Resource forks -- are they what is slowing CCCloner when backing up?

I've been testing CCCloner and SilverKeeper as backup utilities. I've used SK for the last 8 years and haven't noticed anything amiss. In my situation, it searches for changes during an incremental backup about 8 times faster than CCC. Mike Bombich, the author of CCC, has responded to my query about why this is the case with a detailed explanation (see http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=15540, last post), part of which reads:
For the purpose of this conversation, though, the gist is that you have many files that have two data structures -- a data fork and a resource fork. Each of these data structures can change independently of each other. Resource forks, however, do not have modification dates -- the modification date of a file only refers to the data fork. As a result, backup utilities have a choice among three methods for determining whether to backup the resource fork as they scan your filesystem:
a) copy every resource fork, every time, just to be on the safe side
b) copy the resource fork of a file whenever the data fork of the file changes, or when the size of the resource fork has changed
c) compare a checksum of the resource fork on the source and target to determine if the resource fork has actually changed
According to Mike, SK uses method 2 whereas CCC uses Method 3, explaining why it is so much slower for my backups -- because 36,000 of my 58,000 files have "extended attributes" which are probably resource forks.
My question arises because I want to make sure the SK is accurately backing up my PS files. Is it possible that a utility using Method 2, could miss some change in a resource fork of a PS file? To put it another way: are there any instances where PS could change a resource fork, but the data fork is unchanged and the size of the resource fork is unchanged, resulting in Method 2 not backing up that particular file?
I must have backed up in excess of 100,000 PS files over the years, and haven't noticed any problems. But then again, I have rarely had to call on my backups.

Why not use Time Machine instead of some "third party hack" for your backups?
CCCloner is worthless garbage IMHO. I tried to restore a system with it after a HD replacement and it wouldn't work because the owner changed user name and/or password on reinstall of the OS. Thus it wouldn't recognize the Library to copy the files. In fact, it wouldn't grant access to the backup, claiming permissions conflicts. I had to run a CHMOD and CHOWN from Single User Mode to be able to get to backed up files, but the Library and Applications were useless.
From what I know of it, CCC is OK for cloning a brand new hard drive to put in a new machine, but beyond that it's way too complicated in what it does and how.
As far as PS changing data or resource forks, I was never aware that it did. I could be mistaken.
This question would be better answered by the developers of SilverKeeper though.

If they're actually calling it an "iPad" then no, it's not legal since "iPad" is a trademark (though who owns the trademark is currently in dispute). You can notify Apple's legal department here:

  • Entire text history disappears after sending MMS - Where are they, how do I get them back

I was attempting to send a picture via MMS, the picture was unedited, no third party app was used for editing or sending the picture. When it was sending, the apple icon appeared on a black background as if it was rebooting. When the reboot was complete, my entire history of messages was gone. When I search for messages on spotlight search, they appear - so they are still somehow in the phone. But when I select one from the search for viewing, it takes me to a "new message" page as if the text no longer exsists. I tried turning the phone off, removing the SIM card, leaving it for several minutes, then restarting. I am still opperating on ios 4, and have not attempted a restore yet. I am hoping to retrieve the lost messages, since apparently they are still being stored and remembered by some part of my phone. Why did this happen, and is there any way to save my message history? There are quite a few conversation I really want back. I would also like to know why my phone would do this and how I can prevent it from happening again in the future.

The second Google cache link works. To find the file in Windows, in Firefox click "Help", then "Troubleshooting Information". In the new tab that opens click the box "Open Containing Folder" under Application Basics and next to Profile Directory. Close Firefox. Find the file "localstore.rdf" (in the Windows folder you just opened) and delete. Open Firefox and customize your toolbars. Should be the last time you have to do it.

  • When I upgraded to FF4, the "refresh" and "MSN" button disappeared. Where are they, how do I get them back?

The "refresh" button and the button for my homepage appeared on the line just under the Menu Bar. Also, the MSN icon appeared on the fourth line under the Menu Bar. All three are now missing How do I get them back, or do I have to uninstall FF4. Why does an upgrade have to change toolbars without giving me notice?

You can find the Home button at the far right end of the Navigation Toolbar.
Firefox 4 uses a combined Stop/Reload/Go button that is positioned at the right end of the location bar.<br />
During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button.<br />
If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.<br />
You can middle-click that Reload button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.
To move the Stop and Reload buttons to their position to the left of the location bar you can use these steps:
    * Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
    * Drag the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position to the left of the location bar.
    * Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
    * Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

  • Extremely slow speed when backing up onto Airport Extreme disk

I have a wireless network set up with the Network Extreme basestation. The basestation has a 500 GB iomega drive attached via the USB 2.0 port. The disk comes up just fine, but when I try to use it as a backup disk from my iMac using SuperDuper!, I get an effective peak copy speed of 1.9 MB/s, and it takes multiple hours to perform a ~30 GB backup. The disk is Mac formatted.
For comparison, if I plug the disk directly into the USB port on my iMac, the peak effective speed is ~15 MB/s and the backup takes 35 min.
The iMac and the basestation are both running 802.11n, with an effective speed of 130 MB/s.
On the off chance that it was the disk imaging process that was slowing things down, I have run SuperDuper! with disk imaging back to the iMac's HD rather than the Airport Extreme HD and it runs at ~20 MB/s.
    To review:
    - Trying to backup to the Airport disk runs really, really slowly and takes forever
    - It's not the network speed, the HD speed or the software.
What's up? Anyone else have this problem? One of the reasons I bought the Airport Extreme was to use it as a network back-up HD. If it going to take a day to copy a full iMac disk, then this is clearly unsatisfactory.

I would echo Glyn's assessment. One needs to keep in mind that Apple designed this product as a low cost device to meet the typical requirements of a home user (ie streaming of music, sharing of a few files, and backups without time constraints). If one needs the performance levels typical of a network file server, then this is the wrong product to use. Perhaps Apple's marketing information for this device should make that a bit clearer.

  • Mac SLOW performance when backing up

Whenever my mac is backing up over wifi to my Time Capsule the performance is terrible! Everything is just SO slow - switching windows, opening programs, sending email everthing!!!!
So to combat this i click 'Stop Backing Up'. Then everthing is back to normal
But low and behold in a few minutes it attempts another back up!!!! Grrrr
    1) Is there a way to combat this performance degradation?
    2) OR schedule back ups for evenings or when i want??!
I use my mac all day long for work and it's having a real impact on my productivity. I could just turn the Time Capsule OFF but that would just defeat the object of backing up. I just know i'd forget to turn it on again.
I'm beginning to get really sick of seeing those spinning arrows!! >:(
    Alex

Nothing improper with backing up manually. I can't understand why users (except in special circumstances) would want to constantly backup. Do a manual backup when you go the sleep. Just turn TM off and select it from the TM icon top file menu.

  • Preventing File Previews in Resource Fork

Hi, when I place a zip file on the desktop and extract some images, the images get previews immediately. However, the file sizes also get bigger. I guess the resource fork stores the previews. Is there a way to prevent this? This does not seem to happen on my 10.6 OS but happens on 10.5.

The only way a preview is stored in the resource fork is if you are using some third-party software that puts one there. Finder previews are not stored in the resource fork. They are not stored in the file at all.

  • Strip resource forks and .DS_Store files from folder

I'm transferring stuff from my Mac to a Windows machine using a FAT32 formatted keydrive, and want to eliminate the various dot files from folders before I copy them to the Windows box. I had tried using a Terminal command, which was tedious and at one point I mistyped something and managed to nuke one of the folders on the drive. After a search, I found this script at MacOSXHints:
    on run
display dialog "Drag a removable disk icon here to have it cleaned and ejected"
    end run
    on open selectedItem
-- get a text version of the volume name and remove the trailing colon :
set volumeName to selectedItem as string
set volumeName to characters 1 thru (the (length of volumeName) - 1) of volumeName as string
if (list disks) contains volumeName then
    do shell script "find '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "' -name '.DS_Store' -exec rm '{}' \\;"
    do shell script "find '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "' -name '._*' -exec rm '{}' \\;"
    try
do shell script "rm -rd '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "/.Trashes'"
do shell script "rm -rd '/Volumes/" & volumeName & "/.TemporaryItems'"
    end try
    try
tell application "Finder" to eject disk volumeName
    end try
    end if
    end open
It worked great, but took a bit of time to run. I no longer need to clean the whole drive again, just specific folders I add to the drive now. Unfortunately I don't actually know how to write Applescript, I can just sometimes adapt an existing script to my needs, but this adaptation is beyond my meagre abilities. Last night I was copying a couple of folders to the drive, then using the Terminal "find execute remove" command to get rid of the dot files after the fact. I would like to have an Applescript droplet, so that I drop the folder onto it and the resource forks are stripped off and the .DS_Store files are removed before I copy the folder to the key drive.
    Any help appreciated!

Make a duplicate of the folder you want to transfer on your hard disk, and then run the following on the duplicate:
    on open droppedItems
    repeat with anItem in droppedItems
if (folder of (info for anItem)) is false then
display dialog (anItem as string) & " was not proccessed." & return & return & "Folders only please"
    else
do shell script "find " & quoted form of POSIX path of anItem & " -name \".DS_Store\" -exec rm '{}' \\;"
do shell script "find " & quoted form of POSIX path of anItem & " -name \"._*\" -exec rm '{}' \\;"
do shell script "ditto --norsrc " & quoted form of POSIX path of anItem & " '/Volumes/volumename/pathname/'"
    end if
    end repeat
    end open
The second do shell script line may not be needed in this variation.

  • Resource forks show in file browser

    Hi all,
When I FileIn and open the file browser, along with the files I see their resource forks (if they're still called that) - the same file name but prefixed with "._"
Is there a way to NOT see these files?
    TIA

    G5 dual 2.5Ghz 2Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   FCP 5.0.4

    Zeb,
    thanks for your reply.
I use the filter button, but I'm not aware of a wildcard that says "show me EVERYTHING BUT" the following. Remember, I want to see everything but the resource fork files.
I had a look at p374 as you suggested.
I will need a couple of weeks to try this stuff out, as I have never touched a shake pref before, but from an initial reading it looks as tho all these prefs do is set a default filter state in order to bring up specific file types. I don't want to bring up a specific file type, I may want a .mov, or a .tiff or whatever, I just don't want to see those darn resource forks in the list.
    cheers

  • My mailboxes disappeared.   Where are they?

I just installed an update to 10.7.3.  Then my mailboxes, excpet for the generic ones that come with mail, disappeared.  Where are they & how can I get them back?

Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.

  • I'm trying to understand SYNC. How do I know if my addons I add to one computer or another are sync'd and not deleted when syncing occurs.

Maybe the question has been answered, but I havent seen an answer in a way I understood.
I have two or three computers I regularly use. I've been with Firefox for years - probably since version 3. Over time I've downloaded old standby add-ons like the popular AdBlock Plus and FireGestures to the more recent add-ons like Pocket and Fox-To-Phone. I've tried to maintain consistency between computers for the by manually downloading the add-ons to each computer. But I havent always been consistent, especially when I download a background program like Sareaholic or something else I dont often use, I kinda download it and forget it. I may later end up realizing "oh I got such-and-such on that other computer, not this one" and so my experience with each computer is unique.
Hence, the beauty of Sync: A take-it-with-you, consistent browsing experience across the board. Am I right so far?
But now I'm confused, especially about pairing, where one computer is added to another so they become linked (ie. synced) in an effort to have the entire browsing experience consistent :
    1) I think I'm going to lose addons. And whatever else I sync because Sync will treat one computer as primary when the pairing process occurs.
    2) What do I pair to what? If I set up the Sync account on computer #1 and later on while sitting at computer #2 decide I want to include it in the sync account and so I initiate a pairing, is computer #2 going to lose it's addons in favor of computer #1 or is it the other way around?
I guess here's a good scenario. Lets say my computers have the following addons:
ALL COMPUTERS: AdBlock Plus, Firegestures, LastPass
and each computer has the following addons:
#1: AdBlock Pop Up Addon, Download Helper, Pocket, Price Blink, X-notfier
#2: AdBlock Pop Up Addon, Pocket, Shareaholic, QuickFox Notes
    #3: Download Helper, X-notifier, Shareaholic, Fox-To-Phone
My sync account was set up on computer #1.
?? What can I expect from initially setting up syncing?
?? Once computers are linked, what can I expect when I download an addon or one computer or another?
    Thank you.
    - Eric

    Hi
Here are a couple of tips as a starter. Choose a piece of music with strong accents. It doesn't necessarily have to have a big drum beat but should have strong hits or musical accents.  To start the edit off, choose sync points from your footage to edit to the musical accents. Then fill in the gaps with other footage.
    That should get you started.

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 - Evil Folders in Reporting Services - What Are They and How to Remove Them

    Hello All,
There are a lot of sub-folders in the http://CentralSiteSCCM/ReportServer. They are like:
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.0
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.1
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.10
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.100
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.1000
Only <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN is properly populated with the correct set of the default folders.
Would you be so kind to advise on:
    What are they?
    How to remove them?
What to do in order for them not to appear any more?
Thank you very much in advance!

    Hi Mike,
I ran into an issue when I did the SP1 upgrade where a majority of our reports were duplicated. I created a script to delete these duplicate reports and I've adjusted it to work for your situation. You can find the original thread here, if you're interested:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmanagergeneral/thread/dc9aa3b4-cea9-4a07-87ca-2795a2dbc04e
You'll need to know your SCCM site code and the server name to run this script.

The first thing you should do is to back up your personal data. It is possible that your hard drive is failing. If you are using Time Machine, that part is already done.
Then, I think it would be easiest to reformat the drive and restore. If you ARE using Time Machine, you can start up from your Leopard installation disc. At the first Installer screen, go up to the menu bar, and from the Utilities menu, first select to run Disk Utility. Completely erase the internal drive using the Erase tab; make sure you have the internal DRIVE (not the volume) selected in the sidebar, and make sure you are NOT erasing your Time Machine drive by mistake. After erasing, quit Disk Utility, and select the command to restore from backup from the same Utilities menu. Using that Time Machine volume restore utility, you can restore it to a time and date immediately before you went on vacation, when things were working.
If you are not using Time Machine, you can erase and reinstall the OS (after you have backed up your personal data). After restarting from the new installation and installing all the updates using Software Update, you can restore your personal data from the backup you just made.
