"Restart Screen" during start-up

I have OS X 10.3.9 on my Mac Mini. Soon after connecting through a "Linksys" router to the internet, and connecting a "Mighty Mouse", I have been having an issue with starting up. Every time my Mini sits for a few hours after being turned off, when I start it back up, I get a black screen that reads "You must restart you computer now" soon after the desktop is shown. I go through this process a few times until it doesn't do it. I can use the computer for as long as I like, but once I shut down...and restart, the problem starts again. Is there anything I can do?

Your system is experiencing what's called a "kernel panic". You can find some tips on how to isolate the cause and correct the problem here:

Hope it helps.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is

  • MacBook stuck at gray screen during start up

Lately my 2008 model MacBook has been freezing up. When I shut it down, it starts up just fine, however, the last two times I've shut it down, it gets stuck at the gray screen during start up. The first time, I was unsuccessful with a Safe Boot, however I was successful using CommandOption+PR to reset my NVRAM/PRAM. It has been working fine for the past two days, but it froze again this evening. I tried Safe Booting, removing peripherals, resetting the NVRAM/PRAM and I even was able to repair the disk and the permissions, but still, I am unsuccessful during a start up.
When I did try to "Perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X", it said my computer was not able to install 10.5 (I run 10.6) because it did not meet the system requirements.
As a final effort, I tried doing another SafeBoot, this time viewing the status. It has been stuck at a console screen that reads "disk0s2: media is not present...." for about ten minutes now, if that helps at all.
Any advice on how to fix this would be highly appreciated. And yes, I have read the Gray screen article

Your hard drive may be damaged or requires reformatting. You might try this to start:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you still are unable to restart or if DU cannot repair the drive or the SMART status is not "verified" then you can try reformatting the drive to see if that fixes the problem, otherwise you will have to replace the drive.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
And, you cannot do an Archive and Install of Leopard over a Snow Leopard installation. You have to reinstall using the Snow Leopard installer.

  • What would cause a prolonged blue screen during start up?

I have an iMac desktop.  Recently I've had trouble with a prolonged blue screen during start up (approx. 10 mins) before it finally takes me to the login screen.  Any ideas why this is happening?

    Hi Jeff,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem Startup for clues.

My ipad 2 suddenly show red screen during start up and on ordinary screen show red colure fill the screen , I think it is hardware problem mostly screen. This problem didn't happen after fall or only accident ,what shall I do ?

You could try a reset and see if that fixes it : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If it doesn't then you could try restoring to your last backup and/or resetting back to factory defaults. But if it's a hardware issue then you will need to contact Apple.

  • Software Updated to 10.4.6, no just a black RESTART screen at Start up

Big trouble with the upgrade to 10.4.6. Went through software update and it appeared to be goig fine until the error that the pkg had to be reinstalled because of an error. Then clicked off that and computer hung. Waited 20 minutes with no results (and could not do anything) so tried to relaunch the Finder to get unstuck. Then nothing worked, Held power button to restart, and siince then, cannot get past the black screen at start up.
Have restarted ok from the tiger disc and did a first aid disk repair with one fix to the hard drive, but then no change in the results. Looked at start up disks from the drop downs and saw that the HD says 10.4.6.
What options do I have? I have an ext HDD, but cannot boot off it. I could erase and reload everything, but I really want to get some files off the eMac's HD.
I have no other Mac w/firewire.
    Thanks

    Hi thetomkat4,
if you can follow Gullivers advice redarding booting in save mode and after repairing the permissions on your startup disk,
I'ld recommend you to install Tiger on your ext HDD, too. Or an a partition on your startup disk, in case you've made partitions.
My system is running in this manner, with the external always one system version "behind", so I can be sure that it will work. And if my normal startup disk will not work I can start my iMac from the external disk, pressing "option" on startup.
For updating your system always walk through a recommended and long tested method, which you can read here: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060403142321217
under the headline: Update process recommendation
Updating this way I never had troubles during update since Mac OS X 10.2.5 (where I began to work with OS X).
If you don't own the "killer-app" for system-troubles, DiskWarrior from Alsoft, think about to buy it. It's worth the price and if you do a search here on "discussions" you will only hear positive comments about this masterpiece of software. Running it before and after an update (it's on a bootable cd-rom) will eleminate all possible bugs in your system. I highly recommend it.
    I hope that helps

  • Imac shows super weird lines on screen during start up and then freezes at blue screen (WITH PHOTO)

My Imac froze earlier today as I was dragging an image from safari into indesig and when it froze the weirdest pattern overlaid the screen. It looked just like the opacity pattern from photoshop with grey and white squares. I turned the computer off using the power button and unplugged everything.
Now when I try to start it these weird lines appear on my start up screen (see link)...
    http://meijerladdaruppgrejer.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/oops/
as you can see the apple and the wheel appears as normal...
... then it moves to a normal looking white screen (perhaps a bit greener than usual) and around 30 seconds later freezes at the blue screen.
    I've tried the cmd + alt + p + r several times but it won't help.
If i press alt during start up I can see and choose my hard drive but just end up at the blue screen again.
Can I try starting it up in safe mode or something?
    Thanks! Any input is welcome.

Is this the same problem? Verical Lines" seems a bit diffuse. I've seached for a similar question and found a lot of other types of lines and stripes.
    Could this be a solution?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3824?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If so, how do I install the update if I can't get passed the blue screen? Can I start my Imac in safe mode? How?
iMac (Mid 2011): Unresponsive white screen on startup or vertical lines on screen
    Symptoms
In certain circumstances, your iMac (Mid 2011) may become unresponsive on startup, with a white or gray background on the display. You may also notice vertical lines on the display while using your iMac.
    Resolution
Install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0 if your computer exhibits these issues. To install the update, chooseSoftware Update from the Apple () menu and follow the onscreen instructions.
Important: Do not interrupt the power to the computer while the update is installing. After the update is finished installing, you will need to restart your iMac.

  • Grey/blue/please restart screen at start up...please help!!!!

    Hi everyone,
I am new here and I desperately need help in fixing my ibook. Today it started acting up and I have been doing nothing but research all day about how to fix it.
Problem: As the subject states, when I start my computer, I am left with 3 different scenarios (I had to reboot numerous times) - blue screen, grey screen, or "please restart" screen and I cannot get pass that.
Fix thus far: I have gathered information and realized I will probably have to reinstall OS X at this point. So I tried doing that...holding "c" with the OS X Install disc in the drive. I followed the directions....pushing continue and get to the screen that ask me for location of the drive to install in. Here is my problem. I believe I should see and be able to select an icon available drive destination. Unfortunately there are no icon for the drive....there is no icon for anything I can select at all. Without that, the "continue" option is not available so I can not move forward....
I decided to try running the Apple Hardware Test disk to see if anything can come out of that. At the end of a 20 run through, all hardware seem to be fine and the test reported no problems of any sort....
If anyone can tell me what do I do now...I would really really appreciate it. I know there's another thread asking about the grey screen. However it mentions nothing about after doing the installation screen and the lack of destination to select from. Please help! Thank you all in advance.

    Hello azndrgnkid,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
"(I had to reboot numerous times) - blue screen, grey screen, or "please restart" screen and I cannot get pass that."
Just for future reference, the "please restart" screen that you are seeing means that you are experiencing a Kernel Panic.
    See:
"Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)"
    "What is a Kernel Panic?"
"Mac OS X: How to log a Kernel Panic"
"Resolving Kernel Panics" (FAQ authored by Dr. Smoke of the X-Lab)
Hopefully the information provided in those links will give you the solution but if not or if you need to post back with any comments or questions please do.

  • Blue Screen during start up

just conducted a software update and during the restart the computer screen stays blue. I tried restarting a few times but the blue screen is here to stay.

    PanzerTank wrote:
Anyone know whats with the start up blue screen??
It is normal to see a blue screen after the first grey screen, which occurs around the time the boot loader hands off control of the startup process to Leopard & its display driver takes control of the screen. It is also normal for the blue color to change slightly as Leopard's startup sequence loads the color profile for your monitor.
FWIW, the startup process is called "booting" because of the analogy to pulling oneself up by your own bootstraps. In the same way that is literally impossible it is impossible for the OS to load itself if it isn't already loaded, so what actually happens is a series of ever larger & more capable bodies of code load, initialize, & execute, culminating in OS X being loaded & in control of the machine. What you are seeing is the effects of that process on the display.

  • TS1587 I have a gray screen during start up and  asked to start again

I cannot start up my iMac. A message popped up and asked me to restart again.

I don't know what model of iMac or what version of the OS you have
It would be helpful information for any one who wants to help you.
Is this what you are seeing?
If it is, what you are seeing is called a Kernel Panic.
Did you add Ram recently? Bad RAM can cause these.
-First thing to try, is Zap the PRAM Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
-Try starting in safe mode to see if it will start up.
If it does, then restart normally and see if the problem is still present.
-You can also run disk utility to verify and repair your hard drive if needed.
If you have any original installation disks that came with your iMac, try starting from it by inserting the disk and holding C at startup until you see the Apple on screen.
Once it as started up from the disk, open disk utility from the menu bar at the top of your screen and run it..
-If you have a recent and complete backup, you could also try erasing the disk and reinstalling your system and then restoring from your backup.
See here for some troubleshooting help.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mchlp2890.html
    If nothing works:
If you are still in the first 90 days since buying your iMac, you can call Apple for some support over the phone.
You will get a case number that you can use when you call back  in case the problem is more complex and your machine needs repair.
If you are out of the 90 days period, but still in the one year warranty period, take the iMac to an AASP for repair.

  • Black screen during starting up windows XP

Hi everybody I am using MBP.
Whenever I use BootCamp to start my Windows XP, after appearing the Windows XP logo and the loading bar, the monitor goes to near complete darkness, not 100% dark. After a minute or two, the login screen appears. I want to know why the screen was blackened was such a long time. I have the Parallel installed. This problem does not appear when I was using it in early stage.

    It was the PRAM.

  • White screen during start up

I shut down my 21 inch desktop the proper way and when I went to turn it back on I end up with a white screen. You can hear the chime like usual, but then I get a white screen. When I shut it down, it was working properly. What could wrong and how can I fix it?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First boot into Safe Mode, if this does not work boot into both a SMC and PRAM reset several times back to back. Follow the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If that does not work then please carefully read the rest of Apple's instructions in Gray screen appears during startup

    Welcome to the Discussions!
The first thing to do would be to boot from your original Disk 1 by:
    1. Inserting the disc, pressing the power button, and immediately after the startup chime, press and hold the C key until you see the spinning gear icon appear on the grey splash screen.
    2. After the machine has booted, pick your language, and when the Installer window appears, do not press Continue, but go to the Utilities menu in the menubar and open Disk Utility.
    3. In Disk Utility, choose your normal startup volume in the pane on the left and then click Repair Disk. If any errors show in the window, run Repair Disk again until you see 'The volume appears to be OK' in green.
    4. Quit Disk Utility, quit the installer and attempt to restart into your regular startup volume.
Please update your profile so we have a clearer picture of your particular machine.

  • White screen during starting

When I switch on my mac mini the display just shows a white screen and nothing happens afterwards and it just won't start from there. The problem remains for a few days and then it miraculously disappears.
Then my mac mini works fine for a few months and then the problem starts appearing after a few months.
Well if someone could please provide me with some information as to this strange occurrence I would be grateful.

I'll elaborate further on and I think I have found a grotesque solution for it.
My mac mini works fine lets for for a few weeks and when i disconnect the cords for cleaning the mac mini and when the cords are reconnected and it is switched on that's when the problem occurs.
Once again I could not contain my anger and let out a stream of swear words.
After that I took the mac mini and holding on to the sides of it with my hands I moved it upwards and downwards against the air in an inverted position(the DVD slot downwards) and after that I attached the cords and **** everything worked fine.
A week later I again removed the cords for cleaning and after having the same problem I again did as before and wow it just resolved.
A couple of weeks later the same problem erupted after disconnecting the cords for cleaning.
This time it took longer than before for the problem to correct itself but yeah it eventually did after trying for half an hour. Try this I don't think you have anything to lose.
The problem that you are mentioning, I also hear the gears revving up but my friend tells me that's the hard drive start up noise ( sleep the mac mini and after a few minutes wake it up you will hear a similar noise that's the hard disk starting up). I do get that infamous tone, strange as to why you do not get it.
Do you get what's sounds like three separate beeps and if its that then it could be a memory problem, I had it when I just it purchased over two years ago. The machine was under warranty so It was taken care of by the service people.
