Restart in special menu shuts down mac completely!

I've been using iMac OS 9.2.2 for some six years now. This last few days a problem has arisen when I select "restart" from the finder special menu. computer shuts down and doesn't restart. Nor will it start up again when I press the start button. To get it working again I have to switch off at the mains wait a few minutes and then start up again.
If I select "shut down" from the special menu, computer shuts down and starts again when I press the start button.
Its only when I select "restart" that the computer packs up completely until I switch off and then on again at mains.
Has anybody else had this problem? If so how did you fix it?
Thanks for your time and help.
Ray.

The following article is just the opposite of your problem. However, it may shed some light of your problem:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58171 Restarts Instead of Shutting Down
Other possible solutions:
Check the plug connection on the back of the iMac as well as the wall socket connection. Make sure both are firmly in place.
Depending on model iMac check for a stuck power button.
Jammed iMac Power Button Advice
1) TURN THE COMP OFF. Unplug everything and turn the iMac, screen down on a soft cloth, with the bottom facing towards you.
2) Remove the two screws by the foot stand, remove the VGA vent at the top (pry it off with a screw driver), then remove the two outer screws.
3) Starting from the top, slowly pull the bottom shell downwards until it snaps off. Much force is often needed.
4) You can now see the back of the power button. The problem is caused by either or both of the following. The hole is too small, or the tabs are unaligned.
5) To fix the problem that the hole is too small, use a piece of coarse sandpaper and widen the hole slightly.
6) To fix the problem of poorly aligned tabs, just make sure that the tab on the button, fits into the slot in the casing. The tab is on the bottom of the button.
7) Reassemble, and your problem should be cured.
Start using the keyboard to powerup instead of the mac.

  • Cannot restart - log out or shut down...VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
I can't restart, log out or shut down my power book g4. I have always done it through the apple display cinema to which is connected but when I hit the side button on the apple display, nothing happens the light on the bottom-right corner dims but no window pops up with the usual shut down/sleep/log out options.
Even if I try directly from the menu...nothing works except the sleep option.
I tried as well directly from the power book after having it disconnected from the display, does not work.
Disk permissions are repaired, but it did not help.
    PLEASE HELP HELP!
    Many thanks in advance.

Hmm, sounds to me like a software issue. Maybe something is installed which prevents the shutdown. It could be harware (peripherals) too. Try without any connected peripheral (display, usb/firewire-devices, etc.). If that does not work try adding a new user account (you can call it "test") via System Preferences and see if the problem is the same with this user.
    Good luck!

  • Why not shut down mac pro

why not shut down mac pro

For 20 years I have always shut down my computers and peripherals overnight to avoid wasting energy.
Thermal cycling can stress electronics a bit but the only failure I have ever had which might have been due to this was of an ADSL router.
Having computers and monitors sleep will reduce their temperature almost to the same level as if they were switched off completely so the resultant thermal cycling will be almost as great.
I found that my new Mac Pro (4-core) showed processor core temperatures that exceeded 80 deg C when working hard, yet the fan speed never increased above minimum.  Since Intel shows 70 deg. C as maximum rated core temperature (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%20E5-1620%20v2.html), I installed TG Pro (http://www.tunabellysoftware.com/tgpro/) to increase fan speed when any core exceeds 60 deg. C.  Even a full fan speed it is pretty quiet.  I'd be interested in any other comments on this.

    Try a safe boot:

Open Activity Monitor and see if you can identify any application that may be the culprit.  If so, click on it and then the "Quit Process' icon on the menu bar.

I have a HP desktoop computer model sw5705f. It is not allowing me to restart, log off ,or shut down by clicking on them proper icon.  The only way I can shut down is to manually turn off the tower. What could have happened and how do I solve the3m problem?

How long (days) have you hade this problem? Have you tried a restore point prior to that date?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I am wondering if your hard drive is failing? You might try downloading and running SMART Utility on it:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may give you earlier warning of impending drive failure.
You might also want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test and see if you get any error codes.
From the way your hard drive is behaving, it sounds to me like there is something wrong with it. Since reinstalling the OS doesn't solve anything, you are likely dealing with some sort of a hardware issue.
    Good luck!

Note: No iMac PPC is 27".   PPC is for the iMacs that were new until the beginning of 2006.   They are all Intel now.

  • Mac not restarting, logging out, or shutting down?

My mac that I got back in August is no longer restarting, shutting down, or logging off. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button. This becomes a problem when I get software updates that require restarting. Help?

    Aly,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
    More or less it says:
The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the computer. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.
    To reset:
MacBook, MacBook Pro except MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    5. Press the power button to restart the computer
Note: Starting with MacBook Pro (Late 2008) and MacBook (Late 2008) models, you may instead use the reset method for MacBook Air (below) to reset the SMC. All earlier models of MacBook and MacBook Pro must use the method described above, which involves removing the battery.
MacBook Air (Original), MacBook Air (Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off by choosing Shutdown from the Apple () menu.
    2. Connect the power adapter to a working power source.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press (left) Shift-Control-Option along with the power button once.
    4. Wait 5 seconds and press the power button to start the computer.
Note: You must use the keys on the left side of the built-in keyboard.
You should only perform an SMC reset when the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009) has been properly shutdown. This prevents issues from occurring to the file system.
While the power adapter does not need to be connected to reset the SMC, it may be necessary in situations where the battery needs charging or if the computer has been without power for an extended period of time.
Let us know if a reset helps.

  • Script to shut down macs running retrospect client once backup is complete?

This was previously posted in another forum, so apologies, but have been advised this is the best place to post this query.
I have a network of approx 10 macs which are backed up by EMC Retrospect. Under previous versions of Retrospect which ran under system 9 and earlier, you could shut a mac down, it would go to sleep, then when the backup was finished the mac would shut down. This no longer works on OS10.x so we have to leave all the macs on all night to ensure the backup is completed which is a terrible waste of power. So, my question is, is there some way a script could make a mac shut down after an event (eg. after Retrospect has backed up its contents) to prevent us having to run all the computers all night?
There is some extra complexity from the fact that there is one mac running the Retrospect application which talks to all the other macs which run retrospect client. It's only the client macs which need shutting down as Retrospect itself has a function to shut down after backup is complete.
    thanks
    Luke

I searched for "shutdown" in Dantz's (Knowledgebase (found it there: http://www.retrospect.com/supportupdates/technical/retrospect/) and found and article called "Can Retrospect shutdown my Macintosh OS X computer after the backup?" the download of the script is located on the right side (attached file called cShutdown_1.1.dmg) soooo small this link, sooo big the dmg (1MB), soo small the Script (66kb)
The AppleScript (run-only script-installer) creates a crontab (I think) that checks each hour if a Backup has finished that day and shuts down the computer if no user is logged in.
I would try to write a routine on my own, but I do not use retrospect at all, so I do not know how to figure out if a backup has been finished or not...

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/
com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
