[Resolved] Failed Install

Hi,
When I install the Oracle database 10g Client Release2 (10.2.0.1.0) 32-bit, I get and error from Windows stating that the "Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps protect against damage from viruses...." and then the install stops.
I went ahead and selected "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" and ran the installation again but the install still fails.
Am I missing something with the install?
Thanks for reading my post.

  • Current progress in fixing 10.4.6 failed install

I'm now making some progress in understanding the failiure, however it's leaving me with some BIG questions as to the checks apple put in.
This still hasn't fully worked for me! This is also an abbreviated account, please don't try unless your familiar with a shell prompt! Once I know what's going on better, I'll expand.
I've so far done the following (appologies for any typos, I7m typing on a tiny pda keyboard).
    booted from dvd
    opened a terminal.
    noted chroot /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/ /bin/bash seg faults
created a dir fakesys at the root of the hd
copied /var /bin /sbin and /usr from the dvd dir into fakesys
    made a tmp dir there
copied the pkg dir for the upgrade which had been moved out of trash just before I rebooted to the fakesys dir as well as stuff like gunzip from /usr/bin on the hd.
    chrooted to fakesys running bash
    gunziped the Archive.pax.gz
made a subdir, and from it pax -r -f ../Archives.pax
backed up the /usr/lib from the hd (using tar cf - * | tar xf - - C <dest> to preserve links perms etc ... no man pages so couldn't look up the cp switches to do that! . Backed up kernel too
did the same tar trick to install all updates from root
noted a few files were a lot smaller, such as libMath something, libobjc and the kernel...
tried chroot, diffferent error, about math lib. put in old,and chroot worked!
rebooted... no joy... back to dvd, replace old kernel
rebooted... (watching in verbose mode)... system got some way, than auto rebooted as per upgrade! (excitment rose!)
as comming up again, lots of errors about libobjc.. booted from cd and replaced.
    tried again in verbose mode.
looked good but then Firewall.app failed. after that I got lots of memberd couldn't find root users. Now on further reboots it panics with the kernel straight away.
I'll keep on digging, and will update this thread as I discover more. I think the problem maybe the library files i had to roll back, as the dmesg command still seg faults in the chrooted environment

Where did you obtain this? If the install failed,
isn't it possible or even likely that the file was
damaged at that point & the truncation is a result of
that? I'm no expert, but the man page for pax says
something about it only partially extracting files if
one is terminated by errors. Additionally, there is a
cryptic man entry under "bugs" about pax not
recognizing multibyte characters, which may be a part
    of it.
Also, in another thread, you mention terminal was
open at the time of the install. Were you doing
anything that could have caused the install to fail?
Terminal was open (I normally have it open for ssh/scp to other machines), but wasn't running anything except bash.
As I said, I obtained the file via Software Update, left it downloading to install then went to work. When I returned I had a message the install had failed, and the pkg was in the recycle bin. The machine would not run anything from this point, and even shutdown failed. Is it likely that a failed install would truncate the file? I really can't see why. Why would you write to an archive file in an install situation? Anyway, as I said, I can't say much on pax archives, but the archive was compressed. If you have a hard time understanding my confusion, try the following experiment. take a copy of one of your files, then do the following with a reasonable large file (split by default splits after 1000 lines):
    % gzip <file>
    % split <file>.gz
    % mv xaa xaa.gz
    % gunzip xaa.gz
Split will create several files (slipting your compressed file). You'll see unziping a truncated file produces an error.
Now it is quite possible that the install uses something like gzcat, which only produces errors at the end, such as "gzcat Archive.pax.gz | pax -r" the thing is, running gunzip Archive.pax.gz on the file SU downloaded produced no errors, so that's what confuses me. At any rate, it is best practice to checksum patch archives before running, and apple clearly don't do this, which is incredibly poor. I'm really not sure why there are a large number of people on this forum who find it so hard to believe that apple can do no wrong, and that every fault must be that of the user. Apple are not perfect, far from it. This is beginig to tire me. I found a solution when everyone else seemed to be saying use another mac, or re-install. I looked into what happened, and found the update the su had downloaded to be corrupt. I came up with a fix and shared. I think apple should look into this, and take feedback on several issues I've raised (and I'm sure others who found what I did would comment on too). If you want to insist it's not an apple problem, that's your perogative. I'd be the first to admit that I don't know much about macs (and didn't have much nice to say about them pre-osx), however, I do have a lot of experience with unix, and that's what I'm basing my comments on, and what I used to fix my mac.Anyway, enough ranting I need sleep.

  • Java for Mac OS X 10.5 update 2 fails install

So, I saw the news today. New Java update. Cool, I guess. Check for Software Updates, found Java update, downloaded, and failed install. So, I went and manually downloaded the new Java update and it does the same thing. When it fails installing, it says this: "The source media you are installing from is damaged. Try installing from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for replacement." Apple is gonna get me a new iMac because Java won't install? Sweet! In all seriousness though, what the deuce is going on? The only thing I have tried, aside from searching the boards for answers, is repairing permissions which didn't do anything. Help?

They will replace the Java media, not your computer. But because you have downloaded the software there is no media to replace.
Obviously your download is damaged. Try again. Be sure you do the following before downloading and trying to install:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Failed install now won't ever install properly

I attempted to install Firefox before, but the network security settings at the time never let me complete that install - it got stopped at the point where it had to reboot to finish.
Now it is caught in an endless loop of wanting to restart Windows all the time, but never completes. The security settings were changed to allow me to install, but now when I download and restart the download, or even when I go to the programs menu and attempt to UNINSTALL the program, it just goes back to the damn popup about needing to restart to complete the original install!!! How in the hell do I get rid of the old one? The folder was deleted from the PROGRAM FILES, but STILL gives me this crap!

Not really solved, but I figured out a work-around. I went to "custom" and installed it to a folder on my desktop, then moved it to my program files. However, I still have the rebooting link in my Start menu, and I can't uninstall the new one even -- goes back to the same garbage as above!
There is obviously some remnant of the old, failed install in the system that is screwing with things, but I don't know where/what!

  • Can't find routing connectors as shell won't find exchange server after failed install

I am trying to uninstall exchange 2010 after a failed install. When attempting to remove the Hub role I get an error that the computer is configured as a bridgehead server for 2 routing groups. I have seen how to find and remove them through the cmd shell,
however, due to the failed install (and the other bridgehead having a huge raid failure and being bricked) I can't locate the connection through the exchange shell. Any ideas on how to delete this connection so I can uninstall 2010 in order to re-install it.

    Hi,
Can you set the Exchange 2003 server as the bridge head then try uninstalling the Exchange 2010 server again.
    Thanks,

  • How to resolve some install problems for 7.02 on Windows 7 64 bit

This is a short re-cap of some of the issues I came across when installing NSP 7.02 on Win 7 system. I'm posting it here rather than writing a blog - there are numerous excellent guides already out there, but the particular issues below meant I had to collect info from several other posts, search other forums, and also do a bit of research on my own. Therefore, I hope that this post can be useful for those who - like me - had to resort to searching the forums... sometimes in vain.
Installing the 7.02 Sneak Preview on a 64-bit system is not that straightforward, but "doable". I've just spent the weekend successfully installing on two systems; an HP Touchsmart laptop (i3 processor) and my trusty Dell desktop (Core 2). Both machines have 4Gb RAM, barely sufficient, but the thing is up and running. At last.
Compared to earlier Sneak Previews, or the 32-bit varieties, this is no walk in the park. Definitely not like the first 2004s, which ran as smoothly as a knife through butter (at least on XP).
Here are my own tips, based on the issues I experienced:
Phase 5: Failure to start MAXDB instance - installer reports no MAXDB software installed. Curiously, this happened on one of the machines, not the other. Even weirder, it happened on the machine that had previously had a MAXDB installation (which was wiped clear before installing).
I got around this one by manually installing MAXDB. The steps were:
Launch the 64-bit MAXDB installer - sdbinst.exe - from the 64-bit MAXDB directory (NOT the 32 bit, which won't run on your 64 bit system anyway). It's in one of the sub-directories - search for it. Use it to start a manual install of MAXDB, and select the "tutorial" database. This will install a sample (256Mb) database on your system. Now, re-start the miniSAP installer, and you should pass phase 5 without issues. (See info below on the STATISTIC file!)
ABAP import issues: If the ABAP import step fails, with at least one of the 37 import jobs failing, this could help:
Break off the installation. Go to the sapinst_dir\...\ADA\CENTRAL directory, and delete all .TSK files and their related .TXT counterparts. These are (to my knowledge) created during the ABAP import, based on the DB schema files that are used for the ABAP import. If you remove these (or at least the ones that caused the import to fail), it will re-apply them when you re-start the installation and select the option to use existing installation.
Also remember to delete the "statistic" file in the same directory - it will generate an error if you do not get rid of it before re-starting the installation.
Usually, this is enough to ensure the ABAP import works.
    Install license and developer key:
The system calls itself "SAP-INTERNAL", not "DEMOSYSTEM". This is somewhat confusing, as the NSP license key you request from SAP will not load due to different installation names. The workaround is to DELETE all temporary (pre-installed) licenses. Mark them, right-click, then delete. Make sure there's NOTHING left in SLICENSE, then upload the file you got from the license request page (NSP, 2004s Service pack 9 or higher). This should work.
Only now can you use the developer access key of BCUSER.
Remember, every time you re-start the installation and select the "use old" option, you have to remove the mentioned "statistics" file from the ADA\CENTRAL directory, since it keeps track of what has been done so far.
This version seem to suck resources like no other sneak preview has done before. I'm looking forward to installing it on a new, powerful machine - just have to get around to ordering it first...

    Trond

    Hi Trond,
Extremely helpful observations here. Am sure quite some folks will hit this thread!

  • Acrobat XI Invalid Serial Number After Failed Install

    Hello,
We currently have Adobe Acrobat XI on an enterprise license. I went to install this on 3 of our Windows 7 tablets. Prior to my attempt, I removed Adobe Reader XI which is what I always do. After that I started the installer on the machine and entered the key just fine. All 3 tablets got stuck around 96-97% and failed with an error 1935. I then followed the instructions located here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error-1935-install-acrobat-reader.html
Following a reboot, I tried to install again and now I am receiving the "Invalid Serial Number" error when trying to click "Next" on the installer. It won't even let me choose install trial and go. The next button does nothing when selecting trial. I tried running the offical Adobe Acrobat Cleaner and the Adobe CS6 cleaner (since Acrobat XI is part of CS6 technically). Both programs found items to delete but following a reboot I'm still receiving the same error. I also have other XI enterprise serials available and none of them work. I have a feeling something happened on the tablets that is causing the installer to think it's the wrong version or type for those serial numbers.
      Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rosa,
I would like to check the issue at your end.
Can you please provide me the contact details at [email protected] so that we can discuss this on call.
    Regards,
    Rave

Thank you for your response. Being a newbie to Microsoft
Vista (which I recommend the world to reject) I don't know exactly
how to describe how I got the install of Flex Builder 2 to work.
But, a friend of mine walked me through turning off the Windows
Defender security settings as well as all security settings related
to my user's setting. I believe I disabled two Vista "features",
and then the install worked. The only thing was that the checkboxes
during the install program did not appear, but clicking the
respective questions themselves did the trick (i.e. do you agree to
software license?' and 'install Flash player on IE / Firefox?')
Sorry I can't be more specific... but, for anyone that has
this problem, in the words of my friend, "Turn everything off in
Vista you can, then try it!".
    Good luck,

  • Failed install of OSX Mavericks and my iMac is now saying the Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired! Help!

I need help getting my iMac working again.
Last night I tried to install OSX Mavericks, my previous/current OS is 10.6.8
After restarting the Mavericks install screen appears and then stops and give me this error message:
    "Install Failed
OS X could not be installed on your computer.
The OS x upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Mackintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data , erase your disk and try installing again.
Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
I tried restarting numerous time but to no avail.
    Please help!

Have you got back to restore from if all else fails?
Try booting from the grey restore disk that came with the Mac: disk in drive and restart holding down the 'c' key. Hopefully it'll boot, albeit slowly. At the first screen select your language and from the menu bar of the next screen choose Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD>Repair Disk. Hopefully DU wil repair the errors. Click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Try to restart as normal from the Apple menu.

  • Cannot uninstall PSE10 after failed install (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I am trying to install Photoshop Elements 10 from a disk.
The process has gone like this:
I restarted my laptop and made sure it's Windows Updates were up-to-date.
I uninstalled the PSE9 trial that I had on this computer (that had expired a while ago).
    Restarted laptop.
Put PSE10 disk 1 into drive and ran Autoplay.exe. [Maybe I accidentally ran it twice as at a later point I vaguely remember seening a message box saying 'can't ran ... at the same time' or something like that]
I chose the 'Install PSE10 option' - with no Premier trial.
The install app opened in a normal way and ran for several minutes while I did something else.
When I next looked it was displaying a message saying something like Couldn't install Shared Technologies...
I looked the issue up on the web and found an Adobe page saying to install Adobe Support Advisor, which I did and this identified the issue as "cpsid_83574r3: Read or write file system errors when installing - Creative Suite 5"
There was also a link to a help page which suggested Uninstalling the program, renaming any remaing PSE10 folders and reinstalling.
So I ran Uninstall - by running Autoplay.exe on the disk (couldn't find any other way).
This quickly produced an error and reported that no changes had been made.
I changed the name of the 'Photoshop Elements 10' and 'Elements 10 Organizer' folders anyway. This involved going into safe mode as the first folder would not delete.
Then I tried reinstalling. But everytime I try to reinstall via autoplay.exe it just offers me the uninstall option and this always fails with error message: Error 2343.Specified path is empty
    What do I do next????

    Jeff,
I have tried renaming the folders back to what they were - to no effect.
Uninstall does not work either by:
Using Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Photoshop Elements does not appear anywhere in the list of installed programs.
Running the Installation from the disk - it says it's going to do an uninstall and gives a 2343 error and says nothing's been changed.
The link you gave did not seem relevant as it was about looking at the install log and trying to spot the problem there. But the install log I have tells me what happened when I tried to run the original installation process.
I did manage to find the uninstall log.
The bit where things goes wrong looks like:
    Action 17:06:45: SetCustomShortCutDir_uninstall.
    Action start 17:06:45: SetCustomShortCutDir_uninstall.
    Error 2343.Specified path is empty.
MSI (s) (EC:5C) [17:06:48:358]: Product: Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 -- Error 2343.Specified path is empty.
When I search for 'CustomShortCut', I find thsi further down the log
    Property(S): CustomShortCutDir = C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
(I've checked and this directory does exist, but just has a shortcut to the Photoshop Elements 10 exe)
and a bit further down the log I found:
    Property(C): CustomShortCutDir = P:\CustomShortCutDir\
This directory didn't exist (obviously). I do have a P: drive (an ordinary partition on my HDD), so I created the dir. But there was no effect the next time I tried to run uninstall.

If this is really just an OCM (Oracle Configuration Manager) issue then I hope it won't stop me configuring the rest of the environment correctly (OCM seems, at least in principle, like it could be optional), but I'm reluctant even to attempt to configure with install errors unresolved.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. Tried re-installing and re-imaging the box several times. This is the first time I'm running into this issue as I have performed several installs on other Windows 2008 R2 servers with no issues.
Does anyone have any idea? I opened SR with Oracle, they suggested that this is a bug (This is due to a known issue with older versions of OCM -unpublished bug 9800347 [http://bug.oraclecorp.com/pls/bug/webbug_edit.edit_info_top?rptno=9800347] . This was fixed in 10.3.4 and backported to 10.3.3.1.1; apparently an older version (10.3.3.1) which is bundled in this kit as this OCM 10.3.3.1).
I'm not buying this explanation as it does not explain why this is happening and why few other times in the past with same system and same version install it worked perfectly fine.
