Restarting Services on the RemoteApp Session Host

Can anyone advise me how I might restart a windows service on my RemoteApp Session Host. I have a LOB application that I need to restart services from time to time and wondered if there is a PowerShell way of doing it.

Hi,
First you need to use an account that has permission to restart the service(s) and then you may restart them using the usual techniques such as services.msc, net start/stop, etc.  For a Hybrid collection you can restart remotely as well using same methods,
including PowerShell, assuming you have configured the VM template (or via GPO) to allow it.

    Hi, there
I'm not really pro- at RDS in server 2012 (r1), but I have a problem and don't find anything suitable on internet:
I'm trying to publish one of my own, unlisted programs to rdweb, but it keeps saying "You must specify a file from the RD Session Host server SERVERNAME by using the UNC path...."
    1) I provided the path in the unc name - when I click "Add.." then i browse the the .exe file via network share, not via local path. So that should be OK
    2) Firewall is turned off and eventhough the exeptions are enabled, both of then, checked
What else should I do to make this work?

    Okej, I found the sollution:
You have to specify the path like \\hostname\drive_letter$\path-to-the-program.
I was doing wrong because i wrote it like \\hostname\ShareName\path-to-the-program.
I was misleded because the wizard wants me to find the program by clicking, and not by entring the path manualy.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Does the RD server joined to domain or in workgroup mode?
Are you trying to use RemoteApp?
What’s your client OS and RDP version used?
From your description there is issue with the installation and configuration of RD server. You can check the configuration part and follow the below link for rechecking all the steps. In addition to the steps you have performed, please see whether the user
is member of “Remote desktop Users” local group.  Try with enterprise version on client system.

  • Changing RemoteApp Session Host connection name in 2012

I am looking for a way to change the server name you connect to (on the Session Host), like you could in 2008 R2. Pictures a worth a thousand words, so I've attached a picture of exactly what I am looking for:
The servers are setup so their names are servername.domain.local, but since they will be facing outwards (with a RD Gateway between them, of course) and non-domain members will be accessing them, we need a way to change the "server name" to servername.domain.com
(.dk actually, but you get the point), so the certificate applies to it.
    Currently, connecting looks like this:
We don't want our customers getting this dialog box. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
The architecture is changed. We don't use the DNS RR or NLB to redirect the initial connection any more.We just need the RDCB database to redirect the connection. The process is simplified. In short, there is no need to change the server name like the above. All
the changeable settings are on the RDCB.To get dialog box disappeared, you need to change the cert name to match the destination computer.

  • The grace period for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has expired

<p>I'm running Windows Server 2012, we only have 1 server and it's a DC.  I'm trying to RD to the server from my Windows 7 laptop. It was working fine on Friday but when I came in on Monday I got message saying that 'The remote session was disconnnected
because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license'
So after a bit of digging I found out my 'grace period' had expired, so ordered a new license which I got today, installed this all ok but still i cannot connect via RD I get the same message....went into the RD License Diagnoser and it said the problem
    was as follows
'The grace period for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has expired, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license servers. Connections to the RD Session Host server will be denied unless a license server is configured for
    the RD Session Host server.'
    Suggested Resolution as follows
Configure a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server. If you have an existing license server, specify that license server for the RD Session Host Server. Otherwise, install RD Licensing on a computer on your network and Configure RD Session
    Host Server to use it.'
I cannot figure out how to do this as I cannot find the RD Session Host Server tool.
Can any of you lovely people help me please

    Hello,
Best option would be to assign the license server by using AD GPO. Youl will need to configure the following:
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
    and define the settings for:
Use the specified Remote Desktop License Server
Set the Remote Desktop Licensing mode
Then assign the policy tho your server.
    regards Robert Maijen

  • RD session host is not detecting the license

My RD session hosts are not able to recognize the RDS CALs. Here is my setup:
    License Server :
Windows 2012 Server (workgroup), running on Amazon cloud
    No. of license: 20
    License activation is done.
    RD session host server:
Windows 2008 R2 (workgroup), running on Amazon cloud
Can connect to license server on port 135
License server is added in the RD session host
Licensing Diagnosis under RD session host detects the License server fine and give positive report. (Screenshot attached)
    Few other settings:
    These are user based CALs.
Firewall is disabled on the license server
As this is in workgroup, the Administrator's password on license server and on RD session host server is same. (else the license diagnosis will fail).
    ISSUE:
Even though RD session host is detecting the license server fine as well as the licensing diagnosis gives a positive report, I get the typical balloon pop up saying "RDP connection will be lost after 119 days... " (the typical message it shows
when you do not have RD session host license.)
What Am I missing here. Any pointers would of great help.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
You need to contact MS Clearinghouse with you all license related documents and numbers with all paper in hand and explain them the scenario they will help you. Below links helps to locate the MS clearing house.

This statement “RDS Host and RDS licensing server roles can both be installed on the same server” indicates that you can install RDSH and RDLS on same server. In addition, RDS server 2012 required RD Licensing Server 2012. But
yes, you can install server 2012 RD Licensing Server and associate your RDS CAL’s on it and let’s your RD Session Host server works on server 2008 R2.
    Hope it helps!

  • Windows Server 2012 The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured

    Hi
I have a standard Windows Server 2012 that is hosted in the cloud by a hosting provider -
This server has been up and running fir 6 months - recently we have been getting a warning
"The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured" - The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.
Yet, we only use this with 2 connections as part of the standard licence agreement and this server is not used as a user's desktop only an ftp and web server- do therefore we do not need to purchase any cal licences (we have another server with the same
hosting company that does not have this issue and has been up for 18months)
Please can someone advise how I resolve this issue, the hosting company states that I must resolve it as they only host and resell the server licence
    Thank-you
    Richard Steele

    Hi Richard,
You need to uninstall Remote desktop session host feature. After removing it, you will default two connections which does not need to purchase RD CALs'.

  • The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period Question

On my Windows 2012 Server, when I open the RD Licensing Diagnoser, I see this:
The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.
Configure a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server. If you have an existing license server, specify that license server for the RD Session Host server. Otherwise, install RD Licensing on a computer on your network and Configure RD Session
    Host server to use it.
I have a few questions.  First, I have 10 virtual machines setup (all Windows 7 Enterprise).  I have my 10 VDI licenses for those machines.  Do I need another license for my Remote Desktop Session Host?  If not, how do I license my RD Session
Host Server?  If so, does anyone know how much they cost?  I have no licensing server.  I just have my Windows 2008 server that is my AD and DNS Server (where my GPO's sit too) and my Windows 2012 server that is dedicated to only running VM's
    for the remote users.

you should probably speak to a licensing expert as it can start getting fairly complicated and we wouldn't want to advise you incorrectly. Generally if you speak to a LAR (Large Account Reseller) they should be able to provide the guidance you need.

  • Certificate Mismatch RDS Session Host

I've been banging my head against this for the last few days. I have a server 2012 remote desktop setup as follows:
    1 Gateway Server
    1 RD Web Access Serve
1 Session Broker, which is also a session host
    1 Additional Session host
I'm using remote app to publish applications rather than desktops. I've got a wildcard certificate for the external domain, which works fine for the gateway and web access server, the problem comes with the session hosts, which are giving me a certificate mismatch
error because connections are made to the internal name (which is a .local address) which obviously does not match the external certificate.
I have a DNS zone for the external name setup on this domain, so that machines can be resolved by internal or external names.
I've made some progress by following the steps here - http://serverfault.com/questions/524092/rds-rdweb-and-remoteapp-how-to-use-public-certificate-for-launching-apps-on-s, and things now work fine if I only have the session host that is also the broker
enabled. Once I add the second session host, any requests that go to that get the certificate error. Connections to the first session host still work fine.
Does anyone know a way to have requests be made to the external name of the session host?

    Hi,
    1. After making the DNS change, did you flush the DNS cache on the RD Gateway server?  Or even better restart the whole server?
    2. Do you have DNS round robin for any of the other servers in your deployment?  You should
not.  Additionally, do you have any NLB or other hardware/software load balancing solution in place?
    3. To make sure I have the facts correct, please let me know if the following items are correct:
    a. You are launching a RemoteApp from within RD Web Access using IE running on a Windows 8 PC
    b. When you launch a RemoteApp, the prompt has the following on it (for Calculator in this example):
    Publisher: *.domain.com
    Type: RemoteApp program
    Path: calc
    Name: Calculator
    Remote computer: rdbroker.domain.com
    Gateway server: gateway.domain.com
    c. After clicking Connect it goes through several status messages and then you get a Certificate error saying essentially:
    Name mismatch
         Requested remote computer:
         rd02.domain.local
Name in the certificate from the remote computer:
         *.domain.com
    Certificate errors
The following errors were encountered while validating the remote
      computer's certificate:
The server name on the certificate is incorrect.
    d. In Deployment Properties, RD Gateway tab, Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses is
    unchecked.
    4. Do you have multiple configured network cards in each server, or just a single NIC that has an ip address?
    5. Have you modified the default firewall configuration of your servers?  In other words, can I assume they are on the same subnet and are able to communicate with each other in the default domain configuration, or have changes been made and/or is
there a third-party firewall software or device in place that could be affecting things?  I ask because normally the broker will authenticate the destination server using Kerberos and if something interferes with this you can get unexpected errors.
I believe you are close to solving this now.
    Thanks.

  • RDS 2012 External access for Session Hosts over different port to default 443

    Hello there
I am having problems solving this problem as you may see on other posts, so I am going to try again.
I have two Server 2012 machines for RDS. Server 1 one with all roles (Gateway, Broker, Session host etc.) and second machine, Server 2 as a session host only. I am running RDWeb Apps, with CA certificate installed and
    everything works fine internally.
Due to limitations on the router I had to change the default SSL port on the gateway (Server 1) to 4043. I have this and 3391 for UDP open to Server 1 from the router.
Working externally, I can login to the RDS site and open apps form Server 1, but when I try to open an app installed on Server 2, I get a certificate error.  The error is:
“Your computer can’t connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address
and the certificate subject name do not match. Contact your network administrator for assistance".
The certificate address the error points to is referring to is an SBS 2011 cert for RWW and email. Experimenting, if I use 443 on the Server 1
gateway instead of 4043 and change the router accordingly, it then works. I can open apps form both session hosts externally . But not if is set to 4043.
For the record Server 2 session host also gives this error:
Event ID: 1280 Warning Microsoft Windows TerminalServcies-session broker client
Remote Desktop Services failed to join the Connection Broker on server sever-vm1.local.
Error: Current async message was dropped by async dispatcher, because there is a new message which will override the current one.
Because everything works fine using default 443, I figure this is a communication or firewall issue between the gateway and the session host on Server 2.
    Can anyone help here?
    Many Thanks
    MIS5000

    Hi,
    Thanks for your comment.
Have you check the connection on your second server?
Can you ping the server 2 from server 1?
As from the event ID 1280 it seems there is some network connectivity to RDCB server. Also please “Add the RD Session Host server to the Session Broker Computers group” & RDWeb server's computer account needs to be a member of the local TS Web Access Computers
group on your RDSH server.  You can get the detailed information from this article.
In addition, do you have certificate purchased and install from trusted root authority. There is some requirement to use certificate for RDS environment, please consider following points.
    1. The certificate is installed into computer’s “Personal” certificate store.
    2. The certificate has a corresponding private key.
    3. The "Enhanced Key Usage" extension has a value of either "Server Authentication" or "Remote Desktop Authentication" (1.3.6.1.4.1.311.54.1.2). Certificates with no "Enhanced Key Usage" extension can be used as well.
You can get more details regarding certificatehere.

  • Event ID: 1280 Server 2012 RDS - web app fail on second session host

    Hello there
    Topography
    SBS 2011 (domain controller)
    Two VM’s:
VM1 – All RDS rolls: RD Gateway , Connection broker, Licensing and RD access installed and acting as a session host with an active collection for RD web apps. A CA trusted certificate is installed.
VM2 – Session host with a second collection for RD web apps
    Problem
I have a single app installed on both session hosts (the apps require their own servers). Both appear on the RDWeb site available for use.  I can run the app hosted on VM1 no problem, but when I try to open the second app hosted on VM2 I get
    two issues:
    An error is returned
“Your computer can’t connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address and the certificate subject name do not match. Contact your network administrator for assistance".
When viewing the certificate, it actually shows the CA cert installed on the
SBS server for RWW, not the cert on VM1. This has me puzzled
Secondly on VM 2, I get
Event ID: 1280 Warning Microsoft Windows TerminalServcies-session broker client
Remote Desktop Services failed to join the Connection Broker on server sever-vm1.local.
Error: Current async message was dropped by async dispatcher, because there is a new message which will override the current one.
When I run the app internally it seems to load but then disappears.
Some further config info if it is relevant:
I have port 4043 (443 used) as the only port directed to the gateway
Am I missing something simple? DNS? Port forwarding issue on the router?  Its my first deployment of this nature with RDS 2012

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Firstly please check the RDP version you are using. I suggest you to update to RDP 8.1 for better feature and functionality. Now other thing verify that you have the RD Gateway certificate name matches the external FQDN of the RD Gateway Server. Also please
check that certificate is added under local computer\personal store and must be signed by trusted root authority.
Please check below article for more detail.

In regards to resolve other issue (Event ID 1280), identify and fix any connectivity problems between the RD Session Host server and the RD Connection Broker by doing the following:
    • Check network connectivity to the RD Connection Broker.
    • Start the Remote Desktop Connection Broker service.
    • Add the RD Session Host server to the Session Broker Computers group.

  • Restart services on linux system

    Hi guys
i need to work in online mode using my local administrator tool of BIEE like Using the Administrator tool that is installed on the testing calculator under linux system.
I have already created, under my local system windows, the dsn system for the BI server using the IP address of the testing calculator in wich is installed the oracle BI that i want to use; under linux system.
After I try to open Online project using the DSN System previously created and all is ok! I'm able to see the samplesales default project.
After i created, on my local administrator tool, an .rpd (also setting security--> user--> setting a password) project and after i put this under the OracleBI/server/repository directory of the testing calculator.
Now i think that if i try to connect, using my local administrator tool, to administrator tool of the testing calculator i can see my .rpd but it not work. I'm not able to see this project.
Maybe i need to restart services under the testing calculator(linux system)?
If the answer is yes, how i can do this under linux system??
I have the IP address, user and password to logon in this system but i don't know the name of the services that i have to stop and restart in linux system.
The services that i have to stop and restart are:
    -BI server
    -Presentation server
    - java host
    -oc4j
What are the name of these services  and under which directory are them, in a linux system?
I attempt to make a workaround to reach my goal but don't work!
    I did the follow steps:
    1) MAde a backup copy of the samplesales.rpd that i already found, like a default, under OracleBI/server/repository directory of the testing calculator
    2) i opened the real (not a backup) samplesales.rpd on my local administrator tool, using online mode
3)deleted all, physical - business and presentation layer
    4) save
    5) try to reconnect
    6) receive the errors "Repository star has not catalog" and another that i don't remember with code "37001"
    7) panic :-()
    8) replace the empty samplesales whit the backup copy in order to restore the initial situation
9)try to reconnect on the adminiustration tool, using online mode
    10) receive the errors "Repository star has not catalog" and another that i don't remember with code "37001"
    11) panic and desperation :-()
Furthermore,i could also access to web application, in the answer, to see the samplsales subject and try to do a report or some segmentation but now i cannot to logon on the web application because i receive the same error *"Repository star has not catalog" and another that i don't remember with code "37001"*
What i can do to restore the initial situation in the testing environment?
    Thanks in advance
    Best reguards

    Hi,
To start and stop all the services
    Oracle BI Server
    ./OracleBI/setup/run-sa.sh start
    ./OracleBI/setup/run-sa.sh stop
Oracle BI Presentation Server and Javahost
    ./OracleBI/setup/run-saw.sh start
    ./OracleBI/setup/run-saw.sh stop
    OC4J
    ./OracleBI/oc4j_bi/bin/oc4j -start
    ./OracleBI/oc4j_bi/bin/oc4j –shutdown –port 23791 –password
If you want to use the original files, first shut down all the services.
Take the original webcat and the .rpd file on your test calaculator. Check you instanceconfig.xml and your nqsconfig.ini on the test calculator. They should both point to the samplesales.
    For more information check:
    NQSConfig.ini and instanceconfig.xml
If you are sure everything is back to the original, start the services again en check the result.

  • RD Session Host lock down best practice document

    Hello,
I am currently working on deploying an RDS Farm. My farm has several RD Session host servers. Today I learned that you can do some bad things to the RD Session hosts, if a user presses
CTRL + Alt + End when having a open session. I locked all of this down using different GPOs which include disabled access task manager, cmd, locking the server, reboot and shutdown etc.
However, this being sad how would I know what else to lock down since I am new to this topic. I tried to find some Microsoft document about best practices what should be locked down but I wasn’t
successful and unfortunately a search in the forum did not bring up anything else.
With all the different features and option Windows Server 2008 R2 has I do not even know where to start.
Can some please point me into the right direction.

  • Windows 2012 Remote desktop session host server not detecting RD licensing server

    Hi,
We have a customer server which is Windows 2012. We installed RDS session host server role and configured it to use RD licensing server as per the
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839?wa=wsignin1.0
After configuring, when I open RD license diagonser tool, it says, RD license server is not available. Also shows, credential not available. When I enter the credential by clicking, provide credentials, it does not get applied. I see no event logs related
to RD service. However, I see the below event log which points to RD licensing server.
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer <RD license server> using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID     273c (C:\Windows\system32\mmc.exe).
Please help in fixing the issue.
    Thanks,
    Umesh

    Hi Umesh,
    Thanks for your comment.
During your configuration, have you specified RD License server for RDSH to use?
You can also specify a license server for the RD Session Host server to use by applying the Group Policy under below path.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers – Provide the FQDN of the license servers to use
Also this setting can be specified by below method.
To configure the license server on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = gwmi -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("License.contoso.com")
Note “License” is the name of the License Server in the environment
To verify the license server configuration on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = gwmi -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.GetSpecifiedLicenseServerList()

  • Setup email profile at Remote Desktop Session Host Server

    Hi All,
We have setup a RemoteApp environment hosted in Server 2012 R2.  We are trying to create outlook profile for remote users during logon.  Our approach is to create customised outlook profile (.prf), and assign it via logon script.  However,
as the logon scripts are park under AD server (where Outlook is installed under Remote Desktop Session Host server), the script could not find the Outlook.exe, which is obvious as the Outlook wasn't installed on the same server.
Can someone advise what we should do to create the outlook profile when users remote logon?  You are also welcome to suggest if you find other better approach.  Thank you.
    Best regards,

    Hi Lih,
Thank you for your post in Windows Server Forum.
I would recommend just publishing Outlook as a RemoteApp to the RDS Session Host/RemoteApp Server. Once the User configures there email in Outlook, this should register in the User's profile. This should allow the User to send emails through this connector.
    (Quoted from this thread).

Apart from that suggest you to upgrade the version of RDP client to RDP 8.1 for better feature and functionality.
    Hope it helps!

Why do Adobe have a policy of publishing an MSI for major Reader releases but only MSP's for revisions? If Adobe simply published an MSI for every revision (e.g. 11.0.09) it would avoid customers having to slipstream MSPs into MSIs which is a real pa
