[RESOLVED] vlc/mplayer Segmentation fault

I was using an NVIDIA 7900GT which has since broke and now I have reverted to my NVIDIA 7300GS.
I have been using archlinux for many years. When I received the upgrade from the nvidia-100.14.19-6-i686 package, X would not load. I looked around for a PKGBUILD and rebuilt the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages (ver 100.14.19). Everything worked great, but I had no idea why. I thought that it was just a nvidia thing that was not compatible with my machine/card. Over the course of time, I found package nvidia-100.14.23-1-i686, and that worked for me and became my default video driver package to rebuild for every new kernel upgrade. I was trying the other nvidia updates that archlinux provided also, but X would still not load.
So then package nvidia-173.14.05-4-i686 came out and I was not going to let it lick me anymore. I was going to figure this out. I made sure that there was no "XF86Config" or "xorg.conf" in "/etc/X11", and X loaded. Success right? Well kinda. I was able to login to Gnome, but I had no compiz, and I could not open vlc, mplayer and several other media applications. The main error I was getting when running the application from and terminal was "Segmentation Fault". In dmesg, I would get:

I was totally pissed for several days because I had to use Metacity, and found that totem was able to play media (audio and video) fine. So I gave in again, and let that setup ride for a week. Well then today came around, and I was going to get this fix one way or another and get Compiz and my media apps working again. I did a search in the terminal for "libnvidia-tls.so.100.14.23" and found it still living in "/usr/lib/tls/". All that was in that directory was that file and a symlink to it. "libnvidia-tls.so.173.14.05" was in "/usr/lib/", but I guess just not being used or seen. I did a "# rm /usr/lib/tls" and reinstalled the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages (ver 173.14.05) to be safe.
Compiz and my media apps are now running fine. I have written all of this down just in case anyone else runs into this problem. I have done tons of google searching and could not find any answer to this. If you have any comments about this, please let me know.

guys, Im tired of this...
I had some troubles with last update which were solved here
and now I have another couple of problems :
mplayer, vlc says segmentation fault any time Im trying to play a video.
KDE desktop enviroment is terribly painted (flux is ok)
glxgears (in flux) gives 60 fps !! (it was 250 before, I know that somethink was wrong but I could not figure it out before and now its.....)

yes, thats right...
but post above contain all that vlc and mplayer gives to me in console
also dolphin is crashing when its trying to preview any video file, amarok is unable to start too...

Built VLC from PKGBUILD = Segmentation Fault

I tried to create a package for VLC from https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … ckages/vlc . Downloaded these files, ran makepkg, installed with yaourt -U , and the installed VLC gives me segmentation fault. I tried running it with valgrind, inside valgrind it runs ok. When i download the sources and compile it myself with almost the same configure script as is in PKGBUILD (only changed --prefix=/tmp/vlc), outside makepkg, compiled package works, so compiler and libraries should be fine. What can be problematic? I was thinking problems are with CFLAGS/CPPFLAGS/CXXFLAGS, so I removed -march=native -mtune=native from /etc/makepkg.conf but that was not successful either..

SMPlayer - Segmentation Fault - QXcbShmImage: shmget() failed (22)

Hello,
when I'm watching a video playlist in SMPlayer there comes a time the video ends and when smplayer have to go to the next video it exit just with the "segmentation fault" meesage. This does not happens always, just randomly. I've downloaded the latest built from smplayer in order to see if it was solved but it isn't. With this latest smplayer build I got more exit information. I haven't been able to compile the latest version of MPlayer in order to discard MPlayer (I got this compiling error: make: *** [libvo/vo_gif89a.o] Error 1)
And searching the internet there are references to Qt, so I think its a Qt bug instead a smplayer or mplayer or nvidia bug, but I don't know anything about Qt and I don't know/understand what to do with this information. I've got installed qt4 and qt5-base and more qt packages but I don't know which can be relevant
I've also tried to change the output video driver from vdpau (I've got an nvidia card) to xv but the bug still happens.
With vlc I have no problems watching the same playlists.
What can I do?

Root.sh failure during Grid install - segmentation fault for clscfg

Hi anyone got any idea how to resolve the following error during execution of root.sh on second node of a RAC installation. I see there is a failure when clscfg -localadd is run - perhaps this is the start of the issue. I have no idea what this command is doing

Segmentation fault
If I start up easytag while running KDE3 (kdemod), I get this problem every time. I have tried running it with openbox and it runs without a problem. I have deleted .easytag and reinstalled, but the problem continues.
EDIT: Installing libbonoboui resolves the problem. It looks like the there is a dependency issue here, I'll file a bug.

Conduit crashes with segmentation fault

I just installed a fresh install of Arch Linux with xfce installed. Everything is up and running. I wanted conduit to synchronize evolution data with my desktop. I was using Xubuntu and everything was fine. But Arch is 2x faster than xubuntu...
The compilation of conduit went right, reported no error.
I run XFCE but I tried to run it from gnome also just if it was an dependency error... Didn't work. I tried to install firefox from sources since it was an run-mozilla.sh segmentation error. Didn't work.

Desesperate new arch user.

I've rebuilt conduit with webkit and GIO support by patching the file defs.py.in in the source directory, however the segfault still occurs on my machine. The only difference is that the run-mozilla.sh error is not given but instead a blank line. Perhaps this is related to a specific plugin not working correctly.
edit: this is also occuring with conduit 0.3.14 release. I may try the SVN version later today.

Segmentation fault from libclntsh.so.10.1

I try to use Pro*C arrays and have Segmentation fault from libclntsh.so.10.1.
First I accumulate values in arrays and then INSERT them with help of      EXEC SQL FOR :m_entries_num
          INSERT INTO ETCASHMGR.BUY_ORDER
statement. If error occurred I try to INSERT values in those arrays in DB using loop look this:

Segmentation fault when using snapshot isolation with Berkeley DB 6.1.19 and 5.1.29

I have been experimenting with snapshot isolation with Berkeley DB, but I find that it frequently triggers a segmentation fault when write transactions are in progress. The following test program reliably demonstrates the problem in Linux using either 5.1.29 or 6.1.19.

Compilation instructions are at the top of the file. The test program creates a temporary directory in /tmp, opens a new environment with the DB_MULTIVERSION flag, and spawns 8 threads. I understand that this test program, with 8 concurrent (and deliberately conflicting) writers, is not an ideal use case for snapshot isolation, but this can be triggered in other scenarios as well.
You can disable snapshot isolation by toggling the value of the USE_SNAP #define near the top of the source, and the test program then runs fine without it.
Can someone help me to identify the problem?

   We have taken a look at this in more detail and there was a bug in the code.   We have fixed the bug.     We will roll it into our next 6.1 release that we do.   If you would like an early patch that will go on top of 6.1.19, please email me at [email protected], reference this forum post and I can get a patch sent out to you.   It will be a .diff file that apply on the source code and then rebuild the library. Once again thanks for finding the issue, and providing a great test program which tremendously helped in getting this resolved.

Segmentation fault with just one user

Hi,
When I try to close a toolwindow in an application (it's iViewMediaPro), the app crashes. Console says, there's a segmentation fault. This happens only with one useraccount (adminrights). I deleted .pref-files, reinstalled the software, emptied the preferencesfolder in the users library and started the app then, nothing helps.
Any ideas to solve the problem?

Are you implying that you can run that app in other accounts without any problems? If so, then there's corruption or a conflict within the original account, usually associated with preference files. See my response in http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8664734 on how to resolve those.

Apache 2.2.17-2 Segmentation Fault

Hi,
I just upgraded apache to the 2.2.17-2 version and now all my php/mysql pages that have a login ($_SESSION)
crash the server (apache child segfaults):

UPDATE: It works with apache 2.2.17-1 if you stop and start the daemon after the downgrade.

I am running Arch with KDE.
Should it find all those files it is not finding? Could they be part of the problem?

Well, I found a workaround, for those who really need acroread and want it well integrated into the KDE environment.
The solution is to use another KDE look-alike theme, QtCurve, instead of the "problematic" oxygen-gtk for GTK2 applications.
What you have to do is install the following packages from the AUR:
gtk-engines
qtcurve-gtk2
qtcurve-kde
lib32-qtcurve-gtk2
and also lib32-gtk-engines if it isn't resolved as a dependency.
You will also need to install the kde-gtk-config package from the AUR.
Then go to: KDE System Settings > Application Appearance > GTK, select QtCurve as the GTK2 theme and enjoy acroread and other GTK2 applications (well not fully, but the QtCurve theme is OK) integrated into your KDE desktop!
PS1: QtCurve is not (yet?) available for GTK3, so I left oxygen-gtk there.

Sorry, I misunderstood the original question. I thought it was the C compiler (not the C++ compiler) that you were using. The problem you're seeing (I believe) is due to the fact that you're trying to modify static data. The initialization of the character pointer variable 's' creates a pointer to read only (static) data. When you try to change that data with the assignment, you get a segmentation violation.
If, instead, you were to initialize the 's' variable as follows:
