Restart and shut down problems on MBA
Hi Community,
I have the OS X Lion 10.7.3 Software on my MBA, since I bought it last year in the summer, so maybe my case is a warranty issue!
I normally put my MBA to sleep, but sometimes try to shut it down, it worked just fine before, but since a couple of days it doesn't restart and
won't shut down, the gray wheel modus until I press the shut down button for couple of seconds. I don't won't to shut it down only this way,
there is obviously a problem. I already installed the new update from the software and it didn't even ask to restart, normally it has to restart after an update, right?
I have tried to shut it down from the guest account and it worked just fine.
So it would be great, if someone else has some tips to this issue.
Thx,
Yulya
If you boot into Lion recovery mode (boot holding the command and R keys down), bring up Disk Utility and do a repair disk. Also repair permissions while you're there. If that completes without error, reboot using the Safe Boot by holding the shift key down when booting. That may take longer than normal. If that completes, try a regular boot.
If issue still remains, download the 10.7.3 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484 . Before installing it, bring up Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and repair permissions. Install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
If those steps don't fix it, the next step may be to reload 10.7, however, you may want to take it to the Apple store to see if they have any other guidance. It doesn't sound like a hardware problem, though.

This process work for me Please comment below if it was helpful toyouAs I said, a weak or dead PRAM battery can reportedly cause odd startup issues. If it has never been changed in six years, that's a really long-lasting battery, even if the iMac was kept on continuously.
They are pretty cheap from the right source, so you may want to try changing it.

I'm not able to close and restart Firefox at all, since the computer becomes completely unresponsive, save for mouse input. Task Manager is also of no use.
Ok, to copy the Drive from one to another, get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Or SuperDuper...

Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.
DW will not tell you about Bad Sectors, it's just the very best at Repair Directory damage & such.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process. -
Here's the problem: several months ago my iMac went to sleep and when I hit the space bar to wake it up, the pinwheel started spinning and there was a series of ten clicks, a pause, and then ten clicks again, over and over. The clicks were coming from the hard drive area in the computer. I did a hard re-boot and it was fine for awhile but then the problem came back when the hard drive went to sleep.
Then, when I would try to start it up after shutting it down, a similar thing would happen: no desktop, one click, then an infinite series of ten clicks from the hard drive with a pause in between each series.
I tried unplugging everything, letting it click away for as long as it felt like it. Eventually the clicking stopped, but the folder with the question mark came up. I restarted and restarted over and over and eventually the computer came back up with no problems.
I called Apple and they felt it was a software issue. They talked me through some diagnostics, resetting the PRAM, Disk First Aid and then finally wiping the hard drive and starting over. I reinstalled my applications and it worked fine for awhile; I was able to shut down and start up, as well as put the drive to sleep without any problems.
Then, it happened again on shut down and subsequent start up. Once again, I restarted over and over and eventually it came back up. Since then I have turned all the Energy Saver options to "Never" and haven't shut down since. Except once when the power went out. I had the same problems starting up.
I still think that it's a software thing because otherwise I haven't had one problem with this beauty of a machine.
Anybody got any ideas?Zambini, welcome to Discussions. I would tend to think you have a hardware problem. The clicking is probably the hard drive and the reason it has trouble starting is if the hard drive isn't functioning properly then the Imac isn't finding the OS on the hard drive and can't start up properly. I would definitely get ahold of Apple and let them know what is going on STILL and that reloading has not fix it. It may also be the motherboard but would definitely think hardware. Good luck and let us know how it goes with Apple. Bob :~))

Computer Restarts and Shuts down
I just got a new computer its an new imac. My problem is while working in Firefox, Quark Express and Suitcase when scrolling with the scroll ball the computer shuts down by itself at least thats when it seems to happen. I transfered some files from my old computer using the mirgration software on the machine it seemed to be working fine but i may have copied something over that i wasn't suppose to and i can't figure what it was. I just transfered the applications and nothing else. Plus if i run a disk utlity it says in valid volume count or something like that its like 2 files more then the computer thinks it has. Ive repaired it but its not fixing it. Before i do a complete reinstall does anyone else have this problem or had this problem? and do u have any suggestions?

Startup and shut down problems with Nano
I am wondering if there are any preferences or settings I can change to prevent the following annoying problems:
1. The Nano starts up on its own when jostled around in a bag with other items. Sometimes it will actually start playing and shuffling songs via the built-in speaker and drain the battery.
2. The Nano is sometimes difficult to shut down: while holding the shut-off button at the bottom of the wheel, a menu drops down asking if I want to add the current song to "on-the-go." I am then forced to scroll up the menu to choose "cancel" and try to shut down again. Sometimes this irritating occurrence repeats itself over and over. Whatever "on-the-go" is, I would rather disable it than have this keep happening. The Hold button is on the top of the iPod Nano not on the scroll wheel = iPod Nano 5th Gen. User Manual.

Hello again octopus78,
Based on the information you have given me, I would suggest following this document on when the Screen is Blank after Starting the Computer.
If the issue persists I suggest creating a backup by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8). The next step will be to recover your Operating System by Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).
If the issue continues after this point, please call our technical support at 1-800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

Freezing and Shut Down Problems Exporting in Final Cut Pro X
I've finished a film of over an hour in legnth. I've got an iMac and each time I try to export, either my computer freezes up or it shuts down. I'd like to send my film off to festivals. Any advice? Would compressor help with this? Have I missed a step in the export process?

The trial is a full-flavored actual version of FCPX - which doesn't support your OS.
How did you manage to download it, anyhow?! -
Retina display 2012 restarts and shuts down the screen - Shows panic report
I installed Yosemite 6 days ago. The first three days was running Ok. But two days ago I was working and the computer just crashed and when it was re-starting suddenly power offs the display. I wasn't able to tun it on again for an hour. I mean it powers on, because the keyboard illumintates but the screen does not powers on, it does not shows image.
After leaving the computer to "col down" I'm able to see the image again and I found this report:

Z3 Compact random restart and shut down
@Yaoguai Repair your phone with PC Companion
http://support.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/Hi there, I have searched through the forum a bit, but haven't found the exact same problem I have yet, so here it is. I got my phone close to a month ago, and it was working fine, battery life great, everything running smoothly till about week ago.I started to noticed sometimes in the notification has the mobile data is disabled sign, which when I'm at home connecting to wifi, this would indicate the phone has reastarted on it's own. Then I did see it happening with my own eyes as the phone sat right next to me. Then I started to notice that it would sometimes just completely turn off on it's own. So here's what I have done so far:1. Already performed PC companion fix 2 times, and made sure all my software is up to date; didn't fix the problem.2. Installed the bare minimum of apps that I would normally use; problem still occurs.3. Curretly testing it out in safe mode to see if it'll do the same thing (which loads no downloaded apps) So my questions are:1. if safe mode running no additional apps solves the problem, what am i suppose to do? download no apps? then I might as well go back to a old brick phone or something if I can't run my apps for communicaton purposes (That's prretty much all i have anyways, various email clients, and chatting apps... not really games)2. is this a phone problem i should just send the phone back to xperia care to take care of? I bought two phones recently in Taiwan, one for myself which is this Z3 Compact, and the other is for my boyfriend, a T2 Ultra. I already had to send the T2 Ultra in because the SD mount was faulty and wouldn't read SD card properly, and now my own phone too? I must say I am extremely disappointed Sony! I have been a Sony user for many years, and does this indicate a reduced level in quality control? Please don't disappoint us. Thanks.

Any suggestions?
Run through the list of general fixes here, perhaps one or more of them will get things to work again.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If not you can likely retrieve your files this way, if they are not encrypted,
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
then use Step #20 in the above link to reinstall everything and return those files
Think about having alternate backup and restore options to avoid this type of issue.
When TM fails to restore properly, it's a royal mess to fix as you can see.

Safari crashes and shuts down every time I visit Grays Online. Site usually flicks off in under a minute. Anyone else with this problem?
The website may need more memory than you have available if you are running iOS 5.1.1 on the original iPad. Try some basic troubleshooting steps. Maybe quitting all apps might be the best thing to try.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit ALL apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. -
Mac Pro restart/shutting down problem
So, now I have my Mac Pro. I really love this machine. I working in OS X & I gaming in WinXP SP2 (boot camp 1.1.1. & http://www.macproxppics.com/ solve the SATA problem) - its beautiful.
But I have a strange problem. In WinXP after I choose Restart (or Shutting Down) sometimes I see the black screen (looks like the machine is getting restart) & hear HDD-working sound (trrr-trrr-trrr... etc.) And nothing happend! If I wait 1-3 minutes the HDD is sounded & nothing happend. If I restart Mac Pro manually (turn power switch) machine restarting & working. In OS X I never see this problem, but in WinXP this happents more than one times per day.
I check HDD in WinXP. The result is - HDD is clean.
OS X disk utility check - all okey.
What can I do?CORRECTION! I opened my Mac Pro & see - this is no HDD-problem. HDD works okey on startup.
This is DVD-R drive! Sometimes DVD-R drive front panel indicator ligth green (if Mac Pro case is closed - this indicator closed to...) & drive sounded 'trr-trrr-...' After 3 minutes ligts off & Mac Pro booting whithout problem.(DVD-R drive have no disk inside)
I need a service repair?
