Restart Computer message

Ever since updating my MacBook to 10.4.10 I have been getting messages that I have to restart my computer. Apparently this is caused by a Kernel Panic. Here is what I have been able to determine so far:
- only occurs when running of the battery
- occurs somewhat frequently (more than once per hour)
- does not seem to be linked any particular application that is running at the time since it has accured while running a number of different apps. Yesterday I rebooted and then immediately ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions and the problem occured while it the only application running
- I have (while plugged in to AC) repaired disk permissions several times. No error was ever found.
- I have run the Periodic Daily Weekly Monthly tasks manually several times (my Macbook is asleep over night)
- I have run the Apple Hardware test for several hours and no problems were detected
- this problem started after immediately after installing 10.4.10
- it has never occured while plugged in to AC
- I always use a wireless LAN connection so I can't say if it occurs while plugged in to an ethernet cable
- I bought the MacBook in May 2007, so it's vitually new
Anyone have any suggestions on what I might try prior to reinstalling the OS X?
TIA
Armin
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Could be a hardware issue with the battery or a
battery connection since it always occurs while on
battery power. I would take it to a repair facility
and have it looked at. It's new, under warranty, take
advantage of the warranty.
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, living in the middle of nowhere (south-eastern British Columbia), the nearest Apple warranty service centre is a four hour drive away. Since the hardware test ran for several hours without finding any hardware problems I'm a bit hesitant to ship the MacBook to them, only to find out that nothing is wrong. Plus there is always the chance that it will end up getting damaged during shipping.
Since the hardware test comes up clean (again and again and again...) and the problem didn't start until right after I installed 10.4.10, I think there's a pretty good chance that it's software related so I'd like to explore solutions along that line before packing the Mac up and entrusting it to a courier service.
Also, I dual boot the Mac using Bootcamp and it has never ever crashed while running Windows Vista Business (needed for some work related software). As a matter of fact, it runs Vista better than any of my PC laptops... go figure. Perhaps Apple should give lessons in writing Vista device drivers!
Anyway, any suggestions on chasing down the software gremlins that are giving me grief would be appreciated. Or maybe I'll just have to wait until Apple releases a fix, since I don't seem to be the only one having this problem since the release of the 10.4.10 update.

  • Install disk causes "Restart computer" message when MP starts up

I'm not having any major problems with the computer. It's just been a little slower lately and a couple programs (Logic Express specifically) have been taking an extremely long time to open files. I figured a clean slate would help things run better but I can't even get that far.
I was wanting to "Erase and Install" using the Install disk. I put the disk in while the computer is running, a prompt comes up to restart the computer and start installation process. But after a minute or so on the apple start up screen I get a message that says "You must restart the computer". I keep getting the same message every time I start the computer with the install disk in wether I hold "C" or not.
I ran the hardware test just fine holding "D" on startup using the same disk but the test showed no problems. Went through the disk utility and verified disk and permissions and nothing came up. Started the computer holding the power butting down till it beeped and that didn't help. I'm at a total loss on why I can't run a simple install disk. Any ideas?

You are experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc.#106227.
FJ has some good KP tips.
Or, do everything, in order, in Dr.Smokes Resolving Kernel Panics and don't leave out any steps (most used KP site in the forums).
Quote from Dr.Smoke "My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein"

  • Frequent system freezing. Restart computer message, followed by beeps during startup

For the past few weeks I've been having repeated crashes on my MBpro 4.1, with OSX 10.6.8, fully updated. The system randomly freezes and I have to force a restart. Sometimes the system does not restart but gives a series of beeps remaing on black screen.  If I let it rest a while it then starts properly.
I did a complete reformat and fresh install with only the basic software I need but the problem has not been resolved.
I have already tried changing the memory modules, without solving the problem.
Any kind advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Beeps during startup usually indicate bad or failing memory or slots which will lead to panics.
Do you continue to have problems if you boot into Safe Mode?

  • "You Need To Restart Your Computer" Message every time I try to boot up

I recently installed Mac OS X 10.4 onto my Mac Mini after a licence became available in my home. All was working fine and I updated to 10.4.11 updated safari, flash all that kinda stuff I was missing with 10.3. There was a mega (20.4GB) log file called ARDAgent.crash.log that was clogging up my 80GB Hard Drive leaving it with very little free. This file was there in 10.3.9 but I didn't delete it there and then. After installing 10.4 (I thought maybe it would sort it out - it didn't) it was still there so I tried deleting it. "In use". So I restarted with it moved and as another help topic said I deleted it using terminal. Computer seemed to be running normally and after updating Sockwave Player and a few other things I decided it was time for a restart.
I restarted and 75% the way thru the blue OS X launch sequence I got the "You Must Restart Your Computer" message. Oh Dear thought me. Ah well, do as I'm told. Next time I didn't get as far. It got to just before it loaded OS X bar and then did the same. So, try launch from the 10.4 DVD - worth a try. Did so and for some bizar reason gave me a blue screen. Ok. So what next? I tried the 10.3 restore CDs that came with the Mini and it looked great. It got to the stage of clicking continue to do tests / install OS X and it crashed giving me the restart the computer.
I've reset the PRAM and PMU.
It now crashes with the Grey Screen and Apple logo with the loading sign at the bottom after about 15 seconds after bootup.
I've got a backup but for some crazy reason it's not bootable :'(. I've got other backups but they're of 10.5 and 10.6 so I doubt the mini will even boot into them so I can have a look at the HD to diagnose any further.
Any help would be really appreciated as taking it into a Mac Store is near impossible.

Yes, you are getting kernel panics. A leading cause is memory, however, there are other causes. If you haven't read this, it may help: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • When Waking From Sleep: 'You Need to Restart your Computer' Message Appears

About once a month, when my computer goes to sleep and I wake it up again I get the dreaded 'You need to restart your computer message'. Like I said, it only happens about once a month and not every time I wake it up.
I did upgrade my memory to 8GB a few months ago but I don't suspect that this is the cause since I only get this message once in a while.

What would help more is the panic.log entry. See, Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Superficially, I'd say uninstall your Shockwave and/or Flash plug-ins.

Would anybody have a clue as to what is causing this problem?
    Notes:
No non-native software has been installed
    Have not renamed system folders
    Thanks guys!

  • I downloaded firefox 6, and restarted computer, but the message under the search window says I don't have the latest firefox. I tried twice. thank you

I downloaded Firefox 6 and restarted computer, but the message under the search window says I don't have the latest Firefox. I tried twice. Thank you.

I have a similar problem; but I think the cause of the "already running" message is that my computer crashed.
I rebooted before I learned to look for the parent lock file, but even when I knew to look for it, I found my original profile folder to be empty.
So I created another profile folder, and FF works, but I cannot access my old profile folder. When I open the location where it should be, nothing's there. But if I go to profile manager, I see my original profile is still there (and it has a location, it's where it should be - and where it's invisible, but even if I type in this location, nothing comes up).
I tried making all folders visible (I run Windows 7), but this did not make my old profile visible.
I want to find it because of the bookmarks I bookmarked recently.

  • Message "you need to restart computer" when shutdown Mac OS X or WIN7

On my book Pro with Mac OS X 0.7.2 i creted a new Bootcamp Partition and i installed WIN7 Ultimate. When installation was completed i installed Bootcamp driver. Now i'm able to login with OS x or with Win7 and both system seems to work properly.
When i shutdown Win7 or OSX a gray window is displayed with this message "YOU NEED TO RESTART COMPUTER. HOLD DOWN YHE POWER BUTTON UNTIL IT TURNS OFF, THEN PRESS THE POWER BUTTON AGAIN."; this message is displayed in 5 different langueges; under the message is displayed a black  icon with the force shutdown / restart button of the mac book pro.
I follow the required procedure: if i choose to restart with OS X an alert essage is dispayed : "COMPUTER WAS RESTARTED DUE TO A PROBLEM"; dialog suggest to send notification to Apple; this message is displayed in my original language: Italian.
Some one can help me please?
    Thx
    carlo Casoli

That is hardware and driver issue and to resolve you are probably going to have to find what was installed and uninstall, and disconnect the device.
AppleHFS.sys can have trouble mounting drives.
To write to Windows, NTFS driver (Paragon-Software)
To stop using AppleHFS, again, replace with a Windows HFS driver
    - if that is the cause
Apple does not support mounting RAID while in Windows.
Reinstall won't help. And you can't avoid forever.
Also boot from Windows 7 DVD and repair - go back to prior restore point.

  • Restart-Computer remotely with Local Admin

    Hello;
I manage my company's server and AD infrastructure, containing hundreds of Windows 2012 R2 servers.  I also patch all of my servers monthly.  The biggest challenge in patching servers, is the fact that they need to be restarted every month, in
order for the patches to finish installing.
We have a certain group of servers, that need to have their restarts specifically scheduled.  The services offered by these servers are managed by a specific group of IT Pros.  However, this group of IT Pros do not have Local Administrative permissions
on these servers (nor do they need it to do there jobs).
I would like to enable this group to remotely restart these servers every month using the 'Restart-Computer' powershell command, without granting them Local Admin (that way, I won't need to get up at 3am every month to do this myself).  I've tried adding
them to the following "User Rights Assignment": "Force shutdown from a remote system" and "Shut down the system".
But, they still get an "Access Denied" error message.  What am I missing?  Is this even possible?  I've searched for hours now, but with no luck.

Thank you for the reply, but I had already tried those suggestions.  Here's what I've tried so far:
First, as I mentioned before, I've added the admins to the following "User Rights Assignment": "Force shutdown from a remote system" and "Shut down the system".  Then I temporarily added the admins to the "Allow log
on locally" user rights assignment so that I may log on to the server as the admins and prove that the admins can indeed restart the local server.  From the server console, the admin was able to launch a powershell session and run the "Restart-Computer"
command, and the server restarted perfectly.
So that part worked just fine.  But I would like to get the admins to remotely restart the servers, without granting them the "Allow log on locally".  Another thing I tried, was to create a new remote PSSession, and then run the Restart-Computer
command from there.  At first, the New-PSSession gave me an access denied error message.  That's when I ran the Get-PSSessionConfiguration command, and I noticed that the "Builtin\Remote Management Users" group was allowed access.
So I added the Admins to that group on one of the servers.  Now the New-PSSession command worked.  But the Restart-Computer still gives me an Access Denied error message.
Here are the commands that I am using.
First, running the Restart-Computer from the admin's workstation:
    Restart-Computer -ComputerName SERVER01
Second, running the Restart-Computer command from with a remote PSSession.
    New-PSSession -ComputerName SERVER01
    Enter-PSSession 2
    Restart-Computer
Either way, I get an access denied message.

  • RESTART COMPUTER POP-UP WINDOW ISSUE

Please help me help me why I keep getting the same restart computer pop-up window lately with no error message at all even though the software update is completely up-to-date.

Can you describe this "pop-up window" in more detail? Is it the +kernel panic+ message that takes over the screen, has multiple languages, and does not let you do anything else? Or is a a regular dialog widow that you can move around, with normal buttons, that still allows control of the Mac? If the latter, what does the window say, exactly?

  • Trying to install CS 5.5 on a newer computer (Windows 7) and I am told to "please restart computer." Restarting doesn't resolve anything

I am trying to install CS 5.5 on a newer computer and every time I go through setup the serial number comes back good (green check mark, etc.) but then when I proceed with install, I am told to "please restart computer." No error number just "please restart." After restarting 5 or 6 times I realized there must be a deeper issue. I first made a basic mistake (forgot to deactivate the serial#) so I went back on to the original device and, interestingly, when I re-installed InD CS5.5 on the old computer, there was no incident. It then proceeded to function normally and opened just fine, I deactivated the serial#, and went back to the new computer. After installing and trying again, I got the same message "please restart computer."
This was a license that allowed for multiple installs and I have put this program on a Win7 (pro) laptop before using the same serial number and had no issue. Now I am on an Asus Desktop running Win7 (home) and and am having this please restart problem. Could it be an OS issue? Any ideas of what to try?
Thank you all, I hope someone can help.
    Tommy

I think you need to clean this machine before trying again, so run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3), then run MSconfig and turn off all non-essential startup programs before you try to install again.
Also, be sure javascript is enabled. From the Start menu choose Run, then in the command field type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press Enter. You should get a confirmation.

  • My callout toolbar stopped working abruptly.  Restarted computer.  Still doesn't work - how do I get the tool back?

My callout toolbar stopped working abruptly.  Restarted computer.  Still doesn't work - how do I get the tool back?

The tool is called a “callout” note.  It places a text box with a leader.  It’s been working just fine until suddenly it stopped working and I get an error message saying “desired operation cannot be performed on this object”.  It doesn’t matter where I try to place the callout.  It simply stopped working.  I have tried restarting Acrobat.  I have restarted my computer.  I have used multiple files to ensure the issue isn’t with a corrupted file.  Nothing works.  The tool simply stopped working.
