[RESOLVED]NF980-G65 Hang on windows 7 install. Unable to boot

Hello,
I'm a bit at wit's end here.  My old non-MSI motherboard was failing and giving me loud beep errors, so I decided to replace it.  In doing so I was required to update basically the whole computer in order to keep up with tech trends and my new LCD monitor.
I bought an MSI NF980-G65, 4 gb ddr3 RAM, an ADM 64 250 dual core, and a Nvidia GTX 260.  After I installed the hardware, I was unable to access windows vista 32 on my old hard drive.  I assumed this was because of driver conflicts. Because I had no install discs (only upgrade/recovery discs) I was unable to boot from CD, so I purchased windows 7.  Regardless of which disc(32 or 64) I use when I set my boot sequence in BIOS to boot from the CD first, this is what happens:
The screen shows a white loading bar that says "Windows is loading"
The next screen shows "Starting Windows" with a small "microsoft corporation" logo below it.  It sometimes has a red pixel on the screen.
The next screen it flips to is all blank.  From there it does nothing, no matter how long I leave it.
I have tried booting with no graphics card(internal only)
I have tried booting with no HD attached.
I have tried booting with only one HD attached (of two I've done this both ways)
My HD's have been checked and they are fine
I have tried booting using another dvd rom drive
I have tried swapping IDE HD slots with that of the dvd.
the DVD does use a pci extension card because the sable is not long enough for the dvd player, but regardless of where that IDE cable is plugged in, it still hangs in the load screen and does not go anywhere.
I've seen this symptom mentioned, but not per this motherboard, it seems like a BIOS setting issue but I feel like I've tried them all (disable LAN etc).
If I try to boot to the old Vista 32 install, it says "starting windows" but the logo does not appear, and the progress bar does not fill.
If I try booting vista 32 in any safe mode the load hangs on a .sys file.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get this going in the right direction? This has become very frustrating.
Thanks,
Alex

What are your complete system specs?  Need the complete picture.  What ram and timings?  Tried 1 dimm in slot closest to cpu?
Since posting this I have tried formatting my Small drive listed above.  I was only able to erase the info using Killdisk.  The format from windows using my old Motherboard (Abit) would not work.  Last night I let the system try to install windows 7 all night, I had 2gb of ddr3 in 1 dimm slot closest to the cpu.  I connected only the above drive after it was whiped, no graphics card (limited on board graphics are on the motherboard) and the install still hung as usual.  Does Killdisk do some sort of improper format? I had assumed that it would erase all data to provide a clean slate.  But I don't even thing a HD is required in order to boot up to the main setup screen?
Do I have voodoo in my machine?

  • Problems with Windows install and erasing Boot camp partition.

I recently decided I'd try running a copy of XP on my Macbook, the only reason being that the software for my OU work is only available on Windows. I used Boot camp assistant to partition my hard drive which went smoothly. When I tried to install Windows, I get to the Windows install screen, and it says "Press enter to begin installation". Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't seem to work, so obviously I can't begin the installation. I've tried using my old Apple USD keyboard, but it didn't make any difference. I thought I'd try the whole process from scratch, but found I can't erase the original partition. I've read that you should use Boot camp assistant again, but when I press the continue key, I get the message:
"The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
Does anybody know a way of sorting either of these problems out? Much appreciated.

I've been doing a bit more reading into the problem. I think the keyboard problem's because I'm not using the SP2 version on XP. So hopefully once I get a copy, I should be able to sort it. But I still can't seem to use BCA to erase the partition.

  • Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 - unable to boot up after installing

Hi everyone, I really hope anyone can help me with this!!
Ok, I've always used Imageready CS2 to open avi files to edit then save as animation GIF without affecting quality (which part of PS CS2 that I did pay for) on my old laptop with Windows XP in the past.
Since then I've got a upgrade to PS CS5 (paid for) which I've installed successfully onto my new laptop with Windows 7 but till now, I'm dismayed to find that I'm unable to open avi files in PS CS5 just because I have 64 bit, not 32 bit even though I couldn't find the 32 bit program anywhere (apparently I found the 32 bit by searching in start up button but it still opens as 64 bit?).
So I thought I'd try installing PS CS2 into Windows 7 using my CD and found that the activation part doesn't work anymore which leads me to finding that I could download a copy of PS CS2 without the activation bit (yes I did the uninstall before installing PS CS2 without activation) everything was great BUT...untill I tried booting up my laptop next time, it wouldn't start up properly at all, it would only manage it to that Boot Screen Animation then blackness with the cursor in the middle or rarely to the log on screen that doesn't work but thats it so I had to do a system restore to get it back in working order minus the PS CS2
I thought it was the fault of other things I've downloaded at around same time like xvid decompressor codecs (so I could use VeeDub64) so I downloaded the codeces from different source and restarted to see if it boots up ok (it did) so I tried installing PS CS2 again but same thing happened on restart - failure to boot up and I had to do a few system restores (as some of the points didn't work ) before I barely got it back in working order yet again....
I see that some people have PS CS2 that works perfectly on Windows 7 with 64 bit because they changed the file path when installing the program? Or was I supposed to have the 32 bit program somewhere although maybe I don't have it since my PS CS5 is not extended? Would either of those work? To be honest, I'm quite reluctant to try as I may end up killing my laptop this time around and it's only around 2 years old!!
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

I'm happy to report that I've managed the resolve this issue of mine
After a little discussion with customer support through online chat today, I was still advised to try the uninstall and install to see what happens.
So I used the CC cleaner tool first, restarted then started by installing CS2 then CS5 using my serial numbers and made sure that I selected 32 and 64 bit programs to be installed
Anxiously, I restarted my laptop to see if it would reboot okay and thankfully it did *relief!*
Now I can open avi files using 32 bit of Photoshop CS5 without any problems (thank goodness!!)
I think I probably didn't install the 32 bit program when I first bought the installation CD, since I thought I didn't need it but never knew it was still required for editing avi files!!
Surprisingly, I still got to keep both versions of CS2 and CS5 this time around, as CS2 was simply replaced by CS5 when I first installed it two years ago....hmm.
    So thank you again gener7!

  • My new iMac does not recognise an iso image of windows install disk in boot camp

I have the iso file for win7 64bit but when I run bootcamp I do not get the option to use a USB stick, so loaded the file onto a DVD-R disk.
When I load the disc the iMac tries to read it then stops and asks to me to put the disk in.
I am logged in to the machine as the administrator.
As a registered MSDN member I downloaded the iso file direct from the Microsoft MSDN website only a couple of weeks ago.
Any asisstance will be most appreciated, as I am a Mac newby and I really want to dump my old windows laptop and desktop machines1

Hi I'd recommend re-posting in the Boot Camp forum, that is where the Boot Camp & Windows guru's hang out.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Mini stuck with windows install, won't boot from OSX DVD

Ok, I just bought this mac mini from ebay, yeah i know but it was cheap. I got it and it came with windows xp installed. I thought ok, I will just pop in my snow leopard disk and get rid of windows. so i put in retail new copy of snow leopard in the drive, shutdown, power on, hold C... grey screen for a little while then into windows boot screen. Thought ok, I will try reset pram, option + command + p + r, nothing... just boots into windows. I have tried to original osx 10.4 restore disks that came with the machine with the same results. I also tried holdind D during boot with the original disks and it still does the same thing.
I have also tried holding down option during boot, thinking it would give me my boot options, nothing still goes into windows. I am using a new aluminum white keyed usb apple keyboard and apple optical mouse, all plugged into the back of the machine.
I don't know what to do next, if I can't find the solution it looks like i am going to have to take this thing apart and yank the drive and format it on my other machine with osx partition.
    thanks

There's a couple more options yet.
First, try a different USB keyboard.
Second, when in Windows use the Bootcamp system tray utility to choose bootup from the OSX partition. You can install the Bootcamp system tray utility from the SL disk.
Third, if you have another Mac and an appropriate firewire cable, bring the Mini up in Target Disk Mode and blat the disk that way.

  • Ahhh! I need help windows install messed up boot order

I tried to install windows XP for a work related program I needed to run and the instal did not work. So i went into boot camp and removed the partition and now whenever my imac restarts it tries to boot the removed windows with doesn't work. It tells me there is no boot disc and to press any key to restart. Pressing any key doesn't work so I have to revert to holding power and turning it back on holding "option" When that brings up the select system to boot the only option is mac, yet if I do not start up this way I cannot get mac to boot.
How can I get the windows default book off of my computer so it once again boots in mac default?

    first, reset PRAM.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
then boot into OS X and change the startup disk in system preferences->startup disk. also, you should check your disk for errors which are quite possible after a failed use of bootcamp assistant. run "verify disk" (not permissions) on it using Disk Utility and if it reports any errors boot from the leopard install DVD and repair the disk using Disk Utility there.

  • Eclipse MS-7520 - Unable to boot windows if Dimm slot A1 is used

I am unable to boot into or install windows XP, Vista (32 and 64 bit) or Windows 7 Beta if I have any memory installed in Slot A1 - it freezes at the windows loading screen (the little green bar gets about 1/3 way across). I am able to press F8 to bring up the windows boot menu but not even safe mode will boot.
I have 6 ram modules in total. If I populate slots as per the manual only using 4 or 5 modules I have this problem. If I populate only A0 and A1 the problem occurs. If I populate all slots except A1 it boots windows fine every time (with 10GB of RAM).
When there is a module in slot A1 the BIOS posts fine. Going into Memory-Z shows that the module is there and lists the spd information which matches the other slots. I can even perform a memtest86 (booting dos from USB stick) on the memory and it passes multiple times (shows the full 12Gb with all 6 modules installed). It seems very odd that windows is unable to boot until the module in slot A1 is removed.
So far I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version (1.4), cleared the BIOS back to defaults and have even tried setting conservative memory timings and ratios manually (at 4x ratio as suggested in the forums). Tried performing fresh installs with drivers from both the MSI CD and website and running MSI live update.
I have only had the mainboard for a week but looking through the forum I have been unable to find a fix for this specific issue. I have logged a global support ticket with MSI but since there are quite a few users around the forum I thought someone here may have had a similar issue or could possibly point out something that I may be missing, some some odd setting or something else that I can try?

    Hi.
I did try to up the voltage all the way from 1.5 to 1.6 but no joy.
I received a response from MSI which was to try and update to a beta Bios of 1.53. Didn't make any difference unfortunately.
I have since talked with tech support where I purchased the board from and they have recommended to return the board and have it replaced. (They tested another board in their stock with 12Gb ram similar to mine and said it ran fine)
I'll post an update when I receive the replacement board
Oh, and thanks for the tip -  I appreciate it.

Photoshop only has one Color Palette.  If you could script something  like a Color Palette with  two sets of active sliders the script would be in control till you dismissed its sliders dialog.  You would not be able to do anything but adjust the script's sliders in Photoshop while the script dialog window is being displayed.  Photoshop Scripting does not have real palette dialog type support.
I do not know what is possible with Photoshop extensions using HTML 5 Panels.....

  • MSI NF980-G65 Blue Screen during Windows XP Install - HELP !!!

I have a MSI NF980-G65 motherboard and it works great with Windows 7 but I can't install Windows XP Home edition 32 bit. Win XP checks hardware, then loads all initial files and when the blue screen with the license agreement should pop open I get a blue screen with an error message that says the computer was stopped to prevent damage to the hardware, that the HDD might not have enough room on it and/or the BIOS might need updating.
The HDD has Win 7 on it and it's a 250GB drive so there should be more than enough room on the HDD and the NF980 came with the latest BIOS v1.4
Anyone have any experience and a fix so I can install Win XP ? Thanks

Then the problem is elsewhere, as that was fixed with SP1.
Or his disk doesn't even contain that level.
However, when pre-partitioned to NTFS even without SP1 should install.
I doubt the problem is his CDrom.
What he needs to do is get http://www.bootdisk.com/ntfs.htm
Run NTFS4DOS and do a checkdisk.
Yes that will solve his problem, as Windows (from 2000 to W7) are to stupid to do a checkdisk when the disk is in a certain state.
And even a Windows bootdisk can't solve it and crashed with the error he has.
Only Linux or NTFS-DOS can do a check disk and restore the error M$-NTFS makes it failing too boot or reinstall.

  • Windows 7 install hangs at "Windows is loading files ..." on MBA

I have been trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate but each time the install hangs at "Windows is loading files ..." on reboot. I am using a Windows install DVD using an external drive. When the install hangs, the DVD is not being accessed. I have tried several times and it leads to the same result. I have tried different partition sizes (20 GB - 50 GB), no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Solution
I have a macmini bought in mid2011 with OS Lion on it. AS it doesnot come with an optical drive, I bought an LG DVD drive and used the windows 7 (64bit) installation DVD. It stopped at windows is loading files....
I tired couple of other options like using flash dirve but it dint work.
The I went to Apple's Genius Bar, and they put the installation dvd into their dvd drive (by Apple). Then the windows installed perfectly fine.
When asked they said it must be the problem of DVD and I found out that it actually is the cause. Apple products require dual layer optical drives but in general the optical drives we buy can only read single layer dvds. So I got to fix the problem by borrowing their dvd drive in genius bar and now i m good to go.....
    Hope this helps

You cannot disable UEFI if your Windows 7 was installed with UEFI.  The System Reserved partition is different for UEFI than for legacy BIOS and your Windows 7 system will not boot in the legacy BIOS mode.
Booting from DVD should not give you the Windows logo because it should boot into the DVD setup mode.

  • Media Center PC m7250n hangs on Windows 7 final install phase.

When I try to install Windows 7 (32bit) on my m7250n, the process comes to the final “Completing Installation” phase and hangs.
The hang apparently occurs immediately after the boot-up into Win7 that commences this final phase. The progress bar just stops and holds still even after about 7 hours.
Before doing this install, I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser. The resulting report claimed the computer could handle Windows 7. The report did, however, point out that my C: drive had insufficient room left for Windows 7. No big deal for me. I planned on putting Windows 7 on a different 82GB hard drive.
So this just meant that I had to pick the Custom Install option in the install process.
However, the 82GB hard drive in question is connected to the computer through a PCI adapter card. Therefore, the installer requests that I give it a path to a driver for that PCI card. So I do this. It is a Vista driver. The installer accepts this and allows me to continue the install process.
Everything works fine until the hang at the final phase.
OK, here's the info on the computer:
HP Media Center m7250n; Asus P5LP-LE/HP Lithium-UL8E; Phoenix AwardBIOS v3.17
    Intel Pentium D 2.8Ghz MPU
    3GB RAM

First Channel Device 1 = None [SATA connection I can't use]
Second Channel Device 0 = None [SATA connection I can't use]
Second Channel Device 1 = None [SATA connection I can't use]
    Third Channel Device 0 = IDE; Quantum Fireball lct15 30; 30GB; NTFS; Windows XP SP3; Drive C:/sda
    Third Channel Device 1 = IDE; WDC WD800BB-75DKA0; 80GB; Linux Ubuntu 14.04.1;sdb
PCI IDE Adapter Card = Promise Technology Ultra133 TX2; BIOS 2.20.0.15; installed at PCI2 slot
PCI IDE Adapter Card Device 0 = IDE; Maxtor 6 Y080P0; 82GB; NTFS; Drive I:/sdc (where I tried to put Windows 7)
PCI IDE Adapter Card Device 1 = None
PCI IDE Adapter Card Device 2 = IDE; Hewlett-Packard DVDRW 1035r; Drive D:/sr0
PCI IDE Adapter Card Device 3 = None
Since the optical drive is also attached through this PCI IDE adapter card, I cannot boot from optical drives. This means I am running the Windows 7 installation disc from within a Windows XP session, with the AutoRun option.
    The cards:
PCIEX16 = Video Card, ATI Radeon x300se, enabled & connected to 2 monitors
PCI1 = TV Tuner & Video Capture Card, Hauppauge WinTV PVR 26xxx, proposed future use
PCI2 = PCI IDE Adapter Card, Promise Technology Ultra133 TX2
PCI3 = 56K Modem, Lucent Win Modem, enabled & connected to phone line
On board NIC enabled and connected to LAN & internet
On board sound circuit enabled and connected to audio equipment
So anyway, does anyone have any clues what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Thanks for the suggestions, erico.
I made and installed from a USB thing as you suggested. While it was not the solution to my problem, it did help things go faster, I suspect.
The real solution was to install a hard drive to a native motherboard connector, and install Windows 7 to that hard drive. Apparently, Windows 7 cannot install to a hard drive connected through a PCI adapter card, in spite of accepting a link to a driver for that adapter card and being able to copy files to it and execute most of the install process to such a hard drive.
So yes, I did manage to install Windows 7 successfully.
But there was a bit of a glitch. The installer did not enter Windows 7 into the windows MBR on the hard drive containing Windows XP. This meant for for several of the final Windows 7 re-boots in the install process, I had to direct my computer to the correct disc to boot from, from the booting BIOS. And when installation was complete, I still had to use the boot BIOS to boot into Windows 7.
How to fix this I know not. It must take some special expertise about MBR's and stuff.
Fortunately for me, I didn't need to mess with it because I just so happen to have Ubuntu installed on the computer already, which uses the GRUB2 boot menu thing. All I needed to do was boot into Ubuntu and use the GRUB Customizer utility to add the WIndows 7 to the GRUB2 boot menu. All is well.

  • Snow Leopard and Windows 7 - Unable to locate CD/DVD drivers to install

    hi,
I am using Boot Camp to install Windows 7, and when the installation starts, I get an error message/ popup window that states: "Unable to locate CD/DVD drivers...".
I can't eject the CD, or figure out which drivers it needs, & how to get them.
I've noticed a lot of people are having this same issue with various PC manufacturers and various releases of Windows 7...
Some people have successfully avoided this by installing off of a USB drive. I am wondering if it's at all possible to install Windows 7 / Boot Camp with a USB drive... or if there is another solution to this problem.
    thanks
    ben

    hi,
i'm replying again to my own question with more info
basically i inserted the snow leopard and the mac os x install dvd's that shipped with my early 2009 nehalem mac pro tower into a windows machine. i was able to "explore" the dvd using windows and found some boot camp support folders which contained drivers.
i copied these drivers to a thumb drive.
so now, during the windows 7 install... i have the option of navigating to these drivers on my thumb drive.
however - i don't see any potential drivers for the dvd burner/ superdrive...
here is the list of companies/ drivers supplied:
    ATI
    Broadcom
    Marvell
    Apple
    Cirrus
    MotorolaSetup.exe
    Asix
    IDT SigmaTel
    NVidia
    Atheros
    Intel
    RealTekSetup.exe
it is my understanding that the superdrive is hitachi...
the information on this drive inside the system profiler is as follows:
    "HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH41N:
    Firmware Revision: PQ05
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds"
i really wish i knew more info about this drive and where to get windows drivers for it so i can install windows 7 on my mac pro.
this is the stock drive that shipped with this mac pro. i find it strange that no one else is running into this issue?
    thanks
