Resolution of images in PDFs

I need some wisdom about the quality of PDFs saved by Aperture. When printing a book I choose to save as a PDF. If I open this PDF in Preview and choose Saves As... to either JPEG or Tiff I get a file that is 1584x1224 resolution which is just under 150 ppi. Shouldn't I be wanting something closer to 300 ppi? I know I can use Photoshop to import the pdf at 300 ppi and save that as a 3300x2550 JPEG or Tiff, but am confused by how this may affect the picture quality.
The reason I'm experimenting with this is a test of exporting some book pages designed in Aperture to place as full-page photos in an iPhoto book. Or I could do just the opposite and place some iPhoto book pages in an Aperture book.
Can this be done without loss of quality?

I do not have an answer to this question-- would welcome someone else doing so-- but I have a related query: what is the final quality of a PDF when used, in Aperture, as a page or image in a book? In particular, for example, if a page is created in InDesign and output as a hi-res PDF, can it be used as a page (or part thereof) for an Aperture book?

  • Resolution of screenshots in PDF

    Hi,
    I am creating an 8.5x11 PDF document that contains a screenshot. My workflow is take screen caputure > paste in Photoshop (resize/sharpen/trialerror) > save .png > drag .png into InDesign and set it to 100%. I cannot get the screen shot to not look blurry or pixelated no matter what I try. I understand when you zoom in on the PDF the screenshot will become blurry since it is not vector. However, I have the PDF set to 100% zoom and the screenshot is still blurry.
    I have tried resizing in Photoshop, changing the resolution, etc. I can't get it to a point where the screenshot looks decent. Can anyone offer some advice? I am using Photoshop CS5 and InDesign CS5. I also have Illustrator CS5.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

    Sorry for digging this up, but I've encountered this issue recently and found the cause - people coming here from google searches may find this useful.
    If you do everything properly (that is when you do everything as advised - do not scale images, use no compression when exporting, etc.) the image in PDF *is* crisp and properly embedded. The issue lies within Adobe Reader. Allow me to explain:
    Your screen resolution is most probably 96 dpi. This is the original resolution of your screenshot. Exporting it at higher dpi won't do much - it still won't be blurry *only* when displayed at 96 dpi or higher, regardless of resolution you export at. That's not a problem, because 96 dpi is the resolution most displays use.
    For some bizzare reason Adobe Reader has a default setting of displaying documents at 110 dpi. If you go to Edit > Preferences... > Page display you can change this setting to 96 dpi. Your PDFs will look as intended after doing that. The images also display correctly in Chrome's built-in PDF viewer, as it displays them in 96 dpi by default.
    There is no way to fix that. You simply cannot change user's reader settings.
    Also, you might have thought "well, can't I just set the images resolution to 110 dpi when exporting my PDF?". That won't help - as the screenshots are taken in 96 dpi, increasing their resolution will make them blurry. They still will only be crisp when viewed at the resolution they were taken.

  • Can I expect a video to be in high resolution in an interactive PDF?

    Can I expect a video to be in high resolution in an interactive PDF?
    I’m doing a project in which I want to burn a music video and a image portfolio. The images look very good when exported but the video stutters and is pixelated. Can I expect the video to look as good as if I would burn it in Encore for example?

    Thanks for your quick reply. Sorry, should have said that. I'm using CS5.5
    Thing is, this is going to be a promotion DVD with the video and some pictures. I heard about the interactive PDF and liked the way I could build it like a portfolio, the way you can click through the images
    and click to see the video.Everything looks good except the video.
    I tried to do this in Encore but there I got bad image quality and good video quality. In InDesign I get bad video quality and good image quality.
    My video is made in Premiere pro so maybe I should check the media encoder.
    But, with the project I want to do, what program would you suggest?

  • Determining DPI of an image-only PDF

    Does the Adobe SDK provide the ability to determine the DPI used for an image-only PDF? I have a set of PDFs and need to be able to sort them into those that were produced by scanned at 300DPI and those scanned at 600DPI.
    Can anyone point me to examples of how to use the SDK to analyze a PDF file for this characteristic?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    The EASIEST way to do this is to just use Acrobat Preflight - either via Batch or Droplets - to do the sorting for you.
    You can create profiles that check for image resolution and then have the output (which either matches or doesn't) go into different directories.

  • How to add Images and PDFs in MDM iView

    Hello!
    We use SAP Portal as interfase to access SAP MDM repository tables.We use MDM Record Set and MDM Item Detail iViews to display and operate with main table content.
    There is a field in the qualified table, which is the lookup to the Images table. And the other field is the lookup to the PDFs table. Both fields are qualifiers.
    In the main table there is a field, which is the lookup to the qualified table. When we try to add values to this field using Item Detail iView, we get a window, where we can fill all values of the qualified table, except Image field and PDF field - they are disabled. So, can we add Images and PDFs to the table using Item Datail iView? Or what is the other way to add them?
    Thanks,
    Vika

  • Dynamic Images in PDF Report

    Hi,
    I want to create Badges from employee table (ID, NAME, JOB_TITLE, PHOTO). I downloaded and installed a demo application "USING DYNAMIC IMAGES IN PDF REPORT". It works fine with smale images < 20K. I'm getting the following error for images > 20K :
    "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: raw variable length too long"
    it seems like a buffer problem.
    could you pls help to solve this problem
    Thanks,
    Ribhi

    Hi Carsten
    That was exactly* I was looking for. Maybe I should Google more in German ;-)
    The main problem was that I defined my image outside the first repeating group (that doesn't repeat, it's always just one object) - the first group is followed by 7 more.
    Just like the "Name" (that's positioned outside the group in the document header), I positioned the image above the table representing the group.
    Doing that, the "Name" is filled correctly, the Image only when the Output Format is Excel or HTML - not Word or PDF ... makes no sense but that's tje way it is.
    After moving the image inside the group....it works great!
    (One more thing...the image size is fixed to the image you use as "dummy". Is there any way to make that more flexible, because now some scaling happens...)???
    @Trent: That was the way we initially did it, but when the size of the row exceeds 32K...you know what happens.. And even with a small image the 32K limit is hit easily
    The way I use it now (very similar to Carsten's description) there is no limit....
    Thank you all!

  • "View in Place" inline images and PDFs in Yosemite Mail

    I'd like to have the "View in Place" option available for images and PDFs, but it appears to be missing in Yosemite Mail. It would be particularly helpful with this new Markup feature. Any ideas how I might do this?

    When I drag a PDF or an image (TIFF, JPEG, etc.) into the body of an Apple Mail message, I see an icon of that file.
    There used to be a contextual menu option to "View as Icon" or "View as Image" in previous iterations of Mail, but now with Yosemite, I am only able to send the message with the image or PDF file viewed as an icon. As a comparison, when Composing a message in the Gmail desktop web interface, you can click on the Insert Image Icon, and you are given the option to insert the image "Inline" or "As attachment." I like having both options and I wonder if there is a Terminal command or third-party solution to restore this functionality.

  • Error while converting Image -to- PDF and then to PDF/A

    Hi,

    Please give me the solution to convert PDF to PDF/A?

    I've just read a footnote in the API documentation which indicates that the transformPDF function cannot be used for this purpose:
    "GS_Enterprise said on Nov 24, 2007 at 12:03 PM :
    Please note that the parameter "inPdfDoc" for transformPDF assumes that the stream content is an XFA-based PDF, and that it's not an XFA-based PDF with a PDF background (also known as "XFA foreground"). In other words, this function does not convert any input PDF to PDF/A, but only those PDFs generated from an XFA template which does not include any static PDF content as a background."

  • How to set the resolution of images when saving Book as HTML

    How can I set a different resolution for images converted to *.GIF when I save a book as HTML? Why doesn't the conversion to JPG work?

    Hi
    I am running a stand-alone version of Framemaket 10.I try to convert a documentation with a lot of screenshots in it. Regardless of the settings on the Reference pages of the first document of the book, Framemaker converts all graphic files to *.gif, and these are downsized so much that they become illegible. I would like to have them converted to JPG, with little resolution loss, so they are still readable.
    I think Robohelp is too expensive…

  • Dynamic Images in PDF and Escaping Special Characters

    I used the following to create my own PDFs with dymnamic images:
    http://marcsewtz.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html (Dynamic Images in PDF - What 32k Limit? )
    I have installed this application on Oracle's free workspace to test.
    The issue I am having is that when there is a special character in the description, such as <>'"& then the the PDF will not open. I have tried using the dmbs_xmlgen.convert to convert the description but haven't had any luck.
    I'm a complete novice with xml. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Glen

    I have been able to find a solution, but it's not completely perfect. I have changed the "description" field as follows:
    XMLCdata(replace(description,''&'',''and'')) description,
    The characters greater than (>), less than (<), single qoute('), and double quote (") can now all be in the description and will not cause errors. For some reason, I couldn't get the & not to give an error no matter what I tried, so I just replaced the & with the word "and". This solution will work for my needs, but it would be nice to be able to get the & to display.
    Does anyone know of a way to get the & to display correctly?
    Thanks again,
    Glen
    The complete code I am using is below:
    declare
    l_print_layout clob;
    l_xml_data clob;
    begin
    -- load print layout from database
    for c1 in (
    select layout from eba_pdfimg_layouts where id = :P1_LAYOUT
    ) loop
    l_print_layout := wwv_flow_utilities.blob_to_clob(c1.layout );
    end loop;
    -- generate XML data
    for c2 in (
    select dbms_xmlgen.getxml('
    select
    id,
    file_name,
    mime_type,
    XMLCdata(replace(description,''&'',''and'')) description,
    -- description,
    blob2clobase64(image,''Y'') image
    from eba_pdfimg_images
    ') xml_data from dual
    ) loop
    l_xml_data := c2.xml_data;
    end loop;
    -- download print document

  • How to display the Image in PDF report by using iText Report

    Hi
    Im trying to display the image which is very big one.
    This is my code
    Document document=new Document();
    PdfWriter.getInstance(document,new FileOutputStream("imagePDF.pdf"));
    document.open();
    Image image = Image.getInstance ("1.bmp");
    document.add(new Paragraph("Images in PDF"));
    document.add(image);
    document.close();
    But the image "1.bmp" is displayed partially. Its not spanning to the next page.
    Can anyone help me to solve this one?
    Thanks in Advance
    dhilip

    Do you actually want the image to span multiple pages? I am not sure that will be possible without splitting the image; the itext mailing list would be the place to ask.
    You could make the the page size big enough for the image using Document.setPageSize()

  • TIFF images in PDF documents

    Just looking for a short answer, no technical details needed: Is it possible to store TIFF images in PDF documents without losing information?
    Thank you in advance,
    k.

    >On my own computer it seems I only have options to save it as jpg or zip internally.
    That's correct. The PDF specification supports many more forms of
    compression. Than this.
    > Can't find any options to save it as TIFF internally.
    That's correct. A PDF image is stored as a collection of pixels NOT as
    an embedded graphic format.
    The collection of pixels may be compressed according to one of many
    compression schemes. There is JPEG (internally called DCTDecode) and
    ZIP (internally called FlateDecode). FlateDecode is completely
    lossless, so if what you are concerned about is loss of picture
    quality, this is the one to use.
    A ZIP compressed PDF is typically going to be about the same size as
    the corresponding ZIP compressed TIFF.

  • Dynamic images in PDF (Adobe interactive form)

    Hi All,

    I retrieve the image using
