Restart Failure

Hello HP Support Forum, After a few years of good operation, the following problem has occurred: The first thing I noticed was a Internet "drop" from my modem/router setup. I attempted to re-acquire my Internet connection by turning off the modem, router, and computer, waiting a few minutes, and retrying to reconnect. I did this about 4 times without success. My 5th try was different. When I attempted to restart my computer using the "power button", my keyboard turned on (normal), my monitor turned on (normal), and the "hard drive activity" light came on (normal). However, after about 5 seconds, the keyboard, monitor, and computer all went dark. All repeat attempts to restart my system have resulted in this exact same sequence. It is as if the "power button" was being held down for 5 seconds resulting in a well known forced shutdown. I checked and the "Power button" is not stuck in the down position, but springs up in the normal manner. Near the end of this 5 second start sequence, the monitor shows the HP Logo briefly, just before the undesired shutdown of keyboard, monitor, and the HP Desktop. I don't believe the problem is related to the operation of the modem/router. Thanks for any suggestions,
rwier

Hello MechPilot, I was able to solve my problem before I saw your reply to my post. My "solution" started when I found the "sticker" on the side of my desktop computer listing a HP Support web address. I attempted to access this site on another computer. I got an error message containing one, or more, web site addresses to try. I selected a likely candidate, and I reached an active HP Support site. I'm sorry that I didn't take notes, so the rest of this story is from memory. I reached a point where my computer's Serial #, Product #, and Model #, were asked for. I was very happy, because those #s were found on another "sticker", located on the same side of my desktop as the "support" sticker. After entering this info, I was directed to a list of suggestions. This was not the HP Support "Forum" Site. I copied my computer info and problem description to the Support Forum later.  The "SOLUTION" to my problem started with repeated presses of the F2 Key during the desktop's startup sequence. Amazingly, this resulted in the activation of my mouse, keyboard, and monitor, while the desktop showed no indication of activity. The monitor displayed instructions for performing various tests. I followed the instructions, and the recommended tests took quite a while, possibly as long as an hour. All tests indicated "passed". When the tests were completed, I attempted to restart my computer. I was amazed that a normal start occurred, and my internet access was automatically acquired as normal. During this entire incident, I saw no indication of the nature of the original problem. I am posting this info to the Forum, in case it might help someone else in the future. Thank you very much for your personal attention to my problem. Feel free to mark this thread as "SOLVED", if you believe that appropriate. Thanks,
Robin Wier

  • Mac Pro Restart Failure....

    Hi all,
Tonight I have experienced a strange restart problem that was not present earlier today. If I try to restart my mac pro, it shuts down ok but I just get a repetitive clicking sound whilst the machine is trying to restart. This to me would suggest a bad disk however the computer will shut down and boot normally. It's just when trying to do a restart. I have run a verify disk / repair permissions etc on all drives and disk utility reports all to be ok. I have also run Leopard cache cleaner. Any ideas why this may have started happening and is there anything I can do to check the disks a bit more in depth? Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. No ups, machine is set not too sleep other than the screen which is set to switch off after an hour of non use. The circuit is dedicated to my mac pro including the monitor. It really sounds like one of the hard disks is seeking, getting to a certain point then trying again, over and over. It has been fine. I have however recently added an additional 8GB of ram. Wether or not this would affect anything I don't know. I have checked the lights on the risers, seems fine and everything shows up as ok in the memory system profiler. Other than the thought of a faulty disk I'm baffled! When running the machine, which works smoothly, I do hear a lot of relay type clicks coming from the tower. Not sure what this is exactly but presume it as being normal. Thanks.

  • Safari 5.1 is a nightmare- crashes, constant reloads and restart failures

I get constant freezes (spinning beachball) and after i force a quit, safari won't stop reloading previous sessions! How can i make it stop?
What use is tabbed browsing if it can't remember a tab without reloading all of them at inappropriate times.

safari won't stop reloading previous sessions! How can i make it stop?
Try this >  How To Disable Lion's 'Resume' Feature - MacRumors.com
If Safari actually crashes, post a crash report so we can try and help.
How to locate a crash log:
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

  • Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 - unable to boot up after installing

Hi everyone, I really hope anyone can help me with this!!
Ok, I've always used Imageready CS2 to open avi files to edit then save as animation GIF without affecting quality (which part of PS CS2 that I did pay for) on my old laptop with Windows XP in the past.
Since then I've got a upgrade to PS CS5 (paid for) which I've installed successfully onto my new laptop with Windows 7 but till now, I'm dismayed to find that I'm unable to open avi files in PS CS5 just because I have 64 bit, not 32 bit even though I couldn't find the 32 bit program anywhere (apparently I found the 32 bit by searching in start up button but it still opens as 64 bit?).
So I thought I'd try installing PS CS2 into Windows 7 using my CD and found that the activation part doesn't work anymore which leads me to finding that I could download a copy of PS CS2 without the activation bit (yes I did the uninstall before installing PS CS2 without activation) everything was great BUT...untill I tried booting up my laptop next time, it wouldn't start up properly at all, it would only manage it to that Boot Screen Animation then blackness with the cursor in the middle or rarely to the log on screen that doesn't work but thats it so I had to do a system restore to get it back in working order minus the PS CS2
I thought it was the fault of other things I've downloaded at around same time like xvid decompressor codecs (so I could use VeeDub64) so I downloaded the codeces from different source and restarted to see if it boots up ok (it did) so I tried installing PS CS2 again but same thing happened on restart - failure to boot up and I had to do a few system restores (as some of the points didn't work ) before I barely got it back in working order yet again....
I see that some people have PS CS2 that works perfectly on Windows 7 with 64 bit because they changed the file path when installing the program? Or was I supposed to have the 32 bit program somewhere although maybe I don't have it since my PS CS5 is not extended? Would either of those work? To be honest, I'm quite reluctant to try as I may end up killing my laptop this time around and it's only around 2 years old!!
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

I'm happy to report that I've managed the resolve this issue of mine
After a little discussion with customer support through online chat today, I was still advised to try the uninstall and install to see what happens.
So I used the CC cleaner tool first, restarted then started by installing CS2 then CS5 using my serial numbers and made sure that I selected 32 and 64 bit programs to be installed
Anxiously, I restarted my laptop to see if it would reboot okay and thankfully it did *relief!*
Now I can open avi files using 32 bit of Photoshop CS5 without any problems (thank goodness!!)
I think I probably didn't install the 32 bit program when I first bought the installation CD, since I thought I didn't need it but never knew it was still required for editing avi files!!
Surprisingly, I still got to keep both versions of CS2 and CS5 this time around, as CS2 was simply replaced by CS5 when I first installed it two years ago....hmm.
    So thank you again gener7!

  • Iplanet ds5

I have configured the iplanet in Solaris 9 yesterday.
    1. The directory server was configured with cognos user and cognos group with 1388 port.
    2. The admin server port number is 1391 and it was given with root user access.
    3. Created another instance with port: 1389.
    4. Every thing was fine yesterday.
    5. Today when I tried to login, it was no allowing.
    6. When I tried to restart the iplanet server, both the directory instances are starting.
    7. When I tried to start the admin server, it is responding as: iplanet-Webserver-Enterprise/6.0SP2 B01/06/2003 22:24
    8. When I give stop-admin command, it responds as server not running.
AM I missing some thing? Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

I'll assume that you can login admin console before via web server console (startconsole to DS admin server). Today, you can't because of admin (web server) restarting failure.
Check web server errors log and give us what you can see. It should be under /opt/SUNWwbsvr/https-admserv/logs (assume you install at default directory) Jerry

  • Self Healing integration into third party software

I was wondering if there will be a programmers guide and possibly software libraries that will enable programmers to implement Self Healing and DTrace capabilities in the software we write. Wouldnt it be cool to extend these capabilities into third party and open source software like Oracle, Sybase, GNOME, (etc)

While it is definitely possible to introduce a
dependent service to do exactly the same thing, I
find that somewhat a hack. What I have in mind is
more along the lines of possible reactions in event
of a service failure. A service restart failure
script is certainly more appropriate than defining a
dependent service. We might disagree on the hackishness/appropriateness of each: it depends on what the script's intended purpose is. A service failure script that sends you a message is fine; a service failure script that directly activates a replacement daemon or begins a long-duration outbound data transfer requiring reliable execution isn't. Both are possible from a script.
What difference does it make to smf(5) if I run the
same script in as a dependent service shutdown vs
running it as a service down alert?I think that the difference is we're likely to offer fewer guarantees and impose more constraints on the service down alert, if one of the restarters is responsible for executing it. Our goal is to offer scripting, but such scripts will have constraints on reliability and impact on system load, and require some description of maximum duration and "report-first" or "report-last" if multiple failures occur.
The contrast with an SNMP trap is: smf(5) issues the trap and then your management software can control the aspects of alerts, etc. None of the restarters is responsible for handling the execution of alert-tied action.
We'll be working through these actions, plus monitors, over the coming months--your advice (and other comments I've received) is going right into my notes.
    Cheers.

All of a sudden my login password won't be accepted can any one help but the weird part is after a few min the computer just turns its self on

This happened to me, too. I couldn't log in to ANY accounts on the machine. Restarted, failure again, restarted again.
    Solution:  Wait.
After restarting I let the machine sit for a minute. Then it worked!
I ran Onyx and repaired permissions. Big mistake, apparently. Now  I have to type my admin password everytime I want to move or save. All my Office docs open as Read-Only.

  • FM to start a WF

    Hi WFers,
Can you tell me when is best to use:
SWW_WI_START or SWW_WI_START_SIMPLE or SAP_WAPI_START_WORKFLOW? (this last one is for web/Portals isn't it)
    Thanx
    N.

    Hi Nuno,
    Use SAP_WAPI_START_WORKFLOW where possible.
SAP_WAPI* function modules are for customer use, the others are internal. (WAPI = Workflow API)
Use SWW_WI_START/SIMPLE if you have a specific reason why SAP_WAPI won't work.
Of course you should avoid using either and use events instead SAP_WAPI_CREATE_EVENT... that way it will use load balancing, you can restart failures, maintain start conditions in production and so on.
    Cheers

  • Cannot start protocol server agents

I cannot start several Ifs protocol servers: NbServerAgent, SmtpServerAgent, FtpServerAgent, WcpServerAgent and ImapServerAgent. They are "starting..." for a few minutes and then stop.

It keeps trying as long as the max number of restart failures permits.
With the same load conditions of the system, the number of protocols that can be started varies, though vmstat says that there is enough free memory (350 Mb) when I try it.
I tried to increase the initial and maximum jvm heap size with -ms and -mx, but it didn4t seem to have any effect. Is this correct?

  • Is this normal behaviour?

I close the lid of my macbook pro, it goes to sleep pretty much straight away (the indicator starts breathing), I put it in my bag and head off.
When I take it out of my bag a few hours later, the power is off, and it wont turn on - I guess it woke up in my bag and ran itself out of battery (I know this should NOT happen but is quite common, this isn't the behavior I'm querying about).
So I connect the AC adapter to my mbp, the little light on the adapter tip goes orange (charging). When i switch on my mbp the screen goes that light blue/grey whatever it is... but just freezes, it doesnt even do the very first chime.
I switch it off again, and let it charge for about half an hour, then switcheit on, and the same thing happens! Wont get past the initial light screen BEFORE the chime.
I let it charge over night, and now I can switch it on.
Is this normal? I.e. when the battery is fully drained, can you not run the MBP off the AC?

i have to agree about the odd behavior regarding the mbp waking while closed. it seems like i notice this too. one thing i thought of is the power settings- if they are set to wake or whatever at a certain time.
i don't know about your issue on restarting (failure of it). in my case when i was dead from no power, it seems to start with the power plugged in. BUT i do have issues similar but differant than yours.in my case if the mbp doesn't start at tht point i have to do a HARD restart- and just hold the power button down. this may not be related to the charge/power. but more like the sleep state locked up the system. my screen stays black and will either show the spinning wheel, or noththing. so similar but a different scenario than yours.
one big question is WHY if they are asleep are they waking?
related point: if it can wake while closed, why can't we purposely keep the mbp running while closed? LOL
seriously though, i know people say to preotect the HD while carrying the laptop etc. BUT ther are so many times when i want to close the mbp while running!! like playing itunes to a stereo- i don't want o keep the mbp open, and i just want to set it on the table or something. BUT I want to keep playing music. or perhaps close the lid, while doing a 20minute virus scan, or close the lid while other stuff. but i don't want to leave the lid open while doing any o fthese things.
seems odd, if the mbp can wake on it's own while closed, why can't we keep it awake while closed?

  • A UPS model that works with Mac Native software to do a graceful shutdown and automatic restart during a power failure.

I've tried 3 UPS's (2 APC and one TripLite) that state they are OSX compatible, however, they do not fully respond to the native osx setting in (system Preferences/ Energy Saver/ UPS/Start up automatically after a power failure). This is what happens:
During a power outage, the OS does a graceful shutdown, but does not reboot when power is restored.
Apparently, the UPS is not notified to turn off during the shut down process. The power (on-Off-On) cycle is required by the mac to restart.
Trip lite tech support says they have software that works with Windows and linux to do this, but not mac.
I've tried two older APC UPS's, One Smart UPS1500 and a Back-UPS 1500 with the same result on two different servers and one iMac.
At this point I'm looking for a make and model of a UPS that does work. If anyone can verify a make and model that actually does this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Its a simple test, just pull the plug on your UPS, wait for the system to shut down, and then plug the UPS back in. The system should reboot.

Many of the CyberPower UPS units are compatible. Checkout the home solutions on this page: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems.html

  • Datasocket connection failure requires restart of VI

I'm using LabView RT 8.5 together with a cFP-2110. I have shared variables hosted on the cFP, as the cFP application works by itself without the need of a host PC application. However, a host PC application can be connected and read/write shared variables to work as a GUI. The shared variables are accessed with Datasocket VIs, as the same application is to be used on different cFPs with different IP addresses.
The Datasocket connections is opened once and then the variables are accessed in a while loop. Before accessing the variables, RT Ping Controllers.vi checks if the cFP is still accessible. If not (or if the Datasocket Read operation fails), the Datasocket connection is closed. Now here comes the problem. When I want to re-establish the connection with Datasocket Open, I only get Error 66 (Connection closed by the peer). The only way I have found to "reset" this behaviour, is to close/stop the host VI and start it again. Is there an easier way to solve this? I assume the reason lies in something not being reset in the connection between the PC and the cFP. But what, and how can it be reset? Note that I have closed the connection with Datasocket Close in case of a failure.
I do not need answers about how I can avoid the connection failures in the first place. They can e.g. be caused by the cFP being temporarily too busy or something. The issue is when a failure HAS occurred, I want to be able to re-establish the connection without restarting the VI. How?

Isn't there anyone with similar experiences?
I would assume that someone would be interested in being able to restore a connection after a failure. Improving connections to minimize the risk of failures is not anyway a 100% solution. Sooner or later a failure will occur. And in that case I am not pleased with having to restart the application in order to get the system back on track.
I have already tried searching for previous posts regarding this, but the search results are very poor. Any ideas?

The test i run was to shutdown the private interface (eth1) on node 1 and i saw that
    1) all cluster services and cluster daemons on node 2 were killed and node 2 was evicted from the cluster by node 1
    2) all new connections were redirected to the survived node
    3) Oracle OHASD daemon was restarted on node 2 and tried to start the cluster services without success because private network between cluster nodes was down
Up to here everything worked as expected but once i turn on eth1 it took ~ 9 minutes for the CSSD to startup and bring all the components up & running.
    The node2 alert logs showes

    Hi,
there is an internal timer for the clusterware ressources regarding restarting the ressources.
In case of a node eviction or clusterstack reboot the clusterware tries to startup again.
If the issue still persists, CRS will wait for some time to start the stack again. This "restart" try is based on a timer, which is set to 600 seconds (note this is not the ORA_CHECK_TIMEOUT) but the STARTUP_TIMEOUT.
Since a missing interconnect does have some implications (not only on the network but on the whole stack) it is expected, that the cluster does not start so fast automatically (because it still has the first start running.
There is even another "issue" connected to this - Oracle will only try several times (FAILURE_COUNT/FAILURE_THRESHOLD) to restart ressources. If he cannot restart cssd/crsd for several times, OCW will not try to startup automatically, but expects the administrator to solve the error and then startup again.
But actually this does make sense:
We have to give some time for an error to be resolved, before we start automatically. It does not matter if the restart of the node is delayed by this, because
=> If the error is fixed automatically, it will normally be fixed after a cluster/node reboot and hence cluster will come up
=> If the error is not fixed automatically, but manually, it can be expected that the administrator tells clusterware the issue is resolved. He does that by simply starting the stack (crsctl start crs)
=> If the error is fixed automaticall, but fixing took a while (lets say 15 minutes), it does not really matter if clusterware needs 10 more minutes to come up.
So what you see is expected, and wanted.
It would cost way too much to monitor all ressources regarding cluster problems and trigger a startup....
    Sebastian

  • Driver power state failure (Windows 8.1 pro) when downloading a program and restart.

    Hey Guys,
I've been trying to fix this problem for a while now, without any solution. I have a HP ENVY 15-j035eo Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
which I install Windows 8.1 pro on. I start by getting all the drivers that are missing in Device Manager and updates.
Now I want to enable virtualization with Hyper -V client (All requirements are met for that). Then the computer crashes after restart with a driver power state failure. Exactly the same occurs when I install Visual Studio after restart. Here is some info from
the dump file from blue screen viewer that i get for the problem.

    Hi,
ntoskrnl.exe is known as a kernal image for windows operating system, but hard to find the actual acuse basically according to this error message you provided in the original post, maybe a 3 rd party program or a missing file, or corrupted driver.
Please uplaod the dump file after running Driver Verifier, you can find detailed instruction in the following link (provided  by Patrick Barker)
