Resizing objects with a clipping mask around them?

How do I resize an object (or group of objects) with a clipping mask around it? While normally I could just enter the dimensions into the Transform boxes for width/height, what that does is resize the outermost area(the clipping mask area) to those dimensions. But what I want to resize is the visible object within the clipping mask-- how do I do this quickly?
It's for a set of objects I'll have to resize frequently...

Nope... it scales the clipping mask itself.
The objects I'm trying to scale are buttons, I've got the various elements (shadows/highlights, etc) in a group, and that group includes the clipping mask. I select the whole group, click the clipping mask, select edit contents, and the button remains unchanged while the clipping mask gets scaled.
(The clipping mask is there as a workaround to create an innershadow effect, since PS has one and Illustrator doesn't.)

  • How do I crop an image with a Clipping Mask using a circle instead of a rectangle?

I watched Adobe TV Illustrator's tutorial about cropping images with a clipping mask. In the video, the presenter uses the rectangle tool with the clipping mask, and makes a reference that the circle or vector shape could be used, but I cannot figure out how to get the circle.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-illustrator-cs6/cropping-images-with-clipping-masks/
I'm new to Illustrator and need step by step instructions!
    Thanks!

    Christine,
As Larry said, and as I said in the first post:
For a Clipping Mask, you just create a path, in this case a circle, and place it on top of the image, then select both and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
You can see the shortcut when you use the dropdown; it is Ctrl+7 for Windows.
At least in the old days, you could also use Alt/Option+O+M+M (easy to remember, Object>Mask>Make).
It is easy to skip/overlook the exact steps.

  • Objects with effects applied to them print with a white background around them

I have an object with a dropshadow effect applied to it. When attempting to print my file, the object with the effect prints with a solid white box around it, blocking out a portion of the objects behind it. Why is this, and how do I fix it? I have tried to apply the "flatten transparency" option to the object with no result. The only way I have found to successfully print this is to import the whole file into Photoshop and print it as a raster file. I would like to preserve this file as vector...

I think the problem lies with your ripper/printer not understanding the higher level PostScript - convert raster effects to greyscale if at all possible - might help...

  • Help with Illustrator Clipping Mask!

    Hi,
I am trying to make a clipping mask over a alot of vectors (to be specific, have made an envelope design so am trying to use the template/evenlope outline as the clipping path) however when ever I try to create the clipping mask - command 7 - all the vectors inside are deleted mostly or half dissapear.
    I have tried;
Making sure the clipping path is the top layer in the layers panel
Ungrouping the vectors and selecting individually to mask all together
Putting all into a new document and clipping
Seperating the clipping path and what I want to clip into differnt layers
None of the above has worked as yet, I have done this plenty of times before but am not sure what I am over looking. I am using CS5 on a mac.
    Thanks for anyones help!
here is what I am trying to do; I need all of the vecotrs to be masked by the envelope outline.

I you are using a template in AI CS 4 or 5 then it is possible thgat the template is an artboard which you cannot use as a clipping mask.
You would have to draw a rectaangle to the size of the enevelope template and use that rectangle path as a clipping mask.
Ok! Besides from that possibility if yiou are printing an envelope withy objects that have to be clipped to the edge of the front of the enevelope that is not a very good idea.
Even if you are printing and then converting the envelope it is a bad idea as you8 would definitely need a bleed and that would wrap around to the back of the envelope and in a nott so pretty way.
OK so say you are using an inkjet that can print on an envelope and it can even successfu8lly print it with a bleed feature the way thoise  bleed features have to work is that they enlarge the art slightly and so whyat every you design and create will be enlarge and trying to figure that out is not going to be very easy.

  • Difficulty with simple clipping mask project

I'm just learning Illustrator (CS3) and have a simple project that I'm having trouble with. I'm hoping someone can give me a brief step-by-step.
Basically, I'm making a cube and want to "insert" a photo into the front side of the cube using a clipping mask. I made the cube, which is slightly offset from "front facing" to give it a 3-D look, using the rectangle tool and some lines drawn with the pen tool. But when I went to add a clipping mask to the front panel, it wouldn't let me, saying something about you can't do that when the selected path is part of a group.
Any ideas. This seems simple, but there's something I'm not getting, apparently.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Assuming your cube is a cube and your photo is square, and the photo is embedded:
    1. RectangleTool: Click (dont drag). Enter 1 for both height and width. Click OK.
    2. DoubleClick the Rotate Tool. Enter 45°. Click OK.
    3. DoubleClick the Scale Tool. Enter 58% vertical, 100% horizontal.
    4. RotateTool: AltClick the bottom anchorPoint of the trapezoid. In the resulting dialog, enter 120°. Click Copy.
    5. Object>Transform>TransformAgain (Ctrl D).
Now you have an isometric cube.
    6. Select the raster image and the face of the cube that you want the image on. Object>EnvelopeDistort>MakeWithTopObject.
    Or:
    1. Select the raster image.
    2. Effect>3D>Extrude&Bevel. In the resulting dialog, turn on Preview. Rotate the proxy cube, adjust extrusion depth as desired.
    Or:
    1. Drag the raster image to the Symbols Palette.
    2. Rectangle Tool: ShiftDrag to draw a square. Solid fill, no stroke.
    3. Effect>3D>Extrude&Bevel. In the resulting dialog, turn on Preview. Rotate the proxy cube, adjust extrusion depth as desired.
    4. Click the Map Art button. In the resulting dialog, navigate to the surface onto which you want to map the image and select the Symbol from the popup menu.

  • Help with a clipping mask

Hopefully I can adequately explain this. I'm a design dabbler so excuse my lack of knowledge.   I have a text logo that I am trying to place a tennis string (essentially just a grid of strings) mask over.  I want the mask itself to be transparent so whatever color is underneath makes up the strings.  For the life of me, I can't get it to happen without making the logo transparent or just jacking it up in general.  I know this is probably really easy so please help me and make me feel stupid in the process.

    sure, but it depends on whether or not those lines are shapes or paths. if they are paths;
    1) select all of the paths that make up the net
    2) go up to object>expand, make sure you have "strokes" checked in the dialogue box that pops up.
    3) then go to your pathfinder pallet (window>pathfinder if it isnt already open)
    4) click on the top left option (unite) and click it.
    5) the word elite has to be an object not text so if you have not already done that, click on the text (dont highlite it) and press cmd+o, or ctrl+o if you are on a windows machine)
    6) now select both objects (the net and "elite") and select object>clipping mask>make or type cmd+7
if the lines are shapes and not paths start from step 5.

  • Smart object with a layer mask.

I'm using CS4 and I have run into a problem. When ever I create a smart object, photoshop applies a layer mask where is never did before. I can't figure out how to revert photoshop drawing the smart object without the layer mask.
It's driving me insane. I can't do anything and when I remove the layer mask, the smart object fills the whole canvas. Not happy!

  • Logo with gradient clipping mask into InDesign?

    Hi all,
I have a quick question—I am using CS4 (illustrator & InDesign) on a Mac OSX platform.
QUESTION: I have a one-colour logotype (just text) that fades into transparency (a gradient clipping mask applied to the type in Illustrator). I would like to verify how I should properly prepare and import this logo into InDesign—to be sure I do not lose the actual transparency effect on various pages when applied in my InDesign book.
    Thanks kindly,
    Chemol

Hi Bob, thank you for your response—I meant to say my mask was an "opacity mask" (applied in the transparency panel) does that make a difference? Will the opacity still work in InDesign as an ai placed link?
Also, does it matter if I just copy the logo in illustrator, then past it into InDesign? (or is that a poor methodology?)
    Thanks kindly,
    Chemol

  • Live effects such as Drop shadow and blurs convert to flatten images with giant clipping masks preventing edits?

Without reason and at great costs, live effects convert to unusable web style graphics. This is not photoshop. Is adobe moving to kill Illustrator in favor of PhotoShop style web graphics? Suddenly every time I open a template the drop shadow or Gaussian blur has been converted to transparent overlay with a giant opacity mask applied. In trying to repair the damage by releasing the opacity mask the whole graphic jumps to a black square? Not all of the effects do this, just newer templates. I first thought because a fellow artist creates her graphics in RGB work space that this was the cause. It is not. Now randomly this happens. What am I doing wrong that causes this.

No they are ones my company creates for products we carry. We print on the items. I need to center logos on the items and not the items and the shadow. I also need to update the items as time goes by. It used to be as simple as open the file and make the needed changes. Now I have to start from scratch on the items that self convert. Any time a computer file self converts to a different type of file you have a problem. Only certain templates have morphed like this. I'm sure it's something I'm not catching.

  • Exporting DVD with Compressor leaves masking around all edges

I'm exporting a video from Avid that was shot on a Canon GL2 Standard Definition Camera in 16:9 Anamorphic. I've successfully exported from Avid and everything shows as 16:9. I exported to a QuickTime Reference. I was able to successfully export a Web version in H264 that is full 16:9, I did have to change the pixel size to 864x486. However when I go to make a DVD I can't change the actual dimensions. I can crop it which removes a bunch of the frame. Does anyone know how to successfully get this compressed in a format that wont leave black lines around the top bottom and left and right.

I think you need to show some screen captures showing the differences between CS6 and CC and CC 2014.  Problems like you describe are common problems when users don't know how to make composite images well.   If you can do it well in CS6 I would think you can also do it well in CC and CC 2014 if you can not then there is a problem.  Please show the differences between version of Photoshop.

  • Since iOS 6, my calendar app shows many events as gray with a dashed line around them.  dont mind the lines, but i want my color coding back so i can distinguish between multiple calendars.

How can I make my ipad show the designated calendar color for events? Have tried using ms exchange and gmail...they look identical.  It seems to happen to items I add from my computer or android phone, but not events added from ipad.

Somehow my settings and calendars have gown complicated...I have Microsoft Exchange, Google, AND gmail.  What ended up working was switching all of them off, shutting down my ipad, restarting my ipad, and then choosing one of them to switch back on.  Now all the colors are correct.  Thank you, emdak.

  • Problems with clipping mask, Photoshop CS6

I have been working with a clipping mask around a complex item. This included a large clipping mask around the edge of the item, along with sections inside this path that were also 'cut out'. I am not sure how, but I seem to have done something which is now stopping me from making the additional 'internal' paths. Instead of these areas being blocked by the clipping mask, they are appearing as paths drawn over the image and not as part of the clipping layer (yes, checked that I was working in the right layer).  I have checked the 'outside' path and this is all connected - no gaps.  I have tried to set up a new file and start again, but now can't seem to make the mask behave properly. Can anyone help?
    thanks
    FB

THanks for that, but to be honest I am a real novice - learning in pieces - so am not sure how to check path modes etc. ..Any suggestions??
Here's a screen grab of the work and current settings:
Message was edited by: fjb3012. When I try and cut out new sections one of two things happen - I lose the image completely OR the new path sits on top of the image, with no clipping.

  • Selecting objects AFTER they have a clipping mask applied.

    Hi There,
What really disturbs me about Illustrator is that after I apply a clipping mask to a set of objects, the program assumes that I would want to actually select that object if the cursor hovers above that masked object if it is outside the boundary of the clipping mask. It's like selecting the "invisible". Is there an option that will allow me to turn that function off?
The logic should be something like:
if object has a clipping mask and
cursor hovers above clipped object OUTSIDE of the clipping mask boundary
    then
do not highlight or allow user to select the clipped object
Likewise, this logic should be implemented in the interface:
if object has a clipping mask and
cursor hovers above clipped object INSIDE of the clipping mask boundary
    then
highlight the clipped object and allow them to select it.
Anybody know any work arounds? Did they address this in CS4? It's really annoying to have to lock and unlock objects all the time.
    Thanks,
    Laz

It's not a problem. In PostScript thinking it's
quite normal that a couple of graphic objects
defines one or more paths, and that a clipping path
is applied to the whole underlying path system.
If those paths or path fragments which are outside
the clipping path could not be selected, then it
would be rather difficult to handle paths which are
simultaneously inside and outside the clipping area.
Therefore it's necessary to have access to the whole
underlying graphic - not only to the path fragments
which are entirely inside the clipping area.

  • Seamless repeating pattern - using embedded images with clipping masks

    Hi forum,
We struggle a bit creating a seemless repeating pattern that includes embedded images with clipping masks applied.
Our pattern is a 550x550mm black square with various embedded inserted on top. All of these images have Clipping Masks applied to hide unwanted areas.
These images are placed so they create a seamless repeating pattern and this includes areas that overlap the square.
Once we create a swatch from this pattern the repeatable area becomes too big as it includes the unwanted areas hidden by the clipping masks.
Because the repeatable area is now too big it's actually not repeatable.
We tried various things in order to solve this issue. Pathfinder/crop to delete the unwanted areas in the images etc.
None of them worked good enough.
We though of just livetracing the images, but due to the complexity this is not an option.
Do we really have to do our "cutting" in Photoshop or do you know any fancy tricks for issues like this?
    Appreaciate your insight
    Kenneth

    Kenneth,
You may try the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
    3) Shudder.
This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.
