Restarting and reseting a device.
What is the difference between restarting and reseting device? What benefits do they offer when It comes to troubleshooting a certain issue?
Restart is 'turning off the phone with the Sleep/Wake button'.
Reset is 'forcing the phone to turn off, then on again with a combination of the Home button & the Sleep/Wake button'
Basic Troubleshooting Steps
Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, holding down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.
Relaunch the App and try again.
Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
Test the issue after each step. If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

From pages on a mbp running 10.9.1, pages 5.0.1 does not sync automatically to iCloud after a doc is created and saved. I have rebooted and reset all devices.
Welcome to the Apple Community.
What exactly do you mean by 'it doesn't save'.
Does this mean it doesn't save at all, doesn't save to the iCloud folder or doesn't sync with other the devices or iCloud.com. -
Hi I have a question, I am operating my iPhone 4S on 6.1.1iOS, as my power button is not working, I have jailbreoked my device so that I have a option to restart and shutdown my device. If i upgrade to iOS 7 do i have such option?
Jailbreaking your iPhone forfeits your ability to receive any support on that phone, including from this forum.
You'll have to search elsewhere for answers to your issue. -
Woke up to my iPhone 4 being completely blank. I've tried restarting and resetting it as well as charging it and plugging into my computer. Can anyone shed some light as to what may be wrong or how to fix it? Thanks
Hello there, Kyle.Kuz.

Specifically:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

Ipad2 video player doesnt work, already tried restarting and resetting
When I go to my standard video app in my ipad, it comes out black and nothing happens. I have already restarted and reset. Software up to date. I cannot plug into my computer right now.
See if the video app will start this way.
Go to your first home screen and swipe to the right to bring up the search feature. Type in the name of one of your movies or TV shows. When it appears in the search - tap on it - and it should start playing. Let it play for a minute or two and then hit Done. Now go the videos app and see if it works.
If you need a video to try this with - download a free video podcast and use that for the "test" movie. -

Particularly:
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.

My niece "spammed" my phone with a bunch of the smiling poop emojis to shut down my messages.
She said all I had to do was restart and reset my phone settings and everything would go back to normal. Well, it didn't.
I've tried 4 times and it's still not working. Any ideas? This is apparently a very funny prank....

speaker on phone calls will not work, how can I fix this? I have already done system restart and reset to manufature default. I also have no voice with Safari or any other apps including music!
If your speaker is broken, then you may need to get a repair done.
Are you unable to hear anything at all, or is it just one speaker in particular?
If it is just one speaker, where's it located? -
I've done all of the above but I'm still displaying the message: to access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on home sharing in iTunes on your computer using ....... My home sharing is on ???? Confused, I've restarted and reset Apple TV with no change
You mention doing all of the above, what would that be exactly?
The article linked above is for airplay, have you checked home sharing tips?

We have 2 iPad 2's. For one of them it must be very close to the router to pick up a wifi signal. We have restarted and reset it without success. Using 7.1.1.
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

I've had my iPod touch 5th gen for a little over 2 years now. a few weeks ago, I went to plug my iPod into the charger. After about 20 minutes I went to go get it so I could reply to texts and clear some notifications and I noticed that it was still at 20%. So I tried a different cord, different outlet, cleaned out any lint that might be in there, and reset the iPod more than once. Nothing worked. Eventually the problem corrected itself. But then it happened again a few days later. And then it happened just recently, and now it's happening again. In total it's happened 4 times, the first 3 times its corrected itself, but this time it's not. I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do, or if it's just a lost cause.

IPhone 5 Springboard restarts and resets
For the last two weeks I have been experiencing major "springboard" reboots and resets randomly on my iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1.2. My experiences:
- phone restarts springboard 3 times in the time of a 10 minute phone call. Doesn't drop call. I just go dark on the line and then come back when the lock screen reappears.
- phone restarts randomly every 2-3 minutes while sitting idle but plugged into the apple provided charger and cable.
- phone restarts randomly during typing of text or email. Typed text is gone after springboard restarts. Always gone after reset, as one would expect.
What I have done...
On my own....
Hard reset of phone.
Restore from scratch and setup as a brand new iPhone reloading everything from the App Store and setting up mail accounts from settings.
Genius Bar...
Genius Bar trip 1 included an hour wait to be told to restore from scratch again. This included a firmware update by the "Genius" before I was sent on my way. Left with my iPhone being as if I had just unboxed it. I restored from scratch again. Not from a backup. Long process and frustrating.
Problem started back up almost immediately. Walked back into Genius Bar. Was told to let all the mail and contacts get downloaded returning the phone back to a normal use state and if the problem happens again, come back. Well..... It did.
Genius Bar trip 2. They replaced the iPhone with a brand new phone. I restored from scratch again.... Not from backup. It seemed ok for a bit then the problem started again. I had all the rash logs on my phone vs. sending automagically to Apple. Left on business trip.
Arrived in Houston on trip and immediately went to Genius Bar. Phone restarted or reset 4 times during the appt. showed Genius the crash logs. He replaced the phone again. That was Monday night. It seemed ok only restating a few times on Tuesday. Wednesday set new records for restarts.
I have no idea what to do. I can't take calls on the phone reliably at this point. Not to mention use the "Smart" phone features the phone garnered its market share from. I love Apple. I have all their stuff, but this is getting to be unacceptable. I need help. Badly.Hi BigDave,
Did you ever find a solution to this issue, or did it go away?
I upgraded to the iPhone 5s from 4s and am running the latest OS. I have the springboard reboot randomly in the same way you describe. This also extends to my iPad Air. It seems most commonly resetting during heavy or just use ie switching between apps while on a call or FT Call, listening it music etc.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks, Gary -
