[Resolved][Cinnamon] DE hangs after installing Applets

On a fresh Arch setup I installed cinnamon. I downloaded the 'Weather@mockturtl' applet and upon installing it, Cinnmon hangs. I can freely move the mouse, but I can't interact with the environment in any way. Everything that was running just freezes.
This happens with other applets as well, such as the 'Better Cinnamon Settings', and 'XKCD Comic Viewer'.

Not all Cinnamon Applets work with CInnamon 2.0, even if they install. Last time I used the weather applet, it didn;t work for me in Cinnamon 2.0.

• My computer slows down and hangs after installing oracle 10g

My computer just slows down after installing oracle 10g. I have a pentium 4 3ghz with 512 memory (32 mb used by graphics built in card). It slows down and hanged even if I agjusted the swap memory to 800 mb. I have two swap file/page file - in drive c and drive d. I even cannot shut it down because it takes maybe 30 minutes just to see the "shut-off/log-off" screen.

Before starting up Oracle, when you go to the task manager, how much RAM does it show actually free? 512 MB is pretty small to run Oracle in the first place-- Windows and Office can use a fair chunk of RAM themselves, depending on which Office apps you are running. You may also be suprised by the amount of RAM that a web browser, email client, and the various other apps that folks generally install can use.

• Safari 5 hanging after install...

Our internet started hanging and took forever to load pages after installing safari 5.0. We took it into Geek squad, they checked it out and said it was a software problem not a hardware problem and told us to reinstall the operating system. We did and everything worked fine (until we did the updates that included safari 5.0) then same problem again. Slow page loading...so We reinstalled the operating system without doing safari 5.0 update (currently running safari 4.02) and internet is fine but we cannot log onto the iTunes store because it says that we need safari 4.03 or higher. Tried to download safari 4.05 but it said that I could not install because I do not have Mac OS X 10.6!! So does having Mac OS X 10.6 keep you from having hang up issues with Safari 5.0?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
First, right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder then click "Get Info". That should tell you exactly which version of Safari you have installed.
Check to see if you have third party Safari plug-ins or input managers installed. Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Install the v10.5.8 Combo Update This includes updates that were not part of the original v10.5.8 update.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
And repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
One more thing. Open System Preferences/Accounts the select the Login Items tab. If you have any apps listed there to launch when you startup your Mac, delete them. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Remove any items there also.

• Thunderbird hangs after installing Lightning

Operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. Thunderbird version is 31.3.0. Add-ons installed are Google Tasks Sync 0.5.1, Lightning 3.3.1 and Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.3. After installing the latter two extensions, Thunderbird opens but then immediately hangs up. Using safe mode, I have been able to launch Thunderbird and use email with the extensions disabled. Would appreciate your help.

I tried with another slot (pci 3 slot), same issue. I try to assign a irq 0 to pci slot 4 which shared by usb host controller and other usb root hub. I tried with different irq also (irq ) which shared by my geforce, audigy and another i don't remember.
IRQ available for slot 4 or all is irq 9, irq 0, irq . onboard soundcard disabled. Default xp driver installed previously for creative onboard soundcard.
I didn't try the new drivers provided on creative website. i going to do that today and post again the results.
Many posting the similar problems in this forum, is there any defined document or knowledgebase which clearly give some directions to follow to fix the issue.
Thanks in advance

• Multiple Safari hangs after installing Snow Leopard

I had 5 Safari hangs today within hours...never had one since I bought the machine in June 2009 with Leopard installed...Since the SL upgrade CD, I have had 2 system freezes that result in a complete shutdown to clear and multiple Safari hangs that I able to recover with a force quit..My daughter in college with the same machine reported that she had 3 system freezes in one day since SL...My wife who did NOT yet install the SL upgrade and is now blissfully having no problems at all and does not want to install the new OS (again same machine type, We bought 3of them in June after the announcement). I hope that this gets debugged and fixes provided...

Hi,
Mac OS X 10.5: What you can do if Safari quits unexpectedly
That links is for 10.5 but the trouble shooting will work in 10.6 also.
For system freezes try maintenance.
Maintaining Mac OS X
On the Macs you upgraded to SL, did you check to see if you had 3rd party software installed that might not be compatible? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258
Did you repair permissions after the upgrade?
Quit any open applications/programs. • Time Machine - Airport Disk Hangs after installing 10.5.6 update

The 10.5.6 update basically made my Time Capsule and Airport Disk connected to the Time Capsule unusable. I've repaired the permissions as suggested in other posts - this did not fix the problem.
I was unable to perform any incremental backups initially after the 10.5.6 update, so I archived my sparsebundle and created a new one by doing a full fresh backup - which completed successfully. However, after the backup, I was unable to connect to the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to the Time Capsule via Finder - when trying to connect my computer hangs and I'm forced to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND the Time Capsule, if I just restart one or the other the problem persists. If I let the connection attempt run long enough I get an "Error Code: -8072" message and still have to do a hard restart. After the hard restart of my computer and Time Capsule I'm able to connect to the Time Capsule and the USB drive connected to Time Capsule just fine. However, once the backup runs again - the same problem returns, I can no longer access the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to Time Capsule and have to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND Time Capsule. This 10.5.6 update has been havoc, anyone have the same troubles or ideas for resolving this. Before updating to 10.5.6 my system was working flawlessly with Time Capsule and the connected USB drive.

You might to well to repost in the TimeCapsule forum here:

• Hanging after installing avast andspy doctor did all the troubleshooting

I have updated Firefox and all plug-ins. Installed Avast and spy doctor now having all sorts of hang ups. did all the troubleshooting to no avail.

johnodd4, I appreciate your time and thanks for responding.
I'm so frustrated as I'm dealing with multiple issues here.
Here's the RAM purchased:
512MB Apple iMac/iBook/PowerBook PC133 1" SDRAM SODIMM (p/n MX-M8631G/A) $89.98
I'm concerned that the RAM received doesn't look like the RAM module advertised and when I google the SKU number I'm taken to an ASUS notebook page on MemoryTens own website. So I don't even know if the wrong RAM was accidentally sent out.
MemoryTen Support ask me to check the RAM is seated properly. Well it was and installing that new RAM has caused to iBook to display the Flashing Folder/?.
The iBook still failed to boot when I replaced the original Apple Ram module AND when I removed that and tried booting with just the onboard 64mb RAM, the boot process didn't proceed past the Flashing Folder/?.
So ... the RAM is going back to MemX BUT I still have this iBook that was working perfectly before but now is very very sick!
I have zeroed the HD using Disc Utility/Target Disc Mode and when I place the Panther disc in the tray and hold the Option key at startup, then select the Panther Disc and click on the forward arrow ... it just hangs for hours (actually I gave up after 3hrs).
I have to reset the PMU everytime I want to boot up and try something new.
I've been frantically researching this and I only have the Panther disc (Retail Version) which was bought recently and used to successfully upgrade to OS from 9.2.2 to 10.3.9 (and I did apply the 4.1.7 Firmware Upgrade)

• My Mac Pro is hanging after installing Mountain Lion

My Mac Pro is hanging and it started not long after I installed Mountain Lion. It seems to be related to Contacts in that it is constantly trying to sync with iCloud. It becomes unresponsive and when I force quit, other apps start going down. Eventually Mail hangs and I have to hit the power button and force a restart of the Mac Pro. It also brings down my DSL connection which runs through an Airport Extreme. Has anybody had similar experiences? Contrary to what it might say in my profile, I'm running a 2.8 Ghz Quad Core Mac Pro and 10.8.2.

Welcome. If you search for "Mountain Lion freeze" you will see you are NOT alone. But as far as I know there is no solution.

• PowerBook G4 hangs after install/reboot with Combo Mac OS X 10.5.8 update

I've got a Titanium PowerBook G4 1GHz. It had Mac OS X 10.5.4 installed.
Then I went to Software Update and it downloaded the Combo software 10.5.4 and after it rebooted, it is stuck at "Installing 2 items, Configuring installation."
You can see the progress bar pulsating but it's stuck and I dont hear any hard drive activity. I had to hard power down and got back in and did Software Update again and after it rebooted, same issue.
Whats up with that?

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• ITunes 12.1.2 hanging after installing Yosemite 10.10.3

I updated to Yosemite 10.10.3 and am running iTunes 12.1.2 on my mid-2011 iMac 27".  I can log into the iTunes store (albeit VERY slowly) and when I attempt to add an allowance, iTunes hangs every time during the "message" section.  I have rebooted the iMac multiple times, have closed all apps except iTunes, and it hangs every time at the same place.  I have filed multiple crash reports to Apple, each of which describe the event as a "hang."
Anyone else experiencing this and have a work around?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Also iTunes TV Programmes are affected - an Episode watched today before the Update was playing just fine.
After the Update, the Program plays for 4sec and then stops and blends in the HDCP Error Message.

• 10.4.7 Hanging after install

Hows this for issues, I installed the update on both my iMac and my MacBook, and on both I recieved a message saying that there was an error during install. Afterwhich I could not open any of my Apps and when I did try to reboot, my system hung on shutdown and after about 30 minutes I manually cut the machine off. When I booted the machine up all I get is the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning thinker thing. I let that sit there for another 30 minutes, and cut the machine off. Now each time I attempt to boot I get nowhere, just the Apple Logo and the spinning thing. This happend on both my iMac and my MacBook.
So for now I'm stuck on a PC waiting for my Macs. I never thought I would be writing that.
Anyone have any ideas??

Same thing for me. I booted to install disc and repaired the drive with Disk Utility. Still booted to grey screen with the spinning gear. I ended up having to do an Archive and Install preserving. When I got back up to 10.4.4 which came wiht my Core Duo iMac I got the same error while installing using Software Update. The app said there was an error and could not complete the install and that's where I'm sitting now. I'm anxious to restart the computer for fear of the grey screen again. I'm downloading the 10.4.7 Combo Intel update right now to see if I can run that rather than software update.
Now, question for anyone who has this same problem. I know I tried installing Windows using third party software in the past. Now Boot Camp is out and that is working fine for me. I'm just curious if anyone else having this same problem had tried installing Windows by any means other than Boot Camp before.
Thanks,
