Restoration cd for ibook G4 Aug 2005

I have an ibook G4 12.1/1.33 August 2005 buy. Its stuck at grey page with the circular apple sign going on and on. I am also confused what OS version its running on. Have misplaced the restore cd. Can I get one? Lot of important data in the machine. I now have a MacBookPro

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You can try calling Apple to see if they have the software discs available for the iBook. Be ready with the serial number when they ask for it. If they have them, they will send them to you (for a fee).
Check out the Apple Knowledge Base article on How to find the Serial Number if you are unable to get to the System Profiler to find it there.
Meanwhile, have you tried starting up in Safe Mode? If not, I suggest that you give it a try. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You can't. You will have to buy them.
Which exact iBook model is it? Perhaps we could help you find them if we knew which iBook it is.

  • New internal Hard Drive for my Ibook G4 (March 2005); Panther 10.3.9

    Hi there,
hope I'm not posting a post which is already answered, but couldn't find any appriopriate one.
The thing is I want to buy a bigger HDD for my lovely Ibook. Questions:
    1) I looked in "about this MAC" and found out, that it should be an ATA drive. Is that correct? Or can I use some other drives types as well? Can I use Ultra ATA to speed up the whole ship?
    2) At what else, when buying, should I pay attention?
    3) Is it advisable to buy a used hard drive, or would you strongly disadvise?
    4) Any brands, types you would suggest (I'm thinking about some nice 60-80gbs)?
    5) After buying, is it possible to make a 1:1 copy from the old one to the new one, so that I don't have to install everything again from the beginning?
    6) New ibooks are shipped with this Sudden Motion Sensor, which helps protecting the HDD. Is it possible, to have this one too?
Thanks for all the help and response,
and sorry if there is a post with the same matter already

    iBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   768 RAM, 30GB

    Hi iMaster,
1 - Apple uses Ultra ATA hard drives.
2 - RPM (Revolution Per Minute) I use a 5400RPM in my internal and a 7200RPM for my external. The 7200RPM hard drive I believe run hotter then the 5400RPM. You will need a hard drive that is 2.5" wide X 9.5mm tall. I believe IDE and ATA interfaces are the same.
3 - I wouldn't buy a used hard drive because it may not last as long as a new one. Using a hard drive usually eats away at the life span.
4 - Toshiba, Hitachi, Seagate, or IBM. You may want to look at iFixit.com for iBook compatible hard drives.
5 - Yes, you will need to backup your iBook (on to an external drive, whether a external hard drive, iPod, computer, etc. I suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner. You may want to look at Macworld: Take Control of Mac OS X Backups and Knowledge Base Document #106941 which has examples on How to back up and restore your files.
6 - AMS (Apple Motion Sensor, Mobile Motion Module, or Sudden Motion Sensor) is an sensor that is integrated into the logic board. It is not a hard drive feature.
To be honest with you, I don't really recommend upgrading your internal hard drive. Do you still have an outstanding warranty on your iBook? You do realize that replacing the hard drive will void Apple's One (1) Year Limited Warranty, unless they are an AASP. If you would like hear more, let us know.

  • Database restore from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 for SBO 2005B

    Hi Everyone,
I am facing some problems in regards to the restore of SBO Database from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.
Let me explain you the problem.
See I am using SAP B1 2005B with patch level 38 in my laptop with SQL 2000. I have made an company in this and done work in it as a production company and now I want to restore this company in the server which has SQL 2005. How to do it.
I have taken a backup in my laptop from SAP B1 Server Suite Manager which has SQL 2000 and sucessfully backed up but when I am trying to restore in the server which has SQL 2005 I am getting the following error in SQL 2005 in server :-
Restore failed for Server 'DXBAP001'.  (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Directory lookup for the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\SBO_DCHAR.mdf" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Please let me know the solution for it.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Kawish Junaid Mazhari

    Hi,
In SQL 2005 create a database and name as the 200 one was (though any name would do).  when you create the database note the location of the .mdb and .ldf file.
once this had created right click on your new database > tasks > restore database
in the new window select from device and point it to your .bak file created from your 2000 system, ensure you put a tick in the restore box on the new line.
in the options tab tick overwrite database, and, change the file locations in the restore as directory to the file locations of the new database.  the file names must be the same too.
you can change the original file names after the restore.
    that should do the trick.
    thanks,
    mike

  • IBook G4 (Mid 2005) - AirPort 'disappeared' - Help!

    Hello.
    I'm an owner of an iBook G4 (Mid 2005) @ 1.33GHz.
It's been working perfectly since it has been bought. Till yesterday...
It came with Tiger, but some time ago I ordered Leopard. Everything was still working fine. But few days ago I decided to update OS to 10.5.2. After that it was still OK.
I use XAMPP (Apache Distribution with MySQL and other stuff). It set up permissions for 'nobody' on /Applications/xampp where I keep my site's files. Every time I wanted to save a file there (using BBEdit) I had to authenticate.
Yesterday, I got back to work on my site and when I tried to save a file and authenticated - whole system just freezed. But before, Software Update showed up and said that the Leopard Graphics update is ready to be installed, but I didn't want to update that time so I closed it.
I think that might be caused by some permissions' violation between some applications using that directory (I had few web browsers open, and my server was accessible via AirPort at all). I hard-reset my iBook.
When Mac OS got loaded - I noticed that my AirPort Extreme card is no longer recognized.
    http://www.wroclaw.mm.pl/~kaziorvb/no_airport.png
    http://www.wroclaw.mm.pl/~kaziorvb/no_airport2.png
That was really weird.. It just disappeared..
First, I tried resetting PMU. No result. Also reset PRAM. Then safe-booted.
Amazingly - AirPort was back! So I decided to reboot and just get back to work, but it disappeared once again. Tried resetting PMU and PRAM again and again, but with no results... I shut it down and opened it.
It's the last revision, so the AirPort card is not normally accessible.
Closed it, and booted once again. Still no AirPort...
I installed that update mentioned before by downloading it manually from Apple Downloads. It didn't change anything.
As I borrowed my Leopard Install DVD to my friend who's got a new iMac and lost his own, I performed a Hardware Test using my old Tiger (10.4.2) Installation DVD.
    It didn't find any problems:
    Test Results
    AirPort - Passed
    Logic Board - Passed
    Mass Storage - Passed
    Memory - Passed
Modem - Device found (What about this one? Is it normal?)
    Video RAM - Passed
    and in the Hardware Profile:
    Communication
    Ethernet HW address: xxx
    AirPort card: AirPort Extreme
    Bluetooth: Present
    FireWire devices: Not present
It all just appeared to be OK, and my issues were only software-related.
I thought of performing a clean Mac OS X Tiger installation, so I started making backup.
Booted normally and again, the AirPort was back! Found my home network, typed in the password and successfully connected. After a while I got a kernel panic, so I had to restart the machine.
Again, AirPort was on. This time I managed to connect to the internet. Did all the backup, but then I got another kernel panic. I reset the PMU, what resulted losing AirPort again.
I thought that system reinstallation will fix all my problems, but I was wrong. Freshly installed Tiger couldn't see the AirPort card. Same after update to 10.4.11. I did all the PMU, PRAM, safe-booting tricks, but never resulting.
I also tried typing 'reset-nvram','set-defaults' and 'reset-all' in the Open Firmware console or typing 'sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/' in the Terminal. Still no results.
What should I do ? I really don't want to pay boatloads to get it repaired..
    Help
    kaziorvb

    Thanks for your response.
Anyway, I fixed it manually using Warren's tutorial @ Applintosh.
    Thank you, Warren!

  • Other ways to authenticate for iBooks account withouten creditcard?

I Was writing a mini ebook for iBooks. I spended very much time in it, but when i clicked publish, it promted me to make an ibooks account, and sayed it required a credit card. Are there other ways to authenticate? Or can i do requests/suggestions/feedback? Thank you for reading and hopefully answering. More details coming. Typed with my iPod touch 4.

I suggest that you start all over again, using Setup Assistant after restoring the new iMac to factory original conditions, & migrate only the user account(s) you want to keep on it from any older Macs you have.
There are several good reasons Setup/Migration Assistant will not do what you want:
    1. It is undesirable for privacy & security reasons -- there would be no point in having separate user accounts protected by passwords if someone could use the utility simply to copy whatever they wanted from another user's account into their own. As far as the computer is concerned, each user account is a separate entity, entitled to the same level of privacy & security.
    2. Each user account has its own user preferences, application settings, & so on. There can be several thousand of these items for each user account. There is no way to merge them into one user account, so at best an account merge function would tediously have to ask which of these you wanted retained & which ones you wanted discarded on an item by item basis.
    3. Many popular apps (among them Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, & many browsers) save user data in application-specific master files or databases rather than in individual files. Again, there can be only one of these (at a time) for each user. (For example, while iTunes stores song files individually, user ratings, notes, & other user-specific items are stored in iTunes database files, one per user.) Since each application that does this has its own unique methods & formats, Setup/Migration Assistant would have to know about all of them to somehow merge them into one user account's master or database files, assuming that would even be possible to do without conflicts.
The tips Pondini provided are the best you can do.

  • Questions for ibook g4

what are some downloads such as garageband, etc, that are available for ibook g4

These are the only iBook G4 specific downloads:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.kbase&fac=Downloa ds&q=iBook%20G4
Updates for iLife applications such as Garageband vary depending on if your Mac shipped with one specific version of iLife or another, and same with games and additional applications that ship on the restore CDs. To find out if a specific application has an update, search for it on http://www.apple.com/swupdates/ or run Software Update from the Apple menu.

  • Re: Max RAM for iBook G4

    hello,
I am trying to find out the answer to the same question i.e. how much RAM can I add, and what do I ask for when buying RAM. also, can I buy from 3rd party vendors? If yes, which vendor/model# to ask for? I think apple stores will only provide upgrades for current models and not the one I bought in 2005.
another q: what applications will adding ram enable me to use -that are not usable otherwise?
specs of my ibook are given below. I saw memory configuration, it says 512MB built in, and 1 DIMM slot empty.

  • Backpac: A package state snapshot and restore tool for Arch Linux

    backpac:
A package state snapshot and restore tool for Arch Linux with config file save/restore support.
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=52957
https://github.com/altercation/backpac (see readme on the github repository for more information)
    Summary & Features
It's a common method of setting up a single system: take some notes about what packages you've installed, what files you've modified.
Backpac creates those notes for you and helps back up important configuration files. Specifically, backpac does the following:
maintains a list of installed groups (based on 80% of group packages being installed)
maintains a list of packages (including official and aur packages, listed separately)
maintains a list of files (manually created)
backs up key config files as detailed in the files list you create
The package, group and files lists along with the snapshot config files allows system state to be easily committed to version control such as git.
Backpac can also use these lists to install packages and files. Essentially, then, backpac takes a snapshot of your system and can recreate that state from the files and lists it archives.
    Use Cases
Ongoing system state backup to github
Quick install of new system from existing backpac config
Conform current system to given state in backpac config
Backpac is a very, very lightweight way of saving and restoring system state.
It's not intended for rolling out and maintaining multiple similar systems, it's designed to assist individual users in the maintainance of their own Arch Linux box.
    Status
Alpha, release for testing among those interested. Passing all tests right now but will continue to rework and refine. Bug reports needed.
    Why?
There are a lot of 'big-iron' solutions to maintaining, backing up and restoring system state. Setting these up for a single system or a handful of personal systems has always seemed like overkill.
There are also some existing pacman list making utilities around, but most of them seem to list either all packages or don't separate the official and aur packages the way I wanted. Some detect group install state, some don't. I wanted all these features in backpac.
Finally, whatever tool I use, I'd like it to be simple (c.f. the Arch Way). Lists that are produced should be human readable, human maintainable and not different from what I'm using in non-automated form. Backpac fulfills these requirements.
Regarding files, I wanted to be able to backup arbitrary system files to a git repository. Tools like etckeeper are interesting but non /etc files in that case aren't backed up (without some link trickery) and there isn't any automatic integration with pacman, so there is no current advantage to using a tool like that. I also like making an explicit list of files to snapshot.
    Sample Output
This is the command line report. Additionally, backpac saves this information to the backpac groups, packages and files lists and the files snapshot directory.
    $ backpac -Qf
    backpac
(-b) Backups ON; Files will be saved in place with backup suffix.

firecat53 wrote:I think your plan for handling an AUR_HELPER is good. If AUR_HELPER is defined by the user, then either you might need a list of major AUR helpers and their command line switches so you can pick the correct switch for what needs to be done (most use some variation of -S for installing, but not all), or have the user define the correct switch(es) somehow for their chosen AUR helper.
That's a good idea. I'll add that to my AUR refactoring todo.
I also found directory tracking to be a weakness in other dotfile managers that I tried. I think you would definitely have to recursively list out the contents of a tracked directory and deal with each file individually. Wildcard support would be nice...I just haven't personally found a use case for it yet.
I've been thinking that I could just add the directory and scan through it for any non-default attribute files. If those are found then they get automatically added to the files list. That's pretty close to what etckeeper does.
Edit: I just compiled the dev version and removed my comments for already fixed things...sorry!
The master branch should have those fixes as well, but I didn't update the version number in the package build. I'll have to do that.
    1. Still apparently didn't handle the escaped space for this item: (the file does exist on my system)
Ok, good to know. This wildcard directory business will require some new code and refactoring so I'll also rework my filenames handling.
    2. Suggestion: you should make that awesome README into a man page!
I was working on one (the pkgbuild has a commented out line for the man page) but I had to leave it for later. Definitely want a man page. Once this stabilizes and I'm sure there aren't any big structural changes, I'll convert it to man format.
    3. Suggestion: add the word 'dotfile' into your description somewhere on this page, the github page, and in the package description so people looking for dotfile managers will find it. You could also consider modularizing the script into a dotfile manager and the package manager, so people on other distros could take advantage of your dotfile management scheme.
I actually have a different script for dotfile management that doesn't touch packages, but there is definitely overlap with this one. That script isn't released yet, though, and if people find this useful for dotfile management that's great. I'll add that in.
    4. Suggestion: since -Q is a read-only operation, why not just make it run with -f automatically to avoid the prompt?
Originally, running backpac without any command line options produced the Query output. I was concerned that since it is a utility that can potentially overwrite system files, it is important to give users a clear statement prior to execution about what will be done. Since the Query output is essentially the same as the Update and System reports in format and content, I wanted to be explicit about the Query being a passive no-change operation. The current command line options aren't set in stone though. If you feel strongly about it being different, let me know.
Long answer to a short question
    5. Another suggestion: any thought to providing some sort of 'scrub' function to remove private information from the stored files if desired? This would be cool for publishing public dotfiles to github. Perhaps a credentials file (I did this with python for my own configs). Probably detecting email addresses and passwords without a scrub file would be rather difficult because dotfiles come in so many flavors.
Yes, absolutely. In fact, if you look at the lib/local file (pretty sure it's in both master and dev branches in this state) you'll see some references to a sanitize function. The idea there is that the user will list out bash associative arrays like this:
    SANITIZE_WPA_=(
    [FILE]='/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf'
    [CMD]='sed s/expungepattern/sanitizedoutput/g'
Question: am I missing an obvious option to remove a file from the files.d directory if I delete it from the files list? Or do I have to delete it manually? It might be helpful to add a section to the README on how to update and delete dotfiles from being tracked, and also a more detailed description of what the -b option does (and what is actually created when it's not used).
You are only missing the function I didn't finish. There should be either dummy code or a TODO in the backpac main script referencing garbage collection, which isn't difficult but I just haven't finished it. The idea being another loop of "hey I found these old files in your files.d, mind if I delete them?" It's on my list and I'll try to get it in asap.
And finally, just out of curiosity, why did you choose to actually copy the files instead of symlink like so many other dotfile managers do?
git not following symlinks, hardlinks also out for permissions issues (git wouldn't be able to read the files, change them, etc.)
I definitely would prefer to not make an entire copy of the file, but I haven't come up with a better option. Shout with ideas, though. Also, if there is a way around the link issues I noted above, let me know. I don't see one but that doesn't mean it's not there.
edit: I think a Seattle area Arch meetup would be cool! Perhaps coffee someplace? Bellevue? U-district? Anyone else? BYOPOL (bring your own pimped out laptop)
A general meetup sounds good. I was also thinking it would be fun to do a mini archcon with some demos.

  • The iphone "iphone" cold not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2005)

Accidentally disconnected my 3g phone usb cable from the tower during the restore of the backup of my gen 1 iphone to the 3g phone when performing the initial setup. Upon plugging it back in, itunes proceeded to download the latest software update for the phone and prompt me to do that instead of restoring all my data/settings from the gen 1 phone. Figured i'd let it go through with that update and then do the restore from backup, however, after extracting the 2.02 software update, the install stops and pops up the following error.
The iphone "iphone" cold not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2005)
The 3g phone is now stuck in restore/connect to itunes mode and will not completely start up. Should I reinstall itunes, back-up my gen 1 phone again and start over?

Well, you just answered your own problem, try the last solution and then let us know if the problem persists.

  • I have iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

Hi, I have the  iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

    Hello Glittergirl68,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the function to reseize the Font in an iBook is not functioning properly.
I recommend a few things here. First close all the apps that are running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
From: iOS: Force an app to close
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
When you have done that, restart the phone, and try again.
If the issue persists, I would follow these steps from the article:
iOS: Troubleshooting apps purchased from the App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
    2. Check for app updates
You can setup apps to update automatically in Settings > iTunes & App Store, but make sure that your apps are up to date:
Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.
If  prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. App Store will then download and install the app updates.
Note: Some apps may require a Wi-Fi connection to update.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If none of your user-installed apps will launch, there could be an issue with Apple ID authorization. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information. You can also remove an app from your iOS device and download it again from the App Store or sync the app from your computer.Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.
    4. Restart the app
If the issue affects only a single app, try closing just that app.
    5. Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
    6. Reinstall the affected app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it:
Tap and hold any app icon on the Home Screen until the icons start to wiggle and show a small "x" in the top-right corner of the app.
Tap the "x" in the corner of the app you want to delete.
Tap Delete to remove the app and all of its data from your device.
    Press the Home button.
    Go to the App Store.
Search for the app and then download it again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade but I have a new Apple ID, how can I make certain I don't lose any data in my iBooks?

I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade iBook but it is "stuck" on my old ID, yet I already created a new ID but it won't let me update the App.  I have everything backed up on my MacBook so if I delete iBooks on my iPad and retrieve the App under my new ID and then sync with my MacBook, will I still have all of the books, etc.?

Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. If you bought all of the books with the old ID then AFAIK you will have to continue to use that ID in order to continue to sync those books to the iPad.
You have to update the app with the old ID so I don't see how you could keep the books with the new ID. Maybe I am wrong about this, but someone else will chime in I'm sure and correct me if I am wrong.

  • I have a company Ipad that belonged to a deceased employee. no access to his icloud or appleID. how can I restore it for use with a new apple ID

I have a company Ipad that belonged to a deceased employee. no access to his icloud or appleID. how can I restore it for use with a new apple ID?
The apple ID was his personal account and can no longer gain access. Im sure I can get purchase recipts from the accounting department if needed. I tried to put the Ipad in restore mode and used itunes to "recover" the ipad but it still wont let me in because he registered the device with the "lost iphone" feature or whatever that is.

    Activation Lock in iOS 7  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818
The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required
If you do not have that information you will not be able to use the Device.

  • How can I tell if I have the right restore disks for Intel Mac Mini

I have an "early 2006" (confirmed by S/N YM609***) Intel Mac Mini 1.66mhz Core Duo. I bought it used and the hard drive had been wiped. Both the HD and the DVD drive seem to work fine; hard drive passes SMART tests. I was able to boot using "Drive Genius" and can access the pre-install items like Disk Utility (and know that I need to use GUID formatting to create a bootable disk). Not knowing I could order restore disks from Apple I bought a set on eBay, p/n AHT VERSION 3A102 DISC VERSION 1.1 2Z691-5828-A, copyright 2006 on disks and included documentation (OS 10.4.6), but the install always fails 10-15 minutes along. I got the same results when trying to install via internal optical drive to a FW or USB external HD (told it to use GUID for the external HD), or external FW optical drive both to internal HD and to external USB hard drive. A friend tried to install full retail versions of 10.5 and even 10.6 for diagnostic purposes, using the built in HD and DVD drives, but those installs did not complete either; they did not try external drives. Is that the wrong restore version for this model, or even if the right "generation", does a set of restore disks only work with the specific Mac mini they were issued for like for example XP restore disks would? I've been told I can provide my s/n to Apple and for about $30 they will send me the "right" restore disks... anyone know anything about this? Could there be a hardware/firmware explanation for why the install fails like that? PS ran the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test with that restore disk set and it reported "no problems."
    <Edited by Host>

Thanks. Actually I got the Mini from a computer recycling company I work with so I knew it might have problems and that I was taking an "as-is" risk. If the original disks were turned in with it, they'd been lost (that outfit took in huge piles of stuff every day; it was often luck of the draw for me to find something before it would be buried, damaged, etc., and not everyone who worked there had any idea of the possible value of things they received) for me to find things. The disks I got on eBay apparently were separated from the mini they'd been packaged for. An Apple Store rep said I could order restore direct from Apple just by providing my serial number; just wish I'd known that before I went to eBay. Since posting this I've seen another seller specifically claiming that the same-part-numbered-as-mine disc set they are selling will work with my specific type of Mac mini. I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the Genius Bar at an Apple store near me in case they have more suggestions. Will share what I know as things develop.
