Resizing graphics - and jagged edges

I have a lot of graphics that have been delivered to me 1920 x 1280. When I resize them in FCP 5.1.4., the edges are very jagged. BUT, when I bring those same graphics into After Effects and resize them and bring them into Final Cut, the edges are clean and perfect.
This happens whenever I try to resize footage or graphics in Final Cut. Which means that I spend a lot of time bouncing around between AAE and FCP.
Is there a way to resize graphics in FCP at a higher quality? (I do have the "motion filtering quality" set to "best" in the sequence settings...)
Thanks in advance!
Derrick

Are the clips in FCP still jagged after rendering? That might be the issue.... Or, are you scaling the pictures up when you resize them? Are they still jagged after exporting?

  • Adobe Flash Professional CC brush lag, and jagged edges

So, I've been trying to use adobe flash, but whenever i try to draw anything, the brush lags, and it comes out as jagged bent lines. If I use the brush really slowly, it will work properly, but I am unable to use the brush or pencil tool at normal speeds without getting these jagged lines. There is a screenshot included, please help. I've updated my graphics card driver, and my specs are down below.
    (PC Specs):
    AMD FX 4300 3.8GHz
    NVIDIA GTX 770
    8GB Corsair RAM
    Windows 8
I have a Wacom Bamboo, but both the mouse and my drawing tablet are laggy.

Here's a list of steps for reproduction of the issue. (My problem is that curves drawn with the pencil tool are automatically partially straightened, especially when drawing quickly. Here's a link to a video of the problem: https://forums.adobe.com/message/6673728#6673728)
    1. Open a new document and select the Pencil tool.
    2. Pencil Mode should be set to Smooth. In properties, set Smoothing to 0.
    3. Draw a line either using a Wacom tablet, Cintiq, mouse or Mac trackpad. Wait to release the stylus/mouse button and look at the representation of your gesture.
    4. Release the stylus and see how Flash rounds your curve inaccurately or straightens a section of it.
    5. Illustrate a variety of curve shapes at varying speeds, especially quick ones.
    6. Zoom in to about 800% and repeat the drawing steps to see more enhanced problematic drawing representations.
Results: Drawing with the pencil tool is erratic and does not represent input, especially quickly drawn curves.
Expected results: The pencil tool in Flash CC should perform accurately as it did in versions CS5.5/CS6.

  • Jagged edges in video

I just upgreaded to HD - I use Sorenson Squeeze to compress.  I DO de-interlace.  When compressing to mp4, when someone moves Im getting a jagged line on the subject that is moving.  Any suggestions?

Well, DV is lower field first.
But this is normal. When you de-interlace you are left with jagged edges where the individual field lines were. It is most noticeable with graphics/text and fine edges. Trust me I deal with this ALL THE TIME with my clients. They make commercials that are interlaced for broadcast, but almost ALWAYS watch their own material on computers. But they hate interlacing lines AND jagged edges... it is lose/lose.
Anyway your best bet is to use the best quality settings in compressor for de-interlacing. But you'll never get 100% rid of it. Sad fact of interlacing sadly.

  • HDV captured create movie for iDVD, lot of jitter and jagged interlace play

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I wanted to downconvert from HDV capture / edit, and then just create a standard video dvd for normal tv playback. Picture looks like it will be outstanding, but any movement results in horrible jitter and jagged edges. What am I doing wrong?

Wow thanks for quick reply. Apologies I didn't give full info.
I am viewing DVD on TV - well a plasma being played via DVD on PS3.
BUT, DVPRO50 is the only output that shows a "smooth" movie, if I playback on the canvas at 50% the interlace line are gone due to the scaling BUT the movie plays jumpy, so the DVPRo50 method is the only way I can get a smooth pan for example, every other method just gives a jumpy playback on DVD.
iDVD is set to Production quality, when I do a QT movie direct to iDVD without the DVPRO50, the quality is better but the movie is jumpy.
The movie is also 47 minutes long - it's quite big, file produced is about 19GB.
Also I understand about getting HD quality and BlueRay disk etc, but I would expect to get DVD quality from iDVD, doing the DVPRO50 conversion makes it pretty bad. but smooth!
As I said the anooying things is when I exported to MP4 on quicktime at 1080 HD and 18000kbps and 29.97 it also plays smooth for a short bursts of a few seconds (albeit jumping every second to 25 -> 29.97 issues), in 25 fps it's just blurry and jumpy. (playback on PS3)
    Thanks

  • Jagged Edges and Unstable Images when converting from Image Sequence to DV

    Hi,
I have an Image Sequence (very good quality) that I'm trying to convert using Graphic Converter into DV NTSC Video.
    I chose Progressive scan.
I find that the Images appear to have Jagged Edges especially when there is movement involved. Also, the entire image as a whole appears to be Unstable/ Vibrate Slightly.
Does anyone have Experience with this?
    Thanks,
    Rajnesh Domalpalli

Ntsc dv should be interlaced. also if you are viewing on a computer monitor the footage will appear nasty. It's best to view via an NTSC monitor.Do you have Final cut? if your images are correctly sized you should be able to drop the sequence into a final cut sequence set to DV NTSC and render out the resulting video. You will likely need a multiformat monitor as I believe the standard in India is a PAL variant PAL B not NTSC . in NTSC the screen is filled first by odd lines (Field1) then by even lines (Field2)thus a single pixel line will appear to turn off and on as the screen fills between odd and even lines. Straight lines and angled lines exhibit aliasing and flickering particularily when viewed on a computer monitor because computer screens fill the screen progressively from top to bottom and at a much higher refresh rate than NTSC. hope this helps

  • Jagged edges on vector art and fonts on R1900 using AI CS5 in OSX

    OS 10.6.4 (Mac Pro 2x2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 12GB ram 1066 MHz DDR3)
Problem with the R1900 Printer and AI CS5
I have been using the same printer with CS4 without any trouble whatsoever for at least 5yrs. Beautiful quality prints without so much as itch and great color control...
In October I finally made the switch to CS5 and my printing capability goes to hell.
Quality printing straight from AI to a non-postcript inkjet printer such as the R1900 doesn't seem to be an option anymore...
I get jagged edges on vector art and fonts. I do graphic arts/logos/prints and this is a huge issue...!
Apparently I have to save my AI files as PDFs and print from there, but this poses extra steps, troubles in sizing, colors, page set up...
I mean nothing beats being able to print direct from AI... I cannot understand what the problem is all of a sudden.
At home I have a late '06 Mac Pro running CS4 and printing successfully to a C88 epson inkjet printer under OSX 10.5
What is the matter, please help, this is cramping my style and performance???
    thank you

Ok this would not be a problem with 10.4.11 on a Power PV Mac but on an Intel Mac running 10.6.4 or running anything above 10.4.11 on any Mac you would need a postscript driver. Problem, there is no postscript driver for this model Printer this is actually a photo quality printer, that is what it does best.
So what to do the best one can do is to save the file as a pdf and print from Acrobat. There is no other way regardless of what one would like and expect.

  • Pasted Ai graphics (svg) have jagged edges

I am working on an animation in Edge Animate and have been copy and pasting all the assets from Illustrator. I noticed that the result, whether it is in the Edge interface or the published HTML file, has jagged edges. I assumed that they would be smooth since Edge was creating vector files, but that is not the case.
    Here's what I'm seeing:
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

We were able to solve the above issue that Micah was facing with SVG. Posting this here for the benefit of others seeing the same issue.
    Description:
In Edge Animate CC there existed a SVG pixilation issue which is observed on browsers when any SVG content is animated with “scale up” transform. To solve this problem in Edge Animate CC 2014 we are scaling up the container div by a factor of 10 (which is by default) and then using image filtering to reduce the resolution based on the inverse scale. Property panel will show this inverse transform scale since that is the transform scale applied to the svg element.
This scale factor can be changed from:
    1.      Close Animate
    2.      Open the preference folder:
    a.      Windows: C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Edge Animate\4.0.0\
    b.      Mac: /Users/{username}/Library/Prefrences/Adobe/EdgeAnimate/4.0.0/
    3.      Open the AppPrefs.xml file in a text editor.
    4.      Search for the Current line in AppPrefs.xml:
    <key>SvgAntiScaleFactor</key>
    <float>10</float>
    Update this to:
    <key>SvgAntiScaleFactor</key>
    <float>1</float>
    5.      Launch Animate
    6.      Now try to copy the assets from Ai to Edge and check if you still see the jagged edges. Note: reopening the old composition with the new preference settings will not help. You will need to re-copy the assets with the new preference setting for this to work.
    Thanks,
    Sujai

  • Photoshop CC 2014 all brushes and erasers have jagged edges

Okey so the problem is happening to my laptop (windows 8) I am using photoshop cc 2014. All my brushes and all of the erasers have jagged edges on soft brush and when I zoom in to 5000 I can clearly see that the edges is not 100% how they should be. Steps I have done to try to fix it is restarting my laptop, uninstall photoshop and re-installing it, reset all my brushes presets, reset all my preferences etc, searched it up on google until I come to this point where I had to ask here in the forums. So please help me I cant stand this anymore I got lots of work to do.

By this time, I'm sure you're already well beyond finished with your project but I just stumbled across the same problem.  I created a mask and hit "B" and went straight to painting away but didn't notice the pencil tool was selected (It's in the brush flyout menu). I expanded the flyout menu and switched back to brush and it was fixed.

Neither Photoshop Elements nor Premiere Elements support the retina display capabilities. There are a couple of feature requests for support to be added to Photoshop Elements but I don't find any for Premiere elements. You might care to open one at http://feedback.photoshop.com.

  • I Reinstalled Premiere Pro CS3, loaded a project I edited using CS3, and NOW I get jagged edges!

Hey everyone. I was using Premiere Pro CS3 to edit some footage I shot with my HPX170 in 1080i 24p Advanced. The P2 footage looked great in Premiere CS3. I upgraded to Premiere CS5, imported the same exact project into CS5 using the same 1080i 24p Advanced setting, and I got jagged stair stepping edges on the objects that were in sharp focus in my footage. Okay, I thought, I'll just reinstall Premiere Pro CS3 and continue editing the footage in CS3 since it looked normal in CS3 with no jagged edges. But, to my surprise, I'M GETTING THE SAME EXACT THING NOW IN PREMIERE PRO CS3!!!! What in the heck is up with that? How can the footage look normal when I imported and editied it before in CS3 and NOW I get jagged stair stepping edges?!!!! I even tried importing a fresh clip from the footage and that clip still has the jagged stair stepping edges. This makes no sense whatsoever! Does anyone know what's going on with this? It seems like an interlace artifact problem BUT, if that's the case, why didn't it do this the first time in Premiere Pro CS3? And trust me, I would have noticed right away if it did!

Hey Shooternz. Which exact playback settings are you asking about? I set the one of the playback settings to "Highest Quality" instead of "Automatic" and nothing changed. I unchecked 24p Pulldown in the "Interpret Footage" section and nothing changed (I don't even remember "24p Pulldown" being in the Interpret Footage section the first time I installed CS3, which is strange. Was that added in an update?). I tried different sizes like HD 1.5, HD 16:9, etc. in the Interpret Footage section and the jaggies are still there. Nothing seems to work. ??? This is weird because they weren't there the first time I edited the footage in CS3 when I installed CS3 the first time. One thing I noticed is, when I installed CS3 the second time and loaded the project, as the project was loading, I got a message that said something like "These project settings cannot be loaded. We will now switch to Desktop Mode." Would that have something to do with it you think?

  • Saving Shapes to PNG Causes Jagged Edges

    Hello,
I use a Mac and I have Illustrator CS6 and I've noticed something strange. I create shapes using the pentool. When I save the shape to a PNG with a transparent background, it looks smooth, however when I import and resize the shape it pixelates and it has jagged edges.  I've attached a screenshot so you can see what I mean.
I'm wondering if it's a setting or something that I don't have turned on (or off).  Or perhaps it's something else.  I'm curious why this is happening.  I’ve turned on the Anit-aliased Artwork and changed the ppi to 300…but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated…but I’m new to Illustrator and have no idea, so please use detailed and basic instructions that a noob can understand.
    Thanks in advance.

You answered your own question. A png is a raster image therefore resizing the image will pixelate it.

  • Jagged Edges after rotating a stroked image

I've have this problem a lot but I guess I'm just now getting around to ask about it.
When I have a  photo in cs2-cs3-cs4 etc and I rotate it at an angle I get fine jagged edges all along the sides. It's becomes very pronounced in a stroked image even when I I stroke the image after rotation. The problem is more obvious when the image is not at angles like 45 or 90 degrees but more visible at in between angles.
    Any suggestions?

What you are seeing is alaising, and it is inherent in raster graphics when the line to be shown is not parallel to the columns or rows of the image. It can be mitigated to some extent by antialaising, which softens the edges of the diagonal lines. When you select all of an image and stroke for a border, antialaising is used. With the polygonal lasso tool, you can turn antialaising on or off. Alaising is less apparent with very high resolution, but it can't be elilminated.
Here are triangular selections with antialaising turned on and off:

  • Print Quality and Jagged logos

    hi all
I have my logo in a wp doc, it now prints fine. I had a lot of trouble getting it to print well as it always appeared with jagged edges. If I copy and paste it into another doc it prints bad again. Why does this happen?
I've noticed that some documents also print a bit 'washed out' while others print nice and sharp.
So is there an output setting I've missed?
    It's driving me nuts.
    Thanks

There are two issues at work here. First, AppleWorks changes the resolution of any graphic format except PICT to 72 dpi. The best solution to this problem is to save the image as PICT before inserting into AppleWorks. My favorite for this is GraphicConverter, but you can use Preview or Photoshop Elements or any other application that can save as PICT.
For the second issue, this is a problem than became more noticeable with AppleWorks 6.2.9 & has something to do with postscript printing. Go to Preferences > General > Topic: Text & turn Fractional Character Widths on.

  • "Contract edges" gives jagged edges?

I'm on Photoshop CS5. I have an black ellipse shape that I have just rasterized. Then I selected the rasterized circle and went to Select--> Modify --> Contract --> 20 pixels.
Normally, when I do this, I get a smooth circle (in a dotted ants selection). But for some reason, the outputted is rough and jagged around the edges.
    Here's a screenshot of what I mean: http://i.imgur.com/GPiUbw4.png
It looks almost like a polygon that resembles circle.
How can I get that contracted circle to properly have smooth edges?

That's the only way it's ever worked for me.  I suspect you've just not contracted a selection that much very often and haven't noticed it.
You might want to try Transforming your selection.  Under certain special conditions (such as your example) that can work.
Beyond that, perhaps you might want to consider working with vector shapes, which can be resized more accurately and cleanly, such as with a Transform.

  • Jagged edges on still

    Hi,
I have a title graphic (white letters on black bkg) which I put a luma key on to get rid of black bkg. I put a drop shadow on the letters and made a motion move with key frames. The letters have jagged edges...even after the motion has stopped. I tried saving the jpg as a tiff, same problem. is there another way of doing this to correct the jagged edge problem? (BTW: It looks fine in Photoshop)
    thanks so much,
    Eve

Hi Eve, it might need to be rendered completely first. Press the Option (alt on some keyboards) and R keys together, when your Timeline or Canvas is the active window.
