big or too small.  Is there a way to plug the image into the template and resize the image (and not the template itself) OR will I have to go to the file with the original image and resize it there and then try to plug it in to the template to see if it fits------and if it does not fit, go back to the original file with the image and resize it again and see if that fits---and so on and so on...........?  I have tried the" image size" option but it's hit or miss------mostly miss!
    Thanks!

    Read up on Smart Objects. It looks like you have no idea as to how to create and use them.
    Jut create a Smart Object from the layer containing whatever it image it is that you are "plugging into your template".  But you do need to learn the application at its most basic levels.
    Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.  You cannot learn Photoshop in a forum, one question at a time.
    Or is it possible that you don't even have Photoshop proper but the stripped-down Photoshop Elements?"
    If the latter is the case, you're in the wrong forum.  This is not the Elements forum.
    Here's the link to the forum you would want if you're working in Elements.:
    https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements/content
    If you do have Photoshop proper, please provide the exact version number of that application and of your OS.

    I need some help resizing my images on PS6. I am using a mac and have been trying to resize with same resolution and constaining proportions but for some reaseon the smaller resized image appears pizelated. Heres an image of before and after. The first image I use is a JPG 72dpi 1500px x1500px and I want to downsize it to 600x600px same res, but it keeps pixelating, this has never happened before. Any suggestions, thoughts?
    thanks!

    I wouldn't say pixelated; more like blurry.
    Like ConnectedCreative said, what steps are you using? Are you using "bicubic sharper" when resizing down?

  • Images not previewing properly in Bridge CS4

    I just did a reformat & reinstall of my whole system. I opened Bridge to get back to work and none of my images will preview accurately in Bridge. They just show as horizontal and vertical pixelated representations of the image. I did not have a problem with Bridge until after the reinstall. Anyone have any ideas?
    System details: Dell Dimension 8250 (I know, it's a dionsaur, but it works...for now), Windows XP Pro SP3, 1.5gb ram, Intel P4 3.06GHz HT
    Thanks, Dana

    Hi Dana,
    Which settings are you considering and what are the performance issues?
    You can optimize for certain workflows that will adjust processor intensive work, such as only generating large previews when displayed. If you're strictly talking about video card accelerated features, I think it's more a matter of On or Off as opposed to performance tuning. I just did a quick look and with video card acceleration enabled, in Full Screen Preview you can pan the image at magnifications much smoother.

  • How do I resize an image in Photoshop CS2?

    Hi! I'm trying to resize an image in Photoshop Cs2 with OUT making it grainy or blurred. Please help!? I know there's some key you can hold down while dragging with the mouse but eh I forgot it! o_0 please help!

    Jody...
    If you have a vector version of the logo, the smartest thing is to resize it as vectors to the size you want, and
    then
    rasterize it.
    Case in point:
    I was trying to make a 16px × 16px favicon for my blogspot site, and the only way I could get the details to appear nice and clean was to create the entire thing from shape layers, transform them all in one go to fit inside a 16px × 16px box I defined using guidelines, and THEN rasterize it using the Save For Web dialogue.

  • How do I resize an image in Lightroom?

    Hi everyone, was wondering if someone can help me as am trying to resize and image in lightroom and cannot find where to do it.. please help. thanks alexandra

    The Alamy upsizing is nonsense but you can actually use Lightroom export. You only have to use differnet numbers (presets) for different aspect ratios. These are the rough numbers for the aspect ratios I use:
    Assuming they want 16x2^20 (16.777.216) pixels rather than 16x10^6 (16.000.000) pixels, the image dimension to upsize with LR are the following:
    Aspect ratio 2:3 (portrait or landscape)
    ~ 5017 x 5017 pixels
    Aspect ratio 1:1 (square)
    ~ 4096 x 4096 pixels
    Aspect ratio 16:9 (portrait or landscape)
    ~ 5462 x 5462 pixels
    Aspect ratio 4:3 (portrait or landscape)
    ~ 4730 x 4730 pixels
    You can store those in presets, use sort to sort the images by aspect ratio and export one set after the other with different presets.

  • Automated Resizing of Images in Photoshop Elements 9

    I recently upgraded my wife's Photoshop Elements from version 6 to version 9.  However, there is one feature from version 6 that seems to not work in version 9.  When she drags an image into a blank template (of any size), the image drags in to the template in the full size.  So if the images are three times larger than the template, she has to resize every image after she drags them in which is a pain for her.  Previously in PSE6, when she dragged the image into the blank template, the program would automatically resize the image to fit within the window.  Then she could resize the iamge if she needed to.  It seems that there should be a setting for this, but I am coming up with nothing.  Anybody know of a solution to this?

    You didn't say if your on mac or windows, so you may not be familar
    with the elements organizer. The following workaround works on windows pse9,
    if your on a mac it may also.
    1. In the elements organizer, select (highlight) the photos you want to use.
        (don't open the photos into the elements editor, just select them)
    2. Back in the elements editor, with the project bin open, choose
       Show Files Selected in the Organizer.
    3. When you drag the photos from the project bin into your document, they should resize
       similar to pse6.
       If they are still to big, step back one step in the undo history panel from Transform the Frame to Place.
