Resource Busy When Trying to Image Macbook Airs

I've gotten myself into something of a dilemma. I have two MacBook Airs both running Lion, one that is set up as I want and one that hasn't been used yet. I've made an image file of the first computer and want to use it to "repair" the second.
So I was going along with the Disk Utility (definitely using the Migration Assistant in the future for other laptops but right now I just want to get out of the mess I've made of this first attempt) and I erased the data on the second drive. When I went to restore it, however, I run into issues.
I get to the restore tab of the Disk Utility and can see the second Air connected via thunderbolt cable so I drag that to the destination and drag the image file I have on the first Air's desktop to the source. At this point I have booted the second Air while holding T and just see the dancing Thunderbolt icon on the screen.
Anyway, I hit restore and confirm that I want to erase and replace, enter my password, but then I am told that Disk Utility has to scan the "disk image" before it can restore. I press Scan Disk Image and get the error: Unable to scan Macintosh HD (Resource busy). I've tried unmounting the drive and repeating those steps but I just get the same error.
How can I get myself out of this mess? The second Air is just empty now and it does not have a CD drive to boot from an OS CD (which I don't have anyway). I just want to restore it using the image on the first Air. How can I get around this resource busy error?
Thanks a bunch!

I found the answer here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1215748 Thought I'd share it here.
The key is that you insure that the SOURCE image is the one selected on the left hand side NOT the destination, prior to clicking Restore.
1. Select Image as Source
2. Set correct Destination
3. Insure the SOURCE image is selected on the left hand side
4. Click Restore.
5. Select Scan when prompted
6. Success (hopefully)
Hope this helps

  • Getting "resource busy" when trying to copy from an external USB drive

Hi, I have an external (Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB) USB drive attached to my MacBook Pro (2009) running 10.6. I am trying to copy the files back to my laptop. However, when I copy them in the Finder, I get a message saying that some of the files are "in use". So I even tried copying using Terminal, and often I get this kind of message:

After this happens, when I do "ls /Volumes/MyDriveName" I get zero results, nothing. I cannot unmount or eject the USB drive. I have to physically kill power to it, and then plug it back in. Then my MBP recognizes it again, and I can work with it for a short time before I hit this problem again. Copying some files works, but mostly they do not. I hope I have not lost these files.
I ran Disk Utility, and it can't do anything with this drive... it keeps saying it cannot unmount it.
Oddly, I can "ls" every file in every directory on this drive after I reconnect it (i.e. until the problem happens). So it seems like my data is sort of there, at least the directory is.
Is there something more robust than Disk Utility that I can try? Any idea why I cannot eject the disk? And especially, what this "Resource busy" and "in use" message is about? This is coming straight after a reboot, and it only happens for SOME files, so it's not likely to be an obvious usage by some open app.

Hmm, check out this program http://www.hamsoftengineering.com/products/wkm/wkm.html ... it might lead to some more clues. It seems like as soon as you plug it in, the system latches onto it. I'm guessing because it's an iMovie file, which OS X scans for, so all applications have the ability to grab that media that it's messing things up.
Suggestions...copy those files, and rename them.
Check out the app above to see what's holding onto the files.

  • When I connect my Macbook air to my TV, using a Mini Display Port/HDMl adaptor and an HDMl cable, the only thing that appears on the TV screen is the Air's background screen,

When I connect my Macbook Air to my TV via the thunderbolt outlet and using a Mini Display Port/HDMl adaptor, the only image that appears on the TV screen is that of my Air background. There is obviously a signal getting through to the TV, but it is not sending images of anything else, and am unable to watch video through my Air. Any advise/suggestions?

This is called "extended desktop mode".  It's an extension of the desktop off to the right (by default) of your MBair screen.  Grab an app and drag it off the right side of your MBair screen and it will appear on the TV.
To mirror your MBair screen on the TV you can press Command F1.  This will toogle between mirror and extended desktop.
You can find all the settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.

  • How can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air?

how can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air? i dont know my imessages to pop up on my laptop when it turns on. But i dont want to disable imessage totally on my macbook.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that Messages is closed when you turn off your MacBook. This is so important because, by default, OS X will reopen all opened apps the next time you start your Mac.
Apart from that, when you go to  > Shut Down, or  > Restart, in the window you see to restart or turn off your MacBook, unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". This will avoid that your Mac opens all opened apps the next time you start the MacBook, so Messages won't start automatically at startup

  • When I open my MacBook Air the keyboard comes up along with the screen and does not stay still?!

When I open my MacBook Air the keyboard comes up along with the screen and does not stay still. So I need to hold down the keyboard while i open it. Other than that it works fine despite the fact that the fan noise some times is loud and sometimes it's getting warm at the base. I wonder if this can be fixed if i go to one of the apple branches.

Yes. Take the computer to the Apple store to have it fixed.

I purchased keynote, numbers, and pages when i bought my macbook air in late september. the december update will not load because it says i do not own the software and returns an error messgae 100. i have read manuals and looked over the web but i cannot figure out how to get this software update to identify that i do own these three pieces of software. they are installed and usable. any ideas would be appreciated before i call apple support.
This is my first mac so i am still learning...
    thanks

First, make sure you are logged into the App Store with the same AppleID that you used to purchase the apps.
If that is not it, look in the App Store under Purchases. Are they there?
If not, go into your account in App Store and click the link to show hidden purchases.
If they are still not there, use the support link in the App Store.
If they do show up, copy all the apps to an external drive, then remove them from your Mac. Go to the App Store, Purchases, and install from there.

  • "Shared Resources error" when trying to install Photoshop Elements 11

I keep getting installation error "Shared Resources error" when trying to install Photoshop Elements 11 (Windows 7).  Any advice will be appreciated..

    Welcome to the forum, Ted,
Here's an older "Shared Technologies" thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3155897#3155897
But, I am not sure that we were ever able to help the OP, and they never reported back with the responses from Adobe. Still, might be a tip that is useful.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] I mis-spoke. The OP and another user with the same error WERE helped. What I saw initially was yet another poster, who was going to contact Adobe, but never came back to the thread. In the case of the OP and another users, the issue was caused by having Adobe Bridge, included with other Adobe programs, like Photoshop and Premiere Pro, running. When they killed that, the installation went well.

    Hi
Does your Macbook support Airplay?    What year is it?  Typically mid 2011 and newer Macbooks offer Airplay capability.

When playing WOW my MacBook air's fan comes on and stays on until shortly after I stop playing.  is this normal?  Never comes on at any other time.  Thanks.

Thank you, but I followed all instructions to reset the SMC and it has not helped. Looks like I'll have to take it in to Apple for repair.

  • When I connect my MacBook Air to iPads through a powered USB hub the power cord for the hub explodes and trips the fuse on the building. I've tried different iPads, cords, power points to no avail.

When I connect my mac air to some iPads through a powered USB hub for VPP/Configurator, the power point for the hub blows out (tripping the fuse in the building). I've tried different iPads, cords, power points and of course hubs. Also the computer has a habit of shutting down when any type of USB device is removed from it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've done some experimenting, and this is what I've found out:
    1) The problem persists when I reformatted the USB HDD devices to ExFAT, so the problem apparently wasn't due to NTFS for Mac OS X by Paragon.
    2) The problem persists even when BackBlaze is paused, so I don't think that it's due to BackBlaze.
    3) The internet cuts out as soon as data begins transferring either to or from a USB HDD device and won't reconnected until I eject and unplug the device.
    4) The problem affects data transfers through either USB port.
