Resolution, Aspect Ratio & Black Bars! How to stretch screen?

Hi!
I have a HP HDX 9200 series laptop computer with an ATI 2600 HD XT and running latest Windows 7 Beta and I first noticed that my games didn't streched to full screen when they weren't using the native resolution on the LCD screen (1680*1050), so, let's say, when running one of them in 1024*768, I get two huge black bars at the side! Now, this didn't happen with previouses OSes (Vista). Then, I noticed that the same happened if I went to change the Windows resolution to 1024*768, I would get the same bars at the sides while being in Windows!
I tried downloading latest ATI W7 drivers to see if there was an option or something to stretch the image, but I couldn't find one.
Can you please let me know how to make the screen scale to the whole display, even if it isn't in the native resolution?
Thanks in advance.

HERE'S THE SOLUTION TO THE ATI BLACK BARS PROBLEM
It took months for me to find this on the web, so I thought I would share it here, the first hit for 'ATI Black Bars windows 7' on Google.
1) Open Catalyst Control Center
2) Use the drop down box at the top to click on Desktops and Displays
3) At the very bottom where your monitors are displayed, click on the little black arrow and click "Configure".  Note that if configure does not appear, you are clicking on the wrong black triangle (you must use the one in the very bottom section).
4) This will bring up properties for that display.  Choose "Full Screen" or "Maintain aspect ratio", whatever your preference.  If you are getting black bars on all sides, you are likely on "Centered".
5) IF THE OPTIONS ARE GREYED OUT, as they were when I first tried this, the workaround is to lower your display resolution before attempting the above.  Once you have changed the setting, you can return your display resolution back to whatever you like and the setting will remain as your display changes (movies, games, etc).
Hope that helps!!
This DOES NOT WORK for DirectX9-based ATI graphics devices on Windows 7.  In fact, there is currently NO SOLUTION to this problem if you are using a DX9-based ATI graphics device on Windows 7.
ATI has refused to release any proper Windows 7 drivers for their DX9-based devices, so if you are running Windows 7 with such a device, then your only choice is to install the "legacy" Vista driver onto Windows 7.
If your computer is a laptop, this situation is made even more convoluted by the fact that ATI's driver packages refuse to install on laptops unless you use a third-party utility called "ATI Mobility Modder" to first modify ATI's driver package.   Apparently ATI wants you to get the driver from your laptop manufacturer, but since most laptop manufacturers have not bothered to release newer video drivers that really isn't a reasonable expectation on ATI's part.
There is a bug in ATI's "legacy" Vista drivers on Windows 7 which hides the scaling/stretching options that should be present.  Normally you would find these options under the "Notebook Panel Properties" node of the treeview in the Catalyst Control Center.  They show up there fine using the same driver on Vista on the same hardware, but they are mysteriously absent when using the same driver on the same hardware on Windows 7.
It looks increasingly unlikely that ATI will EVER update their "legacy" drivers for their DX9-based graphics devices.  It looks even more unlikely that they will ever develop proper Windws 7 drivers for these devices.  Instead they are focusing all their efforts on their newer DX10-based devices and drivers.
This leaves users of laptops with DX9-based ATI graphics in a particularly frustrating and stupid situation.  DirectX 9 graphics devices are perfectly adequate for running Windows 7, and therefore they should have proper Windows 7 drivers released for them by the manufacturer (ATI).  I shouldn't have to buy an entirely new laptop just so I can get a DX10-based video device just so I can get the stretching/scaling options in Windows 7.  If this were a desktop PC, I could just swap out the video card, but that's not an option on a laptop.
Therefore, it falls on Microsoft to either (1) put pressure on ATI to fix their broken "legacy" Vista DX9 drivers to add back the scaling/stretching options when running on Windows 7, or (2) add an OS-level user option (independent of drivers) that can be used to control the resolution scaling/stretching.
My specific situation:
I have an HP Compaq 6910p laptop with the ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphics chipset (DX9-based).  I am running Windows 7 x64 RTM.  Neither ATI nor HP supply an official Windows 7 driver for this graphics chipset, and the driver supplied by Microsoft is bare-bones (no advanced options/settings like ATI's Catalyst Control Center offers).  So I installed the latest (9.11) ATI "legacy" Vista x64 CCC package (after using ATI Mobility Modder to modify it so it will actually install on the laptop).
I run a lot of classic video game emulators and older games that use old 4:3 resolution modes like 800x600 or 1024x768. When they switch into these modes, I get huge black borders around all edges of the screen (top/bottom/left/right) and a tiny little viewable area right in the center of the screen.  I have to squint to see anything.  What I want -- and I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation at all -- is for the image to be stretched to fill the screen WITHOUT being distorted to change the aspect ratio.  In other words, when I switch to any 4:3 mode (like 800x600) I expect the image to completely fill my screen vertically (all the way to the top and bottom edges) but with black bars along the left/right edges so that the aspect ratio is still truly 4:3.  This is how I was able to make it work with Vista on this same laptop before, so I expect to be able to do the same thing using Windows 7.  Unfortunately there is currently no way to do that, which completely destroys my abillity to use lower resolution modes comfortably on this laptop at all.
Well you can work past that actualy, but the option is annoying to do everytime since when i go to a lower resolution everything becomes blurry and so on.
Heres what you do when you use a dx9 graphics card.
1. lower you resolution one step down. I use 1680x1050 so i went to 1600x1024.
You should have the black bars lower bottom on the side different to everyone.
2. Since CCC dosnt give the scaeling option under "Notebook & Panel Properties" in Advanced View
you change to basic and do it under Quick Settings.
3. take "Notebook & Panel Properties" on the right side in the box click on " Resize the desktop to fit the display panel" and click go change it to "Resize to fit the display panel"
NOTE.  the trick is that it changes back automaticaly to "Do not resize" when you have your maximum resolution that is recommended by W7 thats why you need to take some other resolution.
I know its annoying to change it all the time but its the best there is right now and atleast you got the games fit to the screen and you can change the resolution back each time but then you got to do the resize with CCC again when you want to play some games.
Hope it was a help to you.

  • Aspect Ratio - Black Bars Left and Right on Widescreen TV

Hi - I have downloaded a couple of TV series to my laptop PC using ITunes. These playback on my laptop screen filling the screen. I got an Apple TV yesterday, synced it with my Laptop ITunes library and there are black bars on either side of my 1080 widescreen TV. There are no black bars with DVD or Cable. The apple TV splash screen fills the whole of my widescreen. I have tried playing with the resolution settings on the TV and on my Apple TV settings but as yet not figured out how to fix this. Any ideas?

bear in mind that tv broadcasts are often stretched/zoomed/cropped etc to make it appear that it is widescreen, when really it is 4:3.
also it is possible that your TV is simply stretching to make it fill your screen.
your TV may be able to stretch it to fill the screen, but the appletv will always output it in the correct aspect ratio.
also it is only recently that most of the tv output has been widescreen. 6 years ago when wire season 1 was produced, 4:3 non-widescreen was very much the norm, especially in USA.

  • A black bar appeared on my screen today and it repeats everything i do. It also underlines on the page what it is repeating. How do i get rid of it? It is driving me crazy!

Hi, by Repeat, do you mean speaks it?
If so try CMD+F5 to turn off Voice Over.

  • Screen Resolution & Aspect Ratio

I am a new user of Boot Camp, running Vista Home Premium w/SP1 on a 3 GHz MacPro tower with a 30" Cinema display. Both the screen resolution and aspect ratio are great with VMware Fusion, but with Boot Camp the resolution is too small and the aspect ratio is not correct (everything appears too large, and stretched from side-to-side). I have distorted audio with Fusion, so I would prefer to get Boot Camp working so that the screen presentation is correct.
Additionally, the display driver selection on both Boot Camp and Fusion seems to be ignoring that I have a GeForce 8800 GT graphics card - is this perhaps the reason for my screen problems? The only other issue is file sharing - is there any way around that besides throwing money at some more software (using Paragon appears to be a viable alternative)?
Any ideas on how to correct this would be really appreciated! (And any ideas on how to fix the audio problem with Fusion?)
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

You might want to install the drivers straight from nVidia's website instead of from the disk.
File sharing? You might as well burn yourself an Ubuntu disk, boot from it, open up Gparted, and shrink one of your partitions by 32 GB (or smaller) and throw a FAT32 partition in the free space. Then throw all the files you want to share on the disk that appears on your Mac OS X desktop (it'll also appear in Windows's My Computer).
Or just use a combination of MacFUSE (http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/) and NTFS-3G (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/) on the Mac side, and MacDisk (http://www.macdisk.com/mden.php3) or HFSExplorer (http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html) on the Windows side. On the Mac side, the disk appears on the desktop and you can access it via the holy Finder like any other disk or folder. On the Windows side, however, you have to access it by opening up the app you downloaded. Haha, Windows.

  • Match resolutions/aspect ratio of two different cameras

I shot a short video with an iPad 3 and a Sony DCR-DVD-403 NTSC.
The video from the iPad is fuller and wider than the footage I shot with the Sony Cam.
    1. I just need them to be the same size as I edit.  So that I can produce this project with all video the same size.
    2. I would also like to know if I can capture the footage from the miniDVD straight into Premiere Pro without having to use a third party converter to rip and convert.  Is this possible, if so, then I am hoping I get the option to match the video aspect ratio from the discs with the iPad footage.
I can't find the answer to these questions anywhere.
    Many thanks,
    TekyJohn

You have three issues to deal with -
    1) Sony footage is Standard Definition, iPad is HD
    2) Sony is 4:3, iPad is 16:9 widescreen
    3) iPad clips are 30.0 frames per second, while the standard for video is 29.97 frames actually, like the Sony clips are.
If both were widescreen, this would be so much simpler....
Do you need to deliver in HD, or will SD be ok? Because if you blow up the SD to HD, it will look very soft next to the HD video. Better to bring the HD down to SD specs. If they were both 16:9, you'd be all set!
However, you need to decide if you want to crop the iPad footage to 4:3, or make the 4:3 clips into 16:9, either way you lose part of the image. Or you could mix them as is, but you will have either letterboxing or pillarboxing on just ONE of the clips and that will not look good when switching between the two cameras.
So...if you want to deliver as 16:9 SD, you could do this - create a new DV Widescreen sequence and add your clips. To get rid of the black side bars (pillarboxing) on the SD clips, use the Adobe Motion control in Effects panel to Scale the clip up until it fills the screen. You then may also need to adjust the clip up or down within the frame so as to not cut off heads, keep subject framed, using Position settings for X and Y. That is the downside to making 4:3 into 16:9, you lose some of the image. For the iPad clip, right-click and select "Scale to Frame Size" and it will fill the widescreen just fine.
If you want to deliver 4:3 SD, then choose an NTSC DV preset, which will be 4:3 and suitable to the Sony clips. Then bring in the iPad clips and Scale down to fit using Motion effect, keeping in mind the SIDES of the video will be clipped off. Again, you can use the Position settings in Motion to move the frame left or right to keep the subject framed.
As for frame rate issue, I believe that Adobe will handle that for you when putting the 30fps clip into the 29.97 sequence, should be ok but may result in a little weirdness in smoothness of motion, not sure. I don't know if you'll run into audio sync issues between the two though??
    Good luck

  • Need resolution & aspect ratio advice

    Hi everyone,
recently I've ran into some problems with Final Cut Express 4.0:
my original video material (shot on a Kodak Zi8) is HD 1080p, and has a resolution of 1920x1080, so it's 16:9.
The first question is about the resolution: obviously, I want to keep the high quality of the video, however, the only setting of the "easy configuration" (sorry, translating from the German program here) that comes close to the original resolution is the "Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60", and it only features 1440x1080. Am I doing a mistake when selecting this one and is my video material scaled down already then? Is there a more appropriate setting?
Second part of the question, which I guess is a direct result of the first part: I've tried to export the video for Youtube in H.264 and various different settings, and I never seem to be able to accomplish a true 16:9 video as the end result. I always have black bars left and right of the picture (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFM3TAbvObw). If I try to apply a 16:9 resolution myself (by taking the width and multiplying it with 1,78) I end up with a faultily scaled (flat) picture.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated,
    thanks in advance!

recently I've ran into some problems with Final Cut Express 4.0:
When you update to the free FCE 4.0.1 FCE from Software update 1920x1080 codecs are available.
See how they go with your camera. Most still cameras have problems capturing directly to FCE as there codecs are non standard.
    Fingers crossede.

  • Resolution/Aspect Ratio of .SWF

    hi all,
i just need to know how the aspect ratio of swf be same when
we play the swf on LCD,Plasma TVs. As currently the .swf changes if
we check it on the TV screen.
Any help on this will be highly appriciated.
    thanks and regards

You will probably have better luck getting an answer in the iWork for iOS community.

  • Resolution & aspect ratio

I am going to take some pictures in RAW format with my Canon 60D to use in video editing. I'll crop my original RAW file to 16:9 aspect ratio and reduce image size to 1920x1080 (16:9) then.
    a. As Canon 60D provides L(RAW) 5184x3456, M(RAW) 3888x2592 and S(RAW) 2592x1728, I wonder which original RAW format I should use. Is there any differene in quality of my final product with different original RAW?
    b. Say if I choose S(RAW) 2592x1728, can I crop it to 2592x1458 (16:9) and scale it down to the proper size to use in video editing? If I do it this way, will the final video file become much bigger?
    Thank you.

Do you plan on animating the photos, e.g. zoom in, zoom out, pan around? Or will you be leaving them static? If you're not going to be animating the photos, you can probably use the lowest resolution--and practically speaking, you don't even need to crop and resize the images externally before using them in Premiere Pro. As of CS5, PPro has much better scaling algorithms and can produce very nice results simply by scaling the photos in your editing sequence. This lets you position a large photo any way you see fit within your sequence, so you don't need to worry about creating multiple versions of a cropped photo, e.g. wide, medium, close-up.
If you will be animating the photos, there are practical maximum dimensions you'll want to be aware of: maximum dimensions in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and CS5.5 « Premiere Pro work area

I have an image that I removed from its back ground and I would like to scale the bottom portion of the image because its to wide but not have that effect the top portion of the image which is the correct width. but also keep the aspect ratio correct, keep it looking as natural as possible (its a piece of jewlery) ? how can I begin to do this.

The area circled in red is to wide (the width) the necklace's width is as wide as the models entire chest. And also the length of the necklace it's to long it should come down to the clevage area on the model/woman.

  • 2008 Pro has flashes of black bar at bottom of screen

I'm getting flash of a black bar the full width of screen and height of dock at the very bottom of the screen.
It flashes quickly twice about every 10 seconds.
I just got the box last night.
    It has an 8800GT card.
Didn't notice it last night, but left in on all night to format a hard drive with multiple passes.
I've rebooted and the condition persists.

Think I have a clue. I have two monitors connected to the 8800GT.
I had the card set to 'mirror mode' and I had my 2nd monitor turned off as I was attempting to clone my main hard drive, no need to burn the electricity.
When I turned on the 2nd monitor, the menu bar appeared 1/4 way down the screen, so the hole screen was pushed down by 1/4 and there was some garbage at the top of the screen.
I took it out of mirror mode with both monitors turned on, and the problem went away (I may have also rebooted).
    Some driver issue with 8800GT.

  • Black bar running down my screen

Just today the below started happening on my screen:
For absolutely no reason, it was just being used as normal and when I moved slightly it just flickered to this and wont go. The worst thing is my AppleCare ran out about 2 weeks ago , I have an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow but can anyone shed any light on this in the meantime and any hints on how to approach the Genius' etc.?
    Thanks in advance
    Lindsey

First I'd like to say that there are places that charge a lot less than $300.00 to fix that. You can find some of them on Ebay. I saw one for screen replacement that was  about $130.00.  The easiest way to test that is to have an external monitor to plug in. The macbook has a mini dvi port on the side. So you need a monitor with a mini dvi plug or an adapter from vga to mini dvi. If it's the screen or as I suspect the backlight, with an external monitor you will not have the lines.

  • Why does my display resolution reset itself periodically, and how to avoid?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro, 1st gen (2GHz, 2Gb RAM), running OSX 10.4.11 (This problem also occurred the same in earlier OS versions). I run the built-in display at max res (1440x900).
Occasionally, like once or twice a week, when I start up the machine, the display will come up in a funky 1152x720 resolution (4:3 aspect ratio, black bars on left and right edges of screen). The entire contents of the screen are there, just reduced into a smaller display area, and the desktop icons are moved around.
To fix this, I start System Preferences, Displays, and click "Detect Displays", and the screen resets to 1440x900. Funny thing is, if I select the 1152x720 setting manually, it stretches the screen to fit the display (or doesn't compress it horizontally) - I can't actually get the machine into the strange mode with the black bars by selecting any of the options in Displays preference - it only happens occasionally on startup.
Any ideas what's causing this, or how to keep it from happening?

My resolution also changes, but it's in windows. OSX is fine, but everytime i boot up windows it boots up at the lowest resolution. Anybody know why that is?

  • IDVD stretches slideshow because of higher aspect ratio

    Hi,
i created an slide show with iDVD 6 and aspect ratio 16:9
if i burn the slide show and play it on my iMac, everything is OK, but when i play it on my tv, all images are stretched horizontally. this because the aspect ratio of the tv is 16:10 (i think)
is there a way to preserve the aspect ratio so my images wont stretch up?
    thanks,
    Dupol

sounds like an adjustment you may need to address on the TV or remote prior to playing the dvd.

  • DVR620 incorrect aspect ratio when recording DVD or VHS

I have a DVR620KU connected to a Sony Digital LCD Bravia TV, Sony HT-CT100 Home Theater system and a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8300HDC cable box.  I am using HDMI cables except for the connection from the "out" on cable box to the "in" on the DVR620.   When recording from a broadcast program or DVR'd(cable box) program, the picture on the TV while recording, and the DVD or VHS recording when played back, have letterbox like bars top and bottom and the aspect ratio for the picture is stretched.  I have tried eliminating the Home Theater system, but that doesn't help.  Other than that, things work as they are supposed to, including viewing a commercially recorded DVD.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It does mean that the DVR620 is not the problem.
I don't have the same cable box as yours. Mine is an Explorer 4250HDC. Even if they were same, however, I believe different cable systems will handle things differently.
I'm on Time-Warner Cable in central NC. I have that big universal remote model URSU-8800L-TWR.
When I press SETTINGS, I get the Settings menu. On the bottom of the screen is Quick Settings. If I press right arrow several times, I get to High Definition. The choices are AutoHD, Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, and Output Resolution. The choices for AutoHD are on/off. I'm using on.  Picture Size are Zoom, Normal, and Stretch. I am using Normal. Aspect Ratio choices are 4x3 and 16x9. I am using 4x3. Output resolution should probably be 480i for recording to the DVR620. Note that on the NBC channel currently there is letterboxing on the top and bottom. There is no distortion or stretching. I don't see a way to avoid the letterboxing.
Part of the problem with making these changes is that they will affect all output from the cable box, so your HD signal to your TV might not be as good.

  • Black bars when AirPlay Mirroring

I have an LH 55" TV that I've connected my 3rd Gen AppleTV to via HDMI. I have the resolution set at "Auto" which sets it to full 1080p - 60hz. When I view anything on the AppleTV it takes up the full screen real estate. However, when I mirror almost anything other than a video, I get black bars around the edges. This is wasted space.
It makes sense if there were black bars on the right and left because of the mismatched resolution. However, there are bars at the top and bottom too.
I have searched numerous forums and found nothing on this.
I am using an iPad 2.
    Any ideas?
    Apple, please fix this issue.

mikecreates, did you find the solution to your problem? I know exactly what you are talking about because I have the exact same issue as yours.
I have a newly purchased LG 47" LCD. I connected both my new ipad and the AppleTV (3rd generaion) to the same router, when viewing AppleTV everything looks fine and full screen, but when mirroring the ipad on the HDTV I'd get the black bars around the TV screen (top/bottom/left and right) when running apps, viewing photos, checking emails, etc. The only exception is mirroring a movie in which case it shows full screen on the TV.
I found a way to get around this by changing the Aspect Ratio to Cinema Zoom 3 on my LG HDTV, then the ipad mirroring looks normal on the TV screen (no black bars on top/bottom screen), but doing this will cause the video to be overscan and out of proportion on the TV. So this is really not an ideal solution since I'll have to switch the aspect ratio back and forth when doing different things (running apps or watching movies) in order to make the mirroring look full screen on the HDTV.
Did anyone know the proper fix?
