Restoration of old photographs

Hello! I have been looking at purchasing Aperture for personal photographic reasons. I am now in need of a program that will allow me to do some restoration work on my old family photographs. I need a pretty good program to do this. I have read on some discussion forums that Aperture does not do a great job in this area as compared to Photoshop. Does anyone have any input? I would love to go with Aperture, but cannot buy both programs. I need to purchase the best program for restoration work.
Also, any input on Photoshop Elements for Mac?
I look forward to your replies!

This is not really Aperture's core competency. It can do color adjustments, and some healing, but it's nowhere near as powerful as Photoshop for hardcore restoration work.
The thing about Photoshop is that it's very, very complicated with a steep learning curve. Depending on how much time/effort you want to put into learning, Elements may be a better fit -- but since I've used Photoshop but not Elements (at least, not Elements since version 2), I can't say what it's lacking.

  • Restoring old photograph fron 1890

I am restoring an old photo for our local museum. I believe
"Sepia" color was used instead of black and white. Can I create
sepia? Convert to black and white first?
    I have PE7.

    Yes to both.
Go to Enhance>Convert to Black & White. If this command is not available in your version of PSE, apply a hue/saturation adjustment layer, then drag the saturation  slider all the way to the left.
You can apply sepia tone quite easily. Open a Photo-filter adjustment layer, select sepia from the drop-down and adjust the density slider to suit. Uncheck "preserve luminosity."
    Please post your progress.

  • I have an old ipod that got put through the washer. I want to restore it but i already have a new ipod. How can i restore my old ipod without losing all of my new itunes songs?

I accidently put my old 2nd generation Ipod nano through the washer a few years ago. Well after that it would no longer work do to water damage. After a while i got a new Ipod (the same type) and was able to get new songs to put on it and what not. Well i was playing around with the one i washed opne day and found that i could still restore it on iTunes. However, it wont let me restore it without losing all of my music and what not that i got for the new one. I would like to continue to use the old one, but I am afraid of losing all of my current stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can restore the old and keep the new? I am in desperate need.

    Well, two thoughts.
The battery has completely discharged and will take overnight to recharge, so don't expect much in an hour.
The battery has deep discharged and is now dead. It will never recharge and should be replaced.
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:

There are third-party firms that do repairs on iDevices, and there are places where you can order parts to DIY if you feel up to the task. Start with Google to search for these.
The flat fee for a battery exchange is, I believe, $99.00 USD.

  • Cannot sync my iPhone 4S after I restored my old phone's content

I purchaced a new (slightly used) iPhone yesterday and I had a back up on my computer from about a month ago. My old iPhone broke so I had to buy a new one. I set it up and restored my old data onto my phone, I have all of the old notes, all of the old pictures but my iPhone will not let me sync my music because "it is not authorized on this computer" which it is. I cannot restore it again, because iTunes "Does not recognize the iPhone" What can I do to fix this?

I had the same problem, after a long discussion with Apple one of their engineers came up with the bright idea of restoring from the original backup via WiFi rather than connecting to iTunes by USB. This should give you a pretty good idea as to whether the photos are there in your backup file, as for instance it said uploading 22 of 863 photos for me, left it overnight to restore from backup via WiFi, restarted the iPhone in the morning and all of my photos had been restored. I have since backed up all photos to a very helpful Dropbox "Camera Uploads" update.
To restore from iCloud via WiFi, on your device:
Open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
Wait for the device to restart, input Time and Date Settings and Connect to WiFi.
Log in using your Apple ID and select Restore from iCloud Backup. (Ensure it is the iCloud backup with all relevant photos).
Leave device to Restore overnight and restart in the morning!

  • How can you remove mirroring from the digital images of old photographs?

I have inherited several hundred old photographs and many of them display "silver mirroring" in the black regions which creates a bluish cast on the scanned image.  Is there a simple way to reduce this problem during the scanning process or is there a way within Photoshop to repair it?  With many such photographs, I shutter to consider the time required to repair them one-by-one in Photoshop.

When scanning, try setting the black threshold up a bit.  This might loose some detail in the dark regions, but it will also make the slightly lighter images in the dark regions disappear.  It depends on how light the images are and how much dark-region detail you are willing to sacrifice.
Yes the Photoshop forums should also help you.
    Good luck,
    Jay

how can i restore my old icloud adress?

Can you explain in more detail what the issue is? If you have an @icloud.com address you can't cancel it or lose it unless it's an alias - if it's the main address it's permanently associated with the account. Can you sign into the account? If so and you sign in at http://icloud.com can you access your mail there? Is it a question of setting up Mail? And it might help to know your operating system. (Please don't feel tempted to post the actual address.)

  • Unable to connect to home wi-fi network after iPhone restores an old backup

For some reason when I recently connected my iPhone to iTunes, it restored an old backup from a few days earlier. Since then, I can no longer connect to wi-fi networks I previously connected to regularly, like my home and office networks. I have tried resetting network settings, rebooting the phone, forgetting the networks, etc. Nothing seems to work. I have no idea what else to do.
If anyone else is having this specific problem, please help me out.

The restore process don't restore the Wireless networks that you used to use... this is a security measure.

  • How to restore my old hard drive into a new hard drive using my time machin

My HD in my Mac Book died. Thank to the apple care Apple change it to me.
Now I have a new HD with nothing on it.
How do I use the backup in the Time Machine to restore my old hard drive?
As far as what I knew I am supposed to have all my old data, applications, and more by doing something with Time Machine.
    Thanks

    hi,
i have been through this. First if apple techs replaced the drive you do have something on the drive. your internal drive can boot the machine although your user settings, network settings and third-party software applications are net set up.
here's what you do.. connect the time macine drive and turn it on. now boot your macbook. watch the 'welcome movie' and don't panic. you will recieve setup instructions from the macbook. you will of course designate the system language to be english. Now an option screen will appear. there are options for setting up the new computer include using a firewire cable and transfering stuff from another macbook. ignore that option. you will see an option to restore settings from a time machine drive. bingo! choose that.
get the transfer started and go away. usb restoration of big internal harddrives by time machine is **** slow. (it should be slow for alot of technical reasons. don't blame apple.)
make sure you have the macbook plugged into an electrical outlet, not running off battery because this can be an overnight process.
so now you're good to go
