Resolution changes in PSElements after editing in iPhoto?

If I edit a photo within iPhoto 6 and then later open that same photo in Elements3 - when I open the RESIZE - IMAGE SIZE menu, the resolution number displays as 72, instead of 300, as it was in the original photo. The file size stays the same, the pixel numbers stay the same- it's ONLY the resolution number which changes, even though I haven't made any change to the resolution.
If I open a photo into Elements which has >never< been edited in iPhoto, the resolution numbers don't change - stays at 300. In addition, if I originally edit this photo in Elements, then save it into iPhoto, the numbers don't change either. The resolution number only changes if the image is edited in iPhoto first.
Looking back, it appears to have happened in iphoto 5 as well.
Is this a bug?<br>

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Kevin is right. It's all relative as to how the info is presented. If you look at each photo in PSE's Image->Resize->Image Size menu window you'll find the pixel dimensions haven't changed as you mentioned but the size in inches has. The 72 dpi file will have a much large size in inches than the original folder. 10 inches at 180 dpi will translate to 25 inches at 72 dpi (10 x 180 = 25 x 72).

  • Low resolution when printing photographs after editing in Iphoto

Hi there, I would be grateful for some advice. I took some photographs and imported them into Iphoto - they are all approx 3 MB. I edited some of them in Iphoto, cropped a few, did a few in B&W. I burned them onto a disc and took them into my local photo shop. They told me that the resolution was not high enough for them to be printed. When I looked i saw that the edited photos had been reduced to around 700KB. Why is this and what can i do???!!!

Burning them to disk via the Share menu creates a mini library on the disk intended for use by iPhoto only. What was used for the prints must have been the thumbnail files of the library.
What you need to do to get the edited and cropped photos to disk is export them to a folder on the desktop via the File->Export->File Export menu option. Use Kind=jpeg, JPEG Quality=Maximum, Size=Full Size. Then burn the folder of files to disk via the Finder.

  • IPhoto resolution at 72 DPI after editing

    Hi,
Can anyone help me keep my high-resolution jpegs at 300 DPI, as imported from my Nikon D80? Whenever I apply any editing changes to the photos, the resolution changes to 72. I've already changed the Photo Book Order export resolution to 300 DPI using PrefSetter. Can I change a setting somewhere in iPhoto to keep my resolution high? Help! Thanks!

    istratmusicom:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Not to worry. It's just a numbers game. A 1600 x 1200 photo at 72 dpi will print a 22" x 16.6" print. If that same file is set to 300 dpi the print size will be 5.33 x 4 inches. iPhoto just chooses to reset the dpi to the screen resolution. That will not affect the printing of the photo in the book. The dpi of any file will vary according to the size of the frame on the page that it's placed in. See this site for a better description:The Myth of DPI.
What was the setting of the export resolution before you changed it to 300 with PrefSetter? The default dpi for iPhoto 7 is 300 for all sizes of books and 170 dpi for the low res warning flag.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

You're really going to need to explain that. What's "USB"? Do you mean a Disk, Drive or volume connected by USB? How is your iphoto set up? What version are you using?

  • B&W images turn black & red after edit in iPhoto '11 v. 9.3

After editing some B&W jpegs, which appear to edit properly, they appear red when next viewed. The thumbnails appear normal. Any edit appears to cause this: simple image rotation, quick Enhance, adjusting any slider. These images edited properly under the previous version.
This only happens with some downloaded jpegs, not with images from any of our cameras.
Emailed one of these jpegs to another mac, also updated to same new version, same result. Both macs (2011 Air and 2008 MBPro) running Lion.
    Suggestions?

    LarryHN,
Thanks. I can see that iPhoto does indeed only edit in RGB as you say, but as a developer and user interface designer for 40 years including a dozen years at Apple, it *is* a bug. The original image does have a valid color profile of grayscale when imported, so iPhoto should either handle the RGB conversion correctly or refuse to import the original image (or at least warn).
The current operation is what we used to refer to as "user hostile." The fact that this is causing my wife and I hours of distraction due to an invisible attribute is cause enough for identifying this as a bug. It is not possible to look at a grayscale image and know whether its profile is grayscale or RGB.
My wife also reports that this worked properly in the previous "dot" release, suggesing that this is a reversion, and thus a bug. I'll be contacting Apple support.
Again, thanks for you help. Much appreciated.
    Frank

  • Photos go black after editing in iPhoto

I recently imported some new photos into iPhoto and edited a few slightly in iPhoto (blemishes). After editing, I viewed the event they were in and the edited photos were black. They are not black in the thumbnails but when I double-click to view larger or go full screen, the edited photos are black. After reverting to the original image of the 3 or 4 I edited, the photos return. Is this a known bug?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Why does the size of my photos reduce to 0mb after editing in iPhoto?

Please bear with me here.  I am a new Mac user (MacBook Pro, 2008, OSX 10.7.5), as well as not the most technologically competent person in the world, so I might need a little patience and additional questions to help me understand everything!
After a recent trip to Europe, I imported photos that I had taken with two different cameras into iPhoto ('09, version 8.1.2).  All the photos that I took with my Canon Rebel t2i DSLR have not had the problem I'm about to describe, in the past or with photos from this trip.  The problem has been only from pictures that I took and uploaded from my husband's Nikon Coolpix L610 point and shoot.  Not sure if this will matter, but the mode I was shooting in was 16M (4608x3456) which appears to be the "best" quality for this camera.
As I was going through my photos and editing them (mostly minor edits, cropping, straightening, enhancing, altering the sharpness/exposure/definition/saturation), I noticed the size of my photos decreasing, as described in the information box in the lower left hand corner of the screen.  With at least 30+ pictures of the ones I have tried editing (this isn't counting the hundreds more that I have yet to start editing), the file size dropped to 0MB, some after one edit as simple as straightening, others taking 2 or more minor edits to drop to 0.  The picture is still there in the multiphoto view (in Photos section under Library), but if I try to click on the picture to view it larger, it just shows up as a black screen.
For example, one picture I have showed a size of 4608 x 3456 and 7.6 MB.  When I did one edit (enhance photo), the 4608 x 3456 stayed the same, but the 7.6MB changed to 0KB.  For others, it will decrease some with one edit, then drop down to 0 if I do additional edits.  Most of my pictures are in the 4-10MB range in their original form (no edits).  I'm assuming that I was shooting in jpeg mode, since that's what they uploaded as.  (I've read on here of other people shooting in RAW mode and such, but I don't even think this camera has that capability).  I read some other boards with similar questions, but not the exact same problem as I'm facing.  I know that there is "jpeg compression" with jpeg files when editing.
So I guess my question is this:  Is there anything I can do to stop this reduction down to 0?  I will only be printing out a few of these pictures, and most in a 4x6 or 5x7 size.  I'm more concerned with being able to post them to Facebook for my family, who lives far away.  When the file size is 0KB, it won't upload because it doesn't even register as there being a picture and if I try it anyway, it gives me an error message, something along the lines of not supporting this format (or something similar, has been a couple days since I last tried).
I read something one of the similar boards that mentioned saving the edited photos as TIFF files, but it also mentioned that that takes up a lot more disk space, which I'm not sure if I want to (or have the space to) do.  (Side question:  If I did check the box in Preferences --->Advanced "Save edits as 16-bit TIFF files, would that do that to every picture in my library that I have edited?)
As I said, I'm new to this whole Mac stuff (been using it for just under a year, given to me by my brother-in-law after my computer died), so please use as much layman lingo as possible!  And thank you in advance for anyone that can give me any insight and/or advice!

None of my pictures that I uploaded into iPhoto are in my Finder under Pictures.  Should I copy and paste my folders from iPhoto into here, in case something happens to my iPhoto program (in addition to backing them up onto an external hard drive like I already do)?
No, that's just wasting space.  A back up needs to be on a different disk.
Your photos are within the iPhoto Library.

  • Saving after edit in iPhoto....

When I import a new photo with red eyes (as an example), I double click to put it into iPhoto edit mode. I select the red eyes tool (or whatever tool is needed), click on the eyes, and the photo edit is done.
When I either close the window, or click the arrow to go to the next photo, iPhoto saves the file with the changes. It invariably makes the file smaller, I'm assuming it's losing some quality as well. Files go from 2.8 MB to 2.5.
My question: how can I change the quality settings in these saves? I'm guessing there is a terminal command that changes these settings, or some other hidden preference, but I don't know where to find it.
Anyone know how to change this?
    Thanks. Joel.
    17 Al 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I thought I was being thick and not completely understanding of how to do this "easy" trick.
I've tried at least 15 times to clear the red from my eyes and as we're told it saves automatically..for convenience.Except that it doesn't.
If I close the pic and then reopen the eyes are unchanged.
Is there something I should be doing?
My email is on OS9.2 so when I switch discs and begin to work it always tries to connect with internet if I ask for help.Shouldn't there be more comprehensive help available on desktop?

  • My photos edited in Photoshop or distorted after editing in iPhoto

ADOBE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIFIC!  I'VE BEEN ON HOLD TWICE FOR 1.5 HOURS.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I NEED TECH SUPPORT - AND NOT ONE PERSON IS THERE TO HELP.  SERVICE IS THE WORSE I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE.

Regarding Adobe customer service and tech support, Adobe only supports the current version of Photoshop, which is CS6.
These forums are user to user forums.  We're all users here.
That being said, as an avid Mac user since 1984, I can categorically assure you that Apple's iPhoto does not play nice with Adobe applications.
Curt's remark about iPhoto hiding your actual images in "libraries" is right on target.  If you can see the file icon without opening the application package (please refer to Apple's documentation for instructions of how to Open a Package by Control-clicking [or right-clicking with a two-button mouse] on the application package icon in the Finder) you are not looking at your original or full-resolution file.  You're just looking at the low-resolution JPEG preview embedded in the file for display purposes.  Attempting to edit or manipulate that image in Photoshop would be futile.
Beside the suggestion to upgrade Photoshop, I can only offer you my personal opinion that, from the point of view of an Adobe Photoshop user and Macintosh fan, iPhoto is an unmitigated piece of cr@p, plain and simple.

Rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How to change aspect ration after editing

The sequence I was editing my project turned out to be 720 but I need it to be 1080. I changed it to 1080 under sequence settings but the video comes out looking too small. Will I have to re-edit my project or is there an easy fix?

What you need to do is make a new sequence, with the proper settings...best way to do this is make a new sequence, add a clip of the footage you want to match to it...click YES when FCP asks "do you want the sequence to match the clip?"...delete that clip...then copy and paste the entire sequence from the old timeline do this new one. Then highlight everything, and REMOVE ATTRIBUTES>BASIC MOTION and DISTORT. If you did any resizing on clips, those will have to be manually redone.

  • How do I change cell focus after editing contents of a cell?

Similar to tab/shift-tab to move focus a column right/left, respectively.  Is there a shortcut to move up/down?  I have tried every combination of fn/ctrl keys and can't seem to find this on the shortcuts for Numbers.

My mistake. In most cases it would do as you said.  I was doing something a little different than what was posted. I was entering the cell, typing in a number (or using option-return) to give it focus, then using the up/down arrow keys to adjust it before trying to break the focus. I guess I never tried entering a number then hitting esc which, as you said, cancels the change.

  • After  editing photos on the iPhoto can i keep the original date of the picture,(when it was taken).thanks

can i recover the original date of the picture whenit  was taken after editing with iphoto.

You do not need to do anything - editing a photo in iPhoto does not modify the original date of the photo - that is a part of the photo informatiopn (in the EXIF data) - the only way to modify it with iPhoto is to use the modify date/Time command

  • Bigger after edit!

pics from nikon D50 imported into Iphoto6 then edited and saved.
then dragged to desktop and opened with gc
when viewd in graphic converter the dimensions are reported as 100cm x 60cm from an orginal size of 25x17 or 3008x200 pixels.
Is this another of iphotos oddities (like the change to 72dpi after edit)
i can not understand why this is happening,
please help i am trying to prep these pics for a submission, thanks

if viewed on any program except iphoto6 the original image from d50 reports as 25x17cm size at 3008X2000 pixels.
when viewed in iphoto the orginal image reports as 3008x2000 pixels, but does not report a size in cm, can not find the button or preference for this. is there one?
when edited in iphoto6 and the viewed in other imaging sw the image reports as 100x70cm size at 6mp.
so the pixels stay the same bu the image appers to balloon roughly 4 x size from original.
as the images have to be 6mp at max of 30x 20cm this is causing me a problem.
You control the pisels - the person printing controls the physical size - there is NO physical size of a digital photo - just a digital size - reread +The Myth of DPI+
a 3008 x 2000 pixel photo PRINTED at 30cm x 20 cm will print at 100 dpi (3008 pixels / 30 cm x 2000 pixels / 20 cm) - while it is digital it has NO height and width - your only concern is pixel dimensions - when It is printed it becoms a physical print with two deminsions - not until then
There are some programs that will stick a set of deminsions in for display puroposes but they are meaningless because you can grab the cornor of the photo and change it in an instant - I photo DOES not do this - you control the display by the size slider in the lower right corner
If they want a 3008 x 2000 photo then you have that and are set to go
But you should study +The Myth of DP+I and understand it - it is important for the future to keep from getting confused

  • Editing using iPhoto '08

I have iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. I changed my preferences for editing from iPhoto to Photoshop Elements 6 and now I think that was a mistake. How do I re-set my preferences for editing photos to iPhoto and only using Elements 6 as a backup? Thanks

I get the same result when editing a file of 5.5 or similar size, it is only in raw format that I loose so much file size. I will shoot mostly in large jpeg size from now on, but I have a photo shoot already done in raw and I am trying to get it to my client.
Yes it does say RAW on the lower right corner of the screen, the file info is also at 13.5 mb.
Ug, is all I can say!
