You can turn off a preference in FCP's user prefs, to bring all windows to front on activation. That way only the windows you click on come in front of the DVD player.
But probably a better way to handle the problem is to use the tab+apple key to bounce back and forth between the two apps. Try that...
My book will work just fine in FCP 5, comes with a ton of media to work with, and will hone your skills I think.
Also Apple's Pro Training series is much the same, and are written well. I'm working now on a training DVD...

Transferring Final Cut Training DVD to HD and then playing from HD
Does the latest (Aug 07) MacBook Pro come with any software that is able to play the contents of Final Cut Pro Studio 2 training DVD after it's contents have been copied to a folder on the HD? I did that to save wear on my Optical Drive and now I can't figure out how to play it . Any help greatly appreciated.
Open up DVD player, then go to file>open DVD media
A dialog box will appear. Find where your folder is where you have copied the DVD to your hard-disk and choose the VIDEO-TS folder. Click on "choose", The DVD player will then start but will show a black screen. Press play on the remote window and the DVD will play. -

G505 DVD/CD Drive and Webcam issues.
Hello.
I have a G505 Lenovo Laptop with the Windows 8.1 Update and I have been ahving issues with the DVD/CD drive, and more recently the Webcam.
The DVD/CD drive doesn't seem to be recognized by the computer despite it coming with the computer I bought. I originally thought it was a faulty connection, but after taking it out, cleaning it and putting it back in the problem persisted. I was told that maybe a program was not letting the drive work, but I have several programs that can detect a disk when instereted so now I don't know what the problem is.
More recently, my internal webcam has stopped working. The light next to the webcam usually comes on at start-up, but now it doesn't even do that. I try going on skype or using the camera app, but all I get is a "Connect a camera to get started". I tried download the camera driver for Windows 8.1 on the Drivers & Downloads page, but everytime I try installing it it says that there is no driver to install.
I also checked the Device Manager to see if maybe the drivers were not installed, but the CD/DVD section doesn't even appear! Under the "Audio, video, and game controllers", only Audio and game controllers appear (Unless that is not the right section).
Does anyone know what's going on? I could really use some helpI had the same problem with the cd not working and i downloaded something that fixed it but i can not remember what.
Now it is bad aagain.

WOW Final CUT PRO Training DVDS! MORE? How to keep QT open (on top) more?
1st of, I've seen the Lynda training for FCP but really enjoy the training DVD's with the surfer (Into The Blue)...
Where can I get more training video DVD's with files like this to help me and build a reel?
Also, part II, is there a way if using a MBP to keep QT DVD ontop so I don't have to keep APPLE TAB to get back to the training DVD? My work flow is follow along and pause DVD then go back, etc.

I am prediciting with OctoMACS due out next year or end of this year, FCP is going to make a splash in some of the AVID marketshare (most of television work that I have seen)..and want to get a jump on FCP.

Software To Create Interactive Training DVD
I have a new project I am working on. A interactive training DVD. I invision a split screen. One side text or still photos. The other side a video demonstration on the subject matter. There needs to be 2 controllers. The 1st would allow the viewer to advance to the previous or next slide. The second controller would allow the viewer to pause, start, stop rewind the video in the second screen. Additionally, there needs to be a "quiz" at the end of each section. The viewer would be asked several questions. Depending on their response, they would advance to the next section or be taken back to a previous section where the correct response is located.
I think I can do it in FCP & DVDSP. Does anyone have any recommendations or better software suggestions.
Oh yeah, I need to release the final product for use on windows machines.

G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)You mentioned DVD is your goal, so your options are extremely limited.
DVDSP or Spruce (which is Windows only and recently aquired by Apple) are really your only choices sub $10k as far as I know.
DVDSP could handle the project, but it would require very good planning and mastery of the scripting environment. You can't save files from DVD, or print pages, or have any serious interactivity beyond navigation scripts. Remember, DVDSP produces DVD's and only DVD's so make sure this is your only delivery medium before moving forward.
Personally, I think this is the kind of thing best suited for an authoring program which is most likely a CD-ROM or Web-based delivery platform. You might see if the DVD thing is set in stone, or if other platforms would be OK.
Macromedia Director is my favorite authoring program. It produces Mac and Windows executable files, not DVD's. Users will have to install Quicktime for Director to display video clips. It's a very powerful program which I use for all of my CD-ROM authoring. I've authored 20+ major CDROM titles including some very nice educational games with this software. It's sort of a container application that holds and displays your content which is often created elsewhere. For instance, I make video clips and fancy transitions in FCP or Motion and place them into the Director Timeline as media assets. Director "directs' the footage and makes everything interactive. I also design the interfaces and graphics in Photoshop, then place them and make them interactive or animated in Director, hence it's designation as the "container". Director 2004 has a very advanced way of communicating with DVD projects and "directing" the DVD footage in ways that DVDSP can't, but I can't recommend this to a novice. It's very advanced workflow.
Macromedia Flash is a more common program, and the latest version has a very nice Video codec so your user will not need to have QuickTime. It makes swf files for the web as well as Mac and Windows Projectors that run off CDROM. In my opinion, Flash is not quite as robust as Director for video and large project management, but that's mostly my own bias. Many people have been able to get amazing work out of Flash.
Macromedia Authorware is another platform similar to Director. I have no experience with this and don't recommend it to a novice.
LiveStage Pro is an older program that uses QuickTime's Authoring language so it's files are actually QuickTime Movs with basic interactivity. It's nice, but the user base is very small and you might have trouble even finding the software.
You could also build the project using Web pages with QuickTime content embeded in a table next to your active text and links. Just load a new page with each section. I use Adobe GoLive to make HTML and recommend it for it's superior workflow with Adobe Applications.

imac g5 Mac OS X (10.4) fcpYes, they will. FCP can handle both PAL and NTSC formats (and a lot more besides!)
Bear in mind though that if you wish to play an NTSC timeline out to an external deck/monitor the deck and monitor will need to be NTSC-capable, which could present you with a problem. But for strictly computer-display learning purposes, you'll not have a problem, -
Safari, iTunes, iPhoto, aim, software update, and more crashing when opened
I have an older MacBook, but the operating system and all the software is up-to-date. For some reason, out of the blue (didn't add any plugins, extensions, or download any new apps), safari started to crash every time that I tried to open it. In hunting around, I noticed that iTunes, iPhoto, Aim, software updates, and more crash in the same exact way. Firefox, Chrome, Quicktime, and microsoft office work fine. I went in and deleted all the plists and emptied the cache, but the problem persists. I also did a disk repair and reset the PRAM. I am able to use all of the above programs in a different user account though, so it has to be something with this specific user account and it's preferences. I just cannot figure it out. Any help would be fantastic. Here is the error message from safari:

Ripple Training DVD vs. DVD Studio Pro Book
I was wondering if anyone knows if the Ripple Training DVD for DVD Studio Pro goes into more detail than the Apple Pro Training Series book does. I have the book for version 3 of DVD SP. But I'm unsure if I'd get that much more out of purchasing the training DVD from Ripple Training.
Any thoughts about the differences between the two training methods?
PS. I realize this is sort of a goofy way to ask this question, but...DVD Studio Pro is worlds more complicated than iDVD, and even though newer versions offer some of the ease-of-use of iDVD, there are many settings you'll have to worry about that just aren't an issue with iDVD. Furthermore, if you're used to AfterEffects, the timeline is probably going to cause you to approach DVD authoring in the same linear fashion as creating video effects, and that will only cause headaches in the future. Most importantly, your Flash/Director experience will probably leave you infinitely frustrated with the limitations of DVD when it comes to creating a "multimedia" interface, because with DVD it's all an illusion. Nothing is loaded into the player beforehand, so everything is a stream, not a routine running on computer hardware that can do several things at once. My best advice is to use iDVD until you need to move forward, or experiment with DVD Studio Pro on your own time until you feel confident enough to do real work with it.

I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud. When I restored my phone from icloud, half of my pics and videos have been deleted, the pics that were restored on my phone are very blurry, and the videos won't play. I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server". I have erased and reset my phone twice, but every time I do it, more pics and videos are deleted. I have backed up to icloud and iphoto, however, some of the pics are no longer on iphoto either. Is there someway to get the videos to play on my phone again? Make the photos not as blurry as they are now and to restore the pics and videos that have been lost? I really would love to have them back, this phone is supposed to be the best and right now it doesn't seem to be. Please help if you can.
I too have noticed that once i restored from iCloud. Pictures blurry and videos wont play!

Best way for multiple users to edit same pics and catalog
Dear All
Please can I pick your brains about how best to arrange things so that my wife and I can edit the same stock of photos (not necessarily simultaneously, which I take it could cause problems).
We will soon have bought (unless advised otherwise!) two Apple MBPs (since we tend after long days at work to edit on the sofa!).
I take the options are roughly: external drives, sticks, cloud, network. In detail …
A. We keep the pics and catalog on an external hard drive which whoever’s editing plugs into their computer. Downside: it’s a bit irritating when editing or showing pics to someone to have to keep an eye to ensure the USB cable doesn’t get knocked out; it’s somehow nicer to be self-contained.
B. Same as A, but using a 512GB or 1TB memory stick instead. Downside: the sticks are still pretty big, so same downside as A, to an extent, and also (is this right?) I’ve been told that memory sticks are relatively unreliable.
C. We keep the pics and catalog in the cloud and wirelessly edit them there. Downside: perhaps impossible, or at any rate too slow?
D. Same as C, but using some sort of on-site server or drive (I’m a bit out of my depth here), perhaps like Apple’s Time Capsule. Downside: perhaps impossible, or at any rate too slow?
Are there other options? For example: is there an option where the pics reside on my MBP’s internal SSD but, in some very easy way I can get them onto an external drive if my wife wants to edit or take them somewhere? (If there is, I should ensure I buy a MBP with a big enough SSD; otherwise, I needn’t worry about that so much.)
Perhaps there’s an option involving smart previews, which I am just beginning to get my mind around?
Any asdvice you have would be MOST welcome.

Even though I have mentioned this a few times, you do NOT need smart previews if the images are available. It's an extra step, completely optional, done only for speed purposes, and to be honest, if your catalog is on a thumb drive, that may be the speed limitation, not the speed of loading photos. In addition, smart previews are stored with the catalog ... I do not think you can put them on a different drive.

Using the SSD for images is not going to produce speed benefits, other than trivial benefits that you probably can't even notice.
a. I take it 1 would deliver pretty good performance. I sometimes worry that it might seem mad to get an MBP with a fast internal ssd if I then don't use that ssd for images! But I guess the internal ssd will still deliver good speed simply in terms of housekeeping, I take it, even if the machine has to go to a stick for the images. Right?

No. Here's a major misundertanding on your part. The speed of the drive where the images are stored has little effect on the performance speed of Lightroom. Ian Lyons did a study, read it for yourself. A network drive would not cause performance issues in Lightroom, unless the network was failing to perform. Wireless? Possibly, but I reject the premise that 2 and 3 are sluggish because of the location of the photos, it may be sluggish because your catalog is on a thumb drive.
d. Even if so, IF I can get a thumb drive which is bigger for the images, there doesn't seem much point going for 2 or 3, and some point in not doing so, i.e. editing smart previews has its limitations, and on option 3 my wife wouldn't be able to edit when I was travelling (unless we'd taken steps in advance to make smart previews of all the relevant pics)? Or perhaps this last point is wrong? Does LR make smart previews, locally, of ALL pictures in the catalog?
Number 2 is a very reasonable solution, even without smart previews, it is fine if you are accessing photos on a network drive. The speed limitation is the speed of accessing the catalog on the thumb drive.
e. What's the best way of backing up the images? I currently back up the catalog BOTH to dropox and to (yet more) external drives that I then take off-site, to the latter of which I also backup the images. I guess that's the best way? Apple's Timecapsule sounds good but wouldn't get anything off-site. And I take it uploading thousands of raw images to the cloud would be either impossible or costly in terms of time or money?
All backup strategies are best when they are automatic (i.e. don't rely on the human user to remember to do it) and backups must go on a different physical disk than the originals. Many people backup to the cloud, see for example, the commercial service called Carbonite. In your backup strategy for Lightroom, you need to make regular, automated bakcups of the images and also of the catalog file. -
Each year I am in charge of making a slideshow of photos and music for my annual company meeting. I always use iDVD to set up my photos and music and then burn the DVD to play at the meeting. Every time I burn the DVD, it blurs right before the transition of the photo. It has always done this and I'm not sure why. It will also make the music glitch in a few spots for about 5 seconds or more. If I burn another DVD to try it again, the glitches will still be there, but in different spots. I've tried the highest quality of DVD's possible and this still happens. What can I do to fix this problem?
Try disabling transitions altogether!
There is a technical reason that this breakup happens - it is to do with how slideshows can be saved within the DVD specification, they can either be recorded as 'video streams' or as a collection of 'still images'.
When you add transitions iDVD has no option but to use a video stream, this can result in terrible 'breakup' because the mpeg 2 encoder isn't designed to handle scenes that are static with a sudden short change. You can see 'artefacts' in the video stream…

'Still image slideshows' avoid the issue altogether by only showing a static image, no video compression is used & because the scene doesn't transition so it shouldn't breakup.
NOTE: Music on the slideshow is irrelevant, both types can use a soundtrack.
I cannot remember if it is possible to force iDVD to only make still image slideshows, I always use DVD Studio Pro to correctly setup DVD's. I'd suggest you use the option to save the DVD to a disk image & then open that disk image so that DVD Player can preview it, that should save on the number of test disks you burn.
If you cannot make it avoid using video streams you may be ether off making your own video slideshow in iMovie & then import that into iDVD. It may eventually look better despite being a video stream!
iDVD isn't really condusive to professional levels of control. -
How can I Burn a Simple DVD with Chapters and Menus out of My Home Videos.
I created an iMovie (unsig iMovie 10.0.2) of my daughter's volleyball season. I inserted markers separating each game day, hoping these would create chapters in my DVD. Then I did some research about DVD burning apps and finally downloaded BURN. With Burn I created a DVD, but this DVD did not have chapters and also did not have a customizable menu. The whole movie ended up as one 2 hour long chapter.
I have hundresd of family vacation on a hard drive stored and would like to start making iMovies of them to put on DVD for easy watching and forbackup storing.
What is a simple way I can burn my iMovie with chapters onto a DVD?
My macbook pro did not come with iDVD so I dont have it.

I ventured into this because I offered this DVD to several team parents, so they are waiting for me to give them the DVD. While I was making it, I added subtitles, showing the game dates, game scores and stats of each player, so it came out really nice. However, not to concern about quality, i have burt the video in a dual layer dvd in SD. I dont have a blue ray burner nor media.
This made me want to do the same with my family vacations vieeos, whic now are a bunch of files in a hard drive, sort them by vacation and add titles like lications to actualy be abel to watch them on a dvd someday.
I have apple tv in the family room, but do not use to watch these videos, will look into that. However, I would still want to make the DVD's.
It seems odd how this, basic feature, has been dropped. I guess apple does not want us to use any more discs.
Still hoping I can do this, if not, I will have to gie away the DVDs with the 2 hour long video in a single chapter. -
My DVD/CD-ROM and floppy disk drives can't read or write contents
When I check through the computor it says verything is working. I have some CD's I wrote data and files to with this computor but for some reason it's showing me that there's nothing on the floppy's or the CD's.
Mined you I have another computer and its able to see, write, save, to these same Floppy's or CD's.
It's also telling me to load the CD when its already in the RW devices in my computer.
I just reloaded everything on to a new hard drive in April, I used the DVD/CD-RW and everything was fine.
My model is Satellite 2415 S205. I have reloaded Drivers. What else can I do? I refuse to believe the RW/DVD and the "A" went bad at the same time.It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.

As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?
