Resizing terminal window (solution provided)

Hello
I have an irritating problem using the terminal under xfce4
Resizing the terminal (xterm) and (terminal) running nano results in a blank terminal. All the text disapears.
Resizing the terminal running top results in the window gets bigger but the text doesn't update all the way down. allthough there are more processes running.
If I resize the window before running the programs all is well.
Do I have to provide more information??
Can someone please advice me how to correct the problem.

  • Xfce resizes terminal window by itself

Recently changed from Gnome to Xfce; I've set my default terminal to gnome-terminal, but when I start it, it is started with the normal 80x24 size, but the right border is immediately shrunk (with a 'slide' animation) to make it very narrow which is damn annoying
It is being started with the command "exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator". Any ideas why it would be doing this?

Well, I think it is problem with gtk engine.
you need to have ABS installed and synchronized.
Go to /var/abs/extra/gnome-terminal and copy all files in this folder to some folder in your /home. Then Edit PKGBUILD and delete "--with-gtk=3.0"  so PKGBUILD will look like this:

    rm -f ${pkgdir}/etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas
Then, issue a command "makepkg" and install it with "sudo pacman -S gnome-terminal-3.0.1-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz"

  • Terminal window resizes when opening new tab with cmd-'t'

The simplest way to re-create this issue is as follows:
-open new Terminal window (def 80x24)
-resize the Terminal window by dragging the lower right corner (125x32)
    -cmd-'t'
    -resize the Terminal window (80x24)
    -cmd-'t'
After the final command the Terminal window resizes itself back to 125x32.
This only appears to increase the size of the Terminal window; this does not occur when shrinking it. I'd really like to be able to disable this resizing "feature".
    Thank you in advance.

This is on Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I didn't recall having this issue in 10.5 either so I'm glad to hear I'm not losing my mind.
I'm not running 10.6.x yet, so someone else will have to step in.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg freeze with nvidia GeForce 210 when resizing terminal

    Hello,
I am working on Archlinux. My computer freeze when I resize a terminal window.
To reproduce the problem, I follow the below steps :
1- launch openbox (with tint2, xcompmgr and nitrogen)
2- start the "terminal" console emulator (with true transparent background)
3- launch opera and go to a website which take a while to load (with a lot of data) (I used http://www.lemonde.fr)
4- while the website is loading, switch to the terminal window and double click on the title bar to maximize it
         5- the box freeze
I am not able to take the control back. I cannot exit or kill Xorg / Openbox. I cannot switch to a text terminal (ttyx). No key sequence is working.
Only a hard reset of the box is working.
I have tried to disable the transparent background of the terminal window without success.
I have tried to not start xcompmgr without success.
The problem also occurs with rxvt-unicode instead of terminal.
It seems the problem happens more often when using console emulator based on vte.
vte itself has the same issue.
The only workaround I have found is to disable the harware acceleration with the below parameter in the xorg.conf file:
    Option    "RenderAccel"    "true"
The problem with this workaround are poor graphical performances.
Could you please let me know if you have any idea / clue to identify / fix this problem ?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi jasonwryan,
Your thread helps a lot. I saw a lot of posts but not this one.
This workaround is fine for me to wait the fix.
    Thanks a lot
    Workaround :
It seems the problem might be linked to transparent items like background.
As explained in the above thread :
According to the bug report the nVidia driver is freaking out and creating too many events, which causes an event buffer in Xorg to overflow.  It works OK with the older Xorg, though.
So the temporary solution is to downgrade 3 packages.
    Install the tool to downgrade
    > yaourt -Sy downgrade
    Downgrade
Note the item number can change
    > downgrade xf86-input-evdev
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 2 (xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server-common
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-common-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
Be carefull : don't update these 3 packages when updating your system (pacman -Syu) since it is not fixed.

  • Terminal window scrollback is saved somewhere?

    Dear Mac enthusiasts,
Every Terminal window has a history, which is evident because you can scroll all the way back. In the Terminal Preferences there is even an option where you can set the Scrollback to unlimited, or limit it to a number of lines.
My question is, is this history saved somewhere in a hidden system file or something like that? Or is it only saved in the Terminal process memory which means when you close the window, or worse, exit Terminal, this history is gone forever?
The practical thing I'd like to be able to do is to access the scrollback info from a Terminal window that has already been closed. I catted (unix command cat) a file, then deleted the file, then closed the window, but I'd like to recover the contents of that file in this way.  I know, stupid, but if there is a solution, I'd like to hear it!
    Best regards,
    Jan

    Dear VikingOSX,
I created an account and logged in just so say Thanks! The info you gave is golden! In Terminal I tiped open ~/.bash_history and the entire history of anything I've ever typed in Terminal was there. I edited removing mistakes and what I didn't need (as sometimes I need to scrollback and remember the command I used for specific operations) so that is a small "memorandum" id commands if you will.
Once again thanks so much for the useful info provided!
The history command is history.  For instance:
    history
    history | grep -i cat
You can also use the recall operator and related — all of this is part of how bash works.

  • Urxvt: resizing terminal cuts off lines

I report a bug of urxvt found in the web and that i cannot resolve, i hope that here there is someone who can help me:
    I'm using rxvt-unicode's "urxvtc" as X11 terminal.
If I resize the terminal window before text output has already filled a screenful and the terminal has scrolled down a few lines, the text lines already in the window are cut to fit the resized window.
When there has been enough output (so that the scrollbar is not 100% full), then the terminal does the right thing: lines longer than the new terminal width are wrapped around, and no screen content is lost.
I'm using a tiling window manager, so terminal resize happens automatically all the time, and it gets annoying to lose part of the text.
Do you have any solutions? Thanks

  • Question about connection to network with Terminal Window

    WinXP Pro, SP2, PCMCIA-Fritz-Card
    Hi,
I'm trying to create a computer-to-computer connection via ISDN telephone line.
I didn't install any specific dialing software, I'm using only setting of MS WinXP.
The hardware is working fine, I tested it successful while dialing in to different internet provider.
Now I need to connect to a company network and they have a specific logon policy, where I need to show the Terminal Window during login procedure.
Therefore I activate on dial in connection property dialog, on page 'Security Properties' the option 'Show Terminal Window'.
Problem during dial in: the window doesn't occur.
Second problem: If I go next time to this option, the input value is not saved.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Peter

Please dont be mad on me but I dont see what is in your posting specific for Toshiba forum.
You should talk with network administrator in your company and he should be able to help you. Other way, maybe on some network specific forum you will have more chance to find out what is the solution for your problem.
If you have Toshiba notebook and all hardware you need for connection works well, I dont see reason for writing here.
Anyway I wish you luck and hope your network administrator will be able to help you.

  • Keyboard shortcuts: adding service to open a Terminal window not being saved

    Hi
Objective: A shortcut to open a terminal window with the path of the 'in-focus' Finder window (Mavericks).
    Solution (that doesn't work): Apple Menu/System Preferences/Keyboard
    Select: Shortcuts
    Select: Services
Check box for: New Terminal At Folder
    Close System Preferences
This approach seems to be advised on quite a few sites. When I do it, the service I add simply doesn't get saved. I go back into the System Preferences and look under the path above and see that the box for New Terminal Åt Folder is unchecked.
Any help in being able to achieve my objective would be greatly appreciated :-)

Those things are saved as part of the workspace. It sounds as if the current workspace file has become corrupt. Close ID, then go to your user profile and you'll find the workspaces folder under \Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 6.0\<language>\Workspaces. Delete the "current" xml file for the workspace and restart ID. The workspace will be restored to the conditions set when it was saved, but hopefully will remember changes again when you close the program.

  • How do webpage developers get Firefox to use the windows.resize or windows.moveTo javascript functions that seem to now be passed over?

Before V7, this code worked and did as requested every time the page was run. Now, it does not work and no error is reported. Google Chrome and Internet Explorer are able to produce th correct result.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    window.resizeTo(325,700);
    window.moveTo(1150,10);
    </script>
I have a site where I use window.open to create a login window with minimum chrome.
On successful login, the window that created the login window updates itself to another page. The login window is supposed to resize itself and move to create a console panel to the right of the screen.
I have tried to update the window from its parent at the point of successful login (flagged by a database change, checked frequently). I have also included code in the new window itself to resize itself to no avail.
The new code seems to be failing on both the conditions laid out!

Some conditions were added in 7.0 to avoid abuse of the resize and move functions:
    #Can't resize a window/tab that hasn't been created by window.open.
#Can't resize a tab if the tab is in a window with more than one tab.

There's still some discussion on the bug - including some solutions and troubleshooting for pages that were affected that shouldn't be - and it's being tracked to make sure it doesn't have any adverse effects.

  • Output to terminal window

Is it possible to write chars to a standard terminal window (command prompt) at a given position? And with other colors?

    Hello Valdoran,
since Java is (supposed to be) platform independant, it limits the functionality to what is available on most platforms. Many platforms's terminals support merely the methods System.out (PrintStream) provides. Therefore there is no print(int x, int y, Object message).
Silver lining: The terminals which allow printing at a certain position mostly support ANSI escape sequences ^(1)^. So if you know you're (platform's) terminal supports it, give it a go..
    With kind regards

  • DVD no more and Terminal window woes?

    Two issues here:
    #1
Today I updated my OSX 10.3.9 with the very latest updates. (I bought iLife '05 and the instructions recommended this). After this update I can no longer mount any DVD discs [data, (not even iLife '05 install) movie's, etc.] DVD's do not appear on the desktop, the Finder side bar, or in the Disk Utility window. CD's work fine though. For the last couple month's, (actually since moving up to 10.3.9) movie DVD's have been problematic ... frequently needing force quits of DVD Player, restarting with the DVD inserted to force it to mount, etc. Today's update has killed it altogether.
    #2
After doing everything imaginable (repair permissions, dump caches, zap pram, etc.), I went to the terminal to update prebinding as a last ditch effort to find a solution, but now the terminal window apppears as only the very top left corner of the window with just a close button and enough room to double click it to minimize it into the dock. I cannot expand the window to see anything. I've again repaired permissions, dumped cache files, run MacJanitor, zapped the pram, you name it.
    Summary:
Now I've lost DVD capability (and hence cannot boot from my old 10.3.3 install disc because it's on DVD) and my termial is non accessible.
    The plea:
    "Help, I've updated ... and I can't get up!"
    Help would be so appreciated!
    G4 MDD Dual 1.25ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thanks for the help!
The font issue sounds likely since I also recently went through all of my fonts with Font Doctor and reorganized everything with FontAgent Pro. I thought I had left system fonts untouched but maybe something happened inadvertantly. I'll check it out.
Regarding the DVD, I tried, as you suggested, restarting w/ option key and the OSX 10.3.3 DVD did not show up. I'm wondering though, CD's (both data and audio) mount just fine. It seems if there were truly a hardware issue, CD's would not mount either. Thoughts on this? (I'd just hate to buy a new DVD drive if it's is not the real problem.)
Thanks again and happy New Year!

  • How to use string control as terminal window

    Hello All
I am trying to create a terminal window in my VI and to do this i have a string control and a string indicator.
I want the user to be able to write a command in the terminal and when hitting enter the control should update, but not before! I would
like the user to be able to enter multiple commands without having to re-click the control with the mouse, so it has to stay in the
    control window.
The output from this string control is input to a invoke node to an external motor controller, which replies with a string input to the string indicator.
Tried to do some event case, but not quite sure how I am going to detect only the enter command.
    Any ideas how to preceed?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Tommy
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yeah, in your event structure, look for an event of your string control called "key down"...on the left, there are several parameters coming up (char, vkey etc.) where you can use for example the char to look for char=13 (return).
    look here: http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361B-01/lvprop/control_key_down/
    good luck

  • Keep Terminal window on top (in foreground)

All these years of using Terminal, and I haven't figured this out. Is there a way to keep the Terminal window(s) on top of all other windows?
Or, is there a third-party term app which will do this for me?
    Many thanks!
    Matt

Thanks Camelot - that does help some.
Here's what I'm trying to do. And I'll preface by saying that it's a 12" Powerbook without an external display. Let's say I have an O'Reilly tutorial page in Safari that I have pretty much full-screen. My Terminal window is covering the top right part of this page, and is transparent enough that I can see the web page through it. I would like to be able to scroll through the webpage, but keep the Terminal window in view, and easily mouse over to it and keep working there.
In other words, when Terminal is in focus, I can still see Safari, but when Safari is in focus, I can't see Terminal. (I know, I could make the Safari window smaller, but not all web pages will be readable that way)
Focus-follows-mouse only works for multiple Terminal windows; and you do have to mouse over the title bar of the appropriate window for it to have effect. I did find another utility, Mondo Mouse, which works for any applications, and isn't limited to mousing over the title bar (you can mouse over any part of any window to bring it into focus), but again, you do have to mouse over a visible part of the Terminal window. Meaning that I'd have to mouse all the way off the edge of the Safari screen to see my Terminal again. So it's almost the solution I need, but not quite.
I suspect that I'm just working in an inefficient way (that Aqua doesn't really support) and trying to find utilites which will work that way - it's possible that going to X11 for these Unix sessions would give me what I'm after, I guess.
I know that certain utilities have a "Stay on top" feature, but I can't work out if that's something built into the binary that I won't have access to, or if it's a windowing preference that I can somehow hack, with a "defaults write" command or some such.

  • Error when resizing IE Window

    Hi Folks,
I am a software tester for our company and have been trying
to put Captivate 2 through our certification process. We came
across an error and I was wondering if anyone else has seen
anything similar... We start a new recording session, open up
Internet Explorer and go to a web site (i.e. www.google.com) and
resize the window. This results in an error - "Internet Explorer
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." We click Close and IE shuts down. When Captivate is
not recording we can resize the window without any issues. We are
running Windows XP Pro with IE 6. My personal laptop at home does
the same thing. I've narrowed it down to web sites that place a
curser in a text box by default (the search box on Google, a web
site you need to put in your credentials for). If a text box is not
selected (the cursor is not blinking), then the resize works fine.
Any ideas? I've been trying to work with the Adobe support
and haven't been too successful getting help from them yet. So
until I can end the run-around, I figured I'd post here.
    Thanks all!
    SJ

Hi Rick! Thanks for the quick response! All the computers
I've been using have IE 6. We are not able to upgrade to IE 7
because we know it breaks some of our critical software at the
moment. This happens in Software Simulation using any recording
mode and it I've tried enabling/disabling different options under
"Recording Options". I've also tried different resolutions and
disabling hardware acceleration for the video card as Adobe
suggested in their knowledgebase. All resulted in the error.
I just knew someone would make a comment about resizing the
    window during recording
Yeah, while I don't use Captivate for production
myself, I know the people who do will definately come across this.
In fact, one of the users who came by to try it out found the
problem in the first place. And I found that management doesn't
like workarounds (I tried convincing them) because once we
"certify" it, then any problems become our problem. So I guess I'm
stuck trying to find a solution
It looks like I might finally have another chance to
call Adobe, though, so I'll see if I can get anything from them.
Thanks for your help! And if you happen to think of anything
    else, please let me know.
