RESOLVED - K8N Neo2 Platinum problem with large Seagate disk

Hi All,
I've been running this system for 4 years and I'm very happy with it. But I've run into a problem:
I'm trying to exchange my 120 GB Seagate Barracuda systemdisk with a 500 GB Barracuda and I can't install XP with SP2.
First I tried to clone the old HD with Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image. The cloning looked fine but after taking the old HD out and moving the new one to P-ATA 1 as Primary Master I get an "error - no operating system found". I also tried a fresh install from CD. After the CD reboots the system I get the same error.
The HD is present in BIOS with the right parameters and all is looking well - but still no go.
I've fiddled around in BIOS (vers. 1.3) with the different settings (LBA, Large, Auto, Csh.) The last 2 options gives the "no operating system" error and the first 2 gives a "disk error" although Seagate says that I should change settings to "LBA".
I only have the new HD in the machine. I also tried fixboot and fixmbr. I can see all the installed files when I put it in as a slave.
So my question is:
Does the K8N Neo2 Platinum have a problem with large hd's as system disk?
Or is this a Seagate or Windows problem ?
Any help is much appreciated!
Mads

Actually that was the first thing I did just to see if the drive worked :-) - except that I had it as master on the second ide cable. It formats like it should and all partitions report "healthy". The only difference is that the new drives c-partition is set as active (can't find a way to change it back)  - while the old one is set as system. Could this make a difference ?
Since neither cloning nor a fresh install works I think the problem is something else. Maybe I should try Seatools and see if that makes any difference.
Thank's all for help so far! - Other suggestions ?

[Athlon64] Msi K8N Neo2 Platinum problems with Patriot Ram

    First post, whoo hooo
So what version of BIOS are u running?  I recently installed the two newest versions 2.0 and 2.1, and they both give me problems.  With the latest (2.1) I'm getting the same error as you.  Returning back to previous BIOS fixed my problems.  Oh yeah, my RAM is Kingston Hyper-X, so i don't think thats your problem.
Let me know if you fix it, thats why im here, .

    BTW -
Here's a thread about your prob to check out. I thought it was totally solved for all nvidia chipsets, guess not. Nf3's seem to still have it to some extent. It seems Maxtor is the one that "dropped the ball" this time...

  • K8n neo2 platinum problems

ok guys I've been looking all over the internet and cannot find any answers to my problem.
I have an MSI K8N neo2 platinum running easybios
    AMD Opteron 146
    2gb Ballistixs pc4000
    30gb maxtor
    120gb maxtor
    2x dvd rw drives
    nvidia 6800 agp
    sound blaster live 24bit
I run windows x64 and after flashing my bios form 1.6 (I think) to 1b I kept getting errors e.g. "ROM cannot invoke" (or something), and primarily "disk read error", now the disks show up in the bios, they show up in a windows install but it just won't boot from them. I have flashed to easybios and the rom error went away but the disk read one was still there. I am now reinstaling windows x64 but would like to know how to fix such a problem if it were to happen again. Both my drives are IDE and are on the IDE0 cable with master and slave correctly set.
Also the temperature readings for my processor are 42 degrees celcius when everything is at stock and I have a zalman 9500 heatsink fan on it running at full speed. This is obviously wrong - is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks
    Daven

I has the exact issue with my board, except it was with the SATA drives. I flashed with e few BIOS', and the newest one that worked correctly was 1.8
If it was me, I would reflash to BIOS 1.8
    Post back with your results.
Also, even though you are installing Windows again, it will most likely corrupt your installation, as it did mine, twice, before I figured out the problem.

  • Serious K8N Neo2 Platinum Problem

    Hello
This is my long and sad story with this MSI board...
As I mentioned above, I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum with a Athlon64 3500+ (130nm) and some Corsair TwinX 3200XL 2x512 MB. The recommended setting for this Ram is 2-2-2-5-T1, but with this setting, my system crashes in prime 95 after maybe 5 mins and under compiling a Gentoo-System. But on the other hand, Memtest 86 reports no error at all with this timing. Later I changed the Timing to 2-2-2-5-T2 and suddenly, everyting becames stable. I could compile two Gentoo systems (32 & 64 Bit) and ran prime 95 for more than 24 hours. I have nothing overclocked. I think the Board is the Problem here, because there are some other malfunctions. Sometimes it doesen't detect my IDE Devices at startup (DVD-Rom and CD-rw) or my ethernet card gets no connection, but everything is configured well. So I really dont know what to do. I feed my Memory with 2.75 Volt. I also flashed the mainboard to Bios-Version 1.3 but nothing changed...
I hope anyone of you can give me a hint or something...
    Thanks a lot

corsair ultra-low latency requires 2.75V according to their documentation. Also I have heard that prime95 has an issue with systems with 1024mb or ram in a certain test. Not sure I can't confirm but I do remember reading that somewhere yesterday.

  • K8N NEO2 PLATINUM HANGS WITH NVIDIA, WORKS WITH ATI???????????

    HI
I have endless problems with nivida cards on a MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM board.  I have tried 4 different nvidia cards and they all hang on any 3D app or game. NFSU2 looks like it lags in the menu already. It stops for 2 sec then goes again for about 10 secs.
Slot in any ATI grachics card and it works 100% for hours with no problems. I am runnig a 480W Antec psu aslo, so there is no power problem.
    Anybody have any idea???????????????????

well..i tried to oc my vid with 78.01  my comp rebooted in just a few seconds of game play...so i reset clock speeds to stock...got rid of 78.01's and installed 80.40 betas...so far so good..and i got this email replay from BFG asking for any fixes..here's a summary of what they said
"If you check the HardOCP forums as well as many others, issues with NF3 chipset motherboards are rampant. They seem to be limited to the implementation of a 64-bit processor with AGP architecture cards, fast ones in particular, but NOT limited to NVIDIA cards. People with fast ATI cards have the same issues... so don't act without investigating.
We have no point of action we can do for you in the matter. The chipset and drivers for it are made by NVIDIA, then implemented by different companies on their products. The exact same can be said for the GPU, chipset on the graphics cards and drivers for them. We're a manufacturer who uses their technology and unified drivers for our cards, but we make "OC" cards that run faster than NVIDIA designed their GPU and chips to run. NVIDIA can't control "how" the companies implement their technology, but makes every effort to create drivers to accommodate issues that crop up during the product 'life-cycle'."
ill say this...i personally havent seen anyone with an ATI having this issue..if anyone knows of that...please let me know...as much as i bashed ATI....i feel like im left with no choice  but to buy one(x850xt pe)if no one plans on fixing this for us..any imput is appreciated

  • MSI NEO2 Platinum, problem with mouse Genius PS2 optical

    Hello,
I have a MSI NEO2 Platinum motherboard with a mouse Genius optical PS2. When the S.O. init the mouse is not detected, I unplug and plug again the PS2 port and the mouse work perfectly ! ... The mouse is working perfectly, I test it in another PC, the problem is the motherboard !
The same situation is on Windows XP Professional and Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
Please help me, thanks for your attention !
    Raúl.

    Raúl,
The PS2 slot is NOT a hot plug! If you remove and reinstall it while there is power to the mobo you stand a very good chance of destroying the PS2 Slot.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • Tons of K8N Neo2 Platinum problems

Ok, I installed this board 2 days ago and everything was fine, since then my USB has stopped working, and I mean all of them, even onboard.  My temp reporting has become ridiculous, like jumping from -127C to 200C Core temp.

    250gb Hitachi Deskpro SATA
    Thermaltake 550 Pure Power PSU
    Koolance pc2-650 cooling (CPU-300 block, vid-180H block)
If you guys have already answered these questions I'm sorry to be asking again but I did scan thru 15 pages of posts looking for answers.
    Thanks in advance.

Usually this comes from running the Nvidia System Utility.
To fix, unplug power from back of PC.  Move CMOS reset jumper to clear position and leave for now.  Then remove the CMOS battery.  Wait about 10 minutes, reinstall batter, put CMOS jumper back in correct position, and finally plug in power.
Your BIOS settings will be reset and you should first load optimized, reboot, and then you can go back in to BIOS to put your settings back.
We've all been there done that.  Later

  • K8N Neo2 Driver Problem with PCI Bridge.

I updated the Bios on this machine last night to 1.04 from 1.03
    K8N - Neo2
AMD 3500+ Retail Kit with Cooler
    Antec True430W 3.3v/28A 5v/36A 12v/26A
OCZ 2X512 EL DDR400 PC 3200 Plat Ed Dual Channel
Seagate Barracuda 120g 7200 rpm SATA
    TSST Corp DVD-ROM TS-H
    ATI Radeon 9000 64mb AGP
    Windows XP SP2
It started acting funny several hours after the update of the Bios, this AM it spontaneously rebooted and when it came up there was an error message about a damaged or corrupt Windows system file and suggested inserting the Windows Disk, which was done and then the system booted into windows. But the found new hardware came up and wanted driver for the PCI bridge, which I wasn't sure where it was so I let it complete without finding it and this is the error when I go to control panel/system/hardware/device mgr
Where do I get this driver? Is it on the driver disk that came with the motherboard? I don't remember having to install a driver for the PCI bridge.
    thanks

OK I thought I'd post the resolution to my problem.
After my initial posts the machine not only became unstable but it wouldn't boot into windows saying there was a corrupt Windows System File.
    1.  It occured to me that when I downloaded the new bios and applied it that I had failed to customize the DRAM settings in the bios. This was important because when I was building the machine I couldn't get Windows XP to install it always pooped out someplace early in the install.  At the time I was using default DRAM settings.  But I came here and read through the forum and found a sticky at the top of the forum that had settings for a number of different memory sticks including mine. So I went back and updated my bios with those setting. Voila everything was cool and I was able to load windows and move forward.   But I forgot that, and I attribute the instability of the system to that, wheter or not it was why the system eventually corrupted system board dirvers I don't know.  But I did change that, as the system would boot but just not boot windows.
    2. Next, I decided to attempt to repair my windows install.  However first since I had already applied SP2, and my Install disk was just the plain retail without any Service Packs.  I decided to make a new bootable install disk with SP2 slipstreamed into it so when I repaired I wouldn't have to reapply SP2.    Here's the method that I used.
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html
    3.  Utilized the windows repair feature of windows setup.
    4. That worked my computer now booted into windows and I didn't lose data or configurations....whew!!
    5.  I still how ever was stuck with the original problem that started this thread..rats!! I thought SP2 would fix that.
    6.  I tried several times to get XP to update the driver, but I couldn't.  I even tried to select the driver from the list that is one of the optioins when you are updating drivers.  I found some but I wasn't sure which one that had PCI bridge in it was the right one. But the fact that when I was looking at the list of mfg only Compaq and NVidia were available. So a light bulb went off and opened up MSI Live  and looked at what was available in drivers, and sure enought there was a NVida driver.  So I figured I have nothing to lose.
    7. Next I downloaded the latest NVida nForce3 system driverfrom MSI and applied.
    8.  Bingo that worked, no more yellow ?'s in my hardware list.
Machine working fine now.  Still don't know if failing to insert the proper DRAM stuff caused this but it all started with the new bios so I am assuming it had some part.

  • Numerous K8N Neo2 Platinum Problems -- Argh!

I am experiencing numerous problems that are mentioned on this site:
    1) Unplugging the power cable, plugging back in and turn on the Power Supply switch and then the whole computer turns on and hangs with a black screen.  I then have to turn the computer off/on on fron switch.
    2) Occasional Hanging at detecting IDE devices
    3) Sometimes losing USB Keyboard and mouse while in windows or rebooting.  Taking several reboots to fix.  (I removed my antec sonata front USB header per other posts and we will see the results)
For issue 1 and 2, I have not seen solutions.  But......
I run SpeedFan 4.18 and notice something disturbing: VBAT reading 0.00.  Does anyone know if the VBAT reading is  reported using SpeedFan?  Maybe it just does not read it but with some of the problems that appear to be a battery problem (Like #1) this concerns me.
Are others able to get the VBAT readings?
Perhaps I have a dead battery?  Thus when removing the power I lose the settings on the Mobo to not turn automatically one when the power plug is removed?
I am using 1.3 BIOS,  I just got the motherboard yesterday and have been fiddling with it for about 10 hours.
    * Athlon 3500+ (Not 90nm)
    * 2 512MB Kingston KVR400X64C3A modules in DIMM 1 and 2.  (What would be the memory settings in bios to use?  Currently it is all AUTO)
    * Antec Sonata Case with 380w power supply
    * Rear 120mm fan blowing out, front 120mm fan taking air in.
    * WD 74GB Raptor SATA
    * WD 120GB 8MB Cache EIDE
    * TDK 840G DVD/CD Writer
    * ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
    Everything else I use onboard.
When I first installed the DBracket showed all 4 red lights (CPU bad) but after a CMOS refresh that went away.  It happens sometimes when I unplug it from the power cord.
Any insight you can give on any of these issues is appreciated.

    Thank you for your reply.
I did check the BIOS and the VBAT is showing voltage.  So I assume the battery is good.  I have seen the problem with the power switch being turned on from the PSU and the system just starts up (though it should not).  Then, only after turning off with the case front power switch does it resume normal operation.  This is only after unplugging it from the wall.
Since the batter has voltage, it is odd that things get messed up when unplugging from the wall.  Any possible resolutions at this time for that?
I am afraid of BIOS upgrades but I am willing to give it a shot if it has the possibility of straigtening out this system.  I need to work quickly though cause I only have 7 days to return this board.  I am considering a different brand, but I want to give MSI a shot.  I have always been a ASUS user and never had problems in the 6 years I have used the boards.
I will try the USB fix, I will let you know the results.
I have not had the IDE issue as of later because I do not unplug my system from the wall.  But I am afraid if I lose power and I am not here that the machine will turn on and then sit there all day with 4 red LEDs on the DBracket.  Then is when I also will get a IDE detection problem which requires a reset once, maybe twice.

    there ok
If you want to alter them go  into bios - Cell Menu - Dram Settings ,
    see Dram Settings for help

    2) Occasional Hanging at detecting IDE devices
It may be worthwhile whilst your trying to troubleshoot , unplugging your 2nd HD
Unplug drive - see if that helps
If not go into dram settings & change the 1T/2T to 2T - This will slow the SDram command rate and may help
Take a deep breath - chill It helps

  • K8N Neo2: Another problem with the BIOS 1.9

I flashed my K8N Neo2 with the BIOS 1.9, I lost the MAC address of the NVIDIA NIC. I fixed the problem reflashing the BIOS with the /nvmac:XXXXXXXXXXXX /wb options. Loaded the default settings and set the boot priority, the new BIOS is unable to boot from my Adaptec 19160 SCSI controller: it try always to boot to the NVIDIA NIC. It seems that the NVIDIA NIC has a higher boot priority than other external boot devices and it's impossible to change it.
    The settings are:
    First boot divice: Floppy
    Secind boot device: Hard-Disk
    Third boot device: CD-Rom
    Hard disk boot priority:
    1. Adaptec SCSI
    2. NV RAID
    3. Other boot device
I reflashed the BIOS with the old 1.8 and now the system works well ...

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum flashed with Neo4 BIOS

I decided to install the MSI Live update utility today. Following it's instructions and with a stunning display of ineptitude, I've managed to flash my Neo 2 Platinum with the latest (1.9) Neo4 BIOS.
I never thought I'd do something this stupid, but there you have it. As you'd expect, it doesn't POST. the D-Bracket shows it hanging on Initializing Hard Drive Controller (amazing it gets that far).
Just for the hell of it, I've tried all the usual (removing all components, holding Insert on boot, resetting CMOS) but it's looks pretty terminal. Can anyone suggest a way I can salvage this board? Is it possible to aquire new bios chips?
    Thanks

If you are in Europe/UK then Yes - try http://www.eksitdata.com/_uk/index.asp
You can buy a new bios chip and get them to flash it with the file you provide AND for future saftey buy a BIOS Savoir as well. See my sig for model info.
