Resolving aliases window comes up
Hi,
I have had a fair number of aliases (20) on my desktop forever. They go to folders mostly, some apps and a few volumes that are not connected. About a month ago, I started to get a Finder window pop up saying the system was resolving that alias when I double click on them. I threw out a Finder pref file (I forget which one) that was recomended on some forum (I forget which one), that didn't help. Went to the Apple Store yesterday for this a few other issues. The "genius" didn't know what to make of it and wasn't even familiar with aliases in the first place. (Called them icons with arrows. Her superior and her called them "shortcuts" too which amused me...) Anyway, she recommended I reinstall the system software. I can do that but thought I'd ask here first. I saw another thread with this problem back in 2011 (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16431534#16431534) but it wasn't resolved, no pun intended.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Creating new aliases will only have the problem return after the file/folder/app has been opened a few times. Logging out made no difference. (I didn't set up a bunch of aliases in one of those other accounts to test them but will if needed.)
FWIW, my desktop folder is 2.29 gb. I have 8 gb ram, 184 gb free on a 500 gb hd.

PS Peripherally related to this thread: I've had an alias to my home folder on my desktop forever. Now I can't create a new one, make an alias is greyed out on the File menu. Remind me how I can do this. Thanks.

For your main problem I would start figuring out if this problem is system wide or just in your user account.
You can make a temporary account to test with.
If it's only in your account, something must be corrupt there. But I wouldn't know what to look for. Maybe a higher level forum member can tune in here. If it's system wide I'd personally do a reinstall, which is likely less work than figuring out what the problem is exactly...
Maybe you can do a safe boot, can take some time, as your disk is checked and repaired. Might help. Doesn't hurt.
For the second (PS) problem:
You can create an alias of your Home folder by holding Option + Command keys and then drag your home folder to the desktop. (this shortcut works for any alias you want to make.)
! Don't drag from the sidebar !
drag from this location:
Macintosh HD (or whatever your internal disk is called) > Users > Your homefolder.

Troubleshooting note
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
Creating a new User-Account and log into this
This forces iMovie to create all pref. and cache files new and error free
Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
a Codec is used that doesn't work (even though iMovie and/or iDVD tries to / they fail in the end)
version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
USB-flash-memories - usually do not work
Net-work connected hard disks - usually do not work (most often not fast enough and WRONGLY FORMATTES as DOS etc)
iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie. When iMovie starts-up it first look trough this iPhoto library and if faulty it all Halt’s.
This You do by
First - close iPhoto
Secondly - on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
Thirdly - now select all five options presented
THEN - WAIT a long long time (>20 hours are not strange)
free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
Screen must be set to million-colors
Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

I am totally baffled!
All of a sudden since yesterday, when trying to open any alias either on the desktop or inside a finder folder, there is a slight pause and a window appears saying “Resolving alias to XXX folder”
Also, since not long ago finder started showing something it never showed before: “Recoverd files” folders in the trash.
Today, there were two “Recoverd files” folders and an “ImageDebug” folder (first time I've ever seen one like this), the latter containing the following file:
•an "AutoPosToneMap.text" file which when opened showed this:

The two “Recoverd files” folders were:
•MaglevExpressTemp223, an empty folder
•MaglevExpressTemp289, an empty folder
When emtying the trash, the progress window started showing over 50 files to be erased, even though there were apparently only 4 files and folders!
I've read most posts labeled "resolving aliases" but none gave me a hint of what to do to stop this from happening and revert to how the finder was behaving before yesterday.
Any idea what to do?

Items in temp storage at shutdown are moved to trash as 'recovered files'. So it's a by-product of software which either did not (or could not) quit gracefully, or is not very well written.

My guess: you're using an HP scanner or all-in-one or printer, and/or have installed or used HP scanner or printer driver. Search the communities for 'maglevexpress'.

When a pop up window comes up it is - search bookmarks and history window! I cannot log into my bank as login button should open new window to log in but I get the search page. I cannot see larger images as again I get the search bookmarks and history page etc. Happens on all options that should open new page. I am so frustrated, this has been happening since Firefox updated itself 2 days ago to Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C) was fine before that. using windows vista. Whenever I reply to an e-mail the window comes up but without the paper airplane in the top left corner. The only way to send the reply is to close it and save as a draft. Then I can pull it up from Drafts and it has the airplane on it.

These are your options:
1. Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.
Advantages: Always works, if library damage is causing the problem and the backup is intact.
Disadvantages: Impossible if you don't have a backup. All changes made since the backup are lost.
2. Repair or rebuild the library. Be sure to back it up first.
Advantages: May solve the problem with no loss of data.
Disadvantages: May fail. May take a long time if the library is large.
3. Scavenge the library with a third-party application called "iPhoto Library Manager," which you can find in a web search. From the application's menu bar (not the iPhoto menu bar), select Library ▹ Rebuild.
Advantages: All images should be preserved.
Disadvantages: All books, calendars, and slideshows will be lost. -
Firefox is my default browser on my new laptop, with OS Windows 7. I've now had several instances where a Windows popup comes up saying Firefox has developed a problem and may have to close. It also indicates Windows "is looking for a solution to the problem." No solution is found, however, and Firefox is forced to close, with the happy notice that Windows will let me know if it finds a solution to the problem. If there is any tech data on the crash, I'm not sure where to find it, and no Firefox crash report window comes up. I thought it was an anomaly the first time, but this has now occurred at least 4 times in the past several days.

i am trying to download itunes 10.7. i have windows vista 32-bit. when i click on download. the pop up window comes up and ask to save or cancel, and then the webpage says thank you for downloading. it hasn't downloaded it. what can i do to fix this?
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

Save As window comes up when saving a WebI document another user modified
When trying to save a Web Intelligence document in the "Web" mode (not the java "Rich Internet Application" mode), users get a "Save As" window if another user was the last one to save the document. The user can simply select the same location and "overwrite" the existing report. They can also use the Rich Internet Application mode instead, since this does not have the same issue. After that, the same user can continue to save the report as usual, until another user saves it. The user has full control permissions to the document and to the folder.
This doesn't seem like it would be a big deal, but most of our users access reports using hyperlinks from other websites, which opens the document directly in the web mode; and they just make simple changes like selecting a different value in an input control. If the Save As window comes up, it takes them to their Favorites folder, and they usually don't know which public folder the report is stored in.I can not print anything from Firefox but on IE everything prints just fine. I happen to like Firefox a whole lot better so would appreciate a solution to my problem.

I bought a new iMac 27" yesterday, running with Mavericks OS. Attempting to download Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium. Loaded software from discs. When I check for updates they fail to install. A window comes up saying "Some updates failed to install." Then under each applications it says "There was an error downloading this update. Please quit and try again later." Have done this several times. Suggestions?

Hi Everyone I have a problem where
Java Applet Certificate Signing Window comes up BLANK!
It comes up as blank gray panel with the java logo on the upper left.
the title bar says "Java Plugin Security Warning"
And I can't figure out what to do to make it come up properly. I tried double clicking it dragging it around to make it repaint itself nothing happens.
I have tried clearing temp files deleting files from IE, deleting cookies, clearing the history.
Now i'm going to restart the computer and see if it works.
It is supposed to give me buttons.
1. Accept for this session
2. Grant
3. Deny
4. View Certificate
But does anyone have any idea how to address this issue ?
StephenYou might try setting the trace level to 5 in the plugin's Java console and looking what it spits out while the applet is launching. I remember seeing loads of information in there including stuff relating to certificate validation. It might be helpful.
The trick to getting this info during start up:
1) get the plugin to load by directing your browser to page with a known applet. Write your own little stub applet and load it or go to http://java.sun.com/. There's an applet on that page.
2) bring up the plugin's console if it's not already and then go to a blank page.
3) set the trace level to 5 in the console. (just press the 5 key).
4) go to the page that launches your applet. You'll have tons of information pour out in your console.
