Resolutions, font sizes all wacky in new Windows7 computer

Hey - I just built a new computer with WIndows7 and an Nvidea GTS250 video card. When I opened up Canon DPP I noticed my thumbnails all looked smaller (than on my old computer) even though they were set to Large. Then I opened an image up in PS CS5 and resized it. At 72 DPI and 15" tall it appeared about half as big as I thought it should it be. Also, the tool bars and all the other fonts just appear small.
I went to the Windows 7 display setup and checked the resolution. It is set to 1920x1200 Dell Ultrasharp 24" monitor (my old system was at 1280x768 - same monitor). I played with bringing the resolution size down and that helped a little, but not that much - then again I didn;t bring it all the way down to 1280x768). Then there is a "make text larger" option (or something like that). I clicked on medium, and then large. It made my desktop icons way big, but didn't seem to change the size of the text within the PS application.
Seems to me that if I size an image at 11x15, then when I zoom at 100% it should be 11x15. What am I missing?

function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

The above exactly explains why you are seeing things looking smaller in your new system.  Because of the change in your output pixel count the pixels are smaller, and thus the things that are a fixed number of pixels in size (e.g., the thumbnails in the DPP software) will appear smaller.
To reinforce what J Maloney has said, you definitely DO want to run your display at the native LCD resolution of the monitor (every LCD has one).  You will get a FAR sharper display at this size, since the pixels generated by the video card will exactly match the pixel sites on the monitor, rather than having to be resampled and mapped to multiple pixels.
With Windows 7, if things are looking too small to you in general, and you can't get used to the size change, you might then want to consider using the Windows Display settings (right click on desktop, choose Personalize, then Display) to have most applications generate larger fonts and menus.  Unfortunately this doesn't affect ALL apps - most notably Photoshop, and some people feel that Photoshop's "standard" size is too small.

  • Font size on my shiny new MBP

    I just got my brand new MBP i7 17" replacing my late 2008 MBP 15". Migration of everything was a breeze (took about an hour for 150GB of data and such). I had to run through a couple of updates of software, and I was ready to go.
    My laptop is connected to a 24" LED Cinema Display through the mini-display port. I do most of my work on the LED display, using the MBP to show email and to occasionally dump an image or something that I need to copy to work on my main display.
    The problem is that everything is tiny on the MBP. It's kind of cool that I can see my 50 or so Mail folders, but they're just on the edge of readability. I've done some tinkering with the resolution (it's set to 1920X1200), the same as my LED display. But the LED is perfect, but my MBP is not. I tried some lower resolutions, but the image was fuzzy, harder to read.
    My 15" MBP didn't have this problem. The screen resolutions seem to match perfectly on my 15" and on the LED.
    There must be a simple fix. I'm not finding it, because I've never had this issue, since this is my first 17" MBP. Any help would be appreciated.

    The current 17" 1920 x 1200 screen has the smallest pixels of any Mac product, now or ever. This means that any graphic element made up of a specified pattern of lighter and darker pixels will be smaller on that screen than on any other Apple screen. Non-adjustable user-interface elements like the menu bar and the text in it, modal dialog boxes and the text in them, standard Open and Save dialog boxes and the text in them, and toolbars and palettes in many applications, are displayed smaller on that screen than on any other Apple display.
    For comparison purposes, here is a table showing the actual pixels-per-inch resolution of various current and recent Apple displays (thanks, Pythagoras!):
    13.3" MBP: 1280 x 800 pixels @ 113.5 pixels per inch
    15.4" MBP: 1440 x 900 pixels @ 110.3 pixels per inch
    15.4" hi-res MBP: 1680 x 1050 @ 128.6 pixels per inch
    17.0" MBP: 1920 x 1200 pixels @ 133.2 pixels per inch
    24" Apple LED display: 1920 x 1200 @ 113.2 pixels per inch
    27" iMac or Cinema display: 2560 x 1440 @ 108.8 pixels per inch
    30" Apple monitor: 2560 x 1440 @ 97.9 pixels per inch
    As you can see, the 15.4" MBP with the standard-resolution 1440 x 900 display is pretty close, as far as pixel size is concerned, to the 24" Apple Cinema LED Display, and the 13.3" MBP display is nearly identical to the 24" display. But they all have substantially larger pixels than your 17", so it's no surprise that you're finding things harder to see on your new screen. Many applications do give you options for increasing the sizes of most things that appear in them, but the only way to make the menu bar and other non-adjustable user interface items that are part of the operating system look larger is to decrease the screen resolution. As you've seen, when you do that, everything gets blurry.
    A pixel is not divisible: it can only be one color or one shade of gray, not part one color and part another. So when you use a fixed grid of 1920 x 1200 physical pixels, which is what your screen is, to try to simulate a grid of, say, 1680 x 1050 or 1440 x 900 pixels by setting your resolution lower, the best that can be done with the available physical grid is to approximate the appearance of the larger pixels in those other grids. The inescapable outcome and, in fact, the literal meaning of "approximation" in this context, is blurring.
    Ideally, you would have looked hard at the 17" MBP's display in an Apple Store and made an informed decision about whether it was going to work out well for you before buying one. It may or may not have been possible for you to do that, and you may or may not have taken the trouble. It is true that for some people (more of them with older eyes than with younger ones), the screen on that machine is just not usable, and selecting a lower resolution and living with the resultant blurring is an unacceptable remedy. If you find yourself among those people, you may have to try to return your MBP before 14 days have gone by.

  • Can't (re)install CS3Web Premium on my new Windows7 computer.

    I have been trying to reinstall many times my CS3 Web Premium on a Windows7 Home Premium HP computer with a AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor 2.90 GHz 64-bit Operating System Model e9300z if that is of any interest. I have had no success, I have used the chat method to resolve this issue and they had me download several patch's that didn't help. I also downloaded the license recovery tool and that didn't help I am still receiving the license for this product has stopped working error message and none of the applications will even open. My computer that I originally had the software installed on crashed and was replaced with the present one it is not networked and is a home-based computer. There has to be a fix for this problem and not just upgrading the product which I can't afford to do at the present time.

    I posted what I did because parsing your posting could lead someone to believe that you did think that Mr. Kazlow was an Adobe employee even if that wasn't your intent.
    In terms of both Mr. Kazlow and Mr. Levine's statements, what is true is that Adobe no longer supports CS3 other than to provide ongoing activation support and even that is normally only for the OS versions for which the product was originally tested. The URL that Mr. Levine points you to indicates that Adobe did do some rudimentary testing of CS3 with Windows 7 and did find that under the limited conditions tried, that it did install and execute with some noted exceptions. That doesn't imply that Adobe provides any official support for Windows 7 with CS3.
    I certainly do understand the frustration that you are encountering; I am sorry if you thought otherwise by my posting. If I fully understood the causes and a solution to the problems you are experiencing, I would certainly advise you directly of such a solution. For better or worse, I am not personally involved in any of the Creative Suite development, testing, marketing, sales, or support groups. I did have the CS4 Master Collection installed on both 64-bit Vista and 64-bit Windows 7 without any problems. One of the areas that I understand tends to be problematic with installing and running older software on newer Windows versions are changes to the underlying security model. Whether prudent or not, by always running as a full administrator, turning off Windows UAC (User Account Control), and keeping my system fairly clean of various shovelware that many computer manufacturers preload on their computers, I seem to have avoided many of the symptoms that you and others seem to be experiencing. Maybe this information may be of some assistance to you. Ultimately, many of these issues are ultimately solved by someone running your system via remote control and deeply analyzing the configuration. First and second level support personnel generally are not equipped to do that.
    One final note. I also use not only Adobe software, but software from a number of other sources. I have learned that prior to buying new hardware or upgrading operating systems, it is prudent to (1) fully ascertain whether my existing applications are current and fully supported under the new hardware and software and (2) as part of my budgeting process, assume that the cost of my hardware and/or OS upgrade also must account for the cost of upgrading my application software as well. If I can't afford to upgrade the application software, I certainly don't do an OS upgrade!

  • I have a new Windows7 computer, transfered my files and settings from WinXP, I can use the web and receive emails using Firefox but cannot open emails. Can you help?

    Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
    Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
    Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
    LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Mavericks After Upgrading to 10.9.2 the font size in the address/seach bar has changed to be small.

    After upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2 the text in the address/seach bar on Safari is a lot smaller.  This is not a screen resolution issue. The fonts in Finder are larger than they were before anoying fix for this would also be nice. It is also not a screen resolution issue.
    I really do not know what Apple are doing with quality control with Mavericks.   The 3 month GMAIL problems have not been fixed with this upgrade and you also have a lot of font size changes accross you whole machine, within mail, finder and safari.
    Any help appreciated.

    Message to Apple:
    Mavericks reminds me of all the old problems I had with Windows before I moved to Mac. Prior to Mavericks upgrades would not change screen resolutions, Font sizes etc.   The GMAIL issue has not been fixed.
    It is inconceivable to me that you could release this product which does not support basic mail functionality for one of the largest email services on the internet ie. GMAIL and then take 3-4 months and still not fixed with the 10.9.2 upgrade. What are you guys doing. The loss of productivity for people is beyond comprehension.
    Can we please get a fix for GMAIL in Mavericks that actually works.

    Dear WD Registered Customer,
    UPDATE: November 1st, 2013
    As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact Western Digital Customer Service at http://support.wd.com/country/ for further assistance.
    The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years. However, solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.

  • HT5661 I just dowloaded iOS7 to my phone. Unfortunately, it does not allow me to increase my font size beyond 12 or 13 size. Is there a way to get a bigger font size?

    Any ideas regarding the font size challenge with the new iOS7 program? On my old phone I could set my font size to 14 or bigger. Doing so allows me to read my text without having to use my classes.

    I'm not aware of this being a enhancement in SQL Server 2012.
    To help you in the meantime, did you realise that you can filter the Stored Procedures and Tables that appear in Object Explorer?  if you right click on these nodes in Object Explorer and select Filter | Filter Settings, you can create a filter to limit
    the list of Stored Procedures and Tables that appear in their respective lists.
    Example 1
    If you were looking for a stored procedure called usp_HardToFind, you would enter the following:
    Property = Name
    Operator = Contains
    Value = Hard (or dome other value you're looking for)
    This would list all stored procedures with a name containing Hard
    Example 2
    If you were looking for a tabled called ComplexTableName, you would enter the following:
    Property = Name
    Operator = Contains
    Value = Complex (or dome other value you're looking for)
    This would list all tables with a name containing Complex
    I know it's not the same as being able to change font sizes however it may still assist you

  • Establishing default Font & Font Size

    Is there a way to control the default font & font size when creating a new text box?
    Whenever I create a new text box it populates with Ariel font size 14 but
    I would prefer, for example, to start with Times New Roman size 12.
    Anyway to do this without having to correct this each time?

    I usually start out by adding a couple of text boxes to the page - each with an X in them. These are highlighted and I select the font and size for each - say 15pt for text and 16pt for sub headings.
    Then I duplicate them a couple of times before entering all the real mumbo jumbo.

    I can't find a way to adust the font size when I am in itunes on my pc. I know how to adjust the display setting, but that seems to be an overkill. I don't need to use the largest font size all the time. Surely there must be a simple way to just adust only what I need to in itunes.

    First,  log into your account on a computer and go to your purchase history and look for charges.

    We have an issue where our font sizes all seem to be smaller in the 7.0 environment vs. the 3.5 environment.  Has anyone else had this issue?  I cannot seem to find a note pertaining to this.  Is there a global setting that can be changed for this?  We have not migrated out templates.  We are just using the 3.x runtime in a 7.0 environment.

  • How to get reasonable font size with higher screen resolution

    I'm using my new Mac Mini as living room PC with 42" plasma screen and tv itself seems to support quite well the 'better' resolutions like 1024x768. Unfortunately then text is too small to read from sofa (which is about 3 meters away from tv). I have switched back to 800x600 resolution where font sizes are almost ok but many programs complaint about the resolution (e.g. Google Earth) and need to change the resolution back and worth to get some OK button pressed which is glumsy.
    I have also found pretty good Tinkertool to finetune font sizes but it does not affect all font sizes like I want. So question is there any better solution how I could find theme that suites better for living room purpose (have not find any theme possibilities for MacOSX). In Linux I could finetune X fontserver, in WIndows I could fine tune the theme used to have bigger fonts, how do I do it in this cool mac?

    I hear you! I would also like to see an answer for this. I am running Leopard on a Mac Mini on my 50 inch display in the living room. I have set the resolution to 1080p so that the video and photos are as sharp as possible. (man the videos look great)...
    But, I have a very hard time reading the menu bar, as well as safari and mail from this machine. I realize that there are ways to increase the font sizes, but:
    1) when I restart safari, I have to change the settings each time
    2) when I restart mail, I have have to change the setting each time
    3) I cannot figure out a way to make the menu bar larger
    I really don't want to bring the mac mini down to a resolution like 800X600 - I think it would look horrible on the large screen.
    What is a big screen lover to do?
    Any help would be most appreciated...
    Cheers!

  • Is it yet possible to change all global font sizes in thunderbird?

    I see there are several posts about the base font sizes in thunderbird but have you actually solved this yet please?

    These are the Options available to you which can increase the font size of '''everything''' in Thunderbird - Folder pane - email list etc. It is up to you which you choose to use.
    '''1. Increase screen resolution'''
    You have not told us what screen resolution you are using. This will effect everything you see on your desktop and all windows including Thunderbird. So if you are having an issue with the idea of using addon or creating a userChrome.css file then try this first.
    Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings A high Resolution will decrease the overall size of everything. If you are finding everything on your computer including everything in Thunderbird is too small, then lower the Resolution setting to increase the over all appearance of size. It is operated using a slide bar. then click on Apply and then OK when happy with result.
    '''2. Use an Addon: '''
    addon will only effect Thunderbird and not other programs nor desktop.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/theme-font-size-changer/
    download the addon to your computer. then install the addon following this information:
    * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-ons-and-extensions-faq#w_how-do-i-install-an-add-on
    '''3. create css file This only effects Thunderbird.'''
    This may seem a little daunting, but it is simple. It requires you to be able to follow instructions, create folders, copy paste and save files. You do not need to actually write code.
    Make Hidden files and folder visible:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
    In Thunderbird:
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * click on 'show folder' button
    * a new window opens showing your Profile folder.
    * '''Close Thunderbird now - this is important.'''
    Create new folder and call it '''chrome''' note the spelling - use a lower case 'c' It should be in the same place as the 'Mail' folder.
    open Notepad:
    usually located under All Programs > accessories > Notepad
    Copy all the text between lines below and paste it into the Notepad document.
    <pre>
    * Do not remove the @namespace line -- it's required for correct functioning
    @namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul");
    *Make all the default font sizes eg:14 px:
    * { font-size: '''14px''' !important; }
    </pre>
    If this proves to be too small you can edit the 14px to say 16px etc
    Save the document as filename '''userChrome.css''' in the '''chrome''' folder. Note the spelling all lower case except for the 'C'.
    Restart Thunderbird.

    Only by dropping the resolution in the System Preferences which has limited results.
    With Safari there isn't a whole lot of choices, just a increase in the text on web pages which doesn't hold and tends to distort pages.
    A better option for surfing is Firefox and the Add-ons: NoSquint and Theme Font & Size Changer.
    NoSquint puts two zoom in/out buttons on the toolbar, you can set a global whole web page increase (not just type) and best of all it remembers that zoom setting for that site forever (unless you clear it out)
    Now the other Add-on: Theme Font & Size Changer, allows you to increase the font size of Firefox itself, so the text buttons, google search bar and URL bar is all at a increased font size, making it easier to read.
    On my 17" I got Firefox font size set at a 24 pt and web pages globally set of a defualt zoom of 170%, which appears to me to be twice the size of the type in OS X.
    I also have a deep blue Firefox "persona" that colors the toolbar area, with white type the contrast makes it easier to read for me as well.
