Restart Hang

Hi forum,
My PC keeps hanging when I attempt to restart.  It just hangs in the restart screen until eventually a power down is the only option (via power button).
After reading a few bits on the web and due to frustration I opted for a fresh install.  I then updated all the drivers, software etc and everything seemed to be running ok but then the restart hang returned.  I looked on the web again and came across someone who was having a similar issue.
Following the advice he/she was given I disabled my network adapter and this has resolved the restart hang but obviously this is far from a permanent fix.  I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction as to what is actually happening with my system.
Specs below:
HP Pavillion 15 Notebook PC

Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter
Thank in advance

@DaHustla ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  Here is what I want you to try.
Go back and do the full system recovery again.
HP PCs - Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8)
Once you have completed this and are back to the out of box settings.  Instead of running updates from the HP assistant.  Go through to the Support site and download your full list of drivers for your system and save them to an external memory device.
HP Pavilion 15-p078sa Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) - Software and Drivers
Take a look at the file name and date of each driver from the HP support site.
Now boot your system into safe mode.
HP PCs - Windows 8 Safe Mode
While in safe mode go into the device manager and check each of the drivers starting with the chipset.
This is the most important one.
If the chipset driver is not the same as the one on the Support site you may want to make a change.
If your chipset driver is older on the notebook than on the Support site. Go through the process of removing all your drivers.  Again make sure you take note of all the other drivers that are installed.
File name and date.
In the process of removing your drivers while in safe mode you may be requested to uninstall  then reboot after each one.
Remember to boot into safe mode each time.
Once all drivers are removed then boot into Windows normally.
Now you will install the drivers starting with the chipset driver first before anything else.
Again you may be requested to do a reboot between installs.
Once you have installed all your drivers then proceed to install any software you wish to install.
After you have installed your software then go an run the Windows Updates.  Do not use the HP version at this point because you would have installed all updates that are concerned with drivers.
If the Windows Update shows any driver updates do not run them.  The drivers may point to generic drivers from microsoft and may not work with the proprietary hardware of your notebook.
Once you have completed this and you still have the same issue you will need to contact HP phone support for repair options.
Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Updates to 10.5 Cause Restart Hang

    Hi,
I have a mid-2006 Macbook, the warranty of which expired 7/15/09, a week before the trouble started. The internal drive died, so I removed it, booted from the Install DVD, and installed Leopard to my external drive, which worked fine. The problem is that when I try to install operating system updates the system hangs indefinitely during boot. I've tried
    10.5.7 update through software update
    10.5.7 standalone combo update
    10.5.6 standalone combo update
    10.5.1 standalone update
Each time the computer installs the update, restarts, and hangs indefinitely on boot at this point:
Typically I gave the system 25 minutes to boot each time, with at least two attempts on each install of the update. The external drive spins down and eats lunch about 5 minutes into boot. I once let it run all night and it never booted. The only fix has been to archive and reinstall the OS each time. You can imagine how time consuming it is to keep doing this.
Is this because I'm using an external boot drive??
Is this because I'm using an external monitor?? I've tried with two separate external displays. I've also tried using the Macbook screen but it's broken so I can't see what's going on during the boot sequence. Actually one of the external displays, a Gateway Monitor, doesn't display the boot sequence either, but I can see the boot sequence when I startup the laptop attached to an old APEX 12" television with a composite video cable and Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter. I mention this because some other folks have had a similar restart hang problem when using external displays: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9412370&#9412370
However, I have allowed the computer ample time to boot using it's own display. If I give it 25 minutes and plug the TV in, I get the same screen.
Before and after each update, I've also tried:
    repairing disk permissions
    repairing the file system
    reset PRAM
    reset SMC
    reset PMU
It is getting pesky to have to keep reinstalling the operating system after updates crash it.
    I haven't tried
    safe mode
    single user mode
    verbose mode
    startup in open firmware
running Apple Hardware Test--my next step
This was originally posted in the OS X Leopard forum: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9902392#9902392
Users there asked me to confirm I was starting up from the right disk, which isn't an issue. I've seen other users post their startup issues in the forum for their computer, rather than the Leopard forum, so I thought I'd try to post here.
    Thanks all,
    Anthony

So I tried again, this time with the 10.5.6 combo update, and I experienced the same restart hang and had to archive and install. But this time I tried a couple of more tricks:
    1) I tried to start up in safe mode (shift), which still resulted in hang on boot.
    2) I started up in single user mode (cmd+s) and ran a file system check with the command "fsck -y". I ran this twice in a row. The first result was "file system was modified" and the second result "the volume appears to be OK."
    3) I started up in verbose mode (cmd+v). The computer stalled on the following line:

  • Apps Don't Force Quit + Restarts Hang on $6500 new Mac Pro...  Unhappy

My new 8-core Mac Pro arrived 2 weeks ago. Since then I have had to Force it to Shut Down over 19 times.
Applications will often freeze and after force quitting them, they hang around in the Dock, still active, until I eventually restart the machine. Then restarting hangs on the spacey leopard background.
This is very frustrating. Especially after sinking my savings into this machine.
I have noticed that it may have something to do with the 2 G drives I have plugged into the machine. Often when one of the drives is hooked up, I get the spinning beach ball while trying to access files off of it. And when I must restart due to a frozen app in the dock, if I turn off the drives before I hit restart, the restarts will not hang.
Any thoughts on this dilemma? They would be much appreciated...

Hard to say with this little information, but I'd assume something was wrong with the machine out of the box. The two options are: hardware problem and software problem.
As a start, I would be inclined to erase the hard drive completely by restarting from the Mac OS X install disk, choosing Utilities -> Disk Utility and using that to erase. (Of course, you'll want to make sure you have a backup of all your documents first.) Then reinstall the system from scratch. Don't copy any settings over from the backup of your old system, since settings files could be corrupt.
Once you've got a squeaky clean system, if the problems persist, it could still be a problem with a specific app, but that starts to get harder to diagnose.
You could also try running Apple Hardware Test to diagnose some hardware problems:

It probably won't happen on a Safe Boot.
It probably isn't related to the problems with the Radeon X1900 and heat and dust build-up.
It could be your drives need directory maintenance with Disk Warrior. At shutdown it syncs and updates the backup volume information table, the journal, as well as writing out any changes not saved to disk and still in memory (and you have 16GB).
Cloning the system is always a good idea to do from time to time, followed by reformat and restore (after you run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the new clone).
Sometimes reapplying the combo update helps, other times an Archive & Install.
    Soft read and write errors.
You shouldn't need to reinstall. And as long as you keep backups and use SuperDuper you can have a working clone and either use the newly cloned drive or restore back to your boot drive.
Formatting a drive (Partition and set new volumes, not erase) insures that the first and last disk sectors are safe for writing (you can't test or map out bad blocks in the partition tables once created).
Corrupt cache files can also cause trouble which is why SuperDuper skips copying those and lets the system create fresh when first booted.
The worst error is if the journal is corrupt. Turn off journaling, repair the drive, then re-enable journaling, all while booted from your backup/emergency drive.
Having a working backup clone and an emergency boot drive are things I consider essential, using SuperDuper (personal favorite) along with Disk Warrior.
A bad USB cable or USB hub, or some external device can cause a system to hang or not shutdown or restart in timely fashion.

  • System wont boot after restart, hangs..

    Hello.
Recently i have got a strange problem.
When i restart or power on my computer without using the "main power switch on psu" my system hangs either just before cpu post or memory post.
If i turn it off  and on again using the switch on the psu it boots just fine..
I have searched alot around the internet and tried many things. Tried disconnenting devices, resetting cmos, disconnect everything from mobo and resetting cmos, tried new bios, tested my ram sticks in memtest and so on..
The funny thing is that this problem suddenly occured. My system worked fine until 2 weeks ago.
Also it have happened that it freezes in windows, screen freezes and computer stops responding. But usually in have run for 2-4 days before that happens.
It would be very much appreciated if someone could help me out with this
    My specs:
    Msi k8n neo2 platinum 54g
    Amd 64 3200 winchester
    4 * 512mb 3200 ocz ram
    Mist 430w psu
    4* 200gb maxtor s-ata
    card reader
    dvd-rw
    ati x800xl
    + alot of silent fans

    Ok, now i am confused.
I have discussed this problem with other people in a norwegian forum. They guess that it is the motherboard which is causing this problem.
I also think that. Because system have worked perfect until recently. As  i said earlier i have tried to disable some hardware to see how that worked and it was the same.
Now when system i booted it is 100% stable. The freezes that occured in windows was software related.
Also discovered that if i load windows in fail safe mode problem is gone! Have not been able to figure that one out.
    Almost getting depressed here.
    Comments? Tips?

  • Shut Down and/or Restart Hang... With a Twist

Leopard 10.5.2 intermittently hangs during Restart or Shutdown. I get an icon-less desktop and the little circle (not the beachball) that goes around and around.
I've Installed 10.5.1 and then did the combo 10.5.2 update on a Mac Pro (Tiger never installed).
The interesting thing: I do NOT have auto log in enabled, and sometimes when I shut down or restart from the log in screen (without ever even logging in at all) I'll get the hang, thereby forcing me to push the power button.
So, I am assuming that something is hanging on the OS and not letting it close. That something must be an app that loads BEFORE I log in. So, the only app I'm aware of that loads BEFORE I log in is Timbuktu (latest version 8.7). There may be others that load before I log in, but I don't know what they are IF there are any at all. All I know is that Timbuktu loads before I log in and therefore MAY be the source of the problem.
Anyone care to offer any thoughts? Thanks!

I also try to disconnect all my cable, but the problem persist.
I have a fishy: my Operative System is connect to a PCI Card for IDE HD and I can't put in stop all the operative systems (inside the PCI) because he can't stop the PCI Bus. In fact he don't came back from stop. I don't know if is it the problem also for this improper shutdown and restart.
The symptom is like James Reffner's symptom: I shutdown and all processes are close, apps, windows, Finder with desktop item, dock, menu bar and remain the desktop picture and this little circle in the center of the screen that goes around and around.
The funny thing is that If I shutdown the computer soon after the login, without open any application, he shutdown without problems.
Anyone know somethings that I can do?
Where I can find the problem?
    In the console?
    thanks... I hope!
Since I have the problem in two system: or my "Mac OS X install CD" is damage, or it is a hardware problem for my old G4 digital audio (incompatible), or is the PCI Card.

  • MBA Restart hangs at 50%.  Fails to Boot.

I have a MBA mid 2012.  Restart fails at around 50%.  By rebooting to recover mode I am able (sometimes) to restart via option in Recover mode.

I am only able to get back to Yosemite if I use the recovery partition and start up by selecting "Boot Disk"; choosing "Restart" does not work (or something like that).  I can then get back, and restart works normally; at least for a while, and then it fails again, and I need to go back Recovery startup mode and start over again.   I have checked the logs, and note the following entry when the reboot hangs:

  • Applications Not Quitting and Restart Hanging

I have recently converted to OSX with Mac Pro from PC but I have had trouble with various programs (Pages, Photoshop for example) hanging and when I try a force quit, the applications can not be restarted without trying to restart the operating system. I then try to restart by selecting "Restart" and all of the icons disappear, but the background stays on and the computer hangs in that state without rebooting. The only way to resolve the situation is to turn off the computer with the start button and then restart manually. This is continuing and is a nuisance, if nothing more. Any suggestions?

    HI,
You have a bevy of issues there.
How much free disk space is there? Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
As Sig suggests... check the hard disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • N96 restarts, hangs and crashes. Not seeing USB

Hi, I got an N96 two months ago, it worked great, no problems, until about a week ago.
One night I wasn't able to charge the phone because I wasn't home. The phone was dying, so I put it off. The next morning, I plug it in and it barely resopnded. At first it would show the white screen for a second before dying again. I left it plugged for a few hours assuming the battery was really flat. It never came on, or charged.
The next day I took it to a Nokia Store, assuming it was the battery. The customer care staff refused to replace it, saying that it was just flat, and worked in another phone. I found this odd, but took it back home, where it was suddenly working.
Problem is, since then, the phone randomly dies. If i place it on the table, chances are it would go off. This was immensely irritating, and I had to start handling it like an egg. After a few days, these subsided. This morning, however, I tried to plug the USB into my pc, and it wouldn't respond.
A couple of seconds later it died. Every attempt to put it back on afterwards resulted in the phone coming on, hanging for some seconds, then going off aagain. I plugged into the charger, and it came on... but then it would go off again and restart.
I eventually solved this by removing the sim card, hoping to back up my data and reset the phone. Problem is, now I can't still get the phone or the pc to realise the USB cable is connected.
What's going on. What do I do?

It sounds like the phone is damaged, and the nokia shop should repair the handset (you get a 6month warranty for the battery!).
If the usb is the only problem, you can attempt to back up the phone memory content to a memory card, this wont allow you to backup the mass memory (you wil either need to get bluetoth or usb to work for that).
IF you have a micro sd memory card, place it into the handset and open up the file manager application, slect backup and backup your phones content.
Any applications you have installed to the mass memory will have to be backed up another way, you can transfer the content to the memory card, but it really depends on the capacity of the memory card and how much data is in the mass memory.
Once you have done this, you should be safe to say that you can wipe the handset or give it to nokia to tinker with. I doubt wiping the handset wil solve the problem as it sounds quite severe - moan at nokia and im sure they wil fix it pronto!
To wipe your handset (But not your mass memory/memorycard/simcard) turn your phone off, then whilst you are turning it on hold down the GREEN (call key) AND Star (bottom left) key AND the number 3 all at the same time. Hold them down until you are greeted with the nokia tone, if it worked then you should be asked to set your location, otherwise do it again but quicker.
But as i said, give it to nokia as the handset sounds faulty, very faulty.
    Hope this helps,
    Tony

  • "Waiting to restart" hang at end of 7.3.2 update...don't worry!

I launched Airport Utility (5.3.2) and it told me new firmware was available. I did everything as instructed, but at the end it hung for a few minutes at the stage saying waiting for Airport to restart".
Then it said "Airport Utility has encountered a Time Capsule with a problem" and offered a option to find a solution. This took me to the Airport Utility set up start window. The light on the TC was solid green.
I didn't re-set up TC, just clicked on manual config and looked over the settings without changing anything, and closed Airport Utility.
Everything seems to be OK. Both my Macs are backing up OK with TM, and wireless connection fine.

If you're wondering, there were no external devices connected, although the updater was being run from a drive attached to the AirPort station. (The Macs were connected to the AirPort station via Ethernet.)
I think that was the reason. It's never a good idea to install software that requires a reboot from anything but the internal drive.
I think you misunderstood what I said. All the Macs were booted from their internal drives. It was only the updater file that was on the network disk.

  • Frozen Mouse + Restart Hang

I was going about my day as usual. I rebooted because my wireless connection was acting up, however, as soon as my Mac Pro logs in, the mouse is unresponsive. It works for about 5 seconds, but as soon as it is finished loading everything it stops working.
My guess was that there was something strange loading in the startup, but there was nothing in the account settings besides the iTunes helper.
I use a Mighty Mouse, so I figured I would try a second mouse to rule things out. I plugged in a Kensington optical mouse but required a reboot for it to turn on, so I did. However, when I attempt to reboot, it hangs at the spinning wheel with my desktop background.
After a long time of waiting, I held down the power button to force shut down, rebooted, and the mouse seemed to work ok, but after a couple of minutes, the Kensington mouse ALSO stopped responding. Now I have 2 unresponsive mice, and a computer that I can't properly shut down... what could cause this?
    These are my specs:
Mac Pro 2 x Quad Core 3.0 GHz
    OS X 10.5.2
    Gjunkie

    USB or Bluetooth (wireless?)
Sounds like USB, so we'll go from there. Are you using other USB devices? Try unplugging everything but the keyboard and mouse. If you're using a hub, make sure it has its own power supply.
(By the way, you can shut down from the keyboard with Ctrl-Eject...no need for the mouse and no reason to force it down.)
