Resolution won't stay on "Default for display" setting upon restart

I have a Macbook Pro 13" 2014 edition with Yosemite.
I have a problem in that my Macbook won't stay on the "Default for Display" option upon re-starting... Each time I restart the machine, I have to manually select this option (and then it works fine). Upon reboot, it always starts up as "Scaled". What can I do to make it start up as "Default for Display"?
I noticed this problem started happening a few weeks ago when I had connected my MBP to an external projector. I did have to change around the display settings then. But now that I don't have it connected to any external display, i'd like it to default to "Default for Display" upon re-starting.

Thanks for that... It led to me solving the issue.
If you care to know the full story... Once I did those steps, I realized something important I didn't notice before... Upon restart, the machine would indeed to startup in "best for display"... You can tell by the "high resolution" of the background image and dock-icons, etc... The screen would then flicker for a second and would go to "low resolution". That led me to thinking it was one of my startup apps that was causing the problem... And thus not related to my connecting to a projector like I thought, nor to the actual restart of the machine itself. I then discovered the problem app ("iDisplay") and removed it from my "login apps"... and problem solved.
Thanks!

Hi Abbie. You have every reason to be upset. These issues normally happen in our country. You can send them an email regarding your concern here:

Regarding your battery, you can probably reset the SMC and see if that improves your battery life. Here are the steps.

  • Why is Best for Display setting in new iMac with Retina 5K Display only 2560 x 1440?

I just saw the new iMac with 5K Retina Display. It's awesome! I do have one question, though: The default (Best for Display) resolution is 2560 x 1440. That is the same as my current LED Cinema Display. Adjusting the scale in the System Preferences/Display settings maxes out at 3200 x1800, not 5120 x 2880. I'm not sure why the highest scale option isn't the full resolution of the display. Can anyone explain this or direct me to an article that does?

That got my curiosity too. It's something about the retinas pixel density per inch being higher than other displays, such as a Cinema HD.
The "Best (Retina)" option says "Looks like 2560 x 1440" when you roll over it, but the real pixel density is actually doubled I think, so 5120 x 2880.
The "Looks like..." phrase seems to refer to the size of elements on the screen rather than actual pixels. Perhaps that's what some folks call virtual pixels.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

  • When adding a new contact in address book, I want the default for display to be last, first. How can I make that the default?

I want names displayed in my address books in a formal manner:
    Jones, Fred
    Nixon, Jay
    Smith, Gertrude
and I would prefer that display be created in that manner when I enter first and last names.
    Thanks
    Del

    Open the Address Book
    Select '''View-Show Name As-Last, First'''

  • My screen dims and shrinks with a blue outline around the window.  It won't let me do anything unless it goes back to normal, but it won't stay that way for long.  What is wrong and how do I fix it?

When I start up my screen will rapidly shrink to a smaller size with a blue border around the window.  It rapidly goes from full screen to this smaller screen with the blue border and back again.  It seems to be affected by the use of the mouse.  My mouse was old so I bought a new one....didn't help.  When I have to tabs or two applications open they seperate, shrink, and appear simultaniously on the screen.  This just started happening.

    Put in the correct password.

  • Phone works for a bit, upon restart, phone freezes, won't work for hours.

    Hi All,
First off, let me say that I switched from Verizon to Cingular just to get the iPhone...thats how much I love Apple.
I brought the phone home from UPS and activated it without any hitch, went right through, began working perfectly...I was so happy. Then I turned the device off entirely by holding down the sleep button for a few seconds and then sliding to power off.
Then I powered it back on. It showed the home icons, and no matter what icons I tapped, nothing happened, the home button did nothing, and the signal in the upper left said "Searching..." I get 4 bars here from what I had seen before. Then I reset the phone with the Home + Sleep buttons and it reset, came back to the home screen, and again, no icons I clicked on worked...it stayed at the home screen.
I plugged it in, iTunes opened, recognized the phone, said 'Syncing', and did nothing whatsoever. It sat there for 15 minutes, never synced. I clicked cancel. Then I did a restore. It powered off the phone, turned it back on, and successfully restored the phone.
It was just like before...said "Searching" and none of the buttons, Calendar, iPod, anything were clickable. Nothing happens.
So I called Apple. The guy sounded clueless, sugessting what I had already tried, and then said hmmm...sounds like it needs repair. Needless to say the closest Apple store is 5 hours away and they can't get me a new one til Monday or Tuesday of next week.
So I left the phone in the box for a few hours, turned it back on for laughs, and it began working perfectly again. I synced it, used it for about 15 minutes, and turned it off. Turned it back on, and began saying 'Searching...' like before and it froze up--no pushable buttons.
So I left it for a few hours.
That gets to tonight, I turn it back on, its usable again.
I don't know what the deal is or if there is anything I can do or if anyone is having the same issues. My brother has one, it works flawlessly. It's so frustrating to switch carriers, pay $640 for something that does this.
Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking time to read this and reply.
    Nick

Just noticed...I had always waited a couple hours...but it seems the minimum time before it will let me use the phone isn't a couple hours, but 15 minutes. If I turn it on before that time has passed, the buttons/icons don't work and it says 'Searching...'.
If I wait until 15 minutes has passed, then it works fine. Until I restart/turn it off. Then the freezing and the 15 minute wait start.

  • My print resolution will not stay at 1200 dpi - HP Envy 4500

When I go into my advanced settings, I change my printer dpi to 1200x1200, however, it always defaults back to 600x600.  I have changed the paper type to hp premium paper, but it still defaults back.
I am trying to print coupons from this printer, and when I do, the bar code is blurry, and my coupons will not scan.  I cannot get them to print at 1200 dpi....
    Thank you!

    Hello momfor2,
It appears that when trying to print your coupons, the printer won't stay with the max dpi setting. I will try to assist you with this.
I looked into this, with a printer in one of the labs and was able to find two places within the printer software where the quality of the output can be changed.
First go to the printer assistant (icon on the printer on your desktop)> click on preferences> click on the quality tab> this will allow you to pick tray, paper type, and output you may set this to "best". click apply. Exit the application and test a print. The program software may still overwrite the setting we just setup.
The other place is in the same location as above on the Quality tab, you will also see and "advanced" button, click on it to open another window> there should be an option for "print with max dpi" change this to "yes", click apply. Close the application and test.
This will set the printer to be printing with its max dpi setting, however as mentioned about the programs can still overwrite that. If it does, you may have to look up how to save the setting in the specific program that your printing from.
Let me know how you make out with that. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • Default album art display setting?

Is there a way to set the default song display setting to be the full screen album artwork? I use the ipod while driving and would rather not have text on teh screen, unless I am in a position to read it, if desired. I have the latest Itunes, for Windows XP
    Thank you very much
    STEVE

With the iPod with color display? The answer is no. When you select the larger image, after a few seconds it reverts to the "now playing" screen.
Only the newer model iPods have the ability to keep the larger artwork picture displayed until such time as the centre button is pressed again.

  • Display Setting Problem

I accidentally chose an unsupported display. If I boot the mini it starts up and then the display flashes "no support." If I start up in safe mode everything is very large. I go to system preferences and there is not a display selection.
Is there a way to rest this? I have done the control option P R start up, and it did not help.
I did the 10 second hold down where the computer bongs for a long time on start up. No luck. I'm at my wits end.
    CG

The lack of a displays preference pane when you safe boot is something I have not come across before - indeed, when I messed up the display settings of a mini connected to a TV and ended up with a display that wouldn't sync, I was able to resolve the problem by safe booting and resetting the resolution and refresh rate in the display preferences.
One thing I have found has worked on some Macs where the display settings have been set out of range and the display therefore doesn't work is to disconnect the display completely and then boot the mini. Once it has started up and there's been sufficient time elapsed for the desktop to appear, then reconnect the display again.
What that OUGHT to do is cause the mini to set a default minimum display setting when it fails to detect a display. 640x480 or 800x600. When you reconnect the display, the desktop should then appear at that default minima.
You should re-enable automatic logins (the checkmark in the security preference pane) before you do this since the mini may not detect the absence of the display before it cycles into the user's desktop.
Even if this works, it's of some concern that under safe mode the preference pane is missing. To me, that would indicate the problem is a little deeper than merely preference settings, but this is worth a try.

  • Crippled from loss of displays upon restarting from alt boot drive

    HI,
I Selected for restart an alt internal drive startup disk (previously tested and confirmed working) that I had cloned for a backup.
upon restarting my dual displays do not respond at all under any circumstances so I find myself crippled. They don't even flash anything. Same if I try just running one display.
I've tried every startup key command in the book including holding option, shift, C with snow leopard DVD inserted, and still nothing. I reset PRAM and my startup sound is now louder so I know that worked, also at one point I ejected a. DVD with command E, so it seems it's booting, but where did the graphics card/displays go, and how to get them back?
    2008 Mac Pro, OS 10.9.2.
    thanks

    Update from jeebs 2:
Next morning I try just plain old booting again for the heck of it, and it......worked...(?!). HAPPY.
It went ahead and booted from the original drive I had been using before the crisis (YAY), and now I'm very hesitant to try booting again from the backup (which is sporting an OS version I was considering reverting back to), although that backup drive has mounted and is looking fine......

  • Websites that use java are not working. In the Java control panel, under advanced, default java for browsers "mozilla family" won't stay clicked

I've recently gotten a new Windows 8 computer. Ever since, I've tried accessing certain websites (like www.cnet.com) and can't get the java scripts to load like for the drop down menus. When I hover over them they don't do anything. Other computers I have that run Windows 7 are working just fine.
I've upgraded Firefox and Java to all of the newest versions but it's still not working. When I go to the Java control panel, under "Advanced" and under "Default Java for browsers", the check box next to "Mozilla family" won't stay checked. I'll check it, click "Apply" and "Ok" and then when I open it back up it's unchecked again.
    Help.

  • MBP display won't stay off, wakes from sleep

I have a newish 15" MBP, 1680 display, hooked up to a Dell external monitor when it's at home. When I go to bed I cut power to the display via control-shift-eject, but generally don't put the computer to sleep overnight.
With this new machine, after it's been running for a while (as little as a day, or as long as a couple weeks), the displays will come on again in the night. Once this happens, the displays won't stay off for longer than about five seconds. If I then put the machine to sleep, it'll wake itself up minutes or hours later (generally not long enough to miss a Time Machine interval). The only cure is rebooting.
I tried an SMC reset, but that fix only lasted about as long as any other reboot.
I've since tried systematically removing every peripheral (a USB hub, the external display, any directly-connected iOS devices) and testing display-off after each; no change. I've turned off my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then disabled Bluetooth on the computer, turned off wifi, quit every menu extra (jitouch, Viscosity, Dropbox, Pastebot, Fastscripts, Transmit, Teleport), and quit every running application. The problem remains repeatable after every step.
It's repeatable at the moment — any suggestions for other things to try, preferably short of the reboot which temporarily masks the problem? I'm a little concerned that it's going to manifest at some point while I have the laptop sitting in a bag, which will then cook itself.
I'm on 10.6.4 now, the problem started on 10.6.3.
    Thanks.

Try checking the system logs in Applications/Utilities/Console.app for clues. The entries carry time stamps. Usually a wake event will leave some trace. By matching time stamps to the time of occurrence you may find the culprit.

  • PB G4 Display Won't Stay Closed

The display on my PB G4 won't stay closed. There seems to be something wrong with the latch, as it won't catch (or stay caught) when the display is closed. Any thoughts on how to fix this annoyance?
    Thanks.

Two inches of duct tape or a large rubber band make a pretty effective low-cost fix, but you can also replace the latch assembly — for a hefty price:
    http://pbfixit.com/Guide/33.17.0.html
Note that these instructions apply to the Ti DVI models. you don't say which Tibook you have.
To keep your PB from waking when it opens (it waits until you hit any key), follow these steps:
To set PB so opening the display doesn't wake the computer:
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
Type or paste the following in the Terminal window:
    sudo pmset lidwake 0
It will ask for your password. Type that in, hit return, and quit the Terminal.
To change it back so the system wakes when you open the lid, type:
    sudo pmset lidwake 1
Thanks to Deegan for the tip.
