Restart computer after EVERY crash????

I heard or read somewhere that its BEST to restart the pc after a crash or the problem may just lurk there....this helps most of the time but again is Very frustrating......Here's another question it was said to look at nVidia - I have the GeForce 7500LE - are they any known problems with this one?  It's been 2 months of work on and off to get a 25 minute, 100 photo slide show put together with transitions, music and titles.....on a bad day (lots of crashes) I leave the project alone for a day or so (to rest)  but I had envisioned loading the pictures with automatic cross dissolve and tweaking a few transitions and adding titles and music and expecting it to take but a day or so....would a dedicated pc striped to the bones and even without internet acess do the trick....I'm grabbing at straws.  Remember I'm a novice about pcs so just finding the specs can take me awhile......I thought the PrElements was for someone like me.

Taxi Mom,
Unfortunately, you've posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. Maybe Steve will move it out to the main forum, where many more people will see your post, and help you.
In the meantime, it sounds like you've possibly got a few issues going on.
For crashes, take a look at this ARTICLE. It might help you gather "clues" as to what is happening, and maybe even point out the problem.
This ARTICLE will give you some tips on getting a computer ready for an editing session.
Last, let's talk about your still images. What size are they? For a DVD Project, the rec. is for no larger than 1000x750 pixels. This ARTICLE will give you tips on resizing, if necessary.
Hope that some of this helps,
Hunt

  • When restarting firefox after a crash, how do I stop it from re-opening all web pages that were open at the time of the crash?

When firefox crashes, or if it hangs and I have to kill it, then when I go to restart it, it tries to re-open all pages that were open at the time it crashed or was killed. This is incredibly annoying, especially if one of the visited pages caused the crash or hang. It is also really annoying if some of the web pages happened to require passwords to log in, from multiple sites. In my case this occurs as I am frequently logged into multiple online educational web sites like ucsc-extension.edu and berkleemusic.com. In the login case you get multiple login prompt pop-ups with no way to correlate which pop-up goes with which web page. If there are a lot of them then it's a hopeless mess. This behavior is something that I never ever want and it infuriates me that not only is it the default behavior, it is something that there seems to be no way to turn off, at least via the configuration menus. Am I wrong? Is there a way to turn this off? If not can somebody either make it configurable or get rid if this fantastically idiotic behavior?
I suspect there's a command line option for this but on my Mac (or most systems these days) it's sort of "unnatural" to be starting programs like browsers by means other than a provided program start-up icon, which gives you no choice about the command line options.
Besides, as a default behavior the current behavior is something I cannot conceive of ever wanting. I would rather have a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == firefox crashed

    You can try this.
In the address bar type about:config you will be warned that this is dangerous.
    Search for browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash
Double click on true to toggle it to false.
    Exit the page.
Firefox will now NOT try to reload websites after a crash.

  • Forced second restart required after every s/w upgrade

    As the subject title says...
on one of my two G4 Macs, after every/any software update that REQUIRES a restart, the restart never completes on it's own. I can actually hear the HD NOT having any disk activity. It just hangs when the screen goes from grey to blue with the spinning sprocket thingy.
If I hold the power button in until it forces a restart (iBook) it then reboots fine and the second attempt. Why?Why?Why?
This started maybe 2 years ago and never went away. It's just annoying more than anything else.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

  • "need to restart computer" after switching laptop hard drives.  HELP!

i have a 13" macbook pro. I just got an older generation 15" macbook pro (refurbished from apple) because i need the pci port.
    i switched the memory
    i switched the hard drives
15" macbook pro (the one i just got) works like a charm
13" macbook pro keeps prompting me to restart the computer after the apple picture comes up. In other words, snow leopard won't even boot up
    Any suggestions???

If you switched drives then your new computer now has an older version or an older build of OS X that cannot boot the new computer because it does not have the required hardware support extensions.
You have two options: 1. Switch the drives back; 2. Reinstall OS X on the new computer using the discs that came with it. This will not erase your files but it will install a fresh copy of OS X that works with your new computer. A reinstall will take about one hour plus or minus.

  • Often have to restart computer after signing off firefox

I often get a message"firefox is not responding, have to restart computer to continue". I get this message quite often when I close a session and try to logon to firefox later on. It says "firefox is running but not responding, close previous application or restart computer to continue."

Doesn't it work to close and restart Firefox?
Are there any Firefox processes left in the Task Manager when you close Firefox?

  • Can't restart iTunes after a crash

I've been having this problem off and on for several years now, and it's raised its ugly head again today. With varying frequency iTunes crashes on me. Not normally a huge problem, just restart. However, occasionally iTunes crashes but doesn't actually leave the dock. As long as it's in the dock I cannot relaunch itunes. In the past I've waited several hours in the vain hope that the icon to leave the dock, thus enabling me to relaunch. I have not had any success with this approach. The only solution I've found is to restart the entire computer, obviously less than ideal.
The truly irritating thing is that according to the Activity monitor and the terminal command $ top (which the Activity Monitor is based on IIRC), iTunes isn't running, but according to Option + Apple + Escape and the Dock it still is. However, any attempt to relaunch the app using either Option + Apple + Escape or the Dock does nothing. Apparently there is some subroutine that is running that does not quit along with the rest of the app and tells at least part of the system that itunes is still running and won't let me launch a second instance of it.
Does anyone know what this subroutine is so that i can find it and kill it from the terminal or activity monitor? Is there anything I can do other than restart my entire system when this happens (complete BS if this is the case)?
I've run into this problem on my 400MHZ iMac DV SE, 400MHZ PowerMac G3, 800MHZ PowerBook G4 DVI, 867MHZ PowerMac G4, and my first gen MacBookPro, so I know it's not bad ram, or a hardware problem.

Since no one else is having this problem, or at least no one has had any suggestions I would like to know if anyone knows what the process usbmuxd is supposed to be for. I've run into the crash that won't quit and can't be restarted issue again. Out of frustration I've taken to killing processes from the terminal and seeing if that will help. It did for one of my hangs after the initial crash, but not the second time. One of the processes I've killed is this usbmuxd which immediately restarts itself and places the following message in the console:
"usbmuxd-167 built for iTunesEightTwo on May 11 2009 at 13:36:48, running 32 bit"
is it possible that the reason I can't get iTunes out of the dock and cannot relaunch it is because some message between iTunes and this usbmuxd didn't get passed correctly and it continues to relaunch itself waiting for itunes to respond?

  • CONSTANT "RESTART COMPUTER REQUIRED" SYSTEM CRASH!

NEED HELP! I have never used this discussion - needing to get some help. Ever since I upgraded my PowerMac G4 from latest version of Tiger to OS X Leopard I've been having trouble. My most serious problem just krept up with a tinted window I have never before seen indicating a system crash with a window that says "Restart Required." I noticed this first about two weeks ago but it began to occur once every one or two days. This morning it is not even letting me do any computing. I booted the computer from the Install disk and ran Repair/Verify but it indicated that all was good. I tried resetting the PRAM to no effect. I don't have Dr. Symantec installed anymore and am at a loss on what to do. I did the recent upgrade to 10.5.3 thinking that might help but it did not. All my other Apple software applications updates are good. Can anyone help me with this?

nah, that doesn't sound too swell. i can't recall if when you upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, if it would create a Previous Systems folder and save your Tiger OS and old iLife apps. seems like it would since you have a folder named such - though that could've come from your Tiger days - if you've ever archive/installed. anyway, an upgrade or archive/install will never save user account files in the Previous Systems folders. so, if you can't turn those files up anywhere, they're likely long gone. i've never seen file loss during an install, so it's weird that you would've lost stuff - unless something went wonky during the installation, or if your hard drive has some intermittent issues. some folks are confused about how iPhoto and iTunes stores and/or copies files - perhaps they're just hiding out somewhere on your system.

  • HT1660 How can I get my library from my i pod back to the computer after a crash?

I lost my library after a computer crash.  I'd like to transfer everything back from my I Pod if possible.  I reinstalled I tunes and the screen looks totally different  There is no 'file' to work from and the disc does not get picked up from the drive.

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer?  not good.
You can transfer itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.
You can purchase programs to get the other music.
The ipod is not a storage/backup device.

  • How do I get a reinstall on my computer after a crash for photoshop elements?

Alright so this is what happened, the last time my computer crashed my dad had to restart it because the virus was so bad, he even reinstalled windows and all for me, except when I went to find my Photoshop elements that was included with my deal on my mini hp tord boontjie, I couldnt find it. I must have thrown it out when I moved without realizing it, and I was wondering if its possible to get a reinstall of this product because im not willing to pay that much for photoshop elements. If anyone could help me on this issue, i would be very glad. Thanks in advance.

It didnt come on the computer, it was in a seperate box inside the same box, so you had to upload it on there with a memory card, im asking about the photoshop elements, if its possible to recover that, because the only reason I bought the laptop was for the photoshop included in the deal..

  • Can't restart computer after Mavericks upgrade...

    Hello.
Just upgraded one of my machines to Mavericks (Mac mini, mid-2011). Installed without issue, and everything is running without issue, but, whenever I try and restart the computer, it logs out as usual, but then hangs on the grey screen, right before it'd normally reboot. The mouse is still active, but I can't do anything else. I've let it sit for over 30 minutes and eventually have to do a hard restart.
I've been wresting with this all morning—tried permissions and disk repairs, creating a new admin user and tried restarting under them, re-installing Mavericks (even the installer wouldn't restart—got hung on the restart, hard restart kicked into the isntaller though), tried removing all my peripherals...even tried removing deeply-integrated apps like Parallels and Little Snitch (which I didn't think would do anything since restarting under a newly created admin user failed), and no go.
Short of doing a clean-install, which I'd really rather not do, not sure what else to try.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Any suggestions on a fix?
    Thanks!
    Kristin.

    Kristin,
I'm having similar problem after upgrade on my imac. Hangs with white screen after logging out. Have to press/hold pwr button to shut off, then press to turn on.
I have a LaCie porsche ext hard drive attached by usb. Should I unplug this and try reinstalling mavericks? I didn't remove ext hd during the upgrade, was I supposed too?

  • Can't Restart Computer After Software Update Download.

I have a PowerBook G4 which I had upgraded back in December to Leopard. After downloading software updates a couple of days ago, I tried to restart my computer and all I got was the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I brought my computer into the local Apple Store and the tech tried to archive and install from an external drive and the computer said there wasn't enough memory to install Leopard though the tech said I had enough RAM installed but that the computer wasn't reading the memory available correctly and that I needed a new memory board at a cost of $350.
I had a similar thing happen in December 2007 after I downloaded software updates. I brought my computer into the Apple Store. It seemed there was a "kernal panic." Everytime the tech deleted something it kept coming back "to life" and taking up too much "space" though this was different than not having enough RAM (I'm not terrifically computer saavy). I left the computer there for them to look at and a few days later due to whatever they did it was working again.
When dealing with the current problem a few days ago the tech said it was purely coincidental that the computer stopped working immediately after I downloaded software updates on two different occasions, but I found that very difficult to believe. I put in the installation disc that came with the computer and was able to get through the first steps of installing Tiger without actually beginning to install it, and I saw that the hard drive only had 49mb free and the tech said I needed 51mb to install Leopard. I called an Apple Care tech on the phone and asked if I could reinstall Tiger so that I could at least access the internet and retrieve my emails until I could get the Leopard issue resolved. He said doing so would delete Leopard and all of the documents I had done on it.
I mentioned I used to have my computer set up so I could access both OS9 and OSX on my computer and asked if that was now possible with Tiger and Leopard. He said I would need to go into the Apple Store and have them hook up my computer via firewire to another computer and boot up in target mode so that I could possibly delete some of the files taking up the memory and have enough room to install Leopard, or failing that could at least partition the hard drive and install Tiger until I could get the Leopard issue resolved.
I tried the safe boot someone suggested in a previous thread on this topic, but the computer would not boot up. Does anyone have any other ideas to solve this problem without taking the computer into the Apple Store? And how can I prevent this from happening during software updates in the future? I did not have the option with this last software update to choose only one download at a time. Software Update just started downloading what seemed to be one large update.
Thanks in advance for any help or illumination anyone can provide.

  • I pulled the bookmarks html file off of my computer after it crashed, and am trying to get my old bookmarks into firefox. How does one do that?

When my computer crashed, we managed to recover a bunch of the files and information from it. One of the files we pulled was the bookmarks.html from the firefox folder. The computer was running on Vista when it crashed, and I now have it running 7 Professional. The file is recorded as a Chrome html file on the new computer, and when I click on it, it pulls up a basic html page within Chrome or firefox that has links to the firefox website (kind of like a webpage version of the bookmarks folder from the toolbar, but without any of the bookmark adding capabilities). I'd like to get my old bookmarks loaded into firefox. Help?

Firefox hasn't used the '''bookmarks.html''' file for storing bookmarks since the Firefox 2 versions, in 2008. Later versions use '''places.sqlite''' for bookmarks and history. What you have is the default file that Firefox uses on new installations and new Profiles, which has like 6 bookmarks.
If you still have access to that old hard drive, see this for help: <br />

  • Having trouble restarting computer after installing iTunes

So I just finished buying my iPod Classic not too long ago. I use a Windows Vista computer (Gateway) and have attempted to install iTunes several times. Whenever I do and go to restart my computer, it stays stuck on the start-up screen. It refuses to boot up Windows. The same happens when I shut it down and try to start it back up manually. Eventually it'll give me an error saying that Windows could not start, so I go ahead and choose to let it check for problems, then it essentially forces me to do a System Restore on my computer to the point before I installed iTunes, with no iTunes installed at all. Is there anyway to fix this? o.O

Is your iPod still plugged in during this time? If so, take it out and try again. Something similar happened to me and this ended up the culprit.

  • When restarting server after a crash, Messaging bridges are not starting

    Hi,
We have Messaging bridge configured with Exactly-Once QOS to read messages from IBM Websphere MQ to Weblogic distributed Queue. We are using Weblogic 10gR3.
    1. We killed the weblogic server which was reading message from source destination(IBM MQ). We did this to check whether any message is lost when a server crashes.
    2. Then we restarted the weblogic application server and checked the weblogic messaging bridge status.
