What you are seeing is called a kernel panic. Usually it is caused by a hardware problem. Bad RAM is often the culprit.
Clues as to what is causing it can be found in the /Library/Logs/panic.log file.

  • Restart screen in four languages?

    Please help. Every single time I turn on my iBook G4 it boots up just fine and my wallpaper comes up and everything seems to load just fine. Then all of a sudden the whole screen dims gray and in the center a box appears telling me to restart my computer in four different languages. So, I do...and it happens again and again. This has been going on for a day or so now... Whats wrong?

    Hi Steve,
    welcome to Apple Discussions!
    This is a kernel panic. First idea that comes to mind is "did this start to happen right after upgrading RAM?"
    but you'd better have a good read of this article for methodical troubleshooting:

  • Black "Restart" Screen - In 5 Languages

    My nephew's iMac 4,1 had slowed to a crawl and was freezing.  We bumped the machine up to 2GB and upgraded to 10.6.3.  All appeared to go well, but he is now experiencing the screen greying out (like just before the screen goes black for inactivity) and a black box slowly descends with the words, "You need to restart your computer.  Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  Message is repeated 4 more times in French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.  Anybody ever see this?  It has happened at least 4 times in the 5 days since we did the upgrade.  Is this the Mac equivalent of the PC Blue-Screen-Of-Death?  Is this symptomatic of a dying MotherBoard?  Did my $50 fix NOT forestall the purchase of a new Mac?
    Thanks in advance.
    Alex

    Do not attempt to update a Mac until it is running perfectly.
    Kernel panics are generally hardweare related, often due to faulty of badly seated RAM modules.

  • Grey screen restart in several different languages

    My ibook G4 (2005/6) greys out. My friend's computer did the same thing and replaced the airport card and sorted the problem. My apple dealer told me it was logic board? My airport card isn't easily found as the puter is older.
    what do I do.

    Hi wickovski, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Grey screen restart in several different languages
    That is a Kernal Panic, your dealer may be right. See if it does it trying below.
    Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
    Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

    Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.
    Here's the list and downloads for AHT...

  • Multi-language Restart Screen at  Startup???

    Hello,
    My MBP has started showing me the multilanguage 'You must restart your machine' screen every time I attempt to start it up. In the last week or so it has been taking much longer to start up and some weird things have been happening like it take a long time for the icons to load up when I open my Applications folder.
    I am on a 13" MBP, the 2.4 dual core model and have 8 gigs of third party ram installed. The ram has been in the machine since September and has worked just fine (both the ram and machine were bought brand new).
    Just a few other points, I can not boot off of the Leopard install disk, it just hangs then I get the same restart screen however I can load up my windows partition (bootcamp) and it works just fine.
    I'm not sure if its a kernel thing and my ram has gone bad or what but I can't get into the OSX side of my computer no matter what I do. I have everything backed up so reformatting won't be a problem if that would solve it but I can't even get to the disk to do it.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    You need to attempt to restart it with the gray DVD that came with it. If it was purchased last September, then no other DVD will be able to boot it. If you do get it to boot, then run the diagnostics from Disk Utility. Also, you should run the hardware test that is available on the same DVD.

    Hi,
    You need to install the language from SMLT transaction and then you need to set language parameter in RZ10 in instance profile and then give a system restart. By this way, you can install the language.
    Thanks

  • Empty trash with large file causes immediate restart screen

    I had a 200+ gig iMovie which I dragged to trash. During the delete, the system "crashed" with a gray screen prompt that tells me to perform a forced hard restart. After rebooting, I look at the file size and it's 70+ gig. So perhaps some bad sectors or something? Anyway, unable to trash what is left of this file as I get the gray restart screen every time?
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

  • After running Magician app many files where deleted and after restarting I received the language portion of when you first start to set up a new Mac

    After running Magician app many files where deleted from my computer, nothing new,  After restarting I received the language portion of when you first start to set up a new Mac. Except after the language portion it went immediately to 5 options; install back-up from Time Machine, Disk Utility, Restart from start up disc, etc. I tried doing them all. Disc repair, rebooting from TM, but I don't save everything from TM I use an external HD for backup. None of those options are working for me. Now I get a grey screen with a flashing globe for so many minutes then a folder appears with a ? In the middle of it. What am I to do? Can anyone help me, please!!!

    I appreciate the extra forums you suggested I look into. I ended up forceing a Safe Mode reboot on my Mac  holding the Shift key. I let the installation process commence and I'm back to the way things were.

  • Grey restart screen when empty trash

    I get the grey restart screen when I empty the trash when certain files are in it. If I take the files out, I can empty the rest of the stuff in the trash, but if I put those files back in, I get the grey reset screen again. The files are on an external drive, and I have run both diskwarrior and Techtool on the drive, and they both say that the data is ok. So in short, is there any particular reason that this should be going on, and is there any way to delete those files, other than throwing them away, or wiping the hard drive clean? thanks for the help in advance!
    Quicksilver 867 Mac OS X (10.4)

    just to clarify, is this "grey restart screen" a lovely grey overlay on your screen with the message to restart your computer printed in the middle in about 7 different languages? if so, that would be what we call a kernel panic, and it's useful to use that term for discussion purposes.
    aside from clarifying that,... we'll also need more details about the files and external media.
    if you feel up to it, you might try doing an rm in the terminal to see if that'll get rid of the files in question (go to the terminal, and type 'rm ' (don't type the quotes. they're only there to make sure you get the space) and then drag the file to the terminal to append its path to the command, and then hit return)

  • How to reload the screen when changing languages in JavaFX 2?

    I'm beginner with javaFX and i need to change language of the screen. but i have no idea how to reload the screen when the language was changed. The application have a button where have the language available. I want just refresh screen when the user change language.
    Here is the start method to show the stage.
        @Override
        public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception
            this.stage = stage;
            Locale locale = Locale.getDefault();
            ResourceBundle rb = ResourceBundle.getBundle("resources/Label",locale);
            loader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("FXMLDocument.fxml"),rb);
            root = (Parent)loader.load();
            FXMLDocumentController controller = (FXMLDocumentController) loader.getController();
            controller.setMain(this);
            scene = new Scene(root);
            stage.setScene(scene);
            stage.show();
    here is the function to change the language(in the same class with start function),the rb is the new ResourceBundle:
        public void refresh(ResourceBundle rb)
              //change the language here
    1. I don't want to use the resourceBundle to get value in resource file and set label in scene one by one.like following:
    this.btnLabel.setText(rb.getString(key.test));
    2. I don't want to reload the scene,like following:
        public void refresh(ResourceBundle rb)
             try
                loader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("FXMLDocument.fxml"),rb);
                root = (Parent)loader.load();
                scene.setRoot(root);
                FXMLDocumentController controller = (FXMLDocumentController) loader.getController();
                controller.setMain(this);
            catch(Exception err)
                err.printStackTrace();
    So do we have a solution to just set the resourceBundle and reload the scene easier?
    Thanks and best regards!

    Your option 2 (reload the FXML for the scene using the new resource bundle as a parameter), is the way this would normally be done and what I would recommend.
    Failing that, you could use option 1 of individually resetting the label text of labeled items (I don't really recommend this).
    Why don't you want to use option 2?
    Perhaps it is because there is some internal state of the UI which differs from the initial state when the the UI is first loaded (e.g. user has typed text in a text field and you want to preserve that).  If that's the case you will need to either go with your option 1 of individually resetting the label text of labeled items, or implement something which preserves the UI state and user data by saving it in memory or to disk, reloading the UI via the FXMLLoader (essentially your option 2), then restoring the UI state and user data to what it was before the language change.  Preserving and restoring the modified state seems complicated to me if you have a lot of state, so I wouldn't really advise this approach unless you really needed it.

  • Trying to install and get black restart screen

    I've been trying to install an extra version of Tiger on a back up drive I have. I'm finding it very hard to do however and I was wondering if it might have anything to do with having a TT Pro edrive also on the back up drive? I've tried installing Tiger several times and once I did get it installed but upon trying to start it up I just got the black restart screen again. I've never had any trouble using this drive for random storage and back up before.
    As a last ditch effort I have removed the edrive and I am erasing and zeroing the drive completely. I guess I'll then reformat it and give it a try again and see what happens then, unless someone else has any suggestions.

    Hello ubedali2890,
    Thanks for giving it plenty of time to load up, and yes, 12 hours should have been plenty of time.
    I found an update article that states, "Learn what to do if the update or restore never completes, the progress bar hasn't moved for an extended period of time, your device isn't responding, or it won't start."
    It links to this article:
    iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
    The relevant steps seem to be
    3. If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
    5. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
         1. Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
         2. If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
         3. If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
    6. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.

  • Kernal panic - gray restart screen on doing TM backup

    Every time TM gets part way through a backup I get the multilingual restart screen. I've turned off TM and everything else works fine. This is on my wife's Intel iMac running 10.6.7. I installed a widget that gave me this info. Does this mean something to you experts?

    Did a repair on my external LaCie, which really needed it. Restarted TM and backups are working fine.
