Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 using NTDS.DIT file

hello
I have NTDS.DIT file with me and want to restore it on same hardware with same host name and IP
Please help

Hi Rochak,
You have only the NTDS.DIT file?
No its not possible to restore the AD only using NTDS.DIT. You need to have the System state backup.
System state backup and restore operations include all system state data: you cannot choose to backup or restore individual components
due to dependencies among the system state components. However, you can restore system state data to an alternate location in which only the registry files, Sysvol directory files, and system boot files are restored. The Active Directory database, Certificate
Services database, and Component Services Class Registration database are not restored to the alternate location.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 - ntds.dit grows abnormal

    Hi all!
    We have a domain with 20 domain controllers in 18 different sites, the servers are in different countries around the world. All servers are Windows Servers 2008 R2 SP1, domain functional level is Windows 2008 R2. We have about 6000 users and clients in the
    domain.
    Our ntds.dit file is 5,2GB in size! I think it's too big for our environment, isn't it? At the moment we don't have any problems with replication or anything else, but I wanted to know why it became that big, and it's still growing!
    I found a tool dsastat in Windows 2003 support tools... i tried dsastat.exe -loglevel:debug -output:both and got an output. The DSA Diagnostics shows me a total size of 98MB! Maybe the tools doesn't work for 2008? I also tried the registry key
    from this website http://rickardnobel.se/when-to-offline-defrag-ntds-dit/ to show me the garbage collection... This was the output:
    Internal event: The Active Directory Domain Services database has the following amount of free hard disk space remaining.
    Free hard disk space (megabytes):
    15
    Total allocated hard disk space (megabytes):
    5170
    So I don't think offline defragmentation would help.
    Just some more information... we have Exchange 2010 and Lync 2010, our users can upload picture to AD (size limit 10KB!). AD recycle bin is enabled in our domain.
    Does anybody know a tool to get more information about what's writting so much stuff to ntds.dit file?
    Thanks for you help! Best regards
    Steffi

    Free hard disk space (megabytes):
    15
    Total allocated hard disk space (megabytes):
    5170
    That is NOT very nice.. Yo do not need to do a defragmentation to recover those 15 MB space. :)
    Run this process in some of your domain controllers and compare the results with this one. See if they have ~5170 space allocated to database. I believe that much information is related to the Lync and Exchange as you mentioned. Repetitive data is a case
    in point. You mentioned that users are able to upload their own photo, so make sure the old photos are no longer resides somewhere in the database.
    Try to dcpromo an additional domain controller. After that what is the size of the newly promoted DC database? In that case we can drill down the problem.
    BTW: Since you got 98MB from dsastat I recommend you to run the command against deleted objects. By default dsastat is not querying for deleted objects. Drop a
    isDeleted=TRUE and check the results.

  • How to create restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1

    hi i am bhaskar ... how to create restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1 and how to restore system from a restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1.. is this option available or not ? what is the difference between shadow copies and
    restore point ? instead of restore point we have this shadow copies option in windows server 2008 ?Bhaskar

    AFIK, Restore Points doesn’t exist in Windows 2008.
    Volume Shadow Copy option can be used to achieve:
    Creating consistent backups of open files and applications
    Creating shadow copies for shared folders
    Creating transportable shadow copies using a hardware provider — for backup, testing and data mining scenarios
    Quickly recovering and restoring files and data
    It is more like a file, data, application backup.

      Hello!
     Can CUCM 9.1.2 support an integration with Active Directory(Windows Server 2003 Standart Edition SP2)? How do I have to write down LDAP Manager Distinguished Name? I can find supporting only Active Directory 2003 in documentations without reference to Operation System.

    Yes, it is possible.

  • List DNS zones on a NTDS.DIT file is it possible?

    Hi guys,
    is it possible that after mounting an active directory database NTDS.DIT file to list the DNS zones that existed in that domain controller active directory integrated zones?
    I have mounted successfully the AD database using
    dsamain.exe -dbpath “C:\path\to\ntds.dit” -ldapport 5532 -allownonadminaccess -allowupgrade
    and now i can see it on dsa.msc console. But since the DNS folder on that drive didn't had the DNS zone files i assume this are embedded on the database as they were AD integrated.
    Thanks in advance for any information.

    Simply use ldp.exe and you then you can go under:
    CN=MicrosoftDNS,DC=DomainDnsZones,DC=Domain,DC=COM
    CN=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=Domain,DC=COM
    This is an example of article about how you can use ldp.exe: https://ramazancan.wordpress.com/2009/12/11/dsamain-%E2%80%93-active-directory-database-mounting-tool/

  • Mounting and Unmounting NTDS.dit file

    Hi,
    I am creating a PowerShell script that will give a possibility to mount the NTDS.dit file from the backup and compare the Backup AD with the current AD. If you are interested I can share the unfinished script. The problem is that I want to moun the NTDS.dit
    file in a scripted maner. When you mount the file manualy using:
    dsamain -dbpath "<path_to_the_NTDS.dit_file>" -ldapPort 10389
    the process starts normaly but to end it the user needs to press "Ctrl+C" and once the process is running the script will not conitnue. I want to stop ager certain amount of time. I tried different ways starting the command as different process
    (e.g.
    cls
    $w1 = ""
    $w2 = ""
    get-process -name powershell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Foreach-object {$w1 = @();$w1 += $_.ID}
    start-process powershell.exe -argument '-nologo -noprofile -executionpolicy bypass -command "dsamain -dbpath "<path_to_the_NTDS.dit_file> -ldapport 33389"'
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 10

    $e1 = foreach ($r in $e) {if($r -like "*=>*"){ $r }}
    $e1 | Foreach-object {$y = @();$y += $_.InputObject}
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 600
    stop-process -id $y
    and
    Start-Process "Powershell.exe" -WindowStyle Hidden -ArgumentList "
      Start-Job -Name 'Mounting the NTDS.dit' -ScriptBlock {
        Do
            # --- This will mount the ntds.dit file from the backup ---
            dsamain -dbpath $NTDS_File -ldapPort $LDAP_PortNumber
        Until ($False)
        }; Start-Sleep -s $time_ntds
    But both commands don't allways work. I was browsing other solutions and came accross the main article of
    dsamain:
    Active Directory Domain Services Database Mounting Tool (Snapshot Viewer or Snapshot Browser) Step-by-Step Guide
    and little bit from top of the "Steps for using the Active Directory databse mounting tool" there is a line that says:
    "..You can stop Dsamain by pressing CTRL+C in the Command Prompt window or, if you are running the command remotely, by setting the
    stopservice attribute on the rootDSE object. "
    Can anyone tell me how to use stopservice, e.g. give example scripts or equivelent.
    Or if anyone has any other ideas how to acomplish the task I would be more than happy to hear them out and try.

    Solved it by using this command:
                          $time_ntds = 10
                          $time_ntds = $time_ntds*60
                          Start-Process "Powershell.exe" -WindowStyle Hidden -ArgumentList "
                            Start-Job -Name 'Mounting the NTDS.dit' -ScriptBlock {
                              Do
                                    # --- This will mount the ntds.dit file from the backup ---
                                    dsamain -dbpath $NTDS_File -ldapPort $LDAP_PortNumber
                              Until ($False)
                            }; Start-Sleep -s $time_ntds
                        start-sleep -Seconds 35

  • Install software on multiple client computers in active directory domain win 2008 R2

    We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Domain. We will be getting a few new Windows 7 computers that we will need to install all our proprietary software on, and don't want to have to install all programs, including windows

  • Permissions Issue saving to Home Directory on Server 2008 R2

    I have a lab of 10.5 iMacs connected to our domain through active directory. When the students log in, their network home directories (hosted on Win Server 2008 R2) mount on the desktop. The students are having permissions issues when saving to these directories. For some odd reason, the students can save files created in Word, but not files created in Excel. We have separate shares on the same server for our teachers - Hand In and Hand Out. The students are unable to copy files from the Hand Out folders to their home directories because they get the same permissions error message.
    Last year as a work around to this issue we gave the students full control of their home directories. We do not want to continue doing this because then the students can change the permissions on their home directories. The standard in our district is to give the students "modify" control.
    We have 10.4 macs set up in this exact same manner and we do not have any permissions problems. This only seems to affect the 10.5 macs. Thanks!

    Hi Rolf,
    I understand the confusion.
    So the answers to your questions first.
    It was suggested to me to get CR2008 but I heard 2008 will not be supported much longer, is that correct?
    Patch support ends for CR 2008 on December 31, 2015.
    If I install 2008 will I use a different reference in my application instead of 11.5.3700.0 ?
    Yes. Crystal Reports 2008 is version 12.0 product and all CR 2008 assemblies are of 12.0 version. So your references would be 12.0
    What needs to be installed on the 2008 server and what will the IIS setting be (running as 32 bit)?
    .CR 2008 runtimes (of appropriate SP) should be installed on the server. CR 2008 only has 32 bit runtimes so make sure IIS is running under 32 bit.
    Morever,
    Few things to do while migrating on dev machine.
    - Open the project in either VS 2005 or VS 2008.
    - Remove all earlier references (11.x).
    - Assign new CR references (12.0) and recompile the app.
    - Not to forget, upgrading your reports to CR 2008 by opening them in CR 2008 designer and checking if everything is working as expected.

  • Yosemite/Active Directory/Windows Server

    After upgrading two iMacs from Mavericks to Yosemite, both now fail to connect to user accounts created with Windows Server2012. When using Mavericks I did not have this issue. Any thoughts? I did unbind but now the binding process fails as well.

    This fixed my problem- Network Preferences/Advanced/DNS then add the NAME of your local server to the search domain. Click apply. Next, open Directory Utility and unbind the computer. Lastly, Bind the computer making sure to input the name of the local server in the space for Active Directory Domain (the same name you added to the Search Domain) and click on Bind. Hope this works!

  • Active Directory RAM requirement 2008 R2

    Dear,
    I have multiple 2008 R2 Active directory domains (6 DC with respective ADC)  in a forest, User range on each domain is between 500 to 5000. please guide me the RAM requirement with consideration of replication and dns load, I have quad core servers
    and all domain controller have integrated DNS
    Only Antivirus will be installed  on them.
    thanks
    Wajahat

    Greetings!
    I always measure the amount of RAM needed with this formula:
    (RAM for base OS) + (RAM for each individual software) + (1GB internal processes) + (1GB or backup when processes meet dead-end)
    In your case a 6GB seems enough if your server is not a Global Catalog. If it is also a Global Catalog you should double the amount of RAM
    at minimum. Something like ( n >= 12 ).

    we have a solutions of 802.1x with Cisco ACS appliance wich is working fine, the soluction include two ACS appliance version 4.2.0.124, 02 remote Agent wich is setting up on windows 2003. The remote agent is integrated with Active Directory windows 2003. The computers have windows XP with service pack 2 and service pack 3, all computers do machine authentication and then user authentication. My customer in thinking in migrate the Active Directory windows 2003 to windows 2008. My question is ¿there wil be some problem with Active Directory 2008 with the current soluctión of ACS and 802.1x solution ? or I will have to do aditional task.
    Marco

    Hi,
    You can find the suported Windows Server versions on the online documentation:
    ACS 4.2: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_windows/4.2/installation/guide/windows/install.html#wp1041376.
    ACS 4.2.1: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_windows/4.2.1/Installation_Guide/windows/install.html#wp1041376.
    So, i would suggest you to double-check carefuly the Release and Service Pack of the new 2008 Servers and also the OS bit version to make sure you migrate to Win2008 but continue on a supported scenario.

  • CR Server 2008 / Using openDocument interface with a no-logon wrapper

    Hi, all!
    I had a problem with the openDocument.jsp interface and a no-logon wrapper which took me quite a while to figure out. I'm now posting these results here in the hopes that someone else will find them useful. Of course, if anyone has input how to improve the solution, it's also welcome!
    The system on which this was developed and tested was a vanilla Crystal Reports Server 2008 installation on Tomcat / MySQL / Windows Server 2003.
    The problem was that calls to openDocument interface left sessions open and this quickly led to the situation where all the concurrent access licenses (CALs) were used. It seemed nondeterministic when a session was released; it could have been minutes or hours.
    The solution: write a HTTP session timeout listener which logoffs the CRS-backend session. (The code below has still some dubug output enabled.)
    package fi.niscayah.util;
    import com.crystaldecisions.sdk.framework.IEnterpriseSession;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.util.Date;
    import java.util.Enumeration;
    import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
    public class KillSession implements HttpSessionListener
        public void sessionCreated(HttpSessionEvent event)
            debug("sessionCreated()", event);
        public void sessionDestroyed(HttpSessionEvent event)
            HttpSession session = event.getSession();
            try {
                java.util.Enumeration name = session.getAttributeNames();
                while (name.hasMoreElements()) {
                    String attributeName = (String)name.nextElement();
                    Object attribute = session.getAttribute(attributeName);
                    if((attribute != null) && (attribute instanceof IEnterpriseSession)) {
                        debug("  attribute : " + attributeName);
                        debug("  type      : " + attribute.getClass().getName());
                        IEnterpriseSession ies = (IEnterpriseSession)attribute;
                        ies.logoff();
                debug("sessionDestroyed()", event);
            } catch (Exception ex) {
                debug("sessionDestroyed() exception");
        private void debug(String msg)
            SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss");
            String timestamp = sdf.format(new Date());
            System.err.println("[KillSession] [" + timestamp + "] " + msg);
        private void debug(String msg, HttpSessionEvent event)
            HttpSession session = event.getSession();
            String id = session.getId();
            String context = session.getServletContext().getServletContextName();
            debug("[" + context + "] [" + id + "] " + msg);
    (If you want to test the above code, create a .jar package out of it and put it in webapps/OpenDocument/WEB-INF/lib.)
    Next we need to register our listener. I noticed that the openDocument-webapp's web.xml-file already contained a listener definition that claimed to expire enterprise sessions on HTTP timeout. I never saw such results; I tested it by registering my own listener, which only outputted debug information, and then when ever a session timeout happened, I checked the amount of licenses in use via the CMC - it never dropped predictably.
    So, comment out the SessionCleanupListener and add KillSession.
    <!-- SK: Added own listener. -->
    <listener>
        <listener-class>fi.niscayah.util.KillSession</listener-class>
    </listener>
    <!-- SK: Commented out. -->
    <!-- SessionCleanupListener is used to expire the EnterpriseSession when the web session is timeout -->
    <!-- <listener>
        <listener-class>com.businessobjects.sdk.ceutils.SessionCleanupListener</listener-class>
    </listener> -->
    After the above, change the HTTP session timeout to something more suitable. If you're creating really big reports, one minute might be too little. Also notice, that the value is an approximation. The timeout event might happen just as one minute has passed, but usually it takes more.
    <session-config>
        <session-timeout>1</session-timeout>
    </session-config>
    Now we're good to go and test the openDocument interface. The result should be that every time a HTTP session timeouts, an enterprise session (which was initialized via the openDocument call) is logged off.
    Next the no-logon wrapper.
    I found a lot of examples for logging in automatically, but every one of them exhibited a strange behavior (at least when used in conjunction with the openDocument interface) where the session count was increased by two. A lot of head scratching later, the solution below was devised.
    <%@ page language="java"
        import = "com.crystaldecisions.sdk.framework.CrystalEnterprise,
                  com.crystaldecisions.sdk.framework.IEnterpriseSession,
                  com.crystaldecisions.sdk.framework.ISessionMgr,
                  com.crystaldecisions.sdk.exception.SDKException"
    %>
    <%
    ISessionMgr sessionManager = CrystalEnterprise.getSessionMgr();
    IEnterpriseSession entSession = sessionManager.logon("Guest", "", "<server>:6400", "secEnterprise");
    String entToken = entSession.getLogonTokenMgr().createWCAToken("", 1, 1);
    // So that this can be logged off when the session timeouts
    HttpSession httpSession = request.getSession();
    httpSession.setAttribute("nologon_SESSION", entSession);
    String query = request.getQueryString();
    String redirectURL = "http://<server>:8080/OpenDocument/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?" +
        query + "&token=" + entToken;
    response.sendRedirect(redirectURL);
    %>
    You can put the above .jsp-file where you like, but I dropped it in webapps/openDocument, since it's no use by itself.
    The use of nologon.jsp is simple: use it as you would openDocument.jsp.
    And there you have it. A word of warning though, if you're not sure what you're doing, I wouldn't recommend trying these things out. And you certainly shouldn't deploy these on a production environment.
    As said before, any input is welcome!

    I'll comment on the BusinessObjects Enterprise logon tokens that you may generate via the Enterprise SDK.
    DefaultToken - this is used for failover - i.e., if the original EnterpriseSession object is destroyed without having logoff() method invoked, the failover can be used to re-connect to Enterprise without redo-ing authentication.  This token is immediately invalidated with EnterpriseSession.logoff().
    CreateLogonToken - token represents an EnterpriseSession independent of the original EnterpriseSession that generates it.  So you should generated the CreateLogonToken and log off the EnterpriseSession before using the token, or you'll have two licenses being used.
    CreateWCAToken - the Web Component Adapter token - this token is tied to the EnterpriseSession used to create it.  If this EnterpriseSession is invalidated, the WCA token can no longer be used.  Since this is essentially re-use of the original EnterpriseSession, license count is not increased with its use.
    So in your application, you're generating the WCA Token, and using the Session Listener to explicitly log off the originating EnterpriseSession.  The SessionCleanupListener is for cleaning up sessions created within InfoView on Web Application Server Session timeout.
    Sincerely,
    Ted Ueda

    search on the server, I get entirely different results from running a test search on the Windows 7 client.
    I've heard of setting the file share to enable "Offline Mode" on the client workstation to allow the workstation to index the share, but I cant have every workstation downloading and indexing a copy of our file share (hundreds of gigabytes). I
    tried adding the mapped network drive to the Windows 7 Document Library, but I get the error message saying that the location cant be added because it's not indexed. Suggestions?
    Shaun

    Hi Shaun,
    First please check if Windows Search 4.0 could be installed on your server - it is for Windows Server 2008 so it may not able to be installed on a Windows Storage Server 2008.

    For remote indexing please see the Remote Query part of the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772446(v=ws.10).aspx
    Remote Query
    Windows Search 4.0 extends the ability to search across remote desktops. Previously, only Windows Vista users could query recognizable indexes on remote Vista computers; now, WS4 enables users to query remote computers running any supported operating system.
    Remote querying includes the following features:
    Queries work across all supported OSes (Windows XP, Server 2003, Home Server, and Vista).
    All shared NTFS folders are automatically indexed (excludes all FAT file systems).
    All shared, and therefore indexed, locations can be remotely queried.
    The location on the remote computer must be shared and it must be indexed. With Group Policy, administrators can control whether shared locations are automatically indexed.
