Restart USB daemon or something?

Every once in a while I get connection errors when my Macbook wakes up. USB connected devices either don't respond, connections errors appear, etc. Most of these times it has something to do with the printer/scanner I have. Funniest thing is, sometimes the printer does work while the scanner doesn't.
Logging out of the account and then back in fixes the problem. Instead, I would like to restart the USB daemon 'or something' to make it re-discover all connected USB devices.
Any ideas?

HI Rob,
The problems you are experiencing sound like "kernel panics" ... go here to find out how to problem solve with these procedures:

  • Restart lmtp daemon

    Hi,
is it possible to restart an individual proccess in Mail Service?
I want to restart lmtp daemon.
    Is it in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons?
Another question? I've read launchctl documentation but I dont understand the differences betweeb load -w and load without -w. The same for unload. Can somebody explain me that difference?
    Thanks for all.

lmtpd is spawned each time the posftix daemon needs it. There's no ability to stop/start it outside of Postfix since it doesn't really apply - when the master postfix process has a message for lmtpd it fires it up. When that message is done, that process dies.
So at best, even if it could be done, the only thing you'd restart would be processes that are currently being handled by lmtpd. Given the nature of lmtpd that probably doesn't account for a lot.
dont understand the differences betweeb load -w and load without -w. The same for unload. Can somebody explain me that difference?
-w writes the change to the .plist, so that the process will be loaded/unloaded after a reboot.
Without the -w switch the process will be loaded/unloaded now, but will revert to its normal state after a reboot.

  • Manually restart crs daemon in Cluster RAC 11gR2 (11.2)

In Cluster RAC 11g release2 (11.2) on Linux Platform (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 ), if crs daemon fall down, is it possible to restart manually (in old version: init.crsd start) ? If yes, how?

    ok I've opened another thread:

  • Have to keep restarting network daemon

I have my netowrk setup as DHCP as a static IP doesnt seem to want to work at all
This is a fresh install so I'm trying to download packages and it will download 20 or 30 megs and then suddenly quit. I have kill pacman, delete the db.lck file, and run /etc/rc.d/network restart in order for it to continue
I finally got a pacman -Syu to run all the way through and even after that it still continues to give me this problem
I dont believe it is hardware problem because I do not have this problem in Windows.
dmesg | grep eth0 just fills up my screen with lines that say eth0: link is up
Tried different network cable just to be sure, and that's not the issue
    Thanks

  • Problem with detecting USB devices.. something abt ehci-hcd??

    Hi All,
I have a DELL E6410 laptop. I have a problem with connecting USB devices.
Whenever a power event (such as connecting/disconnecting of AC adaptor) happens, my laptop stops detecting any USB devices and any changes that happen on the USB ports. That is, say an external mouse is connected to the laptop, the mouse stops functioning, and if I connect a mouse/USB_stick or any such thing to the computer, the device is not detected.
dmesg output show that any connecting/disconnecting events are not detected by the computer. lsusb output too shows the same thing.
To solve the problem, I need to rmmod the module ehci-hcd and modprobe it back. That is, I have to run the commands rmmod ehci-hcd followed by modprobe ehci-hcd. Then, this problem goes away until the next power event happens.
This event does not happen all the time, but it happens very regularly.
Here are the kernel and laptop specs..
    uname -a
    Linux myhost 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Aug 30 08:53:25 CEST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Kindly help me on this issue.
    Thanks

This is the output of kernel.log when I unplug my AC adaptor with the external USB mouse connected.

  • LMS 4.2 User Defined Groups Empty after Daemon restart

    Hello
    I need some help here.
In order to get topology services to run on a non resolvable DNS server I have followed the instructions in the online help and got Topology Services to start. My issue now is that all my userdefined groups are empty and I can not edit them - it gives me a error message.
Checked the parent groups and these are as supposed - the system groups - subnet groups fx are also populated.
    What do you advise?
I have read oither posts and some people were advised to restart crmdmgtd as in this thread:
    net stop crmdmgtd
    net start crmdmgtd
    http://https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3414498#3414498
Should I just follow the same steps? I can not see find this process in 4.2
    Thanks Isaac
PS: These were the steps followed in order to make Topology Services to work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------                  The Cisco Prime LMS client must be able to resolve the hostname of the Cisco Prime LMS server to  server's IP  Address, through DNS.
If the Cisco Prime LMS server is not DNS resolvable, Cisco Prime LMS client can access it with the IP  address itself, by performing the following steps:
Open the orb.properties file. Solaris or Soft Appliance: NMSROOT/lib/classpath Windows: NMSROOT\lib\classpath where NMSROOT is the directory where you have installed Cisco Prime LMS. Set the property as follows: jacorb.dns.enable=off Go to Admin > Trust Management > Local Server > Certificate Setup.
The Certificate Setup page appears. Enter the IP Address of the Cisco Prime LMS Server in the Hostname textbox. Populate the other columns as explained in the Online help for Administration of Cisco Prime LAN  Management Solution 4.2. Click Apply to generate the self-signed certificate. Restart the daemons. See the Online help for Administration of Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution 4.2 for instructions. You will be able to launch Topology Services with the IP address itself.

Hi Michel and thanks for the reply.
The "Physical Location" groups magically started working.  I had tried to apply a bunch of device update packages a couple of days ago.  I thought they all failed but maybe some of them actually applied.  I have no idea but the 2 groups with a rule like this one are now populating:
    Device.Hostname startswith "XYZ"
However, the groups with the rule below are still failing to populate in the device selector even though if I edit the group the "Objects matching criteria" list contains the correct members:
    Device.Admin_responsibility equals "XYZ"
Admin_responsibility is user defined field 1 (Admin => Device Credential Settings => User Defined Fields).
If you mean "dynamic" in that they are supposed to automatically update then yes these are dynamic public groups.  I had them defined this way for years in LMS 2.6, though the "dynamic" part never worked.  I always had to go into group admin and manually refresh to get the groups to update.  I have tried that several times in 4.1 with no luck.

  • Failure to boot after restarting, no distinct pattern.

My Mac Pro has an issue where every third or fourth restart the mac will fail to boot, needing me to hold the power button until it turns off.
I get the grey apple and the spinning progress wheel for 30 seconds, then the screen stays grey and the apple is replaced by what looks like a circle with a diagonal bar through it. I believe this means something along the lines of 'No Bootable Directory Found'.
Before the 10.5.2 update this happened almost every restart. I'm using a Samsung Spinpoint 750gig drive as my boot drive, and the stock 500gig drive as a media disk.
I have tried several solutions. Repair permissions, Disk Utility from CD and run verify and repair disk, AHT extensive, TechTool Deluxe with surface scan, Format and Reinstall (twice), Memtest, NVRam.
Could the Samsung drive be bad even though I can't get any software to find a fault?

Here is a console log of the most recent failure to boot. The events here are a restart, a failure to boot, a forced off and a power on. Hopefully this helps.

  • Would like to know if I can connect a macbook pro and link to a PC in any way and still access the macbook pro's files. Display is out/have black screen. I want to back up before I send for repair, but don't own another mac to restart 7.

Is there any way to connect my 2011 macbook pro to my PC laptop (Dell) so that I can get files off of the Mac? The display on the pro is out and I've got a black screen. The computer turns on. Actually it turned on one time after many tries and when I took it the Mac store the guy hit restart before I could stop him. I don't have another Mac to back up files to in restart 7 mode and I can't see my external hard drive to copy to when the computer has no display, so I am at a loss on how to get the files. I would like to get them before I send in for repairs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The only other thing I can think of is to pull the drive out and hook it to another machine with a USB enclosure. Something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388312417&sr=8-2&keywords=2.5+enclosure
Then you could read it like an external USB drive. It's easy to open up and get the drive out.

  • USB devices all of a sudden no longer recognized in windows 7

    Hi,
I am using a HP Pavilion Simline s5550nl edition with windows 7 home premium (64-bit) since 1.5 years. Never had any problems until 3 days ago. Since 3 days suddenly some new devices, already plugged-in devices and previously used devices are no longer recognized (USB-device not recognized-error after plug-in).
I used an USB-mouse, USB-keyboard, Smartcard-reader, Sony Story 1.5TB External HDD, USB WebCam. They al worked fine.
3 Days ago I bought a WD Elements 2 TB External HDD. After plugging in, it was not recognized at first. Replugging it in it was recognized, but trying to open the drive in Explorer, it gave a not-formatted-error (while the disk should have been pre-formatted for Windows 7). However, i tried to format the disk, but it could not reach it any more. After rebooting the system the WD elements HDD gave the USB-device-not-recognized-error, using all other USB-ports didn't change that. In fact my Sony External HDD was no longer reachable either. Unplugging and replugging it in gave the same USB-device-not-recognized-error. Trying previously flawless working USB-devices all gave the same USB-device-not-recognized-errors (USB-flash disk 4GB, External HDD 2.5inch 160GB, USB-/card reader HUB, iPhone).
I then tried to connect my Sony and WD external HDD on my other computer with windows XP SP3. They were recognized within seconds and working fine (also the WD elements External HDD indeed turned out to be pre-formatted).
Strangely enough my USB-mouse, USB-keyboard and smartcard-reader kept being recognized at plug-in. Furthermore, my printers (connected over LAN) and NAS (connected over LAN) were usable without any problem. I did not encounter any other problems in functionality of windows. I then thought it might be a corrupted general USB-driver for mass-storage or something, so I started to google this problem. Things I have done so far (before each step I unplugged all USB-devices, rebooted and reconnected the devices):
    - Turning computer off, unplug power-cable for 2 minutes, reboot.
    - Updating BIOS to version 6.04 (was running version 6.02).
    - Uninstalling all USB-devices/mainhubs etc in devicemanagement, automatic reinstallation at restart.
    - Try installing newer USB-drivers for mainhubs, messages the installed drivers are already the latest.
    - Uninstalling all 'hidden' USB-devices.
    - Trying to go back to configuration of 1 day ago (maximum i could go back), resulted in an error that  the file might be corrupted.
    - Turning computer off, unplug power-cable overnight, reboot.
    - Running HP-systemdiagnostics: all passed.
    - Running Norman anti-virus scan (latest update): no infection.
    - Again uninstalling all USB-devices/mainhubs etc, automatic reinstallation at restart.
I also noticed that during the night before this malfunction appeared (so actually several hours), on january 20th, an automated microsoft critical update was installed (some anti-spyware definition update). I am now thinking it might still be a driver-problem of some sort of general USB-mass storage driver or due to this microsoft update or maybe some clever virus.
I no ordered a Recovery disk (never had to use one, so did not jet own one), to recover windows and if that doesn't help reinstall it. However I hope that anyone can bring up a solution that I am overlooking?
    D. Berks

OK, meanwhile I found that only uninstalling the USB2-driver enables the USB-ports again. Uninstalling it makes al devices recognizable, whil reintsalling it immediately makes all USB-devices unrecognizable.
I tried updating the driver to the latest version, deleting it (after reboot an automated reinstall is triggered), but nothing helps. As if soething that stays in the system makes USB2 to corrupt USB-channeling or something.
I strongly believe that it has something to do with the windows-update, but I can nowhere as a question about it to microsoft (will cost 70 euro's!).
Does anybody knows what this could be? Or better: knows of a solution?
    Tanks,

  • Macbook Pro freezes when I plug in USB

I've not changed anything about my Macbook Pro (13" early 2011) except upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and now when I plug in my USB hub (which only has my keyboard, mouse and printer connected to it) the computer freezes completely and I have to press and hold the power button to restart it. If it doesn't do that, then it just doesn't recognise that the USB has been plugged in at all.
Is this an issue with the USB port or something else? I still have AppleCare so will take it to an Apple Store if I can't find out how to solve this problem myself. Anyone had this issue and found a solution?
    Thanks.

Did you also try this when booted to the Recovery HD volume? If not then give this a try. In addition, while troubleshooting unplug all USB devices (includeing the keyboard) and try with another device such as only the mouse, which should allow you to move the cursor on screen. What you've done so far is only half of the picture, and doing this with the mouse both in normal boot and when booted to the Recovery HD partition would help determine what the problem is.
It is sounding like the issue is not with the printer and instead is with your computer, so hopefully its just a software configuration snafu, but it could be a problem with hardware.
If you find the mouse will not properly work in any port when booted to the Recovery HD partition, then run the Apple Hardware Test suite (see here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57352461-263/how-to-invoke-and-interpret-th e-apple-hardware-tests/, but do not run the "extended" test) and see if they bring up any problems. If so then write them down and post what they are here.

Which OS you are using (W2k or XP)?
Have you tried to connect it "on the fly".
Remove USB cable and restart you laptop. Then when Windoes is up and running, connect the cards USB cable back to laptops USB port.
Now OS should give you an information 'bout Found/Installing New USB Device (or something like that) if your card is not properly set/installed before. If it asks for drivers let it look the best (since drivers are installed already). etc.
