Resolution (pixels/inch) in Photoshop opening window

When I convert a camera RAW image to DNG format (using the Adobe DNG Converter) and open it in Photoshop CS, one of the things I can apparently set a value for in the window that opens is the resolution (in pixels/inch). How can I choose a value? Is this not predetermined by my camera's resolution and then modified by my choice of paper-size when I print the image? I should be very grateful for an explanation.
I am using Adobe DNG Converter v. 5.7 and Photoshop CS on a Mac G4 (PPC) with OS X 10.4.11.

>Charles:P.S. I would like to meet the software engineer at Epson who decided that the "scale your image by an arbitrary amount depending on paper size" option should be called "borderless printing" - I have some mortgage-backed securites I want to sell him.
It isn't just Epson. Virtually all 'borderless' printing engines have overspray. It is to make sure that a slightly misaligned paper does not result in a bad print--i.e. white stripes down one or more sides. In some (very few) printers this 'overspray' can be turned off. In others (a few more) the overspray can be reduced but not eliminated.
>Charles:P.P.S And I'll give the brilliant Epson tech-writer $1,000 for every time the manual mentions that "borderless printing" scales your image
It is another one of those items so obvious to the printer manufacturers that they don't deem it necessary to place in the manuals. Contrary to their beliefs it is not common knowledge and I agree it should be in the manuals.
The 'problem' has been around for a long time:

  • Adobe Reader default resolution is 110 pixels/inch!?

I have a PC with a 15" LCD, and Windows XP.
Operating system's DPI setting is 96.
I've Installed Adobe Reader and the default setting is 110 pixel/inch (Edit -> Preferences -> Page Display -> Resolution)
This setting makes all images in the pdf I've created blurry.
I don't understand why the default behaviour is to override the OS setting which makes images in pdf files look bad!?

    Thanks for the reply.
What's the resolution setting in your installation of Adobe Reader?
I'm actually converting .docx files to pdf.
In Word the pics look great (!00% zoom), but in Adobe Reader they look bigger and blurred (100% zoom).
Then I change the Adobe Reader's resolution to 'use system setting' and pics in reader start to look good too.
I can't force everyone that views the pdf to change the Reader's resolution setting. Whan can I do?

Hi, after installing Adobe CC I tried opening Adobe Photoshop. This failed.
I get the opening window where it says installing plugins searching etc, after which PS opens in full screen.
Just moments after that there's a failure warning, no code number, only the warning that PS failed to open and PS will close.
I tried downloading it for a second time, but this did'nt solve the problem.
Befor the CC version I used a one year student version of Adobe CS6.
    What can I do?

Regarding the Flash Player problem, disable Hardware Acceleration to circumvent driver incompatibilities.

I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files? What can be done so that I can either open and see the layers or how can the sender save it in a way that it doesn't "merge" the layers in some way to just one?

Could try saving as tiff provided layers and transparency are chosen at the time of saving. But it's hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on the final usage. For example PSD's tend to work better in applications like In Design in comparison with tiff.

    Hi Ashley Clavette,
The Initial view setting works perfectly when the file is opened in Acrobat after setting the desired Initial View.
When you upload the file onto Wordpress, and view it on that website in the browser...it might be using a different pdf handler program which might be causing this issue ( it would be helpful, if you could provide the screenshot) , however when you download the pdf again from wordpress server...and open in Acrobat/Reader...then what  exactly happens ?  Does the pdf opens in the desired Initial View setting?

  • Contact Sheet II Function CS - Resolution altering from pixels/inch to pixels/cm

I am using CS3 with MAC OS X 10.4.11 when I create a contact sheet using File>Automate>Contact Sheet II, I set the 'Resolution' to 72 Pixels/Inch however once the contact sheet is created and I check the image size it has been reset to 28.346 Pixels/cm. This did not happen in CS2
Does anyone know why this is happening? It is annoying as I have to manually reset the Resolution to Pixels/Inch for each Contact Sheet
    Thanks heaps
    Di

    Hi Ramon,
Thanks for your suggestion, however the Preferences> Units and Rulers setting does not have anything to do with the Contact Sheet function. The Contact Sheet function itself asks for the Units (which I set to 'cm' as I want to specify the contact sheet dimensions in cm's). The 'Resolution' is a separate setting that I set to 'Pixels/Inch'. I have a friend who is doing exactly the same thing as me and the Resolution gets set correctly as 'per/inch' in the final contact sheet. Their Unit/Rulers preference setting is CM so this proves that it is not related to the contact sheet function.
The reason I don't think that the preferences is the issue is because this behavior is happening on 3 separate installations on 3 separate machines.
I will try this anyway and see how I go?

  • Photoshop cs6 opens on Photoshop extended windows. Impossible to open standalone program. I never suscribed to extended,. Photoshop extendes doesn't appear in my programs list.

I have used Photoshop cs6 since two years without any problem. Yesterday, when trying to open it, a message appeared : "Internal problem in photoshop (code 16). Please reinstall photoshop.
So did I. But now, when I try to open photoshop, a window appears with photoshop extended proposing to go to the net for subsciption. I say no, the window closes an that's all.
I never susscribed to adobe extended programs and do neither have photoshop extended in my program list nor in the registery base.

Thank you.  That solved that problem.  I still can't get Windows 7 to associate TIF files to Photoshop.  It's associated to it in Bridge, but when I try in Windows control panel, the file shows as being associated to Paint.  When I try to change it, Photoshop is not even on the list of available programs.  When I Browse to the directory and click Photoshop.exe, nothing happens. The association doesn't change and Photoshop does not appear as a choice.  So I have no idea what to try next.

  • Photoshop opens a separate window every time i select edit original in InDesign

I'm running CS5 and have a problem when editing linked files from InDesign.
    As an example:
    • I have an InDesign file that has a Photoshop file linked to it.
    • I need to edit the linked file so i use the 'Edit Original' function in the Links Panel - this open the link in Photoshop.
    • I edit and save but leave the file open
    • InDesign updates the change but i need to change something else
    • I use 'Edit Original' again but instead of taking me straight back to the PSD file i was just working on, Photoshop opens a new window that i am supposed to make changes to
    • If i was to make 5 changes, there would be 5 separate windows open in Photoshop
    • Closing the file at the end of each change isn't an option as some Photoshop files exceed 1.5GB
    Any suggestions...?

I'd expect a poweruser to go to their Keyboard preferencepane to enable standard F keys.
When you buy an Apple computer without loading it with software when would you use those keys? I can't think of one application that uses it, other than the obvious things like CTRL+F2 and the like that hardly anyone uses and I'd consider only there for strict keyboard jocks. After years of new computers having to disable the hide dock shortcut for feather it shouldn't be a crazy thing to expect someone to find their keyboard preferences if they demand that functionality. Heck, even Adobe just dropped that shortcut in CS4.
Either that or ask for apple to make 140 key keyboards.

    > but i would much prefer the link to automatically update once changes have been made - as it should.
I concur, and am a little frustrated with suggestions that you should "simply" flip between apps. That isn't a solution, it's what you're forced to do because things aren't working properly.
I see you have been asking in the InDesign forum. I am surprised no one there suggested trashing your preferences. I would start there, I would also consider trashing Photoshop's preferences (I think it's much the same deal as ID, but you'd better check.)
I wonder what happens when you use Edit With > Photoshop. Does that behave the same?
And I can't help but wonder if it isn't something in your system. Does double-clicking a PSD in Finder work properly -- and twice in a row? Do you notice anything unusual at all? What about applets that commandeer shortcuts? Grasping at straws, but sometimes the way to fix a problem is to look where it can't be.

  • Photoshop 12.0.4 update - multiple open windows show wrong image

I recently updated all my CS5 apps to the latest version. Photoshop (12.0.4) is now showing odd behaviour with multiple open windows.
If I select View > Arrange > Float All in Windows (or drag a tabbed window into a separate floating window) the images displayed show the same image or they mirror each other at random. For instance, if I have two images showing an apple and an orange and float them in separate windows, sometimes both windows show an orange. If I click on the apple image, both images become apples. Click again, and the clicked image toggles (so apple.jpg shows an orange, and vica versa). This also affects new documents.
    Things I have tried:
    1. Deleting the Photoshop Settings File.
    2. Running Disk Utility permissions and disk checks.
    3. Booting from a backup clone on an external hard drive running Photoshop 12.0.2 – everything’s fine.
One possible cause of the problem is that I’m not running an up-to-date system. I’m still on 10.6.2 (for various reasons: I’d read too many reports of problems with updates, so I decided to stay put; if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but that could be coming back to bite me). Before I take the plunge and update to 10.6.8, can anyone suggest some basic troubleshooting or repair procedures I could try.
    Thanks
    Jim
    [Mac OS X 10.6.2, Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 x64, NVIDIA GeForce 9400]

Yes! Switching it off and back on again seems to have fixed it.
    Many thanks!
Incidentally, are there any major issues around CS5 and 10.6.8 that anyone knows of? I know that's a rather broad question but I wonder how many people are holding back on earlier OS versions.

  • Pixels/cm vs Pixels/inch

    Hi,
Is there a setting in the Photoshop scripting that determines whether images export in pixels/cm or pixels/inch? The software program that we have written will ask the user for a preferred print resolution (always using pixels/inch), and will then output the images to Photoshop at that preferred resolution. However, for some reason, on some computers it saves the images using pixels/cm. For example, in our software the user may choose to export at 250 pixels/inch, but when they subsequently open the exported image in Photoshop, the image size shows the size as 98 pixels/cm. Changing the Photoshop preferences doesn't seem to affect this in any way.
    Cheers,
    Ian
