Ressurecting an old laptop

Hey guys,
my HP dv6000 laptop has been having major hardware issues lately (stay away from HP laptops) and is out of commission for the time being so I dug out my old gateway. I'm trying to make it as functional as possible with its limited resources. I'm running a pentium 4 @ 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram, a 32 mb ati video card, and a 20 gig harddrive. Right now I'm running standalone openbox.
My questions:
I'm curious about awesome wm, is there any advantage in terms of the resources it uses?
Is openbox my best bet for a wm?
Also, what might be a good file manager that's light on resources? right now I'm using thunar.
And finally, I'm trying to figure out what utility I can use to extract rar files.
Any other suggestions to make this setup functional would be great.

I too have a majorly faulty HP. A Compaq Presario v5000, if anyone cares to know...
I wont be buying from HP again.
Anyway, I think you've pretty got yourself set up with a usable desktop. If you want to change to another wm, it's up to your taste.
I suggest Pcmanfm as a lightweight filemanager, but Thunar is really good too. PCmanfm might be a little quicker, plus it has tabs and can put icons and wallpaper on the desktop, so it's a very good option for a wm-only system, IMO.

I have just purchased a new laptop as my old one was completely broken and would not do a thing not even turn on. Problem i have now is i have downloaded i tunes again on to my new laptop but an unsure how to get the music off my phone onto my new laptop? My old laptop broke so i've now bought a new one. When i've installed itunes it now says there is new software but if i want to download it will delete all of my apps, photos etc... what do i do?

if you didn't do a backup of the old laptop so you can get the itune lib back the way it were

but you can never lose the apps they are tied to the appleID and can always be redownloaded from both the iphone under purchases and in itunes on the computer

I have a new powerbook and want to give my girlfriend my old G4 power book, she has a new iphone 5s, and wants to create a new itunes/apple id. When i try to de authorize the G4 and sign in with her new apple ID it says bad password, how can i release the G4 from my cluster of authorized apples and make her the owner so she can download music and more importantly sync her music with her phone, she only has 3 songs on her iphone, and loaded all her CD's into the g4 but cant sync, im no dummy and this shouldnt be hard, but its driving me crazy!!!!!!

My old laptop crashed, and took my iTunes account with it. I got a new laptop, and want to sync my iTouch to my new iTunes account. It gives me an error message stating that I can't sync to multiple iTunes accounts, but I can't access my old one! Help!

How can I get my new iTunes account to allow me to Sync my iTouch? The only option it gives me is to "transfer purchases" from my iTouch to iTunes, but that is only about 25% of my iTunes library-most of it is CDs I have uploaded. How can I Sync without losing all my music from my iTouch???
Also, I have lectures and photos, etc. on my iTouch that I don't want to lose.
I've tried a few of the iPod copy programs-the free ones and the ones you have to pay for, but I can't find one that will work for ALL my content on an iTouch.
Right now, I can't get anything from my iTouch to iTunes, and I can't update my iTouch with my new iTunes purchases, so I'm stuck! Help!

Also-I tried to use my backup hard drive, but I wasn't able to drag/transfer/send/move any of my muic files onto my iTouch when the iTouch was connected to my computer. I can't figure out why it won't let me do that.

my iphone 4 was originally linked to my itunes library via my old laptop which just got stolen. I have brought a new laptop and authorised it - so now i can see my itunes library on it, but when i plug in my i phone it says that it is registered to a different library and that if i sync i will loose everything. How do i solve this problem? is it beacuse i'm using a new laptop, or something else?
The big thing for me is that i can not loose my contacts, diary etc information. When the error message comes up it says erasing and syncing will clear the phone - does that mean EVERYTHING, or just music and apps? if just music and apps i can live with that because i don't have any music on there yet and the apps i guess i could buy again if they aren't backed up.
My iphone is running on v 4, and the macair is brand new - so maybe there is a software problem? i have tried to update the version on my phone but agian i get a message saying that i will loose data if i proceed so i want to make sure everything is backed up and synced before i go ahead with that.

Check your mac's Serial Number.
Some people have problems with missing serial numbers on their Macs and that's the message you get when this happens.
Click on the Apple at the top left of the screen, open "About this Mac" and click on "More Info". You should see a list with information about your Macbook Air. Check that on the Serial Number field you have your Mac's Serial. If you have "SystemSerial#" written instead then that's your problem.
You can re-enter your serial number if you have a USB CD drive, it's not very straightforward but I can walk you through it if you need it.

HT1296 Is there any way I can transfer the music from my ipod touch to my computer without having to pay for it? Itunes worked fine with my ipod on my old laptop. I am not willing to risk losing all of the music on my ipod to update to the newest iOS.

I really don't want to lose all of the music I have on my ipod touch. It worked fine with my ipod and my old laptop but I got a new laptop and now it doesn't want to sync anything except purchases I made on the ipod and everything that was in the cloud. The rest of the music on my ipod is from old CDs and I am away from home. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me some advice. I also don't really want to pay for a download that moves the music into itunes so if anything is free and safe that would be great or if there is a way to do it manually. Again thanks to anyone who has advice to share.

You would have to purchase a 3rd party program ( not supported by Apple).
The ipod is not a storage/backup device.
Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.

How do I transfer music from my ipod to my PC without being able to access the old laptop which the ipod was previously synced to? My old laptop broke, and I want to sync my music and add everything to my new laptop, but if I try to sync my ipod with my new computer it says it is going to delete all my music. I own CS6 on my old laptop and can't find the discs. How can I recover it and install it on my new laptop?

I have the serial number for CS4, and I have the box for CS5, but can't find CS6. However CS6 is installed on my old laptop. I am moving to a newer laptop, and discovered the absence of the discs. I probably stored in my office and can't find them now. In fact, the office is a disaster since my husband died and I can't find anything! Well, maybe the printer, but that's about it. Any suggestions? I do not want to start paying $50 a month for a subscription or even $20. I want CS6 on here. Is there a download online for owners? I think I can get the serial number on CS6 that is installed on my old laptop.
Used to be you could chat online with a customer service rep and get this all straightened out. Now I can only find help in forums. If anyone knows how to get through to a customer service rep, please let me know.

On my ipod touch 3rd gen, i was forced to do a factory reset. will i get old apps back if i dig up my old laptop and connect?

I was using my ipod not only for iTunes purchases, but also Amazon music. The current Amazon music app isn't compatible and it doesn't offer the old one. Not only that, but all my old apps are gone too. :-( before I go through along process, will I get all the old versions if I dig out my old laptop? Connecting to iTunes on my new computer gave me nothing.

If you restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod ithe iPod will be like it was when new. For an 8 GB iPod you will have about 6.4 GB for your use.

iPod touches or any iDevices from Apple sync only to one computer. If you sync to a different computer, all your music will be replace with the music from the new computer's iTunes. If the music were purchased from iTunes, you can re-download them again otherwise the music on iPod touch will be deleted. Do you have iTunes backup?

How can I move my entire iTunes library from old laptop to new one?

I got a new iPad for Xmas to replace an old laptop not realising I would still have to have a laptop or PC for my main iTunes library. I have got round ths by creating my own area on my partner's laptop & have installed my iTunes library on there. However, it has only installed my purchased music & not my wider collection such as all my CD's that I burned then got rid of to go digital. I have my complete library on my iPad & iPhone but need it on my laptop too in case I lose or break a device & need to install my iTunes library to a new device.
I have followed the support detailing how to move your iTunes to a new computer but am not getting very far. I don't have an iPod to use as an external hard drive. I read that you can drag your iTunes library to a CD or DVD but my library is 16GB & I don't have any disc big enough!
Does anyone have an idea of a simple way I can do this? Is it not possible to do it directly from my iPad or iPhone seeing as my complete library is on both of these devices?

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content

Hi, I've bought a new (PC) laptop and installed itunes. It worked perfectly with my phone on my old laptop but nothing is working on my new one...

1) I can't drag songs onto my phone 4 - I keep getting a red circle icon with a line going through. It won't let me add songs. What's this about?
2) It won't let me transfer purchases from my phone to itunes - It tries and after awhile it says there's some sync failure.
3) When I go into the phone music library itunes won't let me sort the songs by artist, album etc. I can't click on the tabs at the top to change anything.
4) There are a number of songs that appear greyed out on my phone which indicates missing songs. They skip when I try to play them. I don't know why or when this happened (probably when I tried to sync with my new laptop), but what is the cause and how can I get these songs back?
5) Also, the cloud column always says "waiting" - is this supposed to be the case?
I am using Windows 7 64-bit and have authorised my comp to use itunes. I also deactivated authorisation on the old laptop cos I wasn't sure if that was stopping it, but I don't know what else to do.

Hi, I see I haven't had any responses but these problems haven't been fixed.
I still haven't been able to transfer purchases from my phone to my comp so consequently have stopped purchasing on my phone.
I bought a couple of albums recently via itunes on my comp, and tried to tranfer them to my phone via a playlist, but the sync often crashes. One album transferred except for one song, and the other hasn't at all. What happens is that when I autofill from a playlist it often hangs for ages on the first song and then I have to quit the application altogether as nothing happens for ages. Basically, the whole Itunes software freezes.
After this I find it hasn't transferred any songs, but they do appear greyed out on my phone, which means it has transferred some basic data such as the titles, but not the song itself. When I try to repeat the process to complete the transfer Itunes tells me that it can't transfer because the songs are already on the phone, but they are not!! I can't click or remove on the greyed out items, so now I have a couple of almost full albums on my computer that I can't tranfer or install on my phone, and a whole bunch of greyed out songs on my phone that I can't play or remove!
The rest of the problems as above still stand. I downloaded the latest itunes OS updates but nothing's changed. I haven't done the very latest iphone update yet though because it says you need to make sure your stuff is backed up, and I don't want to lose the purchases I made on the phone that I can't transfer to my comp. I'm planning on uninstalling itunes completely and reinstalling but I have little faith that this will fix the issue.
Can someone please help at all?? I'm so sick of this!

My old laptop crashed. I bought a new one, but when I loaded itunes and plugged in my ipad 2, it only added the songs that were purchased in the itunes store. I upgraded my os to 5.0 and it deleted all of my songs, a lot of my apps, and all of my pictures except for the ones on the camera roll. I have these pictures and songs on my itouch 2nd generation but I can't get it to synch with the new computer. All of the solutions I have seen online don't work. I can't upgrade to the newest operating system because it is only 2nd generation. I tried turning on Home sharing and saving to the cloud, but I can't get it to work on the itouch. Please help!

I don't have a backup copy of my old computer. I bought an external hard drive and it said it backed up, but when I plugged it into my new computer, it was empty. My old computer is not accessible. Thankyou for your help, sorry to be a pain, but the two laptops aren't networked, I only turned the old one on to get the itunes onto the new laptop and iphone, and have spent all afternoon and night trying to do this with no luck. I'd really appreciated it if you have any other ideas
