Resizing Images for Websites

I am creating a website for a Family Farm. I was wondering if there is any good way to resize images using iPhoto for quicker loading times in websites. Most of the images I want to use are from a digital camera and are huge files.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As Dalya mentioned using the File->Export->File Export menu option will let you set the pixel dimension and quality level (amount of jpeg compression) to achieve small files for web use.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

All depends on what the end product is; a slide show on a laptop or projected 20 feet wide in a theatre. For best performance, images should be created to match the document size in; Inspector > Document > Slide size.
The slide size should as a minimum match the screen resolution of the Mac in;
system preferences > displays. The higher the number of pixels the better the quality.
However, many images are supplied that are much smaller than are required, resulting in them being enlaged beyond there best.

if you go in through the photos app and send your image to be wallpaper you'll have a bit more luck.
Also, go into the settings, accessibility and try turning off parallax motion.

Resizing images for iweb

What is the ideal length, width and total size (megabytes) for the images I drag into Iweb for website photo pages? Criteria: sharpness, quality, convenient download time for viewers.
Will be batch resizing in PS CS5 Mac with Image Processor.
Many photos are large RAW files.

I guess it really depends on how big you want your viewers to see them & what resolution you want them to be able to download. I save mine at 8 inches on the longest side at 72dpi resolution & this works really well. They are generally less than 400KB & load very quickly.

Optimizing images for website

So I have several images that have been edited / created via photoshop on my website http://www.info-junkie.com i saved this images as saved for html or something along those lines, which greatly reduced their size. However, I am still running into problems when loading my site. Upon checking site loading time tools, it is showing that most of my problems are coming from large image file size. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to optimize my images for my site?

I cleared my browsers cache took a snapshot then loaded you page something like 17 files were downloaded the largest one 150KB your background. Nothing big???

Resizing Images for a Beginner

When I teach students who are just learning to use a digital camera, one of their first questions is: How can I make my images smaller to attach to an email?
At this early stage, I want something easy. On Windows OS, it is just a right/click away when they get a resize image option. Is there a similarly easy way for my Mac students to accomplish this feat before they get further into their learning?
I tried opening the image in Preview and using the pull down menu when saving it as a jpeg, but the slider has to go all the way to the lowest quality before an image even gets to 500k.

As far as I know yes. The latest OS has it as well as Mountain Lion which is what I have.

Resizing images for idvd

Hello,
I've not yet tried to resize images yet . . . I've just opened idvd and bring the pics in. Most are in the 1.5 to 3.2 mg size. When burned to dvd and viewed on tv (4:3) they are passable. Maybe a little soft.
A post said, "Reformat your images to 100 dpi by the screen size (720x540 pixels for 4:3 TV aspect ratio or 854x480 pixels for 16:9 aspect ratio)."
Question: Is the 720 the width or height? So what about portrait shots? All my shots show 72 dpi in Photoshop. Are this suggesting that I increase to 100 dpi?

Resizing them probably won't do anything since iDVD resizes them for you. However I guess there is the change that when iDVD resizes them down to the proper TV screen size, it doesn't do as good a job compared to you doing it in Photoshop, so I guess worth the experiment (please report back your findings).
720 is the horizontal size, but you don't want to use that. You want to use 640. 640 square computer pixels are equal to 720 "rectangular pixels" on a TV. iDVD will do the conversion from 640 square pixels to 720 "rectangular pixels" for you. If you make it 720 on the computer, then iDVD will still convert it and distort your photo.
I put "rectangular pixels" in quotes because a normal TV is an analog device so there are not really "pixel" but an analog signal.
Ignore the DPI or PPI (dots per inch or pixels per inch) setting. That setting means absolutely nothing when displaying on a TV or on a computer monitor. It is a printing specification, so it doesn't matter what you set it as, it will look the same on the computer or the monitor (e.g. 640x480 at 72 dpi will look exactly the same as 640x480 at 100 dpi). All you care about are the absolute number of pixels (such as 640 by 480) in the photo.

What software do you reccomend for resizing images for web ?

I am looking for some software to help resize images on my mac to post online eg 470x 707 at 72 dpi (something similar to Faststone for PC would be good ) >Any recomendations?

72 dpi doesn't mean anything in terms of video and 470 x 707 is a rather peculiar size, what is the source of the video and what exactly are you trying to achieve.

I am running Aperture 2, and I am getting my photo's ready to be posted on my website. Problem is I can't seem to figure out how to resize the image and create thumbnails. I have gone through everything and I am running out of time. Is there anyone who can help?

You don't need to resize any images. What you need to do is export them. I don't know what site you're using, or how you're going to get them up there, but define an export preset that bounds the images to the size you want.

Using custom images for website?

Hi, I'm totally new to this Dreamweaver stuff so I'm sorry if this is very easy, but I have created an image in Illustrator that I would now like to use as a website. The image is this:
I have a background, and a menu bar and I'm trying to figure out how to use it as a background image. I'm looking to create a one column website that is liquid and has a little content on each page.

Of course, this CSS will only work if the background image is named "background.png", and it is in the same location as the page you are making. Perhaps it would be more helpful to do it this way -

This will place the background image on the page aligned with the upper, left-hand corner of the browser viewport. Now you will have to build the page's infrastructure so that the content is properly aligned with the background image. You may have problems doing this, as this approach is not normally one that is successful (i.e., designing a single background image containing all of your layout elements and then just trying to align content to it). Think about what will happen with that approach if someone makes their browser display text larger or smaller than you have used while you are aligning things!
A better approach is to make the background an image (if you use an image at all) that can tile to fill the screen no matter how large the screen is. Then build the page as a series of stacked rectangular containers, where each container is parent to a single part of the page's layout (like masthead, menu, content, footer, credit for example) and style each container with its own background image/color as needed. That way, if one container expands because text is resized, the whole arrangement can flex vertically to accommodate it. This approach will require that you understand enough about CSS to know that using absolute positioning is NOT the right way to go about making such a page.
If you are not so friendly with CSS, then I suggest you delay your beginning on this site until you have acquired some additional familiarity with it. A great way to get that is to read the "Missing Manual" volume for your version of DW. The book is published by O'Reilly press and is authored by David McFarland.

Unable to save image for website in photoshop

I am trying to save imges for my website in photoshop. after the image is resized and click on save for web devices, an error message will come up.

The exact error message is "The operation could not be completed" My operating system is XP and the version of Photoshop is Photoshop CS6 version

Background images for website enlarges on iPAD and iPhone

I have a responsive website. My CSS3 for the background looks like this:

It looks great on a desktop and on my home page on all devices. BUT when I go to pages that have a photo gallery on the the iPAD and iPhone 5 enlarge the background and it is not fixed anymore.
What am I missing?

Should I resize images for mobile version

Should I create smaller versions of images I originally created for my desktop, for my mobile version, for faster rendering? I will obviously lose the accross platform editing, but gain faster rendering on mobile device.

Phone layouts are smaller (by width and height) than desktop layouts, so you might want to proportionally resize the images to fit within the smaller phone pages as well. The actual page content is not added to the phone layout page thumbnail. That is intentional, to allow you to copy just the content you actually want into each page of a mobile layout. As you bring the content you want to add into each new page, you can resize it to fit within the smaller dimensions of the mobile screen.

Help: Resizing images for Printing with CS3

Hello All,
Thus far, I've done most of my printing with my Epson 3800 on paper below 8.5 x 11 which was no problem. Now I'd like to do some larger stuff like 13 x 19 and 17 x 25. Image size is 3504 x 2336 psd. @ 360ppi. (workflow is RAW to Adobe RGB 16-bit 8.2MP) I'd like to maintain the 360ppi resolution, but resize to say 12 x 18 or larger and then apply final sharpening.
My confusion is with the up-sizing steps themselves. I've heard it's best to increase image x% over target image size via Bicubic(?) and then to reduce x% to target size using Bicubic sharpener(?) or something to that effect. Can someone please walk me through the process so I can get the hang of it? Thank you!

Sounds like one of those tales from an older technology.
Just use the resampling method as recommended in the Image size dialog

Resizing Images for Web

Is there a way to specify the image size when publishing to mobileme gallery or when creating webpage in aperture?

I don't have aperture in front of me right at the moment to look at all the choices, but I always use the "constrain to be no larger than X by Y pixels" option when creating web pages. This makes sure all your photos fit within those constraints (as opposed to making them a specific size, which would distort them if they weren't all in that aspect ratio to begin with.)
