Restarted server, now it won't boot.  "returning from start, res=true"

I restarted my 10.4.10 server and the bugger doesn't want to come back up. The grey apple splash screen pops up for a few seconds and then it dumps me into single user mode with the following:
returning from start, res=true
What is this? How can I get my server back up? I'm currently running disk util.

Phew, FIXED! Sorry I didn't update this any earlier. I booted in verbose and found that I was being booted to Single User mode after the system couldn't find the hostconfig file. Strange that it was missing. Minutes before restarting, I was changing some system prefs and the system stopped responding. I'm assuming this hiccup caused some kind of corruption in the hostconfig file. Anyway, I created a new hostconfig file and all is well! I just had to turn on my services once the system was up.

  • My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD.

My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD to install the OS package. It would boot for a while, get through the first cd of install and would stop randomly in the next install. I found out that the installation disk was cracked so I went out and purchased the Mac Box Set which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09 under advisement from an associate at the local apple store. Now, I try installing this new OS disk and all I get is the apple logo without a spinning wheel for about 10 minutes and the computer restarts and does it again. I have tried booting from disk, holding c while starting up, and in safemode, holding shift while booting. Please help save my poor poor macbook!!!

These errors look like corrupt or missing files that leopard requires. It sound like you need to start from scratch: format your drive, reload Leopard. I realize that this is probably what you are trying to do.
If you cannot boot from install DVD and cannot successfully get into Safemode or Single usermode (due to a corrupt or incomplete install) then you will need another computer to assist you.
If you can get it into Target Disk Mode and have another Mac you could plug it into that Mac and reformat it.
If it will not go into TDM then you may need to take it out and put it into an external enclosure to plug into another Mac to format it.

  • OS X Server 10.4 won't boot: AppleFileServer: Server crashed and exited...

OS X Server 10.4 won't boot. Starting in verbose mode the error is :
/usr/sbin/AppleFileServer: Server crashed and exited with status 4.\n
Ran fsck, and reported errors. Ran DiskWarrior and those errors seem to have cleared up. Running fsck now reports clean. Running disk utility reports no errors.
Must be a corrupt config file, but where to begin?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks!

    Your enclosure is locked.
When the enclosure is locked, keyboard input is disabled (as a security measure).
Unlock the enclosure (the little lock wheel on the front of the server) and your keyboard will magically start working.

  • Changed access permissions now machine won't boot. Utilising deep breathing techniques until help appears.

Maybe a brain snap but I changed the access permissions on the hardrive to everyone-no access, what do I need to do. After  20 minutes of beachballing I pmowered down, and now it won't boot up, gets stuck on the apple boot up screen. There also exists in permissions another access setting  admin-readwrite. Would appreciate some heads up on what I can do (trying not to panic).

    Hello dwb,
Here is the screen shot, just the top half, there are another 10 pages, but I guess this should enough for you to have an idea of waht is going on, bit small I am afraid. No, I don't have any apps setup to run when I open my computer, the kernel, varies between 290 and 305 per cent ish.
Would that PRAM thing help ? I think it may be the computer itself, well something inside, as this the first time that the fan has ever started running since I have this computer, even when I have 3 or 4 apps running.
Thank you again for your advice,

  • Encore CS5 won't boot up from desktop icon in Windows 7

Encore CS5 won't boot up from desktop in Windows 7 64bit version.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for that reply.
I have always opened it separately from Premiere in the past.  In this instance I have some MPEG files unrelated to Premiere.
No problems during install or reinstall.  No error messages when clicking on the desktop icon.
It seems to not be part of the Cloud suite at all.
    The system is Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit with 16gb memory i7-2700K CPU @ 3.5Ghz.
Lets know if more information needed.  One thread suggested that it needs an update to pxengine (owned by Roxio) but I could not locate it at their site – it appears to be integrated into their programs, of which I have Roxio Creator 2012 installed.

  • FileMaker Server problem on Mac Mini Server - Mac Mini won't boot

I just installed a brand new Mac Mini Server today, and also FileMaker Server 11. A first-timer for both Mac OS X Server and FileMaker Server, I made an error as explained below, and right now I don't know how to get back on track with the system. It won't boot.
    So, how did this happen?
At first everything was proceeding according to plan. I configured the pre-installed Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini with users, groups and services. This was tested from clients and this seemed to work just fine. Then I installed and configured FileMaker Server. This was also tested from a client, and the example database that came with FMS was served up just fine.
The problem arose when I tried to install my existing FileMaker databases. I simply checked to see where in the file system the example database was located, and then copied my old databases to that location (I think it was Library > FileMaker Server > Data > Databases or something close to it - can't check it now...). I had the FileMaker Server Admin Console running, and hit the Refresh button hoping that this would make FileMaker Server find the databases.
This was my first error. I should have read ahead in the instructions to see that one is supposed to use an Upload Database assistant instead...
What happened when I hit refresh was that the FileMaker Server Admin Console became completely unresponsive with a spinning ball as cursor. I left it for about an hour hoping it would terminate, but gave up and tried to shut it down. It wouldn't close, so I force quit it from the Finder. Then I tried to shut down FileMaker Server, but I needed to force quit this as well. After this I thought it would be best to reboot the Mac Mini, so I shut it down, but now it won't even boot, it just stays on the screen with the spinning wheel for ever!
I have tried all the keyboard options while booting, but nothing seems to help. In safe mode, the grey progress bar just grows to about one third, then disappears and leaves the eternally spinning wheel.
The server version of the Mac Mini doesn't have an optical drive, only two internal hard drives. I tried to reinstall from scratch using the optical drive on another Mac on the network. The startup disk appeared when I tried to boot the Mac Mini holding down the option key, and after about 20 minutes or so of the spinning wheel I could actually access the discs. I started by running Disk Utility to check disk permissions. There were a lot of repairs concerning permissions and groups, especially on "Library". It said "ACL differs on Library", I don't know what this is but this was repaired. I then ran Repair Disk. The volume appeared to be OK.
When I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Server however, this failed with the message
"You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed. Mac OS X Server couldn't be installed on this disk." I don't know how this can be, but I may have run software update earlier today.
What should I try next? Should I erase the primary HD and try to install again? Or should I install the system software on the secondary HD? Or should I just try to reboot as is in the hope that the disk permission repairs did the trick...?
Any helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there, I came across your post when browsing the forum for passive advice. I am in the same boat as you and am a first timer for both of these tools. I work for a company who now needs to expand its network and database capabilities. I have been assigned this task and these are the tools i have opted for. I have not yet purchased them and i am pleased to find someone who has my desired setup. Could you please advise on the simplicity of the setup and whether an advanced knowledge is required.
I want to use it in a mixed operating system environment. Is this possible?

  • I installed 10.4.8 and now classic won't boot.

I installed the 10.4.8 update on my G5 at work and classic won't boot up now. I use one and only one app in the classic mode (because the IT dept won't update the server software) so now I am lost without my email. It freezes right before it gets to the end of the boot process. It is very frustrating!
Any and all advice would be grately appreciated.
G5, Power book & Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)
G5, Power book & Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try these in this order (it has been so long, I can't remmeber the exact places things are located):
    1. There is a way to start with extensions off. Do that. If it works, the problem is in Classic. Reinstall it.
    2. Remove the 3 things that are installed in the Cloassic System Folder (all have the name Classic in them), that are installed when you first launch Classic. Launch Classic again, and it will ask to reinstall them.

  • Computer restarted and now iPod won't work, please help!

I've been using my iPod shuffle since September, and there have been no problems, I updated it with the newest software and everything. Then today, I was changing the songs on it, and right in the middle of updating, my computer shut off and restarted. Now my iPod will not work, and iTunes won't restore it (it keeps saying an unknown error occurred (1415)). How can I get my iPod to start working again?

Follow the instructions in this article if you haven't already done so.

  • Our business pc had an Adobe Air update. Now pc won't boot up any windows processes.

The Adobe Air update popped up and my biz partner accepted it without reading it. Now the pc won't boot up. He cannot even get to the point of removing the update or restoring the pc. Was this some type of malware or an error that Adobe can correct? HOW do I get it off?

It could be malware: there are LOT of fake updates going around at the moment.
What does the PC do - where does it get to in the boot, what happens next?

  • [SOLVED] Switch to systemd - Now system won't boot

I saw that todays update upgrade included the installation of systemd. I looked the wiki and did the necessary changes (I already had made the /etc/hostname etc. files). So I added the
    init=/bin/systemd
line to grub and now my system won't boot. I get an error saying something about syslog service not enabled and then a black screen. I can boot my machine fine without the "init=/bin/systemd" line but I want to run a pure systemd system since Arch is moving to it anyway. In the wiki it mentions to install systemd-sysvcompat but it conflicts with initscripts it says. What am I doing wrong or missing?

Is LVM handled automatically by systemd? The reason I ask is because I have the USELVM= set to YES in rc.conf.
I made the permanent transition to systemd and did not start alsa at all - sound works fine - so I never bothered with the alsa-store/alsa-restore service files at all - it just works! Also dbus gets handled by default in systemd so you don't need any starting of dbus service at all... it just works.

  • MacBook was shut down improperly now it won't boot up, until the battery is fully drained

    macbook pro 17 late 2009
last week my Mac shut down because it ran out of battery,so I plugged in charged it, next morning it wouldn't boot. No sounds coming from it at all, not even attempting to boot. I let it sit unplugged, battery drained in about 1 1/2 days, plugged it in, got a little charge, and it rebooted just fine. This morning my son thought it was turned off, hit the power button, and it shut down.... now it won't reboot. Again no sounds coming from it at all. I don't have a day and a half to let it drain out again. Any help is appreciated !

  • New Mobo- Now OS won't boot

    Help!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here are my specs that i have now:
    865PE NEO2-FIS2R
    FX5600-VTD256
    WD800 (w/ 8mb cache)
    Intel 2.6 (Northwood)
300 Watt PSU (i don't know what info is relevant)
    Ram 256 (333) i think - I don't know how to check the specs
    WinXP Pro (upgraded from 98SE)
    Problem:
I had all MSI components before.  I brought over the HDD that had XP Pro on it.  First time up it just boot up to the Safe Mode screen.  2 Beeps then a reboot to the Safe Mode again, and it keeps doing this.  Note: the new mobo didn't do the regular system inventory, proc speed, ram etc.  But the BIOS found everything.
Tried a boot disk, it then said that the OS had problems and couldn't boot.
I am a little fuzzy on the BIOS, so if you can help me out.  I am not messing with RAID or SATA.  Are there any specifics I should know.  I did set ram voltage to 2.7.
I tested the Western Dig HDD and with their diag and it came out perfect.  I tried to repair XP but it fails everytime.  Here is the error that it gives.  C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\I386\asms  "One of the components Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed."
I was beginning to think it was Gates' fault (imagine that).  But then i dropped in a Win2K HDD that i had tested on another system at work.  And the new HDD won't boot up either.  It tries to boot up, the Win2K screen flashes and then straight to a Blue Screen.    It says "Inaccessible_BOOT_Device"
Help Please!!!  Let me know what other info might be helpful.
    [email protected]

Well, i did finally get it to take the OS.  But it would not boot to the HDD.  When you first start up the pc it sets on autodetect of the primary for over 30 seconds and never finds it.  You could manual boot to the HDD by a F11.  I finally figured out how to flash the bios, so now i am up to date on that.
Now it will boot to the hdd, but it takes over 2 minutes and a lot of just black screen.  Is there a setting I am missing in the BIOS?
I am not running any sata or raid configs.  Could someone give me the basic setup for this, especially where the ide config is concerned.  Or why it is taking so long to boot up.  I know it isn't normal for my 1.6 never took that long.
Thanks for all of your help.
    Matt
