Restart dialog box on grey screen

Every morning I start up my eMac 1GHz G4 and run OnyX maintenance items.
About half way through this ap or the next one I open I get a grey film on top of what I have opened on my desktop and a large dialog box asking me in 5 languages to restart my computer by holding down the power button for a few seconds.
eMac 1GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You're describing a kernel panic. Those can be caused by a number of things: bad RAM, hardware faults in attached peripherals, incompatible drivers, or bad/incorrect software.
There's no reason to run OnyX (or any similar utility program) on a daily basis. If your Mac is normally shut down overnight, running the cron maintenance routines manually bimonthly or so is actually sufficient, weekly is you want to be throrough (the weekly cron task is the lenghiest one). Are you using the Tiger 10.4 version of OnyX? Are you running only the maintenance scripts via OnyX (OnxX is a great program that does a lot of things, like a Swiss Army knife, but like any knife it can cut you if used incorrectly). More directly, does the Mac run normally if you don't run OnyX after starting? An older/incompatible version of a disk utility program can cause problems (see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes). You may want to manually force background maintenance weekly or bimonthly instead.
General kernel panic advive: to narrow down the cause of the kernel panic, first disconnect all peripherals other than the Apple keyboard and mouse. I'd recommend then booting from your Tiger OS X Install disc to run Repair Disk on the hard drive, as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck. Take note of any errors reported and if repairs are made, repeat Repair Disk (one error can mask others) until you either get a "no repairs needed" message or it becomes obvious that Repair Disk is stuck in a loop.
Then Start Up in Safe Mode. Be aware that it takes longer than usual to start in Safe Mode as the Mac performs faceless checks on the drive. If the computer fails to start in Safe Mode, that would suggest an issue with the Mac's hardware; use the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with your eMac to check the computer (the AHT disc may be a separate CD or a partition on the original OS X Install/Restore DVD that you can boot to using Startup Manager.
Assuming the Mac starts OK after booting in Safe Mode, use Disk Utility to run Repair Permissions. The, leaving the peripherals disconnected, try a normal startup. After than, add your peripherals back one at a time, checking for problems after each.

  • How to I center a dialog box in the screen?

    Simple question, and I hope a simple answer.
    I need to center various sized dialog boxes in the screen.
    I've tried getcenterpoint(), but I don't know EXACTLY how to use it.

    look at the ToolKit class. there's a method which returns the size of the screen. with the size, you can calculate and use the setLocation() method to center your dialog box.
    you can also use the setLocationRelativeTo() method of the Window class. (JDialog inherits the method from Window)

    Disconnect all devices from your computer if you have not already done so.  Restart again.  If the problem has been resolved, you had a peripheral conflict.  You will then have to reconnect the devices one at time, restart,  to locate the culprit.
    Login Items is another culprit.  Check your login items.

  • There is a dialog box on my screen that I've never seen before. I can't get it to disappear. Any ideas?

    My Macbook has a dialog box on the screen that indicates everything I do. Right now it says "Standard toolbar". When I try to get rid of it nothing happens. I've never seen this before and don't know ho to get rid of it.

    This seems to be more common than I thought. Premanent solution is to trade the cat in on a dog.

  • Import dialog box displaying off screen

    When I'm in the office, I work in a dual-monitor environment.
    However, when working at home, I have only my laptop monitor.
    If I need to import something - html file, template file,
    etc. - the dialog box is displaying off screen.
    I've shut down and restarted, but still the same result. When
    I try to resize the RH window, it resizes off screen.
    My display properties indicate only one monitor.
    How to fix?
    Thanks!
    Cindy

    Hi Cindy
    Sounds like you need some multiple monitor managing software.
    Try these:
    MultiMon (Free)
    click here
    UltraMon (Paid)
    click here
    Other than that, you can try flying blind and navigating
    using the keyboard or maybe bump your resolution to the highest
    possible setting and perhaps that will bring the dialog either
    partially or totally into view.

  • Alternatives to "dialog box" for on screen notification

    I would like to activate a small notice on screen while my script is working. This will prevent others from doing work on the machine while its doing its magic in the background. The "dialog box" stops background tasks from happening. I found iNotify, but the product is no more. Any alternatives to a dialog box? Thanks - J

    I think CB wants to lock the screen so that others can't use the machine while the script is running (though I can't quite imagine why - macs are designed to multi-task). I don't know of a way to do that in a normal user account from applescript. if that's what you're after, you'll probably either want to write a cocoa shell for your applescript that takes over and locks down the screen, or else you'll want to restart into a special user account that has no GUI, run your script, then reboot into the user's account.

  • Dialog boxes appear off screen

    Hi!
    I'm using Illustrator CC on a MacBook Pro. I use an external monitor as a second screen and usually move the application frame to the external monitor and work there. I started having the follwing problem: when I try to save or open a file, the dialogue box appears slightly off screen, so that I can't for instance type in a new file name, because I can't get to that part of the dialogue box.
    I have tried switching between different screen modes, but it doesn't help. Also I can't manually move the dialog box - which also seems strange.
    My external monitor is a NEC MultiSync EA273WM.
    Any idea what could be the problem or how to solve it? It's slowly driving me mad...
    Thanks in advance!

    At the moment it looks like the problem is called 10.10.2
    You can read through the posts of last week on this forum, but I'm afraid you won't find a solution.

  • Macbook pro freezes & after a hard restart i get a grey screen &  horiz bar

    i have a intel 2.3ghz macbook pro that is freezing up... and the only way to unfreeze it is to do a hard restart.... then when it is starting i get a grey screen with a while apple logo and a horizontal progress bar near the bottom of the screen? the computer seems to run fine after it starts until it freezes again... usually it freezes a couple of times a day... i have run disk utility and repaired the permissions and also done a disc check.. the disc check said that the hard drive was ok.... i have backed it up via time machine and superduper back up... my laptop is running osx 10.6.7 and it says that the software is up to date... the hard drive is a 500 gig hitachi and was replaced a couple of months ago... i have 105 gigs of free space... any ideas on what is going on? and what i can do to fix it... i am heading out of the country for a couple of weeks on monday...

    I reloaded OS X 10.6 with the install disk (CD) and then upgraded back to 10.6.6 using the downloadable 10.6.6 Update Combo file from the Apple site. Below was the exact sequence:
    1. Download 10.6.6 Update Combo file connected via a direct ethernet connection. I wasn't able to accomplish the download via wireless because my computer crashed before I could get the entire file. I saved this on an external hard drive, also, just in case. I also backed up vital files.
    2. Reinstall 10.6 via install disk. Put disk in drive and restart holding down "C", per the instruction blurb on the CD. This took about 45 min. Note that the "progress" time didn't seem to match what was going on.
    3. After the 10.6 install was complete, I opened and ran the 10.6.6 Update Combo
    After (3), everything has been fine. Total time was about 1 hr. All of my files/programs seem to have made it through untouched.
    I've been tempted to try the 10.6.7 Update, but am still gunshy from the experience. I have a feeling that if one were to use the 10.6.7 Update Combo in (3), things would work out fine. I'd love to know if this is the case, but for right now, I'm pretty happy that my computer is back to normal. Hope this helps.
    BTW I think you can probably restore via Time Machine, but the above is what I did.

  • Installion restart comes up as grey screen

    I had just put my leopard cd in and it said to restart it so i clicked the restart button. Everything was fine until it got to a grey screen with the rainbow swirl...i waited hours and nothing changed. I called apple and they said that i should wait (great help)..... I tried shutting down the computer for 30 minutes and then trying again but no luck. Please help!

    apple said wait? so how long should we wait? i'd think 30 minutes is more than any user can take!
    try holding down your alt key when starting up your mac. this will bring up the boot chooser. if the leopard is in your dvd drive already it should come up on the chooser. double click on leopard or choose the dvd and press return. wait for about 15 minutes. if it still won't install ask for your money back. i don't know whether that helps, but imho it's better than apple's advice.
    there are also reports on leopard not booting up after installation. if that happens take a look at this article: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=200710261517596

  • Dialog box display won't update after screen blank or being moved

    I have a modeless dialog box used for status display by a plugin I wrote for Acrobat. Everything works fine until the screen blanks or the user moves the dialog box on the screen, at which point no further updates to the dialog box are displayed. My plugin consumes 100% of CPU for long periods of time so the program can appear dead without this display being updated, but nothing I have tried seems to make any difference. The dialog box is generated with ADM and things I have tried include calling "Update" on the dialog box at regular intervals, the windows "Sleep" function to yield the CPU periodically, and a host of similar tactics.
    I'm guessing all the code will get run together once I click submit, but here is how I create the diaglog box (it was working fine without the "WinAppRegisterModelessDialog", but I saw a reference to it elsewhere and tried it to see if it would help, not sure if it actually serves any useful purpose):
    statWin = sADMDialog->Create(inPluginRef, DIALOG_ID, IDB_DIALOG1, kADMModalDialogStyle, NULL, NULL, 0);
    WinAppRegisterModelessDialog((HWND)sADMDialog->GetWindowRef(statWin));
    infoBox = sADMDialog->CreateItem(statWin, 5, kADMTextStaticType, &coords, NULL, NULL, 0);
    // Status header
    coords.top = coords.bottom + 10;
    coords.bottom = coords.top + 12;
    statHeader = sADMDialog->CreateItem(statWin, kADMUniqueItemID, kADMTextStaticType, &coords, NULL, NULL, 0);
    // Status line
    coords.top = coords.bottom + 10;
    coords.bottom = coords.top + 12;
    statLine = sADMDialog->CreateItem(statWin, kADMUniqueItemID, kADMTextStaticType, &coords, NULL, NULL, 0);
    // Progress bar
    coords.top = coords.bottom + 10;
    coords.bottom = coords.top + 15;
    progress = sADMDialog->CreateItem(statWin, kADMUniqueItemID, kADMProgressBarType, &coords, NULL, NULL, 0);
    sADMItem->SetMinIntValue(progress, 0);
    sADMItem->SetMaxIntValue(progress, totalPages);
    // Set window size, and other attributes
    sADMDialog->Size(statWin, coords.right + BORDER, coords.bottom + BORDER);
    sADMDialog->SetText(statWin, PROD_NAME " - Progress");
    // Set header for status line
    sADMItem->SetText(statHeader, " Page # % Complete Estimated Time remaining");
    // Initialize progress bar
    sADMItem->Update(progress);
    Updates are currently performed with the following code segment. The last two lines are my attempts to get the display to update once the screen blanks:
    // show it
    sADMItem->SetText(statLine, textBuf);
    // Update progress bar
    sADMItem->SetIntValue(progress, pagesCompleted);
    // Force display update/refresh
    sADMDialog->Update(statWin);
    // Yield for display update (in case of screen blank or user changes)
    Sleep((DWORD)100);
    Everything works fine until the window is moved or screen blanking occurs, after that nothing seems to work, all updates to the box cease to be displayed. Any suggestions?

    OK guys here's an update. First I went to BIOS and updated the initial display setting to "LCD panel only" from "Auto". At first I thought it helped, because when I worked at the laptop without the external screen attached, the internal LCD panel resumed normally from off (previously this didn't work).
    But today while I was in the office with my external 19" LCD screen attached, and both of them went off after being idle for 10 minutes, the internal LCD panel didn't resume again. So I've tried the Fn + F5 key combination to switch between modes, and I switched from dualview back to single. The internal LCD panel blinked for a second and then turned off immediately, and from that moment on, I was without picture on both of them. SO I ended up hibernating and resuming again. :( An important note - as soon as the computer began hibernating, the LCD went on and I could see the whole progress of hibernation before it turned off.
    Also another note - when I'm in dualview, I always have keep the internal LCD panel as the primary screen. So unfortunately, when it doesn't resume, I don't have access to the taskbar etc to try more things...
    Any more thoughts?
    Thanks again!

  • Multiple screens & Excel dialog box placement

    I'm using multiple screens with my 13" Retina Macbook Pro, and what is really annoying is that Excel places it's dialog boxes in a strange location where I cannot action them or move them.
    Does anyone have an idea on how to tell Excel to ignore the other displays and just show me the dialog boxes on the screen/desktop that has the application on? Going to fullscreen or moving the windows to any other displays didnt make any difference; dialog box remains the same

    Understandably this is causing these users stress and inconvenience.  It is very unproductive and a nuisance to say the least.  The only other variable here is that all these users have multiple monitors, usually 2-4.  But for some, this happens
    in their main monitor and/or the monitor that Excel is opened in and which has the focus.  Even more strange is that this does not occur to everyone, just a handful of users so far who have reported the issue.  We have also noted it happens with
