That file does not exist on my system. /var/log/boot is apparently not up to date, but here is the most recent boot that was logged:

  • Intel iMac not starting...please HELP!!!

    Hey all,
Well I just arrived to my new dorm room in college with my one week old iMac and I'm encountering some serious problems....
I plugged the computer in while it was on my desk, with other hardware attached into a surge protector and it worked fine for about two days. Today I recieved some new furniture so I had to unplug the computer to move things around....I unplugged it and placed it flat (screen side up) on a pillow.
I plugged it back in with a new surge protector, connected the hardware and pressed the button...didn't start. The printer, the speakers, everything else had power so it wasn't a faulty power strip...just the computer wouldn't start. I then did the following:
    1. Tried different connections on the same surge protector
    2. Switched back to the old surge protector
    3. Plugged the computer w/o external devices into the wall directly
    4. Tried it as described above into a different wall outlet
And nothing has worked. I'm going to call Apple in the morning, but as you can imagine with the year starting this is the last thing I need. I'm using my old G3 iBook at the moment to get by, but what has happened to my brand new iMac? Thanks for your help

DIRECTLY from the iMac Help site:
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMC may resolve it. The SMC controls several functions, including:
    * Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.
    * Handling system resets from various commands.
    * Controlling the fans.
Note that resetting the SMC does not reset the PRAM. Resetting the SMC will not resolve issues in which your computer is unresponsive—in these situations, restarting your computer will generally suffice. If your computer isn't responding, perform these steps one at a time, in this order, until the issue has been resolved:
    1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape).
    2. Restart (Control-Command-Power).
    3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds).
Resetting the SMC can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so forth. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMC. To reset the SMC on an iMac (Early 2006), iMac (Mid 2006), or Mac mini (Early 2006):
    1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
The iMac (Early 2006) and later models do not have a button on the main logic board for resetting the SMC, which eliminates the need to remove the computer's cover to reset it (as required for some earlier models).

  • Unable to start MPD as a daemon in rc.conf

For some reason, MPD is unable to start as a daemon listed in rc.conf. I have tried running it as a background also and no go. MPD goes after ALSA, so I don't know what else is missing.
Also, I cannot start mpd as root after logging in immediately after my system boots up. It just tells me it fails.
However, I can start MPD after I log-in as a normal user and su into root, then manually typing /etc/rc.d/mpd start.
Could it be that it is unable to find my music database during its attempt to start as a daemon in rc.conf? (because my music directory is in an NTFS partition, which is not listed in fstab because it is automatically mounted by hal)
Could it be that I set "user" in /etc/mpd.conf as "mpd" that it is unable to start it as root?
    What could be the culprit?
Last edited by orv (2007-12-24 19:22:49)

Yup. MPD works and plays my music. It just wont start up as a daemon, but I know why now.
The place where my music is located (/dev/sdb2) is an NTFS partition which isn't mounted by the time I get to the login prompt. This is because it is automounted AFTER i log-in a user account in which HAL automounts that drive.
Adding an entry in FSTAB and not relying on automount by HAL solves the problem because now when I start it as a daemon, it can actually find my music library.

    Hi,
Not so much of a problem but, bluetooth daemon does not start on boot up.... sure I have it in daemons [no @!] but when you run hcitool scan you get no device found..

we havent resolved the issues we have with RDA.
First when we opened a msg with SAP they asked to apply these notes:
1048864 - RDA daemon does not close empty requests
    1042790 - P14: Real-time: QM action for real-time PSA request
Which fixed most of issues and but the delta queue wasnt being deleted in source system even after the data is loaded and request closed. Now they asked us to apply other note 1089041 - RDA InfoPackage does not delete delta queue which is supposed to be part of SP16. And guess what we patched our system with SP16 and Now the RDA doesnt work at all :). The RDA is active but the daemon never wakes up - So opened anyother note with SAP. And pretty soon I hope I will be making good friends with the SAP consultant I'm working with all the messages going back and forth.
Let us know if you found a magical way to make ur RDA work. I guess we decided to hold on RDA till starts behaving stable (may be SP53- you never know). And I would personally like to be able to close the request in 30mins and not 1hr default it has. I tried playing around with the FM's - no luck.

  • Daemon not starting

    a) Created DTP for RDA..
    b) Created infopackage by clicking RDA and assigned ..
    c) Created Daemon
    d) asssigned Damon to the package and atttached DTP..
    e) when said Start all infopackages from the Daemon.... it is not starting and the request is going to Red.
Inititally it was green after some time., it has become red and now it is inactive. Can anyone tell me the reason.. I deleted everything and tried to created once again DTP and infopackage and Daemon.. but no use...
    Eagerly waiting for reply

  • Tor daemon will not start up on boot...

Here's the appropriate line from rc.conf, but it will not start unless I enter it manually from the command line. I'm not even sure where else to look or debug, as I've never had any troubles with daemons before this.
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng cpufreq dhcdbd networkmanager tor polipo crond bluetooth cups hal fam alsa)
And as a related but less important question, does anyone know where tor logs are located by default? I tried setting up a relay but could not verify that it worked because I don't know where the logs are kept.

I'm afraid I don't really know what you mean. Care to give an example?
Anyways, I've found an error when I simply run 'tor' which could be the reason it does not start automatically. This error does not appear when I run 'sudo /etc/rc.d/tor start' (unless it is redirected to the log files instead, which I still haven't found). The error is:
Mar 06 13:17:58.439 [warn] Error setting to configured GID: Operation not permitted
Mar 06 13:17:58.439 [warn] Failed to parse/validate config: Problem with User or Group value. See logs for details.
As far as I can tell, nothing should be wrong at all with the groups and it is all set according to the tor documentation. This is really starting to bother me...

  • Firefox not starting after update to 3.6.11 from 3.6.10 on vista platform. XUL error report. Uninstall including removing mozilla items in regedit or system restore does not resolve issue. XUL error still reappears after reinstall ? in English

Problem exists on my HP C0mpaq 6720s , Vista operating system.
System restore, restored to version 3.6.3 instead of 3.6.10 . This did not start either. Previously, I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to remove all Mozilla items, checked regedit and removed all Mozilla folders, then reinstalled 3.6.11 from your website. Mozilla would not start and XUL error stated 1.9.2.10 followed by min 1.9.2.11 and max 1.9.2.11 . This was the same error report that appeared after the automatic update.
So I am at a loss and without Mozilla .

I have successfully resolved this issue on my PC by allowing updater.exe through the firewall. This updater.exe is located in the folder where your Mozilla Firefox was installed. The default folder is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updater.exe"

    Dear,
After migrating a virtual machine that hosts the CiscoworksLms 4.0, Daemon Manager service does not start.
From what we see this error seems to be a problem in the license.
    Following is the error:

I have already entered in the User casuse group of administrators and reset the password but no use Daemon Manager service not up
    Thanks for help!

    Hi,
From the attached screen shots, I can see the startup type are Incorrect for Many services ,kindly correct their status...
please see below the correct startup type
configuration for LMS Services. As you notice you see that only the
"CiscoWorks Daemon Manager" (except the RSH/Syslog/TFTP services) is set to
start automatically, the Daemon Manager is responsible for starting all the
other CiscoWorks LMS services in a specific order.
So by having the below configuration, LMS will start correctly by itself
after Windows successfully reboots. In fact having any other start up
configuration will cause LMS to not start, because if one of the LMS
services starts before it dependent services, it will not come up and all
subsequent services will fail to start as well.

powerbook g4 - does not start up...it shows kernel panic screen...how do i fix/resolve this problem?

In the overwhelming majority of cases, kernel panic indicates a severe hardware problem. Braby and Allan pointed to useful things. If you can boot from CD / DVD and reinstall without any kernel panic, then may be a software problem, but this is less probable. You must check, anyway.
If you have a 2nd mac around and a firewire cable, you may try to restart the ill mac in target mode and connect it to a healthy mac to see whether it may be used in target mode.

  • POP3 and IMAP daemons not starting?

Ahoy, my mail server's been running fine for months now, but this morning it wasn't working.
On closer inspection, Server Admin says that POP and IMAP are disabled. In the settings they are definatly enabled.
I tried restarting the server, and I also updated to 10.4.8, but still nothing.
Does anyone know how I can get an error log or something that might tell me why they're not starting?
    thanks!

    Fixed it.
Apologies for the false alarm. I looked at the logs and config and thought 'This looks messy. I need to look cool in front of these guys, I should clear this up.'
So I restored the default main.cf file and reconfigured my mail server from scratch, and now it's working...
    Thanks anyway!

Don't ever try to solve problems on the evening. The master channel was mutted after the update because my soundcard is not well recognised, that's all. Got to do some tricks and that will work fine.
[Edit 2] In the end it seems that I was using a deprecated asoundrc.conf in /etc.
How exactly did you fix it?  I am getting no sound (tray icon flickers) when I attempt to configure and test speakers/sound devices.  I even clean installed a few times just to make sure that I didn't mess something up.
There are no pacnew files either...
look into /etc/pluse/ dir, there should be default.pa and default.pa.pacnew. use the pacnew (mv default.pa.pacnew dafault.pa) or merge it somehow. "pulseaudio --start" to test if it's starting. if it does, reboot and everything should be working again...
Thanks, thats exactly where I looked once it updated and there was no pacnew.  This is so confounding because I've dealt with pacnew files before and it has never been an issue.  I'm formatting again just to make sure.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • [NOT SOLVED] Gnome will not start

I'm editing this original message by way of summing up so that anyone coming here with a similar problem will know what to expect if they read further:
I believe the reason Gnome would not start on the machine in question was that it made too many demands on the available hardware (see desm0te's comments below).
For this reason I decided to switch to LXDE as Desktop Environment which works well on the restricted hardware. I did not investigate the Gnome related problem any further.
    The original message follows:
After a successful installation of the basic command-line Arch according to the Beginner's Guide, I went on to install Gnome according to instructions in the Wiki.
I Did not want Gnome to start automatically but only when I type in the command startx.
This it does, but all I get is the nice blue "curtain" background - no black bar at top of screen with Actions, date , name etc...
    and no cursor.
One funny thing was - this afternoon while I was concentrating on another machine - the black bar suddenly appeared (apparently for no reason) showing the date and my name but with the X cursor
from the X11 environment. However as soon as I moved this cursor to the bar and clicked, both dursor and bar disappeared never to return .
I decided to redirect the stderr of startx to a file in the hope that it would give a clue as to what was wrong.

    desm0tes:
To take your points one by one:
    1. I am now quite happy with LXDE too. The problems I mentioned last night seem to have gone (???!!!) and I can just start LXDE from my user account. Maybe later, I'll realize what I was doing wrong or rather what I did to make it work... . Now I just type:
    startx
    having put:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    in .xinitrc.
    2. Thanks for the tip about yaourt. I shall try that sooner or later.
    3. Well as I said - I don't understand what I was doing wrong -  which makes me feel a bit stupid and is rather annoying but looking on the bright side it's fine to be able to start-up, have a legible screen and logout successfully - which I couln't do before. I now have to figure out how to expand the contents of LXDE a bit but that's the fun of it!
LXDE starts up nicely with minimal possibilties but I can change look & feel and customize the panel settings.
    "Menu" contains:
        Accessories:
            File Manager
            Image Viewer
            LXTerminal
            Leafpad
            Xarchiver
        Internet:
            Avahi SSH Server Browser
            Avahi VNC Server Browser
        Office:
            ePDFViewer
        System Tools:
            Avahi Zerconf Browser
            Task Manager
        Preferences:
            Customize Look and Feel
            Monitor Settings
            OPenbox Configuration Maanger
            Preferred Applications
        Run
        Logout
All of these start up OK and work, on cursory examination, except the Avahi Browsers which I don't understand and which appear to do nothing as no window appears on screen.
    4. I'm not quite sure I can yet see the use of a login manager such as SLiM, since I seem to get on quite nicely without it but since I've heard it mentioned a lot I'm sure I'm just missing the point.

  • Energy saver not starting the MM at times, holds the log a clue?

I have a MM as a server, normal OS, that sometimes does not start in the morning.  It is set to shut down at 23.00 and does so all evenings at 23.10.  However this morning (01-10-2011) it did not come on again and I was looking through the log and found some strange stuff.
    like:
    29/09/2011 12:38:06 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker[848] FolderManager: Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/dev/null/' path=/dev/null/ err=-36 uid=505 euid
    and
29/09/2011 12:38:11    /Applications/Utilities/QuickTime Player 7.app/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime Player 7[262]    DTUninstall(), the current deferred task 0x267454 being removed is also currently executing its dtAddr routine, so unexpected things may result  ( Radar #4555679 ).
    and
    29/09/2011 23:30:02    mds[66]    (Error) Task: QueryClose failed (-1) for store <MDSStoreToken: 0x411050>{storeID:0x6b000010 registered:YES private:NO age:14h18m40s uuid:5D7AEDC7-4772-4AB5-A1D9-5C5AF631FBFF machPort:0x00004007}
Now if it hangs for some reason I have a cron script that kills all at 23.30.  However I installed this via Cronnix and just checked and it is no longer there in Cronnix.  however the machine turns of at 23.30, so this puzzled me too. Is there a way to see in cron if there is a script there?  And remove it?
Two questions, is there anything in the log (I am not an expert here) that should not be or could cause this.
second one, if i do a cron killall, would this effect the energy control panel and for the machine not to start the next morning?
    Looking forward to your wisdom.
