Resizing inconsistency

Two years ago I resized many photographs to 125 pixels wide for a website.  The results were nice and clear with an image file size of only about 5 kb.
Now, I’m trying to add new photos to the website. When I resize to the same 125 pixels wide (using bicubic sampling; 180 pixels per inch resultion) and go to save the image, I get a range of image quality options (low to max) of about 10 kb to 20 kb (5kb isn’t even available).  The image quality at 10kb is poorer than the older 5 kb images and only the 20kb is about the same.
I can’t figure out why I need to have much larger files now to get reasonable quality than I did in the past.  Below is the old 5kb image followed by the new 10 kb image.

Are you using File>Save As or File>Save For Web?
If you use save for web, you can play around with the settings or use
Optimize to File Size and enter 5 in the dialog.
One thing you should be aware of is that resolution for images displayed on the web
doesn't matter, only the pixel dimensions. So when you use the image size dialog, just
set the pixel dimensions and leave the resolution to whatever it is.

  • CF 8 - pdf format changes with page count

    when crating a cfdocument as pdf format when we create a
    document approx. 500 pages or less everything is fine. when we go
    over that number the font size and some formatting changes. we are
    at a complete loss as to why this happening as we have checked and
    rechecked every option possible. even going as far as scaling the
    report down to only 1 or 2 lines. very bizarre. any thoughts on why
    this is or a direction to troubleshoot this would be great. thanks
    -Ralph

    I'm not sure if this helps, but we've noticed formatting changes when the PDF writer considers the items in the cfdocument page too big for the layout (fonts resizing, inconsistent styling, etc).  We shrunk our content down (especially images) to make sure everything fit on screen.  also, if you are using images, make sure you are placing images in the cfdocument at the same height/width as the actual image file.
    Not sure how helpful that's going to be - sounds like your issue is more about raw file size than anything else, but thought I would mention it.

  • Inconsistent Alt - Right Click Brush Resizing in PS CS5

    Anyone else seeing the new brush sizing gestures working inconsistently?
    If I hold down the Alt key and click the right mouse button...
    - Sometimes I see a red brush facsimile that I can resize or make harder/softer by moving the mouse right/left or down/up.  I assume this is the intended behavior.
    - Sometimes I see just an outline of the size, which I can resize by moving the mouse right/left.  Hardness may be affected, but it's impossible to tell.
    - Sometimes I can't use the gestures at all; Alt + Right Click simply does nothing.
    I haven't been able to put my finger on it or investigate it in any great detail because I'm usually working on something and want to continue concentrating on that something.  Usually I'm using the Spot Healing brush, or the Clone tool, or the Eraser tool, or the Paintbrush tool.
    Complicating matters is the fact that I use both the 32 bit and 64 bit Photoshop CS5, and it's possible I have some setting different in one than the other.  I've been trying to use them kind of interchangeably just to get to know them.
    I just started both 32 bit and 64 bit versions (in succession) and tried all the above tools, and found that the second problem above was manifesting only in the 32 bit version.  Then I noticed my OpenGL settings had disappeared again.  I had thought the ATI 10.5 drivers had solved that, but apparently not - at least not completely.  So I'm back to using the AllowOldGPUs_ON registry fix until the next ATI driver update.  Sigh.
    After the registry fix, and verifying OpenGL settings are "Advanced" on both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, I see the red brush for all the above tools.
    I'll watch for the gestures going away again, and post the edit log (which I have enabled for detailed text logging).

  • How do you resize a photo in an iDVD drop zone?

    The themes in iDVD are virtually useless if you can't easily drag a photo into a drop zone and move and resize as necessary.  Using the method described in iDVD is ridiculously cumbersome but what's worse is that it doesn't work.
    Does anyone have a suggestion for making this task easier?  Does anyone know of better software that would replace iDVD?
    This problem has been around for years.  It's unbelievable that Apple allows the problem to continue.
    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks for the reply - I've just gotten around to playing with this some more and as you mentioned, I'm now creating a new image in Photoshop that repositions the image so that it places well in the iDVD template (soft frame in this case). Extra work, and it appears to be effective in the iDVD interface, but when I burned a test DVD the images were scaled differently in the final render to disk.
    I'm not trying to do anything out of the ordinary here - just want to burn a DVD of my baby boy for the grandparents. This is precisely the type of use iLife is aimed at... But something as simple as putting a picture of my son on the DVD menu took the extra step of composing in Photoshop in order to have his head not cropped ridiculously. Now even that extra work is altered on the DVD.
    I'm new to iDVD and might just need to work with it some more, but so far it just seems wrong and inconsistent with the rest of iLife to not have this flexibility.

  • Can I Make Font SIze Respond to Container Resize?

    I have a JDialog.
    I added a JPanel as the content pane.
    I use a GridBagLayout for all JPanels.
    The content pane also has a ComponentListener, and I use its componentResize () method to sense when user drags the Dialog to a new size.
    There are two sub JPanels, and one of them uses a CardLayout to conrol a set of other JPanels.
    All the JPanels have a collection of JTextFields and JComboBoxes that is determined at run time.
    My goal is to permit resizing to any size and keeping all components visible and fonts readable.
    That means controlling the font size.
    Getting a ratio from the requested size change and applying it to change the font size of all components almost works. Its good for all increases up to full screen. However I lose it on the way down. The panels shrink more than the font shrinks the fields and boxes.
    The Title and other insets prevent it from being perfect. There is also some slippage from JComboBox having an independent JTextField editor component. Their heights often are inconsistent, i.e. the JComboBox height ends less than the preferred size of its editor component.
    And, if not careful the componentResize ()degenerates into an infinite loop, i.e. I change the font and then pack () which triggers another call to resize.
    Anyway, does anyone know of a model for this problem.
    My goal is for it to stay consistent no matter how small it is shrunk.

    Hi Mike,
    That's right, MultiTouch and Gestures can not be used at the same time, but you should always be able to receive mouse events for 1st touch point.
    Could you try changing your code as below.
    function mouseDownHandler(event:MouseEvent):void {
    TweenLite.to(mainMenu.menuPres, .2, {alpha:.5});
    function mouseUpHandler(event:MouseEvent):void {
    TweenLite.to(mainMenu.menuPres, .2, {alpha:1});
    please sprinkle some trace statements in event handler to see if they get triggered.
    Also, did you try just adding event listener for MouseEvent.CLICK, instead of MOUSE_DOWN and MOUSE_UP.

  • Resize textarea based on external text doc

    I am wanting to make a scroller. I have it all working fine
    except the fact that i need the textArea to resize itself based on
    the amount of text that it is loaded. I have created one that
    scrolls vertical, i used scroller._height = scroller.length. and
    that sizes the text area to the amount of text that is there. But
    not i need a horizontal, side to side, and am not sure how to get
    the text area to size its width. Can anyone help?
    Thank you for your time

    The table column size is inconsistent, I set the columns in the table view and the items in the initialize method. I execute a service and task from a button action that loads data into the list, if I don't reset the columns in the table view in the succeed method then each column is the same width regardless of the content in the cells. If I do reset the table columns in the succeed method then the columns are resized based on content.
    I don't think it should be a requirement to reset the columns just to get the column widths to set based on the content in the cells. Is there a method on the table column or view that will resize the cells based on the cell content? I would prefer the largest value; column header content or the longest cell content for a column.

  • Smooth Text causing inconsistent font thinkness.

    Using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Version 9.0.0, I have "Preferences -> Page Display -> Rendering -> Smooth Text" set to "For Laptop/LCD screens." This setting initially give me a beautifully rendered ArialMT/TrueType. This is the "Actual Font" used for Helvetica in a PDF I am reading. As I scroll through the document however, later pages render the font with a heavier line thickness, making them look bolder. I find that if I resize the program window then the thinkness returns to the initial width and looks good. I can repeat this cycle. In the end the work-around is for me to resize the program window for each page I read. This is a bit tedious. I don't have the behavior with Smooth Text turned off. I am running Vista with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT. The "Use 2D graphics acceleration" option does not affect the behavior so I don't know that the graphics card is a factor here.
    Has anyone else experienced this inconsistency with the line thinkness of the font smoothing? Is there a fix or something I should look at to debug?

    It seems that this problem is limited to a specific PDF file. This leads me to suspect that it is the font that causes the problem. Based on the Font properties reported by Acrobat it seems that it is using the standard Arial font which should work reliably. Is there a way to get more detailed information about the fonts being used by Acrobat for the file?

  • Why cannot I resize the Tiles area of the start menu when the Task Bar is anywhere but at the bottom (Left, Right, Top)

    I have been using the Taskbar on the LEFT. Even before it came to windows, I used a freeware taskbar written by some dev - if I am not mistaken in Windows 3
    This is because it is always easier to move the mouse Left-Right than Up-Down without lifting your hand off the mouse to reset the position, especially now in these times of hires monitors.
    The taskbar is by default at the bottom in Win 10. Why? Who knows. I moved it to the left.  I found that when the taskbar is at the bottom, I could pop out the startmenu and RESIZE the TILES area.
    But in any other position, Left, Top or Right you cannot resize the tile area of the taskbar. You first have to set it to the bottom, resize and then reset it left and if this is the wrong size for you you have to go thru all this over and over.
    Since resizing is allowed for the taskbar it should not be restricted to only the bottom setting users.
    Bernard

     I found that when the taskbar is at the bottom, I could pop out the startmenu and RESIZE the TILES area.
    But in any other position, Left, Top or Right you cannot resize the tile area of the taskbar.
    I can confirm your finding. It's clearly wrong to have such an
    inconsistency. Have you reported it using the reporting facility?

  • AdvancedDataGrid column resizing not working.

    Flex sdk: 3.2
    Flash player: 10
    OS: Windows
    Browser: IE or FireFox
    I have an ADG for which column resizing does not work properly.   Unfortunately, I cannot create a standalone example that reproduces the problem.   The problem appears to be fairly straightforward: when the user drags the column to resize, the component appears to compute a delta that uses an incorrect combination of component and parent component X origins.   As a result, as the ADG is placed farther to the right, the error increases.
    I have tried the 3.5 and 4.1 sdks but encountered enough new compiler and startup errors that I gave up.
    I have developed a workaround by handling the mousedown and columnstretch events on my own.   I discovered that the event object coordinates seemed to be inconsistent and flat out wrong.  On the other hand, I found the ADG mousex coordinates to be more reliable.   On columnstretch, I then set the minWidth of the target column to my computed width  and it seems to fix the problem.   Actually, I don't understand why that would work.
    That said, is there a known problem with certain containment hierarchies that can create this situation.   I would prefer not to override builtin behavior unless I have to.   Is it possible that a styling skin could cause this (something I did not add to my standalone example)?   I noticed that a skin was the "target" (not "currenttarget" of the event).
    Thanks for any help,
    Ross

  • Resizing in Illustrator CC using the Bounding Box is no longer accurate. What happened?

    In Illustrator CC, resizing an object using the bounding box is no longer accurate. Snapping to other objects or the grid or anything is completely wrong and, worse, inconsistent. Here is a single box being resized 3 times to the same object. Each time, it becomes a different size.
    I used the center-left handle to resize the black box, snapping it to the right edge of the red box. You can see that, each time, it "snaps" to the edge incorrectly. My 80 pt box becomes 78.479 pt, then 79.295 pt, then 79.518 pt.
    This is totally unacceptable, obviously. I'm not sure what the point of guides are if they aren't actually guiding. Does anyone have a fix for this?

    Ethan,
    Did you reinstall after updating to Yosemite? I believe the right order/way is to update the OS first, then reinstall the applications, see 6) below.
    Or you may have a look at the list since something is obviously wrong.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Panel not resizing for high-resolution monitors

    Received this in an email from a person using an HTML5 panel:  "What I'm seeing on a high resolution monitor (3840x2160) is that the panel doesn't resize to fit its container."
    The container for the panel is appears to have scaled up, but the panel itself is tiny within this container.
    The pixel dimensions on which the panel was built (and what's coded into the HTML for the panel) makes the panel the correct size on "normal" monitors, but it doesn't appear to up rez for high-resolution monitors.  The user can scale the rest of Photoshop's menus and panels using some interface in the OS, but the panel doesn't scale.
    Anyone have any thoughts on this weather or not it's possible to get panels to up-rez for high-resolution monitors?
    Thanks.

    qsea wrote:
    Why is there no scaling for high resolution monitors in Adobe Bridge CC?
    Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC and Indesign CC have 200% scaling…
    Inconsistency between or among applications in the artificial "suites" should come as no surprise.
    The "suite" concept is a fabrication of Adobe marketing and bean-counting types.  The engineering teams are totally independent of each other, they are not only in different buildings but in different cities and states of the American Union, even in different countries.
    The fact that they have little if any communication among them is highlighted by requests occasionally made in these forums by top Adobe engineers to let the other teams know when there are problems in one application that impact our workflow in another one.

  • Resized animated gif ImageIcon not working properly with JButton etc.

    The problem is that when I resize an ImageIcon representing an animated gif and place it on a Jbutton, JToggelButton or JLabel, in some cases the image does not show or does not animate. More precicely, depending on the specific image file, the image shows always, most of the time or sometimes. Images which are susceptible to not showing often do not animate when showing. Moving over or clicking with the mouse on the AbstractButton instance while the frame is supposed to updated causes the image to disappear (even when viewing the non-animating image that sometimes appears). No errors are thrown.

    When you press the "Toggle scaling"button it switches between unresized (properly working) and resized instances of three of my gif images. Notice that the left image almost never appears, the middle image always, and the right image most of the time. The right image seems to (almost) never animate. When you click on the left image (when visble) it disappears only when the backend is updating the animation (between those two frames with a long delay)
    Why are the original ImageIcon and the resized ImageIcon behaving differently? Are they differently organized internally?
    Is there any chance my way of resizing might be wrong?

    It does work, however I refuse to use SCALE_REPLICATE for my application because resizing images is butt ugly, whether scaling up or down. Could there be a clue in the rescaling implementations, which I can override?
    Maybe is there a way that I can check if an image is a multi-frame animation and set the scaling algorithm accordingly?
